Is a BPX a Process Steward?

My colleague Aiaz Kazi forwarded this to us:
<a href="http://jkobielus.blogspot.com/">James Kobielus' Blog</a>
The piece Aiaz highlighted, was a discussion he had with the blogger who calls the BPX a Process Steward.  I've quoted it below as it speaks to the role definition "grappling" we are working through here on this forum.
Your comments about this are welcome.
"I had a discussion on this same topic yesterday with Aiaz Kazi of SAP, here at SAPPHIRE ’06 in Orlando. Many of their customers are grappling with the proper definition of the diverse roles in governance of SOA that leverages SAP’s Enterprise Services Architecture (ESA), which is implemented in its NetWeaver platform components, mySAP applications, and diverse composite, vertical, and horizontal apps and business processes.
What Aiaz was describing is a new SOA governance design-time role that sits halfway between the IT process architects and the business process analysts (i.e., the tech and business wonks who use their respective visual development and flowcharting tools to specify SOA-enabled business processes at various levels). This intermediate role essentially catalyzes consensus between the business process analysts and the IT process analysts concerning the eventual process, but doesn’t actually get involved in the fine-grained architecting of the processes.
Instead, this role is more of a “process steward” (my term) who makes sure, whatever new process emerges, that it reuses existing business processes to the maximum extent feasible. The process steward cracks the whip and just says no when IT process architects and business analysts attempt to create new, end-to-end, stovepipe workflows that overlap with existing processes, either in their entirety or in significant roles, routes, and/or rules.
In other words, the process steward role enforces reuse of existing business processes—SOA-style—when developing new processes. The process steward oversees the SOA governance process—the design-time workflow or collaborative process--under which business governance structures—as defined by IT process and business process architects—are crafted, revised, and optimized."

with German (or to be more precise Austrian) as my native langugage I seem to fail to assess the full meaning of the term 'steward' and maybe just because of this feel uncomfortable with it.
To me 'process steward' sounds as it were some subordinate role, something like governanvce accountant, someone counting reuse numbers, annoying both the business analyst and the IT architect.
Nevertheless I like the idea of
<i>This intermediate role essentially catalyzes consensus between the business process analysts and the IT process analysts concerning the eventual process, but doesn’t actually get involved in the fine-grained architecting of the processes.
</i>.
Therefore I'd coin this role a <b>process mediator</b>, someone who gets IT, business analysts and users together and helps them to reach a common understanding and if necessary mediates with respect to different perceptions, requirements, levels of knowledge and most notably ontologies.
just my 2 thoughts,
anton

  • What is different between Analytics and VC Forum?

    Hi Experts!
I don't know what is different between Analytics and VC forum in SDN. of course, Analytics is not Visual composer.
But, I guess that most of analytics questions will be related to Visual Composer in this Analytics Forum.
    How about your opinion?

    Hi Young
Analytics is business process oriented and thus it's domain is BPX hence it is placed under forum for BPX(Business Process Expert).
VC is a tool and it is in technology domain.
First we discuss a scernario based on particular business process. Then we prepare detailed level of analysis-reporting and actionable analytics this business process would need. Then we use tools like VC to accomplish this actionable analytics.
    Hope this helps

  • How BPX can model GP processes?

    Hi,
GP (Guided Procedure) is the process layer framework for SAP Netweaver. But as it doesn't support BPEL currently how can a BPX model GP process for the enterprise? Or in other words how can we translate a ARIS model into GP process?
Any pointers or help in this regard will be highly appreciated.
    thanks,
    Dipankar

    Hi Tarun,
What you mentioned in your post above is the actual development work rather than the modeling. This is more of a developer's/IT specialist's job rather than a BPX's job. What I asked is basically how a business process can be modeled in a platform/technology agnostic way by a BPX (who doesn't know much about technology) so that in later phase that model can be translated into the actual technical objects by the technical experts.
For example consider the following scenario:
A BPX can model a non-interactive (non-human interfacing) process in ARIS without knowing anything about the implementing technology and the technical details. The ARIS model generates BPEL which can be feed into XI which generates the integration scenario and correspondingly the process flow in XI-BPM. Similarly can we model interactive processes (human-interfacing i.e. UI based processes) in a technology independent way then and create the services (in CAF core layer) and the process (in CAF GP layer) and UI (in WebDynpro or VC layer) out of the model?
As far as my knwoledge goes there is no such tool or mechanism available at present. But I want to know whether SAP is thinking in this direction and if yes when can we get such platform where we can have the full lifecycle flow for composite development from concept2implement?
    Thanks,
    Dipankar

  • Business Process: Final Demand Plan Key Figure in the past for APO DP

    Hello APO process experts,
I have a BPX question for APO DP process owners, consultants or gurus:
1.- Have you ever seen in any SAP APO customer, that in their APO DP planning books, they chose or designed to update the Final Demand Plan key Figure in the past closed historical buckets with the Actual Sales?
Meaning that that in the Past closed historical Buckets, Actual Sales and Final Demand Plan, look exactily the same.
Meaning that they create a dynamic Final Demand Plan key figure so to speak, yet they did not choose to create a key figure that also keeps the Final Demand Plan as originally entered.
2.- Would you think that doing the above, without keeping any keyfigure in the planning book that actually shows what the Final Demand Plan was in the Past, is a good practice?
The Demand Planner could still retreive the Final Demand Plan from BI reports, yet, dynamically they could never really see it in the planning book.
3.- Do you think the above dynamic key figure would bias the Demand Planner's behaviour to manipulate the future open Final Demand Plan buckets to enter volumes in order sum to a monthly total, independently of what were the over and underachievements in the past (since they are not really visible to him) ?
I would really like your feedback,
    thanks in advance!
    JD Loera

    Hello Thanks for your feedback.
I agree with your point, and I hope that i still get more feedback from other Business Process Experts.
I am trying to build a case for my client, to challenge the decision of their initial design as this practice is going to hurt the Demand Management process, if what they intend to achieve is a true "unconstrained demand plan"
    Much appreciated

  • Have you officially joined BPX?  How many people have you invited?

For those who are watching the Business Process Expert "general discussion" forum:
The first question is: <b>Have you officially joined the BPX Community here? </b>
If so, <u>thank you</u>.  You are one of the 8,328 people who have already joined in only the first four weeks of this community being available.  Note, too, that we're still in "sneak preview" mode so we haven't even done any announcements or awareness campaigns!  You're in on the "ground floor" with visionaries and leaders.
If you're not an official member yet, please join ... just go to the top of the page in the header under "Profile Management," see the category for "Update Profile," and check the box at the very bottom of that page that says "I would like to join the new Business Process Expert (BPX) Community."  Of course it's free and you get the benefits of posting forum questions and answers, blogging, etc. etc.
Please also sign-up for the newsletter while you're already on that page.  More than 100,000 people already subscribe and find it valuable.  We send a newsletter approximately every two weeks to highlight just a few of the new items and topics -- mostly as a reminder to return to the online community area(s) if you're not already in the good habit of doing so.
Second question is: <b>How many people have you referred to this new community with the recommendation to join?</b>
If you've invited at least three people who have joined, then "<u>thank you</u>!"  If they are new members of BPX and SDN (and if they used your name/email as a referrer when they joined), then you received award points as our thanks.
If you haven't yet invited at least three colleagues to join, please do so.  We think it'll help them in their jobs and careers, and we think it'll help you in your work with them (they're smarter, better informed, on the same page with their colleagues -- including you...).
Thank you for your membership, participation, and for spreading the word.
    Mark Y.

I have had numerous issues. Originally, I couldn't get video to work at all in Leopard (worked fine in Tiger). I just recently did all of the following things:
    Set QT STreaming to 1.5
Set bandwidth (in iChat) to 500kbps (Comcast)
Deleted iChat prefs and ichatagent prefs
Set parallels network to "host only" (was on shared)
    Reset PRAM
Reset security port to 443 (in iChat prefs, server settings)
    Restart iChat (obviously)
Right now, all of my buddies are currently offline, but I did test with apple's auto-bots and interestingly, I'm getting video to work with appleu3test01 and appleu3test03, but I get the same connection problem as before with appleu3test02 ("There was a communication error during your chat"). I'm curious what's different about this bot's settings. I'll report more when I get to test with a real person.

POC on Returns Processing Applies to: SAP 5.0 Summary This is a POC in which we deal with returns. When a complaint has been raised by a customer against a product and if a return needs to happen, how this should happen in this scenario is being demonstrated here. • Re: What is a Business Process Expert?

    Hello all,
Maybe we should open the discussion a bit beyond a "Human Centric" BPX. The main theme after all IS "The Business Process". There are hundreds, possibly thousands of Business Processes depending upon whether you categorize as micro or macro processes. Any one of these either on a micro/macro level function with or without human beings and may utilize machines that assist or automate value added activities/processes which produce higher value service or products in the age old scenario [input > process > useful output & waste output].
When we talk about Expert or Expertise, we are talking about precise know-how, and narrow domain knowledge wether depth or breadth knowledge.
Referring back to a post by Luis Rincones, regarding ideas and concepts leading to BPX, automation of the business process should be the KEY focus of a BP engineer. Back in the late 80's early 90's, we referred to these BP engrs. as "Knowledge Engineers" and their principal goals were to interview "Experts" in order to extract expert knowledge (sometimes 20+ years of experience) and understand not only the flow of the process, but more importantly the RULES which govern all exceptions and variations encountered within the process, as well as "rules of thumb" in case the RULES don't apply.
This is something which if we are truly to orient our Enterprise SOA architecture towards the goals of BPX mentioned above, will require a common "Rule Based Engine", which lives across all domains of knowledge, Objects, & environments, and works together with the design & development environment for the xAPP (I like to refer to them as "Expert Applications") and thereby enable not only the integration and homogenization of input data (via the technology stack), but also integrate the application of logic via a common rule based engine. In this way, E-SOA can also be enabled on the "useful" outbound process enabling services (actions) which mediate/manage/automate the process back to prescribed operating parameters.
Of course, people can not be eliminated from the process. Lexus factory in Korea back in 2002 operated with approx. 60 or so people, 150 robots, and produced >300 units per day. People were mostly involved in QA and deviation functions.
Automating the Business Process optimizes the output:input ratio and should minimize the waste:useful output ratio. By doing so, the ROI, ROA, and operating margins are maximized and competitive advantage gains against other not so able competitors.
Any one else has a few words on this?

You raise a very important and interesting question regarding whether there is any framework for narrowing down the domain of a Business Process Expert.
There are many frameworks out there:
    http://www.bpmg.org/8omega.php
    http://www.prosci.com/tutorial-design-mod1.htm
    http://www.intel.com/technology/itj/2004/volume08issue04/art11_collaboration/p01_abstract.htm
From my experience, it is beneficial to focus on a critical "life support" process for the corporation.  Many times this can be started at the top level COO for instance, asking what is the # 1 thing which causes issues with customers, collections, services, etc..  One such item is "contract to cash" and specific sub-components of this process such as "unbilled hours" which if corrected prior to billing issuance will result in more accurate Invoices, and collections. An improvement of this nature shortens the cycle time of billing to collection, or hour entry to billing calculation, and with improved accuracy increases cash flow and lowers cost per transaction.
What you are suggesting in terms of Media expert, etc.. is more associated with Roles which are aligned with Solution Scenarios within SAP.  Business Processes may span many roles, and are critical to the application being developed.
I believe this is the purpose of BPM, but would welcome any further comments from colleagues regarding framework.
Please take a look at the following BLOG as well as Lakshmikanth does a very good job explaning the landscape:

  • Process control inheritence to child org units - GRC 10.0

    Hi All,
We created few process controls in Parent Org Unit - X. We assigned mitigation control ID and access risks to these controls along with control owners. These process controls are being used as Standard Global Controls
We created another Child Org Unit - Y and copied the sub-process and then selected only 1 or 2 controls which are applicable to the Child Org Unit. This will allow us to use few Global controls and create local controls if required.
Now the issue we observed that the Child Org Unit does not carry the Mit. Ctrl ID & Access Risks & Owners from the same control of Parent Org Unit. When we tried to provide the same Mit. Ctrl ID it is stating Mit. Ctrl is not UNIQUE.
Our requirement is we would like to have the same Mit. Ctrl ID for Global Controls both at Parent & Child Org Unit and different Mit. ID for local controls at Child org unit. This will be easy to identify controls which are from Global & Local for testing and other reporting purposes.
We understood that since we are copying the sub-process to Child Unit it is taking only Process control details, not the access control information as it is provided in Org Unit
Can somebody please guide how to acheive the above requirement. How to inherit all the controls from Parent to Child Org unit reflecting Mit. Ctrl ID, Access Risks and Owners
    We are on PC 10.0 - SP07
    Thanks and Best Regards,

  • Import process flow in the Process Composer

    Hello BPX'ers
I've got a question about the Process Composer, is it possible to import work flows that where created in tools like for example Bizagi, this is a lite bpm tool (takes about 5 minutes to install) and you do not need any heavy pc requirements.
It would be nice to export Process Flows from such a lite tool, and import them with Netweaver.
Or are there future plans to develop a lite version of the Process Composer.
Because if i want to model a process with a customer the first step is to validate the process, not to deploy or build it (yet) ,but just to draw it sow that I get a nice overview, then I don't want the whole Netweaver CE environment to be installed on my laptop.
But it would be nice if these modeled processes could be imported in Netweaver CE..
Are there future plans for this...
    Thanks,

As far as I know, the support of import/export interfaces depends on the adoption of BPMN 2.0, as this version of the standard will introduce a serialization format. BPMN 2.0 is to be finalized in 2009 by the OMG group, and for this reason can be adopted by SAP NetWeaver BPM only beyond the release in 2009.
Unfortunately, I didnu2019t find any externally available additional information.
