Is 2012 mac mini good for audio production?

is 2012 mac mini good for audio production. Take in mind that I am a novice, but that really does not matter, I want to get the right product if that is an imac instead than so be it.

It depends on the sort of audio production you'll be doing. If you're going to be working with only stereo content or just a few tracks, in GarageBand for instance, a 2012 Mac mini would probably suffice, though you'll probably want to max out the RAM in the system. If you're going to be working with many tracks simultaneously with effects, EQ, etc on many, for instance with Logic Pro X with a number of plugins going, then a Mac mini probably won't do the job. In that case you'd probably want a top-end iMac or perhaps even a Mac Pro (the new model of which should be released sometime this month).
I'd suggest that you decide on the software you'll want to run, and then ask in forums related to that software what sort of system configuration users are finding to be adequate.
Regards.

  • Is new 2014 mac mini good for audio production

I want to learn how to use logic pro/audio production software. Is the 2014 mac mini powerful enough to run logic pro/audio production software efficiently? any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    +1...
My 'problem' with the current range is that the memory is no longer upgradable.... (What you buy initially is what you get) and i7 Quad Cores are no longer available for the MMs.. just Dual Cores....
This is why earlier MM models via the Apple Refurb store, have been is such short supply because they sell out within an hour or so of becoming available!
You might find this site useful for tracking down Refurbs....
    https://www.refurb.me/us/
Note: Apple refurbs are excellent value for money as they come with the same warranties as new models... plus you can purchase the extended Applecare as you can for new models... but typically sell for 15-45% less. I haven't bought a non-refurbed Mac in several years now... and couldn't be happier with the quality and reliability of the refurbished ones.
Example: In 2012 I bought a 27" 2011 iMac 3.4Ghz 16GB AMD 2GB 1TB plus 3 years of Applecare for 40% less than the then current new cost.... Great deal indeed!

  • How do i wipe a late 2012 mac mini server for resale?

I am wanting to sell my late 2012 Mac Mini Server and i would like to wipe and reset it.

Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps mentioned in this support article, take these steps:
    1. Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
    2. Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
    3. If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
    4. If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
    5. If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted.
    6. If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
    7. If the machine has an internal hard drive, erase the one remaining data partition with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by starting up in Internet Recovery mode (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer to the buyer.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either. The buyer will have to purchase them.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

  • Is this MAC Mini good for gaming?

I love to play games, and my love is the sims 3! I' am wondering if this mac mini with these specs can run smoothly TS3 + expansions:
    2.5GHz Mac mini
    2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    8GB memory
    500GB hard drive1
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
    OS X Mountain Lion
Plus I have an external hard drive with 1TB where I plan to install my games!

Here are The Sims 3 system requirements:
    FOR MAC OS X
Mac OS X 10.5.7 Leopard or higher
    Intel Core Duo Processor
    2 GB RAM
ATI X1600 or Nvidia 7300 GT with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X3100.
At least 6.1 GB of hard drive space with at least 1 GB of additional space for custom content and saved games
This game will not run on PowerPC (G3/G4/G5) based Mac systems, or the GMA 950 class of integrated video cards.
So a new low-end Mac Mini will be more than fine. I'm playing Starcraft 2 and Empire: Total War (Gold Edition) on my late-2012 Mini with a 2.6GHz processor and 16gb of RAM runs them fine.
Spring for the extra RAM because it's really cheap right now.

  • Mac mini good for photoshop, lightroom and large files?

    Hello all,
My brother finally wants to switch from windows to mac and asked me for advice. He is a young photography professional so his primary need is to run photoshop, lightroom and be able to use large RAW files and 100+ MB photoshop files.
He still has a 27" high resolution screen, so my first option to look at is the Mac Mini with the 2.7 GHz dual core i7, 8GB of ram and the standard 5400 rpm drive (as SSD is too expensive). Is this machine capable of handling the above mentioned things? I think that the processor and memory are more than enough, but i have my doubts about the videocard, since 256 mb of video memory is not that much in these days..
In the future he wants to buy an iMac or Macbook Pro, but for now that's still a little to expensive. Although, if the mac mini is not that good, he has to decide whether to wait a while and then buy an iMac or something.
I hope that anyone can give us some advice:-)
    Kind regards,
    Mark van Dam

Thank you everybody for all the replies!
First off, I think we'll wait what the 11th of june will bring us, hopefully a new mac mini. As Michael Wasley stated, the glossy imac screen isn't going to work for him. So that brings us to a Mac Mini or Macbook Pro. I'm using the macbook pro myself for the last couple of years and i'm a great fan of it's capabilities.. but my brother prefers a fixed 'computer' and not a laptop..
At this point i think he's going to buy (the new?) mac mini (and use his own screen), upgrade the RAM to somewhere between 12-16 GB, possible get a SSD drive and for sure get the biggest i7 processor available.
Hopefully that will get things running.
    Kind regards,
    Mark

I currently have this Western Digital WDC WD1001FALS-41K1B0.
Im really not happy with this drive, its slow and i get this slow disc message in logic all the time and its also very noise especially because it goes in to sleep mode all the time.
I want a better harddrive, can anyone recommend a good one?

    Caviar Black 1TB are well-liked.

  • M-Audio Venom and 2012 Mac Mini

       I have had a 2012 Mac Mini for about a month. I am starting to do home audio recording as a hobby. I just purchased an M-Audio Venom keyboard only to find this tidbit on the M-Audio site concerning the Venom;
    • Known Issue: Venom is currently incompatible with USB 3.0 ports. Please use USB 2.0 ports to connect Venom to your system.
Yep I'm a dumbo for not vetting the unit better. So, is there a work around for this? The new Minis have had several issues and I think OS updates, firmware updates, etc. will resolve these issues. I guess this problem lies with the Venom so I will ask M-Audio if they have a fix in the works. I was thinking about purchasing a USB 2 to Firewire 800 adapter but I don't think there is such an animal? At least I couldn't find one?
Any input will be most welcome, thanks.

  • Late 2012 Mac Mini display goes to black for a few seconds at random intervals

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini, Ivy Bridge, connected to a 24" Samsung LCD dsplay, using the HDMI to DVI video cable that came with the Mac Mini.  At random times when I am doing something or browsing the web, the screen will go totally black and then revert to the proper display.  This Mac Mini is connected to a 2 port KVM, however I never see this behavior when the KVM is switched over to the PC.  Has anyone else seen this behavior?

    Hi there,
The simplest way is to drag it across wirelessly using the 'Airdrop' application once both computers are near one another. 'Airdrop' can be found near the top, on the left hand side menu, within 'Finder'.

  • Can I use my late 2006 mac mini as an external drive for my late 2012 mac mini?

I have a (late 2006) Mac mini that I would like to use as an external drive for my (late 2012) Mac mini.  Is this possible and can anyone suggest what cables would be needed.  I am aware that the ports are very different i.e firewire and thunderbolt.  Thanks in advance!

    - You can boo the old Mac in Targe Disk Mode and connect the two via FireWire (FW) You will need a FW 400 to FW 800 cable or a FW 800 or FW 400 cable and appropriate adopters
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode - Apple Support
    - Use the old Mac normally and setup Disk Sharing and access the old Mac via the network. The old Mac's disk will show up  under Devices on the new Mac. One you set up the old Mac yo do not need mouse or keyboard or monitor. You can also setup Screen sharing and actually use the old Mac from the new Mac.
    - Remove the HD from the old Mac and place it in an external USB enclosure of dock and connect it to the new Mac

  • What is the biggest bottleneck on this machine - CPU, GPU, RAM (now at 8GB), or the HD, and would I be better getting a current 27" iMac, a 2012 Mac Mini, or SSDs for my current Mini?

I currently have a 2011 Mac Mini Server. When using FCP X, what is the biggest bottleneck on this machine - CPU, GPU, RAM (now at 8GB), or the HD, and would I be better getting a current 27" iMac, a 2012 Mac Mini, or SSDs for my current Mini?

    Hi Tom,
I just wanted to ask you about what you said about the color correction. To be quite honest I'm not sure what the best workflow is, and I haven't gotten my feet wet in multi-cam editing. Basically my work-flow has been.
    1) Import from the camera as optimized media - I found that adding color-correction at the import stage cause a severe hang with my tape-based Canon unit.
    2) Color-correct the imported files before loading any files into a project
    3) Drag files onto the timeline
    4) Click on the color-correction box
    5) Start editing - Usually I have one camera zoomed a little tighter on the singer, one on the whole band, and my iPad or iPhone camera at different angles so I start cutting things according to who is the focus of the moment, add a Ken Burns effect every here and there, Titles, an occassional transition effect.
    6) Add music effects after the looks are taken care of
    7) Export
Are you recommending clicking on the color-correction box after everything is done?
    Thanks - TZ

  • Screws & grommets for 2012 Mac Mini HDD

I've already got the tools and the cable (upper bay) needed to install a second HDD in my late 2012 Mac Mini, but I need another set of screws and grommets to fasten the thing in place.  I don't really want to buy the iFixit or OWC kits just for these parts (or in bulk, for that matter) so I'm wondering A) what are the specs of the screws needed for the job, B) if they're proprietary, are there any knock-off alternatives with the same length and threading, and C) does anyone know any 3rd party sources I could get them from?
Any help would be hugely appreciated.

    Solved.
Found this article, which had some very helpful details: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/31838/can-the-2011-mac-mini-not-the-ser ver-edition-support-an-additional-hardisk-ss
For $1.50 at Home Depot, I bought two 2-packs of M3 .5mmx8mm machine screws, and a 4-pack of 1/16" rubber O-rings.  Screw torx, these guys work just as well, and they're readily available.
Second drive is installed (securely) and running smooth.  Thanks for all the tips.

  • Can I use my early 2009 iMac as a display for a 2012 Mac Mini

If I buy a new 2012 Mac Mini, 2.6Ghz can I use my existing iMac (early 2009 - 24inch) as a display or do I have to go and purchase separate display ?
If the answer is yes, can someone explain what leads I would need to buy and if there are any disadvantages to doing this.

The short answer is no.  If it was a late 2009 you could.
The long answer is you could possibly use it via Screen Sharing,
Apple Remoter Desktop, or other VPN type of network display mirroring.
Redraws depending on the software being run won't be all that great
but could suffice for general purpose use.
You will however have to have a monitor to do at least the initial
    setup of the Mini.
