Is 2011 mac mini faster then 2011 MBP?

Hello
I am thinking on buying a Mac Mini to replace my MBP for 'desktop' computing and keep the MBP for only portable work.
Is the 999$ 2.0 Ghz i7 Mac Mini faster or at least same speed as 1799$ 2.0 Ghz i7  early 2011 MBP ?
Thanks!

Be aware (if you have not looked already) that the new MacMini does not have an internal optical drive.  One contributor discussions delayed if not abandoned buying new MacMini for this reason.
The tech specs page boast "DVD optical drive sharing wirelessly", but that is likely only Mac-to-mac.
Means those left at home without the MBP need an external optical drive.  But ... that means you can buy a BluRay drive.
Not advising any path, just stating.

  • Is it possible to install a HDD from a 2012 Mac Mini into my 2010 MBP?

I'm thinking of upgrading the hard drive in my 2010 Macbook Pro and I had the idea that instead of this I could upgrade the hard drive in my late 2012 Mac Mini and use the original Mac Mini drive in my MBP.
Is this doable? Would there be any issues with compatibility/specs etc.?

Others are putting dual 3.4s 6 core and hanging on and doing better in some cases with their own GTX 7xx and above, some PCIE SSD 1TB same a Apple Samsung unit. Cost, your apps, and there are still unknowns going with a 6,1 nMP.
Gradual so no $6,000 outlay and then having to sell the 2012 5,1 and upgrade
No idea what those 5690 cpu pairs go for currently but check around thread on MacRumors and BestBuy and what revision or stepping (may not even matter).

I plan to purchase a Mac mini and then a new iPad.  Can I use the iPad as a keyboard and screen for the Mac mini, using either the USB connector or Wi-Fi?

I'm sorry, I should have said thru Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi.  I want to use the mini as a base station and the iPad like a laptop that I can sync when I'm home and carry with me when I travel.  Is is possible to hook these 2 up - iPad/mini, through Bluetooth?  I understand I need to use a regular monitor/keyboard/mouse on the initial install.

  • I started Boot Camp on a MAC mini but then  had a power failure after 30 secs :( Now when I start Boot Camp the option to install Windows 7 is gone.  In it's place is Remove Windows 7.  It seems to hang at Partitioning disk  Can I recover?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's because the Boot Camp volume was created, but your Mac hasn't been set up to start automatically from the Windows disc. Insert the Windows DVD and press C key while your Mac is starting to start Windows installation.
If you want to make sure that everything is correct, open Boot Camp Assistant and choose the option to remove Windows 7. Then, open that application again, select the option to install Windows 7 and you will be able to install Windows as usual

  • Migrate from mac mini mountain lion to mbp lion

Any suggestions on how to migrate a mac mini on mountain lion to a macbook pro on lion.  Booting from time machine doesn't work because it only wants to restore to the original computer.  Migration assistant doesn't show the backup drive as a source for the restore.  Not sure how to proceed.

Let's backup, because when I said that earlier I thought you were leaving Lion on the MBP. So, you should be able to erase the drive in the MBP, then boot from the Time Machine backup. If you have 10.8.2 backed up, then there is an invisible copy of the Recovery HD. Connect the Time Machine backup drive to the MBP.
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the Recovery HD on the Time Machine backup drive.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Once it boots up you can use the main menu to first repartition and reformat the MBP's drive, then restore the Time Machine backup to the MBP.
Sort of sorry to go in such circle to get to this point, but I just did not understand the goal. Forgive my being so thick-headed today.

  • Mac mini will not keep MBP in airdrop

The Mini will only "see" the MBP when I have Bluetooth preferences open on the MBP.  About 15 seconds after I close the Bluetooth Preferences on the MBP, the Mini drops it from the Airdrop choices.  The MBP "sees" both the iPhone and the Mini in Airdrop. Thanks for any suggestions.

An update:  As I'm sitting here working on my Mini with the MBP open on a chair next to me, the MBP appears in the Airdrop window on the Mini.  ????

  • Mac Mini and MBP Memory Compatible?

    Hello Everyone!
I have a Mac Mini it is a 2009 (Metal Surrounding with Acryllic top), and I have a 2010 MacBook Pro.
    MacMini Specs are as Follow
    - 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    - 8 GB Ram 1333MHz DDR3-SODIMM (2x4GB DDR3 SODIM,H)
    - 120 GB 5400 RPM HDD
MacBook Pro Specs are as follow:
    - 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    - 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM (I Believe PC3? - 1x2gb, 1 ram slot is bad)
    - 250 GB 5400 RPM HDD
I was wondering if I could maybe take one of the 4GB sticks from the MacMini and swap it with the 2GB Stick? I have taken one 4GB Stick out, haven't put the 2GB in the Mini Yet.
But I noticed when I install the 4GB stick into the MBP it won't boot. It will get stuck on the Grey Apple Loading Screen, with the Spinning Circle, after about 30 seconds to a minute, it will stop spinning and be stuck there. I can load the Snow Leopard install disk, can attempt to boot into safe mode, etc. But nothing will work. And I don't want to have to reinstall my whole OSX.
Also I don't get the 3 beeps in succession when starting, it just attempts to boot normally.
I have attached a picture of the two rams. The one on the top is what was already in the MBP, one on the bottom was pulled from the Mini.

According to Mactracker, an early 2009 Mac Mini and a 2010 MBP RAM have identical specifications:   204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.  Therefore they should be interchangeable.
If the chip is not being recognized, it suggests that the bay or the chip is faulty, or it is not correctly seated.
    Ciao.

  • Wireless Keyboard don't connect with new mac mini

    Hi,
I just received my new Mac mini server 2011 and bought an Apple wireless keyboard (already have a magic mouse). At first start up of my Mac mini picks up my magic mouse and I can use it but does not pick up my wireless keyboard? Is this normal? Am I missing a trick with the keyboard? Do I first need to use a normal USB keyboard to configure my Mac mini and then when Lion is setup it will install the driver for the wireless keyboard?
    Regards,

I just bought new Mac mini w/ wireless keyboard and track pad. During initial setup it would not pair to keyboard but it di see trackpad. I could not complete setup, I have no control.  Brought home USB keyboard from work and resumed setup. I'm stuck again. In setup it's asking for a trackpad click to continue. The trackpad will scroll, but will not click. The whole system is two days old and nothing works  I tried to contact support through the lengthy online screening process and apple ultimately say the new system doesn't qualify for free support.
Totally ******. I'm back to using my old pc..  What to do with this expensive boat anchor from apple?
Really could use some help here
    Thanks

  • Easiest way to move files to Mac Mini server

I'm moving GIGs of files over to my mac mini server from my MBP. Right now it says its going to take 140 hours to move my iPhoto library over. Is their a faster way to connect to the Mac Mini Server other then ethernet? Right now my MBP is wired to my verizon router/switch and my server is wired to the router/switch. Can I put a firewire directly from the server to my MBP? Will that work?

Yes, it should. So should the suggested ethernet cable between the two directly.

  • I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.

I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.
According to Cruicial my mac mini could use:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-8500
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64
Also According to Cruical my iMac uses:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-12800
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V
I want to increase the ram in both computers.
So,  can I put the iMac ram in my mac mini and then I'd only have to buy ram for my iMac?  Naturally the ulitmate test will be when I actually install it,  but having an expectation of success or failure will allow me to plan on what to spend money on.
    Thanks,
    Bear

Thanks for the responses.  I probably wont even try as my priority is Ram for the mac mini.  2 is not enough.  8 for my imac is okay for now.
Somewhere I thought I'd heard that faster Ram would simply clock at the lower speed.  It seems that I am incorrect.
    Thanks,

  • Mac Mini ethernet read / write speeds different

    Hello.
I have a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 Mac Mini running OS X Version 10.8.4.
I recently bought a Synology ds212j NAS, and started to transfer some files across my home LAN.
Everything was running fine until I noticed that the transfer had started to go really slowly.
At first I thought it was the NAS, but after exhaustive testing I think the problem is with the Mac Mini ethernet port.
I ran the LAN Speed Test program against the NAS and got the following results (with the NAS plugged directly into the Mac Mini):
    Writing (Upload): 54 Mbps
    Reading (Download): 689 Mbps
I get similar results when running against my time capsule:
    Writing (Upload): 44 Mbps
    Reading (Download): 767 Mbps
Can anyone explain what might be going on? Is it a defective ethernet port? Are there any steps I can take to further diagnose / resolve the issue?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Thanks for replying Johnathan.
I understand that write / read speeds can be different on a hard disk, but the key thing here is that the speeds changed suddenly - I was getting similar write / read speeds and then something changed (I don't have speed statistics for that).
One other thing to note is that if I plug in an external drive via USB I get write / read speeds the same.
This all makes me think that something has changed with the Ethernet port. Either it is malfunctioning or there is a cache issue etc. The problem is that I don't know how to do further diagnosis, or how to resolve.

  • Mac Mini GeekBench score for 2.26, 4GB and 320 HD

I just got my new Mac mini.

My decision was based on wanting a replacement for my Dual G5 1.8, 3GB Power Mac. This new mac mini is very fast (in my opinion) even with the "slow" 5400 RPM disk. The idea is that I'm waiting for Leopard to come out to replace the Power Mac fully, this Mac Mini will then replace my AppleTV for Media Center using Plex. I wanted as much flexibility so I went 2.26 and 4GB memory. I also think this thing is an incredible piece of art, I couldn't bring myself to crack the case
