Is a 10GB "Clickwheel" iPod still supported by iTunes 8+ and OS X 10.4+

I have a 10GB clickwheel iPod that I've been trying to update just to use for some simple mp3 spoken word files and a handful of songs. Not trying to load entire iTunes library on it. Is the clickwheel not compatible with 10.4.11? I've used disk utility to erase and reformat my iPod, used iTunes to restore several times, and unchecked almost all my music just to see if I can get a handful of files to update onto my iPod. I don't care that it's not sleek and brand new, but I certainly hope I can use it still for basic stuff. I'm wondering if it's no longer supported by iTunes 8+ and OS X 10.4+. Does anyone know for sure and can provide an answer? If it should be supported, does anyone have any other suggestions? It seems like it tries to update, but after I see the message that 6 of 100 or 11 of 100 songs have been copied, it just locks up and that is it. Any help would be appreciated.

Doug,
Your iPod should work with no issues on 10.4.11 and iTunes 8+.
When the iPod "locks up" do you hear any clicking noises? Your symptoms sound like the hard drive is having hardware issues.
Here's a trick I used to use to fix the older iPods. It involves opening up the iPod, so if you don't feel comfortable, you might want to go to someone who does.
Take a blade from a box cutter and gently move it along where the plastic meets the metal on the iPod. Use the blade to pry open the iPod from the metal case for the back.
Once you get the iPod out, look towards the bottom of the iPod, and you should see the hard drive with a wide cable attached to it. Take that cable out of the hard drive (gently). Find a Bic pen cap (or something similar) and push it in between the two rows of pins on the cable. Try to make sure the pins are spread apart evenly and all pointing directly out. Once you get that in place, firmly push the cable back into the hard drive and gently put the iPod back together.
You may then want to restore just to be safe, and try loading your music again. I've used this trick on many old iPods to bring another couple of years of life into them. (sometimes this cable comes loose, causing the issues you're describing)

  • Why is my iPod touch prompting me to restore to the factory settings? Some of my apps have stopped responding. Is this why? I plugged my iPod touch onto my iTunes account and a message popped up saying that iTunes couldn't read the iPod

I plugged up my iPod touch to my iTunes library and it said that it couldnt recognize the iPod and the message told me to restore my iPod? Why would it prompt me to restore the factory settings? Also if I restore the iPod will it erase all of my music even though my music is in my library?
Some of my apps stopped working would this be the reason I need to restore my iPod? I am scared to restore the settings and lose all of my music.
I also put all of my apps in the utility folders, would this have anything to do with my iPod needing to be restored?

Becasue something got corrupted on the iPod. It happens sometimes. Just restore the iPod to factory settings/new iPod and then try restoring from your backup.

  • Why can't I move songs from my old iPod to my new iTunes acct and why can't i move new songs from my new iTunes acct to my old iPod?? Help please!

I forgot my user name and password to my old iTunes account.  Apple was unable to assist me in recovering the old account so I opened a new iTunes account.  I connected my old iPod to my new iTunes account but cannot move music from the iPod to the new iTunes account, and vice versa... if anyone can help me - I would really appreciate it!  Thank you!

Was all of the music that is on your older iPod purchased with that older content or is some of it also other content imported originally from outside of iTunes?  You won't be able to purchased content from the older account to your new iTunes library unless you can remember/regain access to that older account.
For other content, you can transfer it using one of the many suggestions mentioned in this older post by another forum member Zevoneer.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2452022?start=0&tstart=0
As to not being able to sync any new content to your iPod, it's likely because you are trying to sync the iPod with a new/different iTunes library.  iPods were designed to sync with only one computer/iTunes library at a time. So your iPod does not recognize this new library as the one it was originally set up with.  In order to associate the iPod with the new library, you need to restore it to factory settings in iTunes by clicking the Restore button from under the iPod's Summary tab.
Of course you won't want to do this until you have successfully moved all the older content off it into your new library.

  • My ipod is displaying the itunes logo and a usb cord.  I've tried reseting it but I can't get it so do anything!

My ipod is displaying the itunes logo and a usb cord.  I've tried resetting it but it didn't work.  Any suggestions?

Your in DFU mood do this:
iOS: Unable to update or restore
Follow these steps to perform a recovery-mode restore on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You may need to perform a recovery-mode restore if you experience any of the following situations on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The device:
Displays the Apple logo with no progress bar or a stopped progress bar for over ten minutes.
Restarts but never displays the Home screen.
Is no longer recognized in iTunes after an update or restore did not complete.
Automatically goes into recovery mode after having an issue while installing an update or performing a regular restore.
How to perform a recovery-mode restore
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is already showing the "Connect to iTunes" screen, please go to step 5.
Connect your USB cable to your computer but not to the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch until step 3.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button down, connect the USB cable to the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen. When this screen appears, you can release the Home button:
Note: If the image of a battery appears, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then start with step 2 again. If you don't see the Connect to iTunes screen, try these steps 1 through 4 again.
iTunes should automatically open and display the following message:
"iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes."Note: If iTunes not open after two minutes, please open iTunes yourself.
Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you see the Connect to iTunes screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, follow these troubleshooting steps if you're using a Mac, or these steps for Windows computers.
    Additional Information
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup.

  • 20gb clickwheel ipod, not recognized by itunes or computer, won't restore!!

Okay, this has been an ongoing problem, with not just one ipod, but two!
My dad and my sister's ipods (both 20gb b/w clickwheel ipods) are completely messed up. Within a week of each other, they have gone from normally functioning ipods, to evil clicking things of doom.
They will not play songs anymore, and alternate between showing the sad ipod icon and the folder icon. Both are ABLE to be placed into disk mode (so they can't be completely screwed...), and make a "whirring sound" in the ipod before any icons are shown. My sister's has been out for service once already, and was supposedly fixed. Now, both are past the 1yr warrenty.
Neither will connect to a computer(we've tried two comps so far.) When connected, the computer will make the coonecting chiming sound, and act as if it's recognizing the ipod, but the ipod will not show up in "my computer", "itunes", or on the "safely remove hardrive" Aside from little connection sound, the fact that the ipod freezes itunes, and my computer, I wouldn't even know it's connected!
Its not our computers, as I have an ipod mini, and it is recognized on both computers, can be restored, updated, ect.
I have restarted and attempted to restore both ipods, to no avail. I have Itunes 7.0.1.8, and am unable to restore it using itunes, as the stupid thing wont recognize the ipod enough to even attempt to restore it! I have tried using previous ipod updaters, but the message "invalid ipod service version" appears, no matter which pevious updater I use.
Would LOVE some advice, as we are at our wits end, and it is disgusting that not one, but TWO ipods are having this same exact problem! Please Help!!!

  • Help: iPod Clickwheel is not recognized by iTunes 7 and XP  :-(

I continously updated my iTunes versions, and now my old iPod Clickwheel 20GB is not recognized anymore. Don't know if software of iPod is screwed up or if there is an incompatibility. Also can not reinstall software to iPod that way - or is there another solution??

  • HT1369 I have an Alpine car stereo with USB port for my iPod, most recently an error message apperared.  Now I am having a problem connecting to iTunes  via my computer, with windows 7. The screen on my iPod still shows the Alpine logo and "Ok to Disconne

Please help. My iPod froze up after playing in Alpine car stereo. The screen shows the "Alpine" logo and the message "ok to disconnect" I have tried to connect to my PC with little success.  Windows 7 does not recognize the iPod with the error message "device error".  I have run the iTunes Diagnostics but it still does not recognize device as "connected"

See my reply to "Transferring Tunes" . Suggestion: From what you said, it sounds like you could easily connect this iPod to a Windows computer. Go back to the computer where you have the 3600 songs. Get the files out of the folder where they reside and put them on the iPod as data (your iPod has to be set up for disc use. So you will then have your music on there as the iTunes music AND the data files. Take that iPod to your Mac. Drag those files from the Finder, where you will see them on your iPod, which will mount like an external disc. (It was set up for disc use). Drag those files to your iTunes Library in the Source List (on the left) in iTunes. You might have to drag them into some interim folder on your harddrive first, like the Music folder within your User.

  • I recently got a screen on my iPod Touch with the iTunes symbol and a USB wire. I connected it to iTunes and it was fine. I got the screen again, but when I plug it in, it wont connect to iTunes because of pass code. HELP!

I have had the iPod for about 2 years, and never had this problem. When I plug into iTunes I get the "iTunes cannot connect with this iPod because of pass code" message, but I can't enter my pass code because the screen won't change! If someone could please help, it would be appriciated!

With your iPod still connected to your PC, try a hard reset.  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
If still no luck, try placing the iPod in Recovery Mode using the instructions in this Apple support document and then restoring it to factory defaults in iTunes.

  • I tried to update my ipod touch but my itunes froze and i had to restart my computer and now it says i have to restore my ipod touch but it always freezes halfway what do i do?

my itunes said to update my itunes and ipod touch and when i tried my itunes froze and i had to reset my computer and now my ipod has to restore and when it does it freezes what ddo i do?

This seems to fit yu symptom:
Hang during restore process: Following Troubleshooting security software will frequently resolve this error. This error can be caused by the default packet size being set incorrectly. There may be third-party software installed that modifies the default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize or MaxGlobalTcpWindowSize entry into the Registry. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance in adjusting this TcpWindowSize values. Typically the default packet size is modified by 3G cellular network card software, ISP communication software, or Internet speed download optimization software. There are legitimate reasons to change the TCP/IP packet size and not use the Windows default settings (for example, network traffic optimization, home/broadband optimization, enterprise app optimization such as database apps, Exchange, and more). Deleting the "TcpWindowSize" or "GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize" entries in Windows Registry could affect the system's performance with other apps or on their network connections. Deleting the customized TCP/IP settings may require the reinstallation of any third-party applications that had modified the TCP/IP settings from the Windows default settings.
There are two ways to resolve this:
You can follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) , or follow the steps below to manually find and remove TcpWindowSize and MaxGlobalTcpWindowSize entries from the Registry.
For Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7: Go to the C:\\Windows folder and launch regedit.
    Go to Edit > Find.
Search for "TcpWindowSize" entries. There are typically multiple entries of TcpWindowSize/GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize spread throughout the entire Registry. If "TcpWindowSize" exists, one or more third-party applications have changed the user's default Windows settings for TCP/IP.
Go to File and select Export. This step will export a copy of the Registry that can be used as a backup of the original settings.
    Delete the "TcpWindowSize" entry.
Search for the next "TcpWindowSize" entry and delete each one until the Registry no longer has any "TcpWindowSize" entries.
Close Regedit, restart the PC, and test.
If you are uncertain as to why these registry entries exist and the PC is a business computer, contact your network administrator and determine what values TCP/IP can be set in their Windows Registry setting so that the PC can update or restore an iOS device rather than deleting the "TcpWindowSize" entry.
If editing the registry does not resolve the issue, restoring on a different computer that did not install the communication software is the step most likely to resolve this issue.
