Is 1GB RAM enough?

I will soon be using my MBP (2GHZ, Core Duo, 1GB) for recording work in a Studio Composition major at school. When I bought my computer this past summer, Apple told me 1 GB of RAM would be a good amount for me. I think I will be running protools mostly but considering Reason and others. Everyone now has made 2GB RAM the standard. I mean, the only other thing I use that isparicularly intense is the occasional game of halo or the sims 2.
Do I need more?
Also, I have two 512 sticks right now. I've heard it's best to keep them in even pairs. How much would it cost to upgrade to two 1 Gigs? Would I just ebay the 512s? how much could I get?
Thats if I even need it! AYYY!
Thanks in advance.

products7074740,
It is true that using "matched" pairs of DIMMs increases the maximum memory bandwidth. By "matched," what is meant is that the two DIMMs are of equal size and specifications (it is not necessary that they be from the same manufacturer).
In some cases, more benefit might come from having more total memory than would from a slight increase in maximum bandwidth, thus the practicality and ability to install 3 GBs.
IMO, 1 GB of RAM is sufficient for OS X, and usually sufficient to prevent significant "swapping" (which would actively slow your computer) for most uses, but it is not enough to actively speed your computer.
This only comes from having enough RAM to enable the maintainance of a large amount of "inactive" memory. This is memory that caches frequently-used instructions and data, and it greatly speeds the response of applications.
In the past, I would recommend at least 1.5 GBs. Since it is now beneficial to install DIMMs in pairs, providing an additional (slight) boost in speed, I recommend installing 2 GBs.
Here is the "kit" I recommend you purchase.

    Hi Tommy,
Using install discs created for another computer is the problem. I suggest you get a stand alone install disc for Leopard and give that a try. I know it's a bummer since you have a perfectly good install disc but you can't take an install disc from a new computer and use it to update an older computer. As a matter of fact you would have problems using your install disc on the same type of computer if it didn't have the same build number. In the old days of Power Macs that wasn't an issue. You could take an install disc for one computer and update every Mac you owned. Sorry.

  • Is 1GB of RAM Enough?

I was planning on buying a MacBook with the SuperDrive and a 2.0GHz. Is 1GB of RAM enough to run photoshop, dreamweaver, and flash, beacuse if I only get 1G of RAM then I can upgrade the hard drive to 100GB. I plan on using Boot Camp also.
This will be my first mac.
      Windows XP   Slow Celeron

But don't forget that the MacBook has integrated graphics, which siphons off of the main ram instead of providing its own.
I have 1GB, and my MacBook usually only has a couple of MB free, even when only running basic applications. You should also monitor your page ins/outs in Activity Monitor. If the number of outs rises at a rate that you find uncomfortable, you should probably upgrade.
Crucial has great, and usually cheap, ram, but right now their 2GB MacBook kit is priced at a ridiculous $417 (http://tinyurl.com/ymbyq7). I just bought a 2GB kit from Other World Computing (http://tinyurl.com/mo5bz), and I'm waiting for it to come in the mail.

  • I cannot get my Imac G5 (1gb ram 1.8ghz) to update to anything above 10.3.9 as it ejects the disk on restart.. any ideas?

    I have an Imac G5 with 1Gb ram and a 1.8gz processor.
its the original 17inch without iSight/ambient light
many times i have treid to update the operating systems, but it always fails on reboot.
I was told is was something to do with the Firmware superdrive update 2.0 - but i have treid to install this and it is not needed by my Mac.
one thing that may contribute to the problem is this:-
Whenever i start up my Mac - I have the standard apple screen. but then a folder appears on screen with a question mark in it before switching to a loading bar. then the comuter boots as normal. this may be completly irrelevant, but i thought id best say all to try and get top the bottom of it.
any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks in advance.
    Adam

3 discs? What version is it? The last version retail was 10.5.6 on a single DVD-ROM as far as I know. Mind you, I don't have Leopard retail, only Tiger & Snow Leopard.
    The box;
Reading your original post again I'm wondering if you have a problem with the Hard Drive. The flashing folder with the question mark means the Mac isn't finding a valid OS straight away.
As you can obviously boot from the Leopard disc, try doing so and ignore the installer; go to the menu bar (Tools menu I think in Leopard, but could be Utilities), and open Disk Utility.
Select your HD in the left pane (either entry - the first ones the physical drive, the indented one is the volume Macintosh HD). Run Repair Disc and see what comes up. If it repairs anything, run it again until the only message you get at the bottom of the list is the green "the volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK".
Next thought; what installation option are using? Erase and Install (wipes the drive before installing), or Archive and Install (leaves the existing OS and data intact in a "previous System" folder. That needs enough space for everything that's already on there, plus the new OS. If there's not enough room for both, it won't install.

  • New Intel Mac mini: Is 1G Ram Enough?

    Hello everyone.
I intend to get my dad and my sis (upgrade from her old iMac G3) each a new Intel Mac mini Core Solo.
I understand that the new Intel Mac mini shares the ram memory between the processor and the "in-built" graphics... also understand from an Apple KB docu that it is best to pair the same ram to maximise efficiency or something...
My dad will be mainly in iPhoto, organising his digital photos, burning CDs and touching up a bit here and there; And both of them will be using mainly to surf, email, chat, maybe a bit of word processing etc - I would say "light to moderate work"
So is 1Gb of Ram enough for the processor and the graphics? I would probably try to max out as big a hard disk for them... and a 19" monitor...
    Thanks and cheers

If he can afford it, I would recommend putting 2-1G modules in there. OS X loves RAM and will call for even more running apps under Rosetta.

Once it's poped, you can't get rid of it, it gives you an 'Ok' option, but if you press it, it just loads again, and you can't press the 'x' or it just comes back.
In order to get Skype working again I have to 'End Process' in task manager (Where I see it using 1GB Ram), and then re-start skype and it's fine.

  • MSI 865PE Neo2-V and 1GB RAM stick, compatibility?

    Hi all,
I've just bought a new mainboard, the MSI 865PE Neo2-V... I read that supports up to 3GB of DDR333, so now I want to buy 2 new RAM modules.
    These modules has the specific:
     - 184 memory pins
     - 1GB RAM
     - PC2700 DDR 333MHz
     - 2.5 Module
     - Non-ECC, Non-Parity
     - CAS latency 2.5
     - 128 x 64 High density
Can I mount these RAM on my motherboard? On the photo, the RAM has 16 chips of ram; it seems to be "High density" RAM.
    Thanks,
    Alessandro.

Romulus76, the answer is YES for the chipset; but NOT SURE for the BIOS. I must ask MSI.

  • What can I tune to make the database use less memory in a 1GB ram notebook?

    Hi,
Our notebook has 1GB ram only, running Windows XP Pro, Oracle10g Database, Oracle9i Application Server. It consumes about 1.4 - 1.5GB ram where it's already start using the virtual memory, therefore have some performance issue with it especially when try to startup the services.
I'm not a DBA but I would like to get some advice on what and how can I tune the database to use less memory since the notebook is used for demo application only, so we save memory resource and make the notebook runs faster.
    Please advise.
    Thank you.

XP      9.0.2.0.1      N/A      Desupported      None      None      N/ADessupported means Oracle will no longer produce patches or provide maintenance for the version, so in case you hit some new bug the only alternative will be to work with a higher version.
In your case you could use 10g on XP. The only XP not supported is Home Edition.
Coming back to the issue, since 9iR2 Oracle recommendation is to provide 1G for each AS node (infrastructure and middle tier). If you have this on the same box, by itself on the Enterprise install will consume more than 1G.
Tuning 10g database won't make much difference. If you install AS 10gR2 it includes a 10gR1 Database as infrastructure database you could use for demo purposes.

  • Please Help :( iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?

Please Help iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?  It was fine 4 days ago and had been working with a 1gb stick in one slot and a 2gb stick, which had replaced the orignal 1gb stick that I got it with, in the other and it had shown 3gb of ram and was working just fine with that since November?  It went to sleep briefly 4 days ago while I was waiting on a customer and I came back to try to wake it up and it never would forcing me to hard boot it.  When I did that it would only go to a black screen with a solid white light on the power indicator.  Over and over again and same thing.  I read and tried every suggestion I could possibly find in this and a few other mac forums to no avail.
I finally after reading about RAM issues etc.  I decided to power off and take out the ram sticks and try them one at a time in each slot.  So I took out the 2gb stick and did the SMC reset and it would boot up and work just fine with the 1 gb of ram.  So then I went through the same process with the 2gb stick and it would not boot up only go to a black screen with white solid light again (NOT flashing).  So then I tried the other original 1gb I had replaced with the 2gb and it worked just find like the other 1gb.  So then I tried just 1gb stick in the other ram slot (back facing one) and with just the 1gb strip it booted up and worked fine.  Tried it with the other 1gb stick and once again that one too worked just fine.  So I determined it wasn't the slot itself I thought?  I then tried the 2gb in the back slot and it would not boot only go to the black screen white solid light deal like before.  So I thought well ok it's obviously the 2gb ram must have somehow went bad (even though I have only had it since November) and I thought well I will just use the (2) 1gb sticks in each slot and then that will at least give me 2gb because only 1gb really ***** LOL.  So I proceeded to go through the same shut down process installed both sticks (I always push them to I feel them click and my fingers have a nice indention on them) reset the SMC and turned the power one and.... It would only go to the black screen with white solid light on power indicator????  I went through the same above process at least 3 times and again today a few times and I can't figure it out and I tried to search and search and I couldn't find anything like what I am experiencing.....What happened?  Please help this slow Imac is killing me.  It will work with 1gb ram only nothing more?  Here are the specifics of my Imac.
It is a 20" Late 2006 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB graphics card and Ram with now only 1gb (did have 3gb) and I am running OSX Lion 10.7.5
When I go to system report and go under memory it shows this:

  • IMac PowerPC G5 10.4.7 1.8ghz 1GB RAM keeps freezing

I hope someone my be able to give me some advice.
I went from an old black powerbook G3 bronze that I had had for years and had the usual motherboard issues toward the end of its life to an Imac G5 PowerPC, which I was very lucky to get some help with as I am a disabled student. Unfortunately, this meant that I was not allowed to buy it direct from apple and get applecare, and had to have it from a preferred supplier (in March 2005) with their own "support" - they are not mac specialists by any stretch of the imagination! The imac has always had a habit of freezing regularly, the drive would suddenly start spinning really loudly, the cpu would shoot up to 100% and the whole system would freeze. This happens whether I am running Word, Excel, Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, Mail, iCal or Addressbook. The support guy said it was nothing out of the ordinary and I just accepted that at the time, but a friend of mine recently came round to give me some mac tips and had the system freeze on him 3 times in an hour - he felt it was some kind of error made when the software was originally loaded by the preferred supplier, but the iMac is now out of their 12 month guarantee.
We ran disc utility from the installation disc to verify and repair the hard drive and erased the partition that had been installed on the hard drive by the supplier (pre-loaded with the software, so they didn't have to do too much when their disabled clients screwed up their computers, one of the support guys told me), did a full erase of the hard drive and then a clean install using the original discs that came with the computer, but still have the same problem.
Can anyone please offer some advice on what the issue might be?
    Thanks!

    Christopher Mayled-
I am glad that you found the advice helpful. I had the same problem with my iMac and it *****. However, you did get your computer repaired and that is the bottom line.
We have three Dell laptops in the house, all covered by the infamous battery recall. Nobody from Dell has bothered to contact us yet. We have received no information in the mail. All three laptops were properly registered. I found out about the recall through the press.
I once had a stroller recalled by Toys R Us. I found out abput it by walking into a TRU and seeing the flyer hanging up on the bulletin board.
My guess is that if some of the recalled units fall through the cracks and do not get repaired then the company doing the recall saves some money. It isn't right but apparently it is what happens. Probably because of sheer numbers more than anything this happens but how do I know?
    Luck-

  • Satellite Pro L100 crashes when loaded with 2 x 1GB Ram

    Hi,
Satellite Pro L100 - came with 512MB ram - Too slow - expanded using 2 x 1GB ram from crucial technology, speed 555MHz
When both 1GB installed, laptop crashes on the XP boot screen - then loops, crashes, loops, crashes etc...
Tried alternating the slots and using ram independantly - No change - so ruled out faulty ram
Tried shippped memory with 1 x expanded 1GB ram - All OK.
Tried every orientation conceivable - just crashes when expanded ram is loaded to its specificed max - 2GB.
Upgraded BIOS to 3.2 - no change
Does anyone here have any other suggestions? I fear my last resort is to dig deep and get more ram from a diff OEM, prefer not to hence asking politely for help
    Thanks in advance,

    Have you ran Memtest?
Download the bootable Memtest CD ISO from www.memtest.org and run it for a few passes.
