Is 800 MHz G4 enough for iDVD disk image?

The specs for iDVD 5 say 733 MHz G4 minimum. I have an iBook without SuperDrive, but would like to create a DVD and save as a disk image to transfer to a Mac that does. Is an original 800 MHz G4 iBook capable of doing that or am I cutting it too close on the specs?

Thanks, Len.
I went ahead and installed it and created a project for three of my iMovies of my travels. They are all 3-1/2 to five minutes long and all have chapter markings.
I did see the spinning beachball briefly when switching some menus, but the encoding worked fine and didn't put a drag on the actual creativity, like moving buttons, changing fonts, dropping in photos, etc.
Going to make a disk image later for transfer to a Mac with a SuperDrive
Anyone else have any issues with this speed of Mac and iDVD?

  • Will iDVD Disk Image work for creating DVD's on PC

I created a disk image of video that I have made DVD's from. I want to send the disk image to friends to create DVD's but they have PC's. Is there a way for them to use that disk image to make CD's? What programs would they use? etc.

    Hi Parrish Jones
Welcome to apple discussions. The good news is that a disc image burned through iDvd is identical in content to the finished dvd. So if your friend can use the video_ts folder to create a new dvd (on his choice of PC Dvd burning software) then there shouldn't be a problem. At worst you may have to first provide him/her with a burned iDvd rather than the disc image (depending on weather or not s/he can read said image on a PC).
I personally use Roxio Toast to burn the disc image to Dvd-R. And Roxio also make a PC version of this software called Roxio Creator. Although I've read the PC version for Windows Vista isn't nearly as good as the Mac version. (why I don't know).
    http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/creator/system-requirements.html
Most folks who run Windows Vista / burn Dvd's on a pc do not necessarily use Roxio products as opposed to Nero or CDBurnerXP (and there are other alternatives also listed below for the PC).
    http://cdburnerxp.se/download.php

Your choice (or rather your friend's choice).

  • 667/800 Mhz v 1066Mhz for Logic 8

Looking at what is on sale:
I can buy 2.4Ghz from Apple at full price or go to somewhere else where they are cheaper but there is a difference??? Not sure if older models or built ad hoc or what .....
    The basic differences are:
    Apple sell with
    2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    System Bus 1066MHz
    Memory 2GB (two 1GB) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM; supports up to 4GB
    One FW800 slot
    The cheaper models £1033
    2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Data Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Memory DDR2 SDRAM - 667 MHz
    One FW400 & one FW800
Can buy 4gig RAM for £28.71
    Summary
Cheaper ones seem to have same processor and extra fw BUT system bus and RAM speed are slower.
Would the 667Mhz RAM and 800Mhz data speed be significant for running Logic Pro8?

  • IDVD Disk Image - How long does it take?

    Hi,
I exported my iMovie to iDVD, added the necessary effects and am now trying to save it as a disk image for ripping out DVDs later. How long does the "Save as Disk Image" process normally take? Mine has been at it for over 2 hours now. It seems to be stuck in the "Process Menus" stage and says "Rendering menu video asset...". Last time it got stuck at this same place , so I cancelled it and rebooted the machine. Now it seems to be stuck again at the same place. Any ideas how long this typically takes?
    Thanks.

depending on processor (G4, 5, quad, dualcore, Intel), MHz/GHz, size of RAM, speed of hd … you have to calculate between realtime and 10x length of project.... (1h project=10h rendering)
reading in your specs "macbook": make sure, 10 - 20 GB are free on internal drive to make iDVD working smooth..........

  • IDVD disk image burning

I created a disk image from an iDVD project and now I want to burn it on DVD.
I checked first on Apple DVD Player and VLC and the DVD played fine. Audio and video worked.
Burned using Toast, but when I played it on my standalone DVD player, there was no audio! I thought it could have been due to the empty AUDIO-TS folder, but I remembered it's supposed to be empty (unless it's a special audio DVD??).
Went back to the .img file, mounted and used DiskUtility to burn. Again, I checked first if it played on Apple DVD Player. It did, audio and video were OK but when played on the standalone DVD player there was no audio.
I tried again with DiskUtility and used a slower burning speed. Result: still no audio when played on a standalone DVD player.
The burned DVDs play with audio when I view them on my Powerbook.
I wonder what could be wrong. Should I go back to my iDVD Project even if audio and video are fine (on the disk image)? I'm at a loss.
    Message was edited by: lovewg

If it plays in your computer player (and you say it does), the place to look for problems is in the set top DVD player playback.
Some set top DVD players don't like writable media.
If you didn't use 'good quality' media like Verbatim, or Maxell burned at 4x or slower, your disc could have a lot of burn errors that are causing problems. Computer players tend to have better error correction than set top players and are more tolerant of burn-errors.

  • IDVD - disk image missing audio

I made a disk image of my iDVD project (with video & audio) to save space on my external hard drive. It appears that the audio did not transfer. Any help appreciated.

It appears that the audio did not transfer.
Not enough information, as that description can cover two different scenarios.
    1. When you play the Disk Image in DVD Player there is no audio. That is a problem.
    2. When you look in the TS folder of the disk image you find that the AUDIO_TS folder is empty. That is not a problem, it always is unless you have made an Audio DVD.
    Which is it?

  • Why does screen saver prompt for secure disk image password?

Okay, seems like an odd problem, but here it goes.
I go into System Preferences->Dektop & Screen Saver.  As the program "loads" availabe image sources and such I get a pop-up requesting a password to my secure disk image.
Yes, I have a secure disk image in my home directory.
Yes, the secure disk image is currently "locked" (Not mounted in finder).
I click cancel (a few times, probably 2 maybe 3 times) and things continue along fine.
I select a photo source that I want for a screen save and exit peferences.
I then go an start the screen saver (I'm using Hot-Corners).
I get the message "Looking for pictures....." for , well...basically forever...
Sure enough I touch the mouse to leave my screen saver and there is the pop-up again.  Asking for me to unlock my secure
    disk image.
I thought this might be related to Spotlight.  I tried reading several threads and have gone as far as taking my entire hard-drive/volume
and putting it into the "Privacy" tab under spotlight.
Anybody have any idea on what is going on and how I might get it so the "Desktop & Screen Saver" stop prompting me to unlock my
secure disk image?  (WITHOUT having to make sure the disk image is unlocked before I sleep my screen or open the screen saver utlity)
As always, I am only speculating that this is Spotlight related so that could be a red-herring....
    thanks in advance.
    OSX:10.7.3
    imac/3.1G/Intel

Update: i made some progress on this issue.  I found that in the ~/picture/iPhot Library/Database/ directory
there is a file called Library.apdb.  This file has an entry for the secure disk image i have/had.  I moved the file
to Libraryapdb.bkup and sure enough, my picture problem went away.  The screen aaver panel no longer prompts
me to unlock my secure disk image.
So now the next chapter of my problem;when i open up iPhoto it wants to rebuild my photo library(which makes
sense and is what i want to haopen) so i allow it.  After about 25 mins it has rebuilt the iPhoto library, but there is
one problem.  The secure diskimage reference is back in the Library.apdb file that has been recreated!
So now i need to figure outnhow to get iPhoto to remove anynreference to a phot library i once had on the secure
disk image but have long since removed.
I first created an iPhoto library on my secure disk image by holding the option key and invoking iPhoto.
I removed that library awhile ago....
So how do i make iPhoto remove a no longer used iPhoto library?

  • How can I save an idvd disk image to secondary hard drive?

I'm trying to tshoot a burning issue with my 1st imovie/idvd project (some old home movies). I've found the hints to try the 'save disk image' option, but when I choose that option I get a 'multiplexer preparation error; not enough free space'. I know my primary drive doesn't have enough room but my secondary one does. Problem is idvd seems to default to the primary and I haven't found an option to choose to save to the secondary. Probably something simple, but I'm not finding it. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Probably something simple, but I'm not finding it. Can someone point me in the right direction?
You need to move enough 'things' from your start-up hard drive to your external hard drive to free up 10 to 20 GB if you want iDVD to work. Your start-up drive is where everything happens and you can't change that.

  • Problem creating an iDVD disk image

I am trying to create a disk image of an iDVD project which I can burn to an external DVD drive. I am using iDVD 5. I go to file, and select Save as Disk Image. The movie renders for several hours, but when it gets to Burn, nothing. Burn is selcted in the iDVD window and says: Current Operation: Writing, but the progress bar for Burn remains empty for hours until I cancel. iDVD can't be selected in the menu bar after Burn is selected in iDVD. If I go to Force Quit, it says "iDVD (not reponding)".
Can anyone tell me what the problem is?
    Thanks.

    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Well, I have my first movie. This being my first time I'm not sure if I can give anyone advice, but I was finally successful creating an image and then burning it to a DVD.
One piece of advice I am sure of. If this is your first time making a movie with iMovie and iDVD, do NOT start with a long movie as your first movie. Do a short movie and find out how things are supposed to work first. I did a long movie which caused a lot of confusion and frustration because I didn't have a successful experience first.
My movie is of a school show. I was finally successful when I deleted some numbers. Apparently the problem I posted was because my movie was too long for Best Performance. I did upgrade to iLife 6 in the process of figuring out what was wrong. I'm not sure if this is the reason, but I was able to get 72 minutes of video on my DVD with Best Performance (everything I've seen said the maximum is 60 minutes). The Status menu in Project Info of iDVD 6 says I have 72 minutes of video which takes up 3.9 GB of a 4.2 GB DVD. Once again, this being my first time, I'm not sure if this is because I'm using iLive 06.
One word of caution about iLive 06 (and I am speculating here). I think it is created to work optimally with the newly released Macs with the Intel processor. They run twice as fast as G4s. I found my iMovie and iDVD to be clunky when I edited after the upgrade. Many edits would have up to a five second pause before you got (what I call) the spinning beach ball and then the beach ball would spin for five to ten seconds before you could do the edit. I think I am going to move up my Mac upgrade schedule.
Thank you to those who gave me advice. It was frustrating because of the time involved, but I am amazed with what we are able to do with video today.

  • Any gotchas for encrypted disk images?

I am about to set up e-bills and e-statements at various banks and credit cards and wanted to check a couple of things before doing something that may end up being bad
The assumption I am going with, is I will create an encrypted disk image to store all the PDF's.
    1. Is that the right thing to do? Or is there a better way to keep the data secure?
    2. If I do so, what is the backup impact? Can I simply set up a task to copy and paste the entire disk image to my external drive?
    3. If I want to open the disk image on another computer, can I? How will it authenticate the user/pass on a different computer?
    4. I can backup an encrypted disk image to a FAT-formatted external drive?
    5. And finally, I have read disclaimers that if I forget the password the data is lost irretrievably. But also, that the password is stored in keychain. So if the password is stored in keychain, the worst-case scenario can only happen if I forget the master password, right? I don't need to truly remember the password to the disk image necessarily, right?

    baltwo wrote:
Your profile info indicates that you're running Tiger. If so, post to those forums. If you're running Leopard, update your profile info. What are you trying to protect and from who? Is your computer secure?
IIRC, encrypted disk image passwords are independent from Keychain Access. So if you forget it, then you're hosed. BTW, that's the major failing with encrypted anything. If you forget the password, you're hosed. If the disk image gets corrupted, it's useless with or without the password. Anything stored in an encrypted disk image needs to be backed up in an unencrypted state and stored in some kind of physical thing like a safe. Methinks your a bit paranoid. Disable auto-login, use high-level passwords (that you remember), don't enable the root user account or activate a master password, and you should be secured enough.
I updated the profile. I am running Leopard. So this is the correct forum.
What am I trying to protect? I thought I put it in the first line - statements from banks and credit cards.
From whom? From unwanted entities who may get access to my computer, in any way.
I didn't get the part about the safe. Can I or can I not back up an encrypted disk image to an external drive "as is"? What about possibly opening it up on another computer? And how about putting it on a FAT-formatted disk? I repeat my original questions, but for a reason - they seem to have not been answered.
I do not have auto-login, and I remember my strong login password. I don't have my root account enabled. Under this scenario you think my data is going to be secure? What about if someone were to get control of my computer? Forgive me on this one, I am a switcher so there is a general paranoia about such things which I would like to clarify before reorganizing my life.

If I create a slide slow of family photographs in iDVD and then save that slide show as a disk image can I just burn that disk image to a DVD in the Finder and have it play on my consumer DVD player that I use with my TV or do I have to burn the slide show from within iDVD.

  • No password asked for Protected Disk Image...

I set up a Protected Disk Image using the given instructions yet when I click on it it does not ask for the password I set for it...? I thought it worked by having to ask for the password before it opens...?

It can be, that the password is saved in the keychain. When it is, it not ask for the password.
When you create an Protected DiskImage, you can choose if the Password should saved in the Keychain or not.

  • Lost password for encrypted disk image

i created a encrypted disk image to store some personal files and now i can not remember my password and its not in my key chain is there a way to reset the password or at least recover the files.

If you could access the files on an encrypted disk image without knowing the password, there wouldn't be much point in encrypting it.
Do you remember anything at all about the password? Was it a name, or a dictionary word? If so, there might be hope of cracking it before the Earth passes away. You'd need the help of a consultant to do that.

  • Cannot create disk image iDvd 7.1.2 (multiplex error)

I'm at my wits end and extremely disappointed.
Basically, I've gone through the threads that I can find, I'm down to importing a basic movie directly into iDvd.  No menus.  No options enabled (that I'm aware of).
When I go through the iDvd process of creating a disk image all goes smoothy until the very end when I get a multiplexor error (no error code or text saying why).
Extremely frustrating.  This is on a new Macbook Pro running 10.7.2.  I don't have problems with my other Apple systems, just this new one.  Perhaps Apple would like to take it back??

    Hi
    Multiplexing Error
Multiplexing error is a very complex problem due to many things (long long list following) -
one common but not obvious reason is that material on the iDVD menu goes outside the TV-Safe area (or just touching it).
So first - turn on TV-Safe area and move any object well inside of this.
Wide screen stretched - usually (as I think) it is due to making a 4x3 movie in a 16x9 wide-screen project OR the other way around. This forces one to on flat-screen TV (or other) set the presenting view right - My has 4x3, wide-screen, zoom and auto-wide-screen and I have to switch this by my remote for some DVD I've made "wrong" way.
Now my long long list on Multiplex Error

Audio - .aiff (as on audio-CDs) (else converted to this .aiff 48KHz)
Photo - .jpg (.bmp known problematic)
    Chapters !
    A.    Using strange letters in video project name e.g. +,/; etc. keep to a-z and 0-9 strange letters in project name e.g. +
as described by Donnyboy69.  Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.
    B.    Location of Chapters
    • Can’t be at start or end of movie (Skip first/start one - iDVD sets this by it self. At the End - no need)
    • Not in a transition (or within 2-3 seconds from it)

    Multiplex Error
    Chuck, Chicago 2/7/2009.
Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.
    by dheb0422
Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.
    One user more writes
To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
    The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
    This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.
    Russ One - suggest this
Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
    Summary - What to try
    1. Chapters
    • Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
    • No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
    • No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
