Is a 2nd generation Ipod unable to update ios beyond 4.2.1?
I have an older Ipod 2nd generation that I am trying to use for some APPS but cannot download because ios 7 is required. My ios for the ipod is 4.2. Can't seem to go any further with update attempts. Update attempts result in "you have the most current ios."
It can't be updated past 4.2.1.

I have 2nd Generation iPod touch and latest iOS release for it is 4.2.1. Most of the Apps on iTunes now require iOS 4.3 at minimum. Isn't it outrageous that Apple is not supporting such iOS update for older iPod? Is there plan to discontinue such support?
I have a 2nd generation iPod Touch too and I currently have 24 Apps that I cannot update. Unlike you however, I hold the App developers responsible for the fact that they (the App developers) are not supporting iOS 4.2.1.
It is the App devloper who decides to modify their App so that it then requires a particular version of the iOS. Since a developer can have a free and a paid version of an App, it begs the question why don't they have the older and newer versions.
I now check the requirements for an App before I click on update. If it still only requires iOS 4.2.1, then I can update. If it requires a higher iOS, the I simply don't update it. One good thing is that by now, most of the older Apps are quite stable and bug free, so the update is usually to give something extra. Since I cannot update the App, I simply forgo the "extras". -

If Apple cannot help us, what is the alternative without us hacking the device?Even hacking it you cannot go further than the equivalent to 4.2.1. The only thing Apple could possibly do is add more RAM.

Are you sure you have a 2G iPod? The 2G iPod has an internal speaker and volume buttons on the upper left edge while the 1G does not. The 1G can only go to iOS 2.1.2 via iTunes and as high as 3.1.3 via

Are you sure you have a 2G? A 1G can only go to 2.1 via iTunes but a 1G can go as high as 3.1.3 that you get here:

iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software
For 4.2.1 you need iTunes version 10.X and that requires OSX 105.8 or later.
If you have 10.4.11 you can only go to iOS 4.1 since that OSX can on go to iTunes 9.X -

My ipod will not let me use all but like 3 apps fully without closing me out of the app and i can only use safari or the app store for about 10 seconds without it shutting down the app. This has been happening for about 6 months after the upgrade to ios 4. My iPod touch 2nd generation forced a software update to apply to my ipod via itunes. what effect did this update have on my ipod software, as i still cannot download some apps?

The error comes about whilst trying to download certain apps from the app store, including CSR Racing which when i tap on install a message box pops up saying "This App Is Incompatible With This iPod touch", another time for a different app it came up with a message saying "This app requires OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics capability.
