Is 3GB RAM ok?

In the online store, only the following options are offered for the iMac:
1GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 1x1GB
2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB [Add $150]
4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x2GB [Add $850]
Is there anything wrong with doing a total of 3GB - 1x1GB + 1x2GB RAM?
doug

Some people say its recommended because they give you dual channel memory (or something like that) which basically means slightly faster/enhanced memory - I think. But 3 GB is more than enough and will work with your iMac.
As I said before, go for Crucial.

  • MAC PRO 2.66, XT1900 & 3GB RAM for Aperture?

    Hi,
I have read a lot of post about the performance of Aperture and CS2 and budget-wise I am thinking in buying a MAC PRO 2.66, XT1900 & 3GB RAM.
Will this configuration be OK to work with Aperture and CS2?
I shoot primary weedings using 8MP Canon RAW files.
    Thanks

I have this exact same setup, powering a 24" Dell and a 23" apple monitor - but with 4 gigs of RAM as the previous post suggests. It's awesome (I'm opening 10 mp Nikon NEFs on mine, FWIW).
I initially started with 2 gigs of RAM, and that was miserable in more ways than one. After 4 gigs of RAM, Aperture ran much better...but still not snappy. Following the advice of others in this forum, I got the ATI card you are considering, and it has made a world of difference.
This speed is addicting, however. Now I'm pondering, incredibly, "What ELSE can I add to the mix to make it even FASTER." I've read that some have success with faster drives. Others recommend even more RAM. I might try more RAM down the road, but then again I push the machine in other ways (lots of Rosetta apps, a Parallels instance of XP, etc). Still, nothing really ever feels slow.

  • MBPro C2D 2.33GHz/3GB RAM drops frames playing H.264@1920x1080

I've been trying to watch with a MBPro C2D 2.33GHz/3GB RAM a movie (in .mkv container) coded in H.264@1920x1080 (a blueray rip actually), but both Quicktime (I have Perian installed) and VLC would drop frames time to time.
    Processor never goes over 100-120%.
Do I have bad codecs installed? Some ideas? I thought my mac would do the job...

H.264 is a complex video CODEC, and there can be many factors in the implementation process which would effect what you're seeing here. It would be nice to see some H.264 analysis tools in order to give us more information about the video stream-- I plan on embarking on some live H.264 video projects for doing live educational video delivery, and access to such tools would be a real plus.
It seems as if the costs in H.264 hardware encoders are dropping rapidly now, with a standalone hardware device (e.g. from Mango in Israel) which does encode/decode audio and video over ethernet coming in at about 5-600 USD. There are even standalone set-top box style decoders for under 200 coming out of China now.

I believe not - Mavericks requires a 2008 Aluminum or later.
I believe the highest yours can go is Lion (10.7) - personally, I'd stick with Snow Leopard because you'd also need more RAM (4 GB would be minimum, more is much better).

  • Portege R500 - Can I use 3GB RAM?

    Hallo,
may I ask if there is a way to boot with 3GB RAM, so to use the the 1GB that it won't be able to see as ramdisk?
    Thanks.

I know that it can see only 2gb, the problem is that you cannot install a total of 3gb because it doesn't boot.
If it could boot, i would still see 2gb ram, however maybe i could use the extra 1gb as ramdisk, which if i create it
now i will have to subtract it from the 2gb that it has.
So the question is can i boot it somehow with 3gb which right now i can't?
    Thanks.

  • Is 3GB ram worth it, and how does the 2.33Ghz and 256GFX card handle WoW?

Well I was totally set on getting a MBP until I saw my friends 24" iMac and I fell in love.
Here is what I want to use it for:
iLife - I want to get back into ENJOYING programs on my computer again and not mindlessly doing nothing on a PC
Podcasting - Looking to do a podcast with a friend
Audio design - Love to make my own songs
Video editing - Final cut, more as a hobby and some stuff for my church
Gaming - World of Warcraft is really the only game I play
    Computer stats:
    24" iMac
    2.33Ghz
    2 or 3 GB Ram
    256 Nvideo Gfx card
    250 GB HD
    My question is this:
I was hoping to get a 512 minimum Gfx card in my computer (mainly just for gaming) but the iMac maxes at 256. Is this performance fine for a game like World of Warcraft, is it ok for editing etc? Im just tired of bad FPS on my PC and don't want to deal with that again, it would almost defeat the purpose of a new computer. Also, regarding RAM, from what I have seen Macs with just 1GB handle multiple programs running AMAZINGLY well, I know games are a bit more demanding, and I am unsure if 2GB will be just fine since Macs operate differently, or if I should get the 3GB RAM if needed. The RAM is the only REAL price jump in my decision so Im not sure if its worth it or not.
    Thanks in advance.

Awesome! I was timid about going from 2.16 to 2.33, but my friend who works at the Mac store said its a noticable difference, and the price isnt that bad. I too usually play WoW in Window mode, I like being able to tab through all my other programs and not feel "locked in" to WoW. What is your usual FPS with all settings maxed? I just start feeling sick when I get choppy picture and I am trying to raid or PvP. 7-18 FPS normally and 2-5 FPS on boss fights really doesnt cut it.
As for the extra HD space, Ill have to take a peek. Im currently running a 160GB HD + 250GB External, I seem to be fine on space, and to be honest, since my Mac will be new and clean, I really wanna keep anything NOT needed on the computer off of it. I just felt my PC's were always bogged down by the 100GB of crap I put on the main HD, I was planning on getting a 2nd FW800 External and just store all my files on multiple drives. I've been told its better to edit video off external drives rather then the main HD as well.

  • Hello !, can i install Mac OSX Lion to my PC (not mac)  i have got Intel Core2 Quad processor and Gigabyte P35-DS3 and 3GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD4850 Sapphire graphics Card ?

    Hello Guys
i want to install MacOSX to my pc
i heard something about that (like OSX86 project ?)
i have got Intel Core2 Quad processor and Gigabyte P35-DS3 and 3GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD4850 Sapphire graphics Card ?
    please answer .......

Teknus...  Here's the issue.  For starters, I understand software licensing issues may not be interpreted the same in all countries (although they are still applicable).  I also understand that everyone is not familiar with what software licensing is.  It is technically possible to install OS X on a PC (as you have seen on your friends computer).  However, Apple has designed OS X to only work on Macs.  In order to get OS X to work on a PC, it must be modified ("hacked").  As these forums are owned by Apple, we are not permitted to provide you with instructions on how to hack their OS.
Having said that, I have used OS X on PCs.  It is not a pleasant experience at all.  The experience is actually poor enough on a PC that I would not even use it... opting for Windows or Linux instead.  You're simply sacrificing too much of the true OS X experience when you try to run it on standard PC hardware.  If you want to try  a different operating system, give Linux a try.  There are many free versions out there and they will run on just about any PC.  The forums are also very helpful.  Linux is much more similar to OS X than Windows.
I understand that Macs are expensive and that you would like to use OS X on a PC.  The simple fact is that using it on a PC would not be the same as using it on a Mac.

  • About to purchase a MacPro trying to figure out if i need the Westmere Dual Processors or say the single processor 3.32 ghz w/3gb RAM? This is for the electronic prepress department of a printing company. Mainly we need to have multiple apps. running

Will be using applications all at once like Quark ,CS5... Indesign, photshop, AI...etc.
Will be exporting and writing PDF's and Postsript files constantly along with a few networked servers.
Just a lot of application work!
Right now the department has 5 Macs 4 of them are the older PowerPC's and one is a 2008 or 2009  MacPro 2.8ghz QuadCore (singleprocesser) which is by far the fastest machine. Now we need another one or maybe two more but would like to be even faster than the MacPro we have but not go over the 3,000 mark for price.

buy 2,8 4-core and upgrade to W3680 yourself. sell the 2.8 or keep it as backup. Very affordable 6-core, or just spring for the fastest single cpu BTO.
Invest in 8GB DIMMs (4 x 8GB) and SSD - 3rd party RAM, 3GB is enough to boot, period.
Wait for SATA3, more bandwidth, Sandy Bridge E Xeons.

  • Installed 3gb ram, but only 2gb usable?

I installed an additional GB of ram on my thnkpad T400, and after booting up, I right clicked computer in the start menu and went to properties. It says "3GB installed (2GB usable)".  How do I make all 3 GB usuable? from what I understand 3 GB is the max on a 32 bit OS
EDIT: Now after going to system configuration>boot tab>advanced>i set the total memory to 3000MB, and now under properties on my computer it says "3GB installed (2.46 usable)

Not that it helps, but I've got some notes about this issue on my T400,  and what sort of RAM I could make available.  Note that I'm running Win 7 Pro 64 now, not Vista 64 as it says in the notes.  You couldn't make me go back to Vista or any 32 bit OS if it was the last OS on earth

  • No programs open, but 3GB RAM in use?

I'm running into some problems with the amount of free RAM I have available to me, and it's causing serious performance problems.
I have a new 2011 MBP and I just ran into a situation where I ran out of RAM and the computer became extremely sluggish.  I had 1 Safari window open and XCode open, editing a very small project.  Between these two programs I was using about 600MB of my total 4GB of RAM.  Even though I was only using 600MB of RAM on actual programs, Activity Monitor reported I was out of Memory, and did not say that any programs were using all my memory, only that it was gone.
I decided to quit all open programs, but the problem did not go away.  Sitting there with no open programs, my computer was using 3GB of its total 4GB of RAM in either wired or active state, and another 750MB in inactive state.  I seem to be entirely unable to reclaim that 750MB even when using the "purge" command in Terminal.  Activity monitor claims that kernel_task is using 300MB right now, but doesn't list any other programs using significant amounts of memory, yet I only have 400MB of my 4GB available as "free" memory.
If this were only a reporting error from Activity Monitor, and the RAM really was free and it was just reported incorrectly, then that would be fine.  But the computer behaves as if it's constantly out of memory.  Also, rebooting isn't a great solution because this happens to me all the time, even after reboots.  It only solves the problem for a few minutes.
Any suggestions?  Does this happen to anyone else?  I didn't notice this behavior on my old 2007 MBP (also with 4GB RAM).

A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • 24" iMac and 3GB RAM limit issues

I have a legitimate concern with the 24" iMac and wanted to know if anyone else thinks it's an issue. Read Apple's tech note on late model 2006 iMacs including the new 24" model.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/HWTechRAM/Articles/RAM_implementation.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40003899-DontLinkElem entID5
In order to use RAM in an interleaved fashion it states you must use matched pairs. Meaning same size and type. SO.....if the new iMacs will take a 2GB SO-DIMM then why won't it register 4GB total? You can configure your new iMac with 3GB of RAM but it won't be interleaved. On top of that 2GB SO-DIMMs are super expensive in the +$700 range. More then MacPro's FB-DIMMs.
I don't see anyone talking about this but it seems to be a legitimate concern.

That IS the point, what person paying $2000 for a computer would be willing to pay another $1500 for a 4GB RAM upgrade? I just think right now it's hurting Apple's sales of the 24". The 24" encroaches on the prosumer market and at this point in time an affordable 2GB of RAM may seem adequate now but most likely not in 6 years. Which is how long I had my Digital Audio Power Mac. So I think anyone in the prosumer market NOW, like myself, looking for a machine that will last a few years may look away from the 24" and steer toward the Mac Pros. My needs fall squarely in between the 24" iMac and Mac Pros but unfortunately my budget does not. I could live with the 24" even with the expensive cost of the 2GB SODIMMs. I would in fact wait until the prices fell. What I can't live with is the fact that the iMac will only ever be able to use an uninterleaved 3GB when the possibility of an interleaved 4GB seems to be there. I was only able to keep the Digital Audio because I squeezed every ounce of life I could out of it because of various periodic upgrades.
Reluctantly I'm going with the Mac Pro but I REALLY wanted to get the 24" iMac. Thats all.

  • 3gb ram on 1st gen 17" mbpro

So it seems that the new speed bump has introduced memory support > 2gb, which is about time.
Does anyone know if this is a firmware upgrade or can the 1st gen 17" mbpro handle it as well?
17" mac book pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

MBP on Core Duo can support up to 4gb (limited by 32bit CPU, however other components on logic board are ready for 64bit operations). That's theoretically. Physically supported amount of RAM might be (and it is) limited by BIOS (logic board firmware). Core 2 Duo MBP theoretically can support 1.099 terabytes of RAM (if it'd be a real 64bit, not 40bit as it is now it would support 18.5 million terabytes of RAM :)))). Physically it's again limited by firmware.
The only question that bothers me now is why 3GB??? Why not 4? Is it because one memory slot now soldered on the board with 1GB and you can chose 1 or 2GB on the other one?
The thing is, if you chose 3GB configuration, it won't be dual band memory because memory sticks have to be same size...as far as I know. Any ideas?

  • Has anyone received their C2D MBP with 3GB RAM?

For those that have ordered a 15" C2D MBP with 3GB of RAM:
    a) have you received their order yet, and if so, did it take a while to ship (mine's taking forever to ship);
    b) do you feel that the extra 1GB was worthwhile paying for in terms of performance under programs such as photoshop CS2 etc.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   667 MHz PPC

Yes, I received my 15-incher with 3gb of RAM and 160gb HD. I ordered about an hour after the store came back up with the updated specs on 10/24, it shipped late on 10/26, and I received it on 10/30.
I've not tried CS2 - I have that but currently run it on my Dell desktop. I'll be migrating my photography workflow over to the Mac next spring, when Adobe univeral binaries become available, at which time I'll replace the Dell with a Mac Pro.
I can say, having started working with the Aperture trial and Parallels running Windows XP (to which I have a gig of RAM dedicated when running the VM), that the extra memory seems to make a significant difference. I'm not at all sorry I bit the bullet for that extra gig - especially since Apple's price vis-a-vis that upgrade seems very reasonable relative to the aftermarket memory providers.
Good luck on receiving yours soon. This is a wonderful machine...

  • 3gb ram in MBP

Has anyone upgraded their mbp to 3gb? I just got one a couple days ago and am trying to decide on a ram upgrade. Yes I will be using cs3 and some 3d programs. Is it worth the 200+dollars?

if you can afford to throw money around, then you could go for 2x2GB in the knowledge that you won't get more than 3.2GB of actual addressable RAM. but, you'll theoretically maintain a whisker of increased memory speed over the 3GB config.. which you'll most likely never notice even if you ran benchmarks.
the other options are to either order a CTO config direct from apple with 3GB preinstalled, and be prepared wear apple's quite expensive RAM prices..
or, you can just order a 2GB config and buy a 2GB stick yourself for a better deal (just make sure you get a good quality one), which will leave you with a 1GB stick with no place to go. you can either use that in another machine if you have one, or ebay it to get some of your cash back.
