Is a Airport Base Station Neccessary to WiFi tween eMac and iBook?

Hi All!
Subject line says it all. I've an Airport card in my iBook that works very well outside, but I'd like to go online with it around the house via my eMac which has DSL but no airport card. Can my iBook access the web via my eMac if I bought my eMac an Airport card or is a Base Station a must? How can I set this up if possible?
Thanks for any info!
JimWG

Hi JimWG,
Yes, it is possible (see this article), but using a wireless base station (router) is a better solution. For example, with an AirPort Extreme base station you would connect the DSL modem to the WAN port, the eMac to one of the LAN ports and the iBook wirelessly.

  • I have a airport base station, will it work with netgear and linksys cards?

So I am at a hous ethat is using a low end netgear router to wirlessly serve about 4 computers. I am the only Mac in the house and suggested they a Airport Base, will their linksys and netgear wireless cards work with the airport Base or should they just upgrade to a high end linksys router?

    Hi Chris:
Yes, the AEBS is compatable with any 802.11 B/G cards including Netgear and Linksys cards.
I've used many of the wireless routers that are available (Netgear and Linksys) and recently upgraded to an AEBS. I've found you really get what you pay for. I've had little problems with the AEBS and cross compatiability.
    I hope this helps!

  • Mac mini won't recognize airport base station

    Hi,
I am posting a new thread because I can't find one that is similar to my case. I have a late 2010 Mac Mini. Here is what happened:
    1. Using it this morning to wirelessly print a document. Recieved notice that printer appears off-line.
    2. Re-booted printer, re-started airport base (snow white) , no luck.
    3. Did above again and restarted Mini... no luck
    4. Airport signal indicator suddenly went gray on the bar and notice asking me to join an unrecognized netwok.
    5. restarted Mini... would not recognize my network and Airport Base station
    6. restarted mini and ABS.. still the same gray bars but being prompted to join someone else's network
    7. did no.6, 3-more times... no change
    8. Opened airport utility... does not appear in the scan
    9. opened network preferences and clicked remember network... restarted... same SIGH!
    10. checked system profiler... airport card is on but is "not associated". (Could it be broken but on?)
    11. did no.6 again and also restarted DSL modem... same thing
    12. Turned on my Macbook ABS recognized and was able to print my document through it no problem.
Until an hour after I turned on my Mini, it was fine.
All other devices 2 macbooks, 2 windows PCs, iPod Touches and wireless printers work.
my first instinct was to do a permissions repair but it was taking to long to finish and had to leave... will this help?
ABS and Mac-mini all have latest updates. frustrated ,have to go to work... PLS HELP.
    thanks

I'm sure if this is related but I'm also having a problem connecting a pre-2009 mac mini to an Airport base station. I have two others and they are working fine but one will not connect.
I can see the airport station and get a prompt for my password. When I try it, it times out and cannot connect. Another strange thing is the signal is only showing 2 out of 4 bars. The base station is less than 15 feet away and other devices like my iPhone show a very strong signal. The older mini is only 802.11g so I have left the multicast rate on the base station at 2.2 which I believe is the default.
I had been using an 802.11n USB adaptor but I wanted to go back to the internal wifi because the USB adaptor would disconnect whenever the computer went to sleep. I have the mini connected as a media center on a tv so having to always log again was getting frustrating.
I may try a clean install again, but the machine was just formatted and updated with a clean 10.6 about 2 months ago. I didn't install much beyond eyeTV and a few FrontRow plugins. Any ideas on how to debug wifi problems?

  • Airport Base Station Agent in Windows 7 Hangs when mouting Time Capsule

Hey all, can't figure this one out.
The airport base station agent launches at start up and asks if I'd like to ignore or connect with password. When I choose connect with password the agent hangs, and either goes unresponsive or puts up a dialogue box saying "Could not connect to the disk. Make sure NetBios is enabled and try again (53)." Ususally it just goes unresponsive and I have to close it out. I did briefly have access for a coupple days mapped as "Z" and did a windows back up to it and saw it in "my computer" as drive "Z"
The airport utility itself sees and connects with the time capsule no problem to edit it's settings and so forth. The agent it seems which tries to mount the disk and map the drive with a letter seems to be failing or being blocked somehow. Antivurus software has been removed, the windows firewall ports are open both public and private for the agent AND the utility. NetBios is currently set back to "default" as changing it to "enabled" had no effect.
    Thanks for any help YO!

After setting this thing up as a disk only basically by going through the set up process, at the end, there is a dialogue box that says the time doesn't have a valid IP address. In the input field "router address", I entered 10.0.1.1 and updated settings. The status light stopped flashing amber and turned green and now windows 7 explorer can see it and access it with no problems.

  • Sky and Airport Base Station setup

    Hi,
I seem to be having all kinds of issues with my Wireless network setup.  So much so that I'm going insane with it all.
Now I don't pretend to be an expert in networking issues, I'm a consumer and I am a designer - I don't do technical stuff.  Hence why I am asking the question here.
But I am a good listener, and I'm hoping to learn how to do this the right way.
    Ok.
I have a router that came with my Sky Broadband, and I have an Airport Base Station which I connect to my Sky Router and broadcast a network from the Airport.
Problem is I think I've messed up settings and it's just on an unbelievable go-slow.
Rather than me try and detail all my settings, what are the ideal settings for something like this?
I'm getting less than 1mb download speeds, when I should be getting closer to 7.
I've got iStumbler installed and i've got like 40% signal with 12% noise.
Now I've just noticed my Airport Base Station is showing a warning icon and that the device is not found.
    Help.

Timothy, you're right... the change to 10.4.8 has had us in "Airport ****" ever since the update. Whenever the PB can't find the Airport Extreme (more than 1/2 the time), we open "Network" in "System Preferences" and it's trying to use a 10.xxx address, instead of the 192.xxx or 168.xxx that it should be using.
Our work-around has been to click the "Configure" Button in the "Network" window and then click the "Renew DHCP Lease" button. This results in a change to the address... to a 192.xxx address, as it should be.
Your post got me to thinking, so I went into the "Airport Admin Utility", selected our Airport Extreme Base Station, and clicked on the "Configure" icon. When I went to the third tab (Network) I saw the "Share a single IP address" was set to use a 10.xxx address! What? So, I changed it to use a 192.xxx since there is no 168.xxx option. I have a feeling this may solve our problem...

If you mean the hexidecimal equivalent of the alphanumeric password, then you can find this via the AirPort Utility, as follows:
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup
On the AirPort Utility's menubar select Base Station > Equivalent Network Password

Yes, but not in all cases with it provide your with an "Open NAT" condition that some on-line gaming require. However, for most Xbox LIVE access, it should work just fine.

  • How can I make my iPhone wifi forget my neighbor's Airport Base Station?

I do know how to make my iPhone's wifi "forget" a Network (like, say, a neighbor's wireless router).
However, my iPhone keeps defaulting to a neighbor's "Airport Extreme" Airport Base Station. When it does this, of course I have no connectivity. Then, I have to go in and manually choose my own apartment's wireless router. It's a pain.
I cannot find any way to make my iPhone forget or ignore this neighbor's Airport Base Station. Is there a way?
    iPhone 4S.
Thanks very much for any replies,
    Brooke

That seems to have done it, adviser. Thanks.
I reset the network settings, and also made sure that "ask to join networks" is set to "On."
When it started up, I turned on the iPhone's wifi, and chose my own apartment router (and entered its password).
I then went to the farthest corner of the apartment away from our own router, where the signal is weakest, and turned wireless off and then on again. Even though my own router's signal was very weak, the iPhone still chose that router by default.
If the problem comes up again, I'll submit the question again with the information that I have tried this step. For now, though, it looks good. Thanks!

  • If i purchase a new airport base station can I use my old airport extreme 802.11n (3rd Gen) as both an extender of my wife for multiple iphones and as a router?

I operate an old airport extreme base station 802.11n (3rd gen).
There are 4 iphone5's and 1 iphone4 on my network along with 2 laptops running 10.6.8 and 10.7 respectively as well as two desktops with the same configurations as the laptops.
I get a sense that the iphones may/will be useless the new airport.
Can I use the old base station (operating as an extender/bridge/router) so that older equipment will operate in the short term until they are upgraded?
    Thank you.

They will work fine with a new AirPort base station. You can use an iPhone or iPad to set up and configure the new base station. If you want to use a Mac to set up and configure the new AirPort, it will need to have at least Lion 10.7.5 installed. Mountain Lion 10.8 or Mavericks 10.9 could be used as well.

You can use the older AirPort base station to extend the wireless network. No updates will be needed to your iPhones or Macs.

  • Internet Sharing from some other source TO an AirPort base station

I have an unusual setup. My wifi comes in through some obscure USB adapter in my desktop Mac. This cannot be changed. I then connect my desktop Mac to my Mac laptop with an ethernet cable and enable Internet Sharing. This works fine.
What I would like to do is connect the desktop Mac to the AirPort base station instead of directly to my laptop. Then I could use the built-in AirPort in the laptop to connect to the base station. I've tried using the desktop Mac's internal AirPort with internet sharing, which works sporadically. I would rather use this new base station that I got if we could focus on that instead of fixing this other method please.
Is there a special way to set up the base station to do this? It doesn't work automatically. For example, should I use the LAN or WAN port? What settings should I change with AirPort admin utility?

    Yes that can work.
Enable internet sharing on the desktop Mac from USB to Ethernet.
Connect the WAN port of the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to the desktop Mac. Configure the AEBS to act as a bridge (not sharing a single public IP address).

  • Do I need a airport base station to extend my network or can i use my network router?

I bought a Airport express to enhance my current wifi in the house, and i can't seem to get it to enhance it. There is one room that dont have wifi and it is the room i bought it for. Now when i talked with apple they said all i needed was the express and it should enhance it, but i can't seem to get it to work. Do i need a airport base station of some sort or does my current router work fine. I just need some help and its been 3 months and its getting old. So i appreciate any help.

Do i need a airport base station of some sort or does my current router work fine.
I'm afraid that this will not help you, but at least you will have some accurate information.
Using wireless only, the AirPort Express can "extend" or "repeat" the wireless network that is provided by another Apple "n" wireless router.
Using wireless only, the AirPort Express can NOT "extend" or "repeat" the wireless signal if it is being produced by another router from another manufacturer.
In this case, you will need to connect the AirPort Express to the other wireless router using a wired Ethernet connection. Post back if you need more information about this type of setup.

  • Why does my Airport Base Station continue to disconnect?

It works fine until it just goes out. Every once in a while it just goes out at random times even though it is still connected to everything (computer, modem).I do this to create a wifi connection for my family and I. I have tried all of resets and it still goes out. I do believe it might be something internal. If so, can someone please elaborate more on this. If not, can someone give me some information on how to fix this. Thanks!

I see you are running Windows 7.  Apple just came out with a firmware update for Airport Extreme (7.7.2).  It so happens that this Firmware version requires Airport Software version 6.3 or newer.  The Windows version only goes as high as Version 5.6 or so.  I was also told that Apple is unlikely to upgrade this software.  To make a long story short you need to control your Airport Base Station with an iMac, or an iPhone or iPad with the Airport app.  This solved my problems.  Good Luck :)

  • How To use MacBook Pro as airport base station?

I am trying to set up my MacBook Pro as an airport base station to share my Internet connection. I am running OSX 10.7.2. I have checked Internet Sharing, and checked "Share your connection using "Internet" to computers using: ______________." There are five options, but "Airport" is not one of them. Has this panel changed in Lion? So how do I share the connection?

Tried searching for a how-to here on Apple's site, got around 500 hits that had nothing to do with setting up a powerbook as a wifi base station. Seriously, Apple, this is worse than worthless, it's highly frustrating. You need to fix your support search.
And after you follow the directions in the link provided by JimHdk, you can get yourself a wireless router. Using a wireless router will eliminate the need to have your Macbook pro present and powered up every time you want to connect your iPad to the Internet via wifi. Just because your Macbook Pro can act as a router does not mean it should or that you have to use it as such. A router is specifically designed to do what you want to do.

  • Set up an airport base station

I am trying to use a family members Internet thru wifi and the network shows up as a airport base station. It says that it cannot be set up by this software.
So how can I connect to wifi on my iPad 4? My iPhone 5 had no problem identifying the network like usual set up of wifi?

Since you have an iPad question here....you really should post in the iPad support forum. The experts over there may have some additional ideas for you.

  • Using AppleTV as an Airport Base Station?

Can I connect the ATV using ethernet and then use the AirPort part to extend the range of my WiFi network?
I'd like that, because my house is made from thick reinforced concrete and WiFi signals have a hard time getting through. Connected like this, the ATV would much improve the WiFi reception in the living room so I can have a better connection with my MBA on the couch (close to the TV is probably an ideal airport base station location for iPod/iPad/MBA).
