Is 720P 960 or 1280 pixels wide?

In FCP, the Preset choices for Sequence Settings include DVCPro 720P, which turns out to be 960 pixels wide. Panasonic brags that their D2 camera (which I just shot my first footage with) is 1280 pixels wide. Then there is the Canvas "view as square pixels" choice.
This gets real confusing real fast. (I remember something called "The Industrial Revolution", which involve STANDARDIZED interchangeable parts, which fueled American success and democracy), but that concept seems to have gone by the wayside in the Digital Era. Oh, well...)
Can anyone explain the actual resolution of 720P and the correct "square" setting to poor me?

I was wrong. Panasonic's HVX200 P2 camera records 720P at 960x720 pixels. The Preset in FCP for 720 P is also 960x720. I had been looking at Wikipedia's explanation of 720P, which states that it is 1280x720.
I'm still confused about "Square Pixels," however. If I set the Viewer or Canvas to show square pixels, the image looks OK; if I set the Viewer or Canvas to not show square pixels, the image looks distorted. I would think that the pixels would have to be not-square to expand 960 to 1280, but the opposite seems to be the case.
Can anyone explain this to me?

How can I convert my logo 300dpi (274 pixels wide) from EPS to Gif format?

I have a logo that needs to be fixed for web purposes. It looks great in print but very poor quality on screen. I need one for my website and HTML email newsletters, along with a high quality GIF 300 DPI (274 pixels wide) for a HTML coded signature. I tried it in Photoshop to save this file as GIF format. But it seems my files is 274 pixel but it is 96 dpi rather than 300dpi. How can I convert it from EPS to 300 DPI (274 pixels wide) GIF file format??

If your logo is 274 pixel wide at 300DPI it will print .9" wide. DPI is meaningless for the web For displays and displaye drivers do not use the image file dpi setting. Displays are run at one resolution normally their manufactured pixel resolution. Display these days are manufactured with resolution ranging from 96PPI to over 300PPI so your logo will display 2.8" wide on a low 96ppi resolution display and .9" wide on a high 300ppi resolution display. The the difference between Jpeg and Gif is color Jpeg supports 8Bit color so 16M colors but does not support transparency. GIF only supports 256 mapped colors reduced to 255 colors it you want transparent empty pixels. You can also use PGN format which supports transparency and 8 or 16 bit color.

Photoshop CS5 can only decode fax encoded images up to 32767 pixels wide and tall

Dear Sir/Madam,
Can you please help me? I am scanning large drawings using an Xerox 6204 Large printer/scanner. The resolution is set at 600 and saved as .tif. Photoshop CS3 can open files with no problems, but CS5 gives me the following message:
"Photoshop can only decode fax encoded images up to 32767 pixels wide and tall"
I can also view with infarview and open with applications such as corel draw. Am I missing a plug-in or patch update? The same file can be opened in both Photoshop versions if I scan at resolution 300.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

I agree with you... it's a little odd to save on fax tiff format... to be honest, it's not like we have an option on the matter... the XEROX 6204 Large Format Printer/Scanner either give us .Tif or .PDF options... Anyway's no problem with CS3 or other software like mentioned above... so even knowing it's a bit strange to use such format, still does not explain why on CS5 I get this error message. Furthermore if I open on CS3 and save as (same file name and same format .tif) I can then open on CS5!!!!
To my surprise, I did not know it was saving as a fax tif... all I get is tif. Even so if all other software including an older version of Photoshop can open it why CS5 can not? What is missing? As mentioned if scanned at 300 dpi it opens... Confused. Very confused!!

Pixel-wide distorted lines jumping around

I admit that topic sounds confusing - but then, so is my problem:
A few weeks ago I noticed some distorted lines on my MBP screen (first generation 15"). The appearance is as if two adjacent rows of pixels "bleed", they seem to be identical, smearing whatever is on the screen in that position out across this pixel-wide band (there are several such bands or lines, both vertical and horisontal).
The really weird thing is, they come and go - they're mostly there and mostly in the same places (two vertical ones and three horizontal) but occasionally they disappear, then reappear, and, stranger yet, they shift about when I move the cursor to the lower right corner of the screen (at which point the entire screen seems to shift or jump slightly - one pixel? - up and to the left).
The lower right corner is inactive, the only thing that happens when the cursor is there is that the dock pops up - but the lines don't react to the dock appearing when I put the cursor anywhere else along the bottom of the screen, only the right lower corner.
I didn't do anything (that I'm aware of) when it first occured - no installs or re-installs, no updates, nothing like that. I haven't dropped it, stepped on it or had it run any hotter than usual, in short, no particular event or behavior caused this problem to start...

MacBook Pro 2.0Ghz/2.0 Gb RAM Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I'm having the same issue. It just started this afternoon. Do you have Parallels? I was using Parallels with Windows Vista Business when it first started. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not, but Windows was doing some weird things with screen resolution, jumping between a couple different settings by itself, just before this weirdness started. At first I thought it was Windows but then when I switched back to the Mac I noticed it was doing it there too.
I've rebooted, and changed the screen resolution, but nothing has helped. The text looks kind of blurry unless I mouse over it and then it either gets sharper or way too sharp as if it's been through a heavy sharpening filter. Anywhere I move the mouse there's sort of a pixel-shift where the pixels look as though they're being smeared around by one pixel. Also, If I move the mouse quickly left and right the whole screen goes back and forth about a pixel.
There are two other interesting things about this situation:
1. I'm using a dual screen setup with my 15" MacBook Pro and a 23" Cinema Screen. It does it on both of them, and continues if I unplug the CS and only use the MBP screen.
2. If I log in as another user, *it doesn't do it anymore* - only under my main user account does it happen, which also leads me to believe that it might have to do with Parallels. At least it would appear to be software related instead of hardware related.
Was there anything you can think of that you did to make it stop? This is really annoying!

5200 ONLY ALLOWS for 960 X 1280 resolution in Windows XP

The driver for my GeForceFX 5200 isn't letting me use my monitor to its full capacity of 1024 x 1280 resolution.
Before I installed the driver, it would.
Running Mandrake 9.2 Linux and Fedora core lets me run it in 1024 x 1280
Windows limits it to 960 x 1280. Why? What's wrong?

What's wrong is that the drivers aren't working properly. Are they MSI's? Install the nVidia ones instead. ( ver 56.72 for XP, or ver 56.64 for Win98 )

Pb G4 1.67Ghz running OS 10.4, right side of the screen 2, pixel wide vertical lines, a few days later colors posterized on pics and vid. Vertical lines don't show screen capture, but pics still posterized. Hardware test from disk shows ok.

Right side of screen started showing 2, pixel wide vertical lines. A few day later colors in pics and vid posterized. Vertical lines don't show in screen capture but pics still bad. Ran hardware test from disk, ok, adjusted color in sys prefs, new profiles a bit better but still bad, mpeg worse, jpeg bad. No better in new user account. Now a month later, right side has 8 vert lines and occasionally a slightly darker area in bottom corners for a few seconds. Reset pram, battery plugged into adaptor 99%. I can notice, for a slit second, when the screen saver is on, when I move cursor to get back to desktop, true color of image can be seen for a flash of a second.

CPU and paintbrush /blur brush @ 300 pixels wide

Hey guys I've been a Photoshop user for close to 15 years. I have ver. CS2 and a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core CPU 4200+ 2.21GHz CPU /1GB RAM (6 years old along with the version CS2 running WinXP SP3) I plan on upgrading this year my hardware, OS (to WIn 7 64-bit) and the Adobe Production Premium suite to CS6 (After upgrading to CS5.5 since I am ineligible for the upgrade from CS2. )
One of the things that has always bothered me in Photoshop CS2 was when I set a paintbrush or a blur brush to 300 pixels wide and I'm working even on a small 4x6" 300dpi canvas If I make a brushstroke it takes seconds to make a rendered stroke. I plan on doing digital paintings with a Wacom tablet 8x10, 11x14, 16x20" in size with Photoshop CS6.
I read that as of 2008 CS 3 Photoshop will use the GPU for rendering/processing some effects. Is this true for PaintBrush and blur tools?
Granted we are talking about a 6 year old mid-level CPU and now new technology but I would like to know along with using 8 GB RAM

I have read in past posts that PS is more a memory intensive program than a CPU intensive program, so it appears more RAM is better than a faster processor. It is not uncommon to have 24 g of RAM now.
The lag with big brushes, liquify, blur, etc. is highly dependant on the video card and specifically the driver.
So it seems that 8 gigs of RAM and 1 gig of VRAM is necessary for average performance with some tools.
PS does use multicore processing but still uses just one video card.

Light dot, 3-4 pixels wide

this is my first post to the community after two years of using apple products.
I started with the white macBook, added an ipod touch and now i own myself a macBook Pro unibody, purchased July 2009.
Now theres one thing with the glare display:
In the lower left corner, there is a 3-4 pixel wide spot that is lighter than the rest of the screen. it "dissapears" if looked from the top and is best seen when i look at a right angle at the screen or slightly below and from the right side.
Its very hard to capture it on camera, because of focus problems.
anybody seen anything like this on his macBook Pro (uni)?

thanks for the information and yes, it was there from the beginning. i recognized it after some days of work with the MBP. unfortunately, i didnt let anyone know at applecare about this immediately, but i simply had too much work in the last three months.
i could bang my head against the wall, when i think of the little bump on the underside of the MBP, which was also there since i recieved it. apple could use that against me, i should have returned the laptop immediately. its on the righthand, about 6cm from the side and 10cm from the front. it seems to be even and circular, maybe its standard, but i have nothing here to compare it against.
shouldn't the underside of the unibody be completely FLAT?
however, i have managed to shoot pictures of the display flaw with manual focus, slightly focusing "behind" the screen-level.

Hi - please help me with this, somebody - it's driving me mad. the URL is http://www.wuizmendez.co.za. I know enough to be dangerous, and am on the point of leaving the more complicated bits to a 'real' web designer. My problem is similar to someone who earlier who had the six nested tables. :O

Right - now after writing all that down, here, I then went to the css file and checked that too, and sorted out a few oddities. In one place I had put maxi-width on a box size. Which isn't an option, it's either a value or its 'normal'. Anyway, after correcting these issues, e.g. in another place I had put a number only, instead of 12px - when I checked again, Course 1 and 2 were fine, and I think Course 3 was as well but now it isn't. The index and enrolment page also still have the margin on the right.
I think it's external style sheets and not in the css. So am checking but can't see anything invoking padding on the right or margins.
Into the ether I send my quiet desperation and will go off and make some coffee. According to Voltaire, this increases intelligence and God knows I need it.

Create a new thread and type several lines of text. Then select select several lines of text and choose a font, e.g. Courier New. Not all selected lines are changed and only a couple of lines remain highlighted. For instance:
It is difficult to prove the existence of aliens.
Photos exist with aliens, but they could be fake.
On the other hand, photos without aliens could be fake too.

Select a line of text and change the font to Courier New. Then select the line again and it will show Arial. Change the font to Courier New and the text will change back to Arial.

Copy a URL and paste it into the editor window. The URL will be shown as a hyperlink using blue text. It is not possible to continue with normal writing without changing the text of the link. The text insertion point is captured inside the text of the link when trying to click below the link.
After pasting the URL, use the arrow key or mouse to move the cursor to the end of the link, then press RETURN and start writing normally. You can than move the cursor to the beginning of the line and use BACKSPACE to move the text up, after the link.

When replying to a thread and pressing the Quote Previous Message button and then clicking inside the quoted text, for instance, to remove some of the content, it is sometimes no longer possible to move the text insertion point outside of the quoted text back to the normal editing area.
When this happens it helps to switch to HTML and then switch back to the Full Editor.

While writing normal text in the editor, it sometimes becomes impossible to edit a line of text. Copy some text into the editor window. Select the text and choose Syntax Highlighting form the >> insert toolbar. Undo using Ctrl-z. It is no longer possible to use any of the >> insert functions. After that it is also not possible to post the message, resulting in an unexpected error and the content is lost.

Syntax Highlighting shows several <span> at the beginning and end of the Syntax Highlighting block after posting. This affects old and new posts.

When changing the width of a table column, entering the 2nd number gets punched into the cell content instead.

Select Syntax Highlighting, Plain from the >> insert menu, then copy and past several lines of text (code) into it. Or, copy and paste the text, then mark the text with the mouse and select SH from the insert menu. Many times, the insertion point is not reflecting it's actual position when you click inside the text. Very often it is also not possible to position the insertion point to the end or beginning of a line using the left and right arrow keys; the insertion point jumps to the next line, even though the end of the line has not been reached.
For instance:
The text insertion point [|] is showing up between the words "point" and "is", but when pressing the delete key or entering text, it affects a different area.

The original or initial post of a thread is shown with a grey background when browsing. Depending on the web browser application, this background is also copied when doing a copy and paste of the text, provided the target window supports rich text editing.
Change the target editor window to plain text.

After resizing a pasted image to the same size than the original, the quality is much worse. The following shows a screenshot of the original and copied image:
When resizing a picture by moving the image end-points, the editor does no longer show the current picture dimensions (pixel x pixel) as it did in Jive 5. Also when copying a picture between documents, the picture is enlarged and requires resizing.

BluShadow I know you are in favor of reenabling code formatting and ditching the Syntax Highlighter altogether. I've also heard that users would prefer the advanced editor to open by default. Anything else on the wishlist?
correction, I would certainly be in favour (favor to you ) of reenabling code tags, mainly because I work quicker by copy/paste and by keyboard than by having to click through a load of buttons (that currently don't do what they should). I've not said that syntax highlighting should be ditched altogether, and I'd certainly be in favour of it being there, just so long as it provided a decent formatting that was appropriate, so code actually looked like code, and the ability for people to copy/paste the code out of the forum to their own environment wasn't corrupted with double line spacing (as dude has already mentioned) and the addition of the line numbers it puts in (the line numbers are useful for reference on the forum, e.g. when we want to say "you're problem is on line X", but not good when you copy/paste code out to your environment and have to spend ages deleting them all to get the code to do anything). If it's too difficult, then removing the line numbers from the code formatting would be preferable to having them there and not being able to copy the code out without them.
I agree with dude that it would be good to be able to highlight portions of code with bold or colours, which the old forum didn't allow, but this one does, so it's really a combination of old and new that's needed. And as dude highlights, the supressing of blank lines is a pain as it can make the posting of multiple code commands become all compressed and difficult to read, and is not representative of what we have in our interfaces such as SQL*Plus etc.

Obviously that's a basic example; in reality we can be providing a solution to someone, explaining multiple steps and commands to demonstrate their issue and the solution, and having to go back through the code once we've pasted it adding back in all the line spacings, is a real pain and time consuming.
Certainly, having the advanced editor options available immediately for replying would be better than having to switch to it manually, especially as most people using these forums are going to want to paste code in (what with it being a technical forum and not really a social forum), and the basic editor just doesn't allow for any suitable code formatting (unless the person is mad enough to switch to HTML mode).

Apple TV and 3D Content

I have an Apple TV 2nd Generation, and am considering getting a 3D TV. What I am wondering is about the Half Side By Side Format. There are some of these on YouTube, and I have some videos I am considering processing to Half Side By Side. What I want to know, is that if I convert the Half Side By Side to an m4v, play it on the Apple TV 2nd Gen, and a 3D TV, if it will work like other 3D Content like ESPN 3D.

HDMI 1.4 is a specification that allows the transmission of Image data that exceeds 1920x1080 (HDMI 1.3) and some other things..
3d content is actually just two images that are side by side so a normal 1080 movie would be 3840x1080 (two 1920x1080 images) and the TV takes that stream and flickers alternating side on the screen, syncing up with the glasses that you are wearing, giving you the 3d effect.
The Apple TV resolution is far smaller than this. (1280x720) - so in order to get a 3d image streamed to it.. you would effectively have 1280 pixels wide to work with, so 1280/2 or a side by side set of images would be a video resolution of (640x360) for a down-sampled HD movie. So it is possible, but would probably not look great.
Interestingly I wonder if itunes home sharing would automatically down-sample and stream the proper resolution for us? This is worth giving a try.

Full screen gradient - poor quality?

Hello Forum
I'm using actionscript 2 to create a full screen gradient
across the screen as a background. (see code below).
It looks ok, but if I look closer the quality is not that
great. It doesn't seem to have enough colors to create a smooth
transitions from color A to B... Is there a way to improve the
quality? I'd like to avoid having to import a huge jpg or gif as a
background... there's enough to load already.
Any insight appreciated.

Likely it's a combination of the colors you've chosen for the
gradient, and
the area you are filling. There's only so many colors that
can fit in the
given space. For example, an area the full screen width might
still only be
1280 pixels wide - so the max colors you can put in there is
1280... If you
fill with light blue to dark blue, it might look spot on. But
if you go from
light blue to deep red, it won't be as smooth. It can't be.

Page not adjusting to browser size

I've had to edit this as my problem has slightly changed.
The website I am working on is here
Whenever I adjust the size of my browser window the content (the box in the middle) stays fixed and won't adjust to the broswer size.
I know it's possible to make this work as I've seen it on other Muse sites such as site of the day websites like this one

Your page is already behaving the same as the example provided. The background image is resizing to fill the browser window size and the page width is fixed.
Your page width appears to be wider that is commonly recommended. There are still a significant number of website visitors on 1280 pixel wide displays, so a 1600 pixel wide page will force them to do horizontal scrolling. You might want to consider a narrower page width. (Also many users with large display will still be working with browser windows smaller than the full width of the display, so a value smaller than 1600 pixels is preferred. Perhaps 1440 max.)
It appears the visual appearance of your page is positioned offset ~260 pixels from the left edge of the page as defined in Muse design view? Perhaps a left margin amount? You probably don't want margins of more than 20 or 30 pixels.

Retina Display Export Settings?

I recently bought a new 13 inch Macbook Pro with the Retina Display and was super excited to use it with Lightroom 4. I began to edit and export photos for airplane-pictures.net for upload. The website requires that the photos be a .jpg file between 1024px and 1600px on the long edge and less than 3MB. On my old MBP (Macbook Pro), I always exported photos with the same settings at 1280px on the long edge with 72ppi, and a quality of 80 and high sharpening for screen. I did the same thing with my new Retina Display MBP and the photos look terrible. There is an excessive amount of jaggies that make the image look really over sharpened and even out of focus before and after uploading. (I have tried adjusting quality, pip, and screen sharpening but they have resulted in no improvement) However, if I keep those settings, but I don't resize the image at all and leave the "resize to fit" box unchecked and is opened in Preview, the photos look beautiful, AND they are fit perfectly in my 1280px screen. So it's like the photo is automatically resized when I export it without checking the box and it seemingly fits at 1280px, however the website will not accept at the large proportions of something like 5363px × 3352px. Does that make sense? In short, when I resize the photo in export to 1280px, it looks awfully out of focus and over sharpened, but when I don't resize the image and open it in Preview it fits to my screen and looks gorgeous! Has anyone used Lightroom 4 with the Retina Display and figured out some sort of solution? Again, when I used these same settings on my OLD MBP the photos looked just as great.

The website needs to understand how to serve images to retina (or the windows equivalent - hiDPI) machines. Many are not. Many websites need some extra code: for example this: Jao's photo blog: A much simpler way to serve retina displays the right images . Image sites like flickr, smugmug, 500px etc, all do this correctly if you upload large enough images but those are exceptions. Also, even if you are using a website that understands how to do this, your browser might not be new enough to ask for the higher res image. Only newer versions of Firefox and Chrome do this. Safari has always done it right since the retina machines came out and on iPads and iPhones.
My guess is that the website you are using is not doing this right. Which is not surprising as these displays are still fairly uncommon. So your website probably resizes the image at the size it is thinking it is displaying on normal screens.
Lastly, high sharpening is usually too much. Also think about the size you need. A 13" retina has a 2560-by-1600 pixel resolution. A 1280 pixel wide image will look good when it takes up about 50% of the width of your display. At that size it will be about 1 pixel in the file per pixel on the screen. If it is displayed larger, it will look unsharp. So think about how wide on the display it will be shown and determine from that your maximum size you need. Preview is not a good gauge as it by default doesn't show 1:1. You need to change the setting in the preview preferences->images to be "1 image pixel equals 1 screen pixel" and then do a command-zero on your exported file to see what it actually looks like. Also, this only works correctly if you set the resolution of your screen in System preferences to "best for display"
