Is a 1394 mini firewire port for DV cameras a regular firewire port?

I wanted use the mini 1394 mini fire wire port for some peripherals (IDE drive in firewire enclosure). I have digital camera cable with a 4pin? mini firewire plug and a 6pin? normal fire wire plug (both are males). Or mini fire wire ports for cameras only. All I will do is some backups, performance is not needed.
Just cause it fits, it don't make it right. (remember the ADB and Svhs cables?)
I do not want to be surprised with a burnt inexpensive resistor that cost very much to change.
Thankyou in advance

No, Apple dropped the firewire port on the White Unibody MacBooks in 2009. If you you need a firewire port you'll have to upgrade to a MacBook Pro or get a used pre-2009 MacBook.

  • Will a firewire cable work with a mini display port?

I recently upgraded to a new Macbook Pro and I need to transfer my files from the older macbook pro.
Can I use a thunderbolt cable to transfer files from my 2008 Macbook Pro (using a mini display port) to my new Macbook Pro thunderbolt port? It would be great if this could work. Otherwise, I will have to return this (still unopened) cable for another option.
The older notebook is running SnowLeopard (10.6.8), and the new one is running the most recent version of Mountain Lion (10.8.2).
Any feedback or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thunderbolt was introduced in 2011.  So, while the ports looks the same, they are not functionally the same.  You'll need to use another interface (firewire, USB) to transfer files between the two computers.
Personally, I'd hold on to that cable though.  I never know when a cable's going to come in handy.  But that's just my personal preference, not shopping advice :-)

  • Dongle for mini display port

Is there a dongle to convert a mini display port or thunderbolt port for use with a firewire 800 cable in order to use migration assistant in the event I decide on a new MacBook Pro this year? Is there a better way to handle this issue?

  • Late 2009 Mini: FireWire port - what size is it?

All I know is that the normal FireWire cable I have doesn't fit in the mini,s port.  Googling suggests that there exist 8,9,4, and 6 pin variants of FireWire, although it doesn,t state whether those correspond to different form factors.  Apple tech specs are certainly no help.  When I telephone around to best buy or radio shack, asking if they stock a normal FireWire to Mac mini forewire cable or adaptor, what should I really say?
    Thanks,
    Chap

What are you connecting to from the Mac Mini to?
The Mac Mini uses a 9 pin Firewire 800 cable.  Most PCs use a 4 pin Firewire 400 cable, and camcorders do too, though some only use a USB port which can't be adapted to Firewire.  A very few use the 6 pin Firewire 400 found on older Macs, which allowed the device to get power from another Firewire device.  You'll want one end to be Firewire 9 pin 800 for the Mac, but the other end may have to be something different.  http://www.macsales.com/ sells a full array of Firewire cables and so does the Apple Store.  It is rare that Radio Shack or Best Buy does, as they mainly focus on connecting PCs.

  • How can I connect multiple devices to Mac mini display port? I need to connect a Canon 5D to my Mac and display the result on a VGA video projector. I am using mini hdmi to mini display for the camera. Can I connect the VGA to any other port?

Hi there I am connecting a Canon 5D to my laptop trying to use it as a webcam trough camtwist.
At the same time I need to output the streaming to a videoprojector.
The cam is connected to the mini display port do there is no port available for the VGA cable anymore.
Do I need to use a different port for the projector? Should I buy a video card?
Can't connect the camera via USB as that is too slow and it will freeze.
Many thanks for all your help

  • I just ran a software update for Java and MacBook Pro SMC, now my Mini Display Port to HDMI TV is not working. The TV is flickering. The Mac Display is fine.

I was just watching / streaming TV off Safari on my actual TV.
I'm using a Mini-Display Port to HDMI cable for the connection to the external display.
Software update popped-up and said there was an update for Java and for SMC.
I ran the update and upon the computer restarting, my external display (my TV) is no longer working. It is now flickering.
It won't work in Mirroring or set up as an extended display.
I've reset SMC / PRAM / Safe Mode / Even restored from a Time Machine backup (From before the updates were done).
    What could it be?!

I keep saying this over and over, in the hope that people who do a search will find it.  Apple cannot possibly test for or be reponsible for the bazillion combinations of adapter, cables, and TV's out there.  The only monitors that are 100% guaranteed to work with the MacBook Pro are the Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays, because, they're made by Apple.  They're expensive, but they work perfectly.
My guess is that you bought a cheap MDP to HDMI cable, or have a defective one.  From my reading of these boards over the past few months, cheap cables have a high failure rate.  And the regular priced ones have only a slightly less of one.  Try a new one.  Make sure you do not damage the Thunderbolt port.

    Hi Gilly,
I have no proof, but I think it will not work with an adapter, only Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt.

  • I have a macbook 13"screen purchased in 2007; I want to hook it up to my HDTV; I purchased a mini display port to hdmi adaptor but it does not fit.   what kind of adaptor will work for this model?

I have a Macbook, 13" screen, purchased in 2007.    I want to hook it up to my HDTV; I purchased a mini display port to hdmi adapter but it does not fit.   Any suggestions?

If you connect yourMacBook using a MiniDVI/HDMI adapter you will need to use external speakers for audio since the pre-2010 MacBooks will only send video through the MiniDVI or MiniDisplay Port . The MiniDVI/HDMI doesn't carry audio and there's no audio plugs on the TV to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
If your TV has a DVI input plug you can use a MiniDisplayPort/DVI adapter. Then a DVI cable to the DVI input plug on the TV. The TV will have RCA audio plugs for use with the DVI. Plus DVI gives a sharper image than HDMI.

  • Need a mini display port and audio to HDMI adapter for mid 2009 13" macbookpro

Can some body recomend an adapter cable that plugs into the audio (mid 2009 MacBookPro 13") and mini display port and outputs to HDMI with audio and video all together for a TV?  I would rather not run a separate audio cable in addition to the HDMI cable.

  • Mini-DVI port: monitor goes black for a moment if wiggle the adaptor

I have an Early 2009 mini 2.0GHz, which I'm using with the included Mini-DVI to DVI adaptor.
I've discover that if I press down on the adaptor plug just right, the monitor flickers to black for a moment, as if the adaptor were pulled out of the Mini DVI port.
    I know: don't do that.
But it can also happen if the monitor cable gets tugged on just right (how I discovered it), and I'm concerned that the Mini DVI port may be loose on the motherboard, that it may get worse, that it may flicker intermittently without provocation, etc.
On the other hand, maybe this is just how the mini is built and I'll be wasting my time getting service.
So I'm hoping some of you can poke at your minis and see if it happens to you too.
    Instructions For Proper Poking:
º Have everything plugged in with computer and monitor on
º Press down gently on the plug that is plugged into the mini's Mini DVI port
º Try a little wiggle, press from the end of the plug where the wire comes out to get a little leverage, etc.
º Try gently picking the mini up a few times, so that the monitor cable is hanging down from the mini
It only happens sometimes for me.
    Thanks

So I just ran through the little test matrix you outlined in your first post with my Early 2009 mini. Result: no trouble whatsoever with intermittent connection. I would say what yours is doing isn't normal. Maybe some other people will try and report their results.
Mini DVI has been out there for a long time, albeit not on the Mac mini, but on other Apple notebook products. I have not heard that the connection is not "robust" ever. And I've been following the MacBook and MacBook Pro display forums for a couple years now.

  • I have a Samsung HD TV and I purchased a Mini Display port to HDMI Adapter today. For some strange reason I get no display on my HD tv. I even tried switching a few HDMI cables and nothing popped up. I made sure my computer was updated. Help pls

I have a Samsung HD TV and I purchased a Mini Display port to HDMI Adapter today. For some strange reason I get no display on my HD tv. I even tried switching a few HDMI cables and nothing popped up. I made sure my computer performed all software updates, and I even tried calling Apple Support. They just told me to keep trying different hdmi cables and see if anything pops up. Does anybody know what the problem is? My HDMI cable is from "rocketfish" also my display port is too.

You may have the screen refresh rate set higher than the TV is generally able to track reliably. It may be able to get there most times, but occasionally loses sync because it is out of its nominal range.
I suggest you sit down with the manual for the TV and find out what resolutions at what refresh rates it intends to support through VGA, and make sure your screen settings are near (or below) those limits.

  • Monster iTV Link for Macbook- Mini-DVI ports different...

I have been watching movies etc. on my TV through my 14" G4 iBook for the last year using the Monster iTV Link with the mini-DVI end. I recently bought a Macbook and expected to do the same with it, but the mini-DVI ports are a different shape!
I have scoured the internet for some information on different mini-DVI ports but have come up short. Can someone explain why Apple would install a different mini-DVI port on the Macbook? Or not install an S-video?
Regardless of why they did this, I now need a new adapter or Monster needs to make a new iTV Link cable for Macbook. Has anyone seen an iTV link for Macbook? Is there one out there I can use?
I am assuming my other option is to buy the mini-DVI to video adapter, use the audio part of the Monster cable I currently have and get a S-Video cable. However before I acquire more cables and adapters...
Can someone confirm that the the Mini-DVI end of the Mini-DVI to Video adapter is the correct shape (version) for the MacBook.
    THANKS
    Macbook Intel, 14" G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It would appear the Monster guy is confused what cable you got. The iTV cable I bought up on Google has the standard round-din S-Video connector found on 15" and 17" Powerbook G4s of the same generation, but I don't think that is found on the 12" Powerbook. What you need is a DVI to S-Video connector to hook up the iTV cable from all indications.

  • Extender for Mini Display Port. Need help.

I am running a setup with a 30m optical extender for DVI. I have just upgraded to the 8-core Mac Pro with 27" display which uses mini-display port. But that will give me maximum 1920x1200 resolution that is way too low for the 27" and I have to buy a converter from mini-display port to DVI.
Is there any available extender cables for mini display port (30 meter)?

that will give me maximum 1920x1200 resolution
To go higher than 1920 wide, you need Dual Link.

  • Solution for worn mini-USB port? (charging connection unreliable)

I thought my battery was going bad, but just realized that my mini-USB port is apprently worn. When I plug in either my automobile cigarette lighter charger, or my regular plug-in charger, the charging connection is not reliable. Unless I position everything just right, the charging connection isn't made.
Has anyone else experienced this issue -- and hopefully found a solution for it (short of replacing the whole BlackBerry)?
