Is 6Mb REALLY all I can get out of my Rage Pro video port?

Question

All the material I've found online says only 4Mb sodimm's can be used in the expansion slot.
I'm assuming that it's because either no other size chips will physically fit or people have tried and the system doesnt recognize more than 6Mb.

I haven't heard of any larger DIMMS available that will fit, or that the on-board is capable of using or addressing anything other than the 2 or 4MB VRAM sticks. One note of caution when you are installing VRAM, the slot is not like the RAM sockets where you insert the chip in straight. The slot is spring loaded, so the chip inserts at an angle then you close it down like closing a door on a hinge, the little plastic tabs that hold the VRAM down are very fragile and break easily, as I can attest. They should bend out of the way then spring back to clip the VRAM in place, just be careful with it.
Just to clarify about the RAM specs, the motherboard capability was 3x256MB (768MB) RAM chips, but at the time the G3 was shipping the 256MB sticks on the market were too large to fit in the Desktop case, so the printed specs said that the G3 Desktop was limited to 3x128MB (384MB)RAM max. The low-profile 256 sticks came available later and the G3 specs were never updated to reflect this available option. Also, some 256MB modules are manufactured in such a way that the G3 can't address all of the RAM on the chip. See these notes from Low-End Mac:

The beige G3 supports 256 MB DIMMs, but they must be built using 128 Mb chips. DIMMs built with 256 Mb chips will work, but the memory controller will only see the first 128 Mb of each chip. Compatible 256 MB DIMMs will have 16 memory chips, eight on each side.
RAM: at least 32 MB (expandable to 768MB, desktop version requires low profile DIMMs), uses 3.3V unbuffered 100 MHz 168-pin SDRAM, 3 sockets accept 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, or 256MB DIMMS (some tall DIMMs may not fit desktop case)
VRAM: 2 MB SGRAM, expandable to 4 or 6 MB, uses 3.3V 83 MHz 144-pin SO-DIMM
