Is a colour laser printer the answer?

I have two excellent Canon inkjet printers but I print so infrequently that all the ink is used up in lengthy nozzle cleaning and sooner or later the print head clogs up. Is a colour laser printer the answer? Do the toner or the mechanism suffer from being left unused for long periods? How do printing costs compare? Is the quality adequate for high quality office use (barring pro photo printing)? If so what printer or printer makes can users recommend? thank you.

I assume that I can set up a  laser printer to operate wirelessly. This is important as I often print directly from my iPad which requires wifi.
If the printer has built-in WiFi then it would just be a matter of adding it to your wireless router. If the printer only has Ethernet, then you will need to connect its Ethernet port to your wireless router via an Ethernet cable. This may not be ideal depending on the location of your router.
As for printing from the iPad, the printer does not need to have WiFi. In the scenario above, of having the printer connected to the wireless router via Ethernet, you would still be able to print from iOS devices. But to be able to print from all applications on the iPad, the printer should support AirPrint. There are many companies that don't have a AirPrint capable printer but do provide an iOS application for printing. These applications generally limit what other iOS applications you can print from. So the advice is to ensure the printer supports AirPrint.
Note also that you could connect the printer directly to the Mac. This would avoid the issue above with having to locate the printer near the wireless router. And if you install an application like Printopia on the Mac, it will make the printer available to the iPad (providing the Mac is turned on).

By infrequently I meant once or twice a week, no less.
This would be fine for any laser printer, but this time frame should also be okay for the Canon inkjet. In order to prevent printing problems due to bubbles, dust, or ink clogging, print head cleaning is performed before the start of printing. For your reference, with a Canon MP990, the amount used is about 0.24ml for black and 0.26ml for colour. If you power off/on the printer or replace the ink tank (without replacing the print head), 0.44ml of black and 2.45ml of colour (total) is used. If you perform a deep clean or replace the print head, then 1.98ml of black and 2.45ml of colour (total) is used. These figures vary slightly from difference models, but it gives you an estimate of how much ink is used when cleaning is performed.

Hi I have a Dell colour laser printer ref 3115 cn. I have tried laoding the driver buy my MacBook Pro wont allow it?
    Any idea's?

The Dell specifications indicate that this is a multifunction device.  The printing portion is supposed to be able to use either PostScript or PCL 6.  You should be able to use a generic color PostScript PPD or use the generic pxlcolor driver from OpenPrinting.org.  There is not much chance of getting scanning to work with OS X.
The Gutenprint drivers will not provide what you need.  They only support balck and white printing for laser printers.

  • Can no longer properly print to colour laser printer after latest update

    Hi,
I've just updated my iLife '08/Leopard software using software update. It would appear that I can no longer print greeting cards etc. from iPhoto to my colour laser printer since this update. All photos are printed in a very pale yellow colour that is hardly visible.
I've tried a couple of things to diagnose the problem:
    1. Saved the file as a PS and printed it from a different machine running Tiger. Same result as before: Pale yellow.
    2. Viewed the PS file using Preview on the Tiger and Leopard machines. The colours were normal.
    3. Saved just the image (i.e., no greeting card pattern) to desktop and printed it from my Leopard machine. The picture printed out perfectly on the colour laser printer.
    4. Printed the greeting card to an inkjet. That seems to work, too.
    5. Just in case there was a problem with the new greeting card, I tried to print an old card that perfectly printed before. It, too, came out in a pale yellow.
So there appears to be some problem printing from the latest version of iPhoto to my colour laser printer. I did update the printer driver, just in case, but still have the same problem. Any ideas what else I could try?
The printer is an HP Color Laserjet 2550L

I have just discovered that I can properly print pictures from iPhoto to the colour laser, as long as I don't put them in a greeting card. So that seems to be the trigger.

  • Which Colour Laser Printer/Scanner for Yosemite and Adobe Acrobat XI?

Since upgrading my mac to 10.10 my Epson DX4400 will not scan any more, even with the latest Epson driver update.
I need a better printer anyway, so I would like to replace it with a colour laser printer & scanner.  But I want to make sure I get one that will work with OSX 10.10.2 and Adobe Acrobat XI
    Does anyone have any recommendations?

  • Airport and Colour Laser Printer Sharing-Any recommendations for a printer?

    Hi,
I am looking for reasonably priced (about 400-600USD) colour laser printer that I could hooked up to my Airport Express' USB connection.
Would anyone has any recommadations for a type&model?
One option that I have been examing is Epson's Aculaser C1100. Any experiences with this one?
I could go with C1100N model with LAN connection, but I would love share the printer wirelessly (without the extra effort of rearranging my ip address environment..)
    Thanks,
    Tuure
    Mac OS X (10.4.4)

You are righ, i own a eculaser 1100 connected via airport express too. It works without any problem, if useing power pcs. If I try to prit using an intel mac, the new intel driver will hang up and the printer driver told me an interface type error -1. Epson support told me to ask the manufacturer of my os... Haha, like i said before it works with the old driver for power pc (V 2.3 ?) but for intel mac you have to use V3.0. And only this will not work. Does anyone have an idea for me? PowerPC works fine, win dows xp using bonjour prints fine too. Connection the aculaser directly to the mac book pro will work too, but using airport will no print me anything using the intel mac

    John,
You may be able to find a Color LaserJet CP1518ni for around that price if you look around. At least here in the states I've found it for $299 and less, although it retails at $399 which is a bit higher then you are looking for. It is the least expensive color laser printer we are currently selling (in the US at least) and it includes PostScript 3 emulation.
    Just trying to help.

  • Colour laser printer for home use [sorry to post here]

    Hi,
I am looking to buy a colour laser printer (UK) for use at home mainly for printing documents, pdf files, etc. and use a Mac Pro (hence the link to these forums). I need a network and duplex function. I have been looking at HP's 2605dn but would appreciate your recommendations.
I am sorry to post here

Hey don't be sorry. How are you going to learn? Just before moving from OS/2 to OSX I purchased an HP2500N Color LaserJet. It worked nicely under OS/2 but lacked a few features. I waited a month before connecting it up to my Mac Pro because I feared it would need special drivers and a lot of hand-holding. What a surprise - I plugged it in via USB and printed a web page lickity-split! And the thing churns out the most beautiful copies. It is louder then I like (and I keep it in a pull-out cabinet to mute it) and use it daily. I rarely print in black and white any more - everything is in color (even my billings!).

  • Recommend new colour laser printer? Small and wifi capable for latest apple products,

Which new colour laser printer? I need small as possible, but wifi capable for latest apple products (OS 10.7 and mobile iOS 5). Not used wifi printing before, so getting confused with specs. Not high usage, want better speed than inkjet

You mentioned some office-level multifunction copier, though, costing more: which one would that be?
The new imageRUNNER ADVANCE C2225 with the Booklet Finisher-M1. This finisher will fold and saddle-stitch your booklet on the fly for up to 5 sheets of A4 paper - making a 20 page booklet. And the printer driver for OS X will re-order the pages in your document so you don't have to get the page order correct before you send the print job.

  • Printing with a LED Colour Laser Printer - No CMYK support?

    Greetings.
I bought an Oki A3+ printer (C9655) three weeks ago to output a large amount of images for the editing and proofing of a book project. The results I am getting are pretty bad as Lightroom cannot see their profiles so they cannot be loaded (they can be seen & loaded in Photoshop CS3 or InDesign CS3). Their technical support is saying that Adobe Lightroom doesn't appear to support their profiles which are CMYK. Although the results are pretty good via Photoshop or InDesign, I really don't want to have to import 100's of images into another app just to print a decent quality preview hard copy.
What I expected would be straightforward in printing whatever DNGs I select from a collection via the Print module is apparently not possible.  Is it really true that Adobe won't support CMYK in Lightroom? And if so why?  There are threads requesting CMYK support that go back to Lightroom 2 Beta.
What about printing cards on thick board? What about printing a preview of a book project? It doesn't have to be inkjet RGB all the time. (Admittedly quality really looks "photographic" on inkjet but at too high a cost for previews).
LED Colour laser printers like the one I bought using 4 blocks of toners are becoming more accessible & popular.  Surely there will be an increasing amount of users who expect like I do to be able to output directly to the printer without convoluted workarounds.
Adobe, could you please get Lightroom to talk to Colour Laser Printers that work in CMYK and manage the colour? Getting the printer to manage colour really gives poor results. The colours are pretty good but the shadows and blacks seriously lack density making the result just unacceptable. I am frustrated I have not been able to do the outputs I bought the printer for and it appears that the solution lies in Adobe supporting CMYK outputs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated in getting a solution soon.
    Thanks.
    (Mac 10.6.8)

Thank you for your prompt response Andrew
Please forgive me if I wasn't clear. I don't actually have any CMYK files in my catalogue. Nearly all my files are DNG's that were imported from RAW (if they are edited in Photoshop, it's usually in ProPhoto RGB). What I want to do is output collections directly from Lightroom to paper on the Oki. With hundreds of images to print, I really don't want to use Photoshop. The way I understood it, the printer needed CMYK data to be able to print an image but I think I got it wrong (maybe because Oki only supply CMYK profiles?).
From what you say and from looking at the printer settings options, there must be a way to get Lightroom to send data over to the Oki in a language it fully understands (which I think is by letting the Printer manage colour). I have experimented with different options in the Printer settings, but so far all the results are wrong. I'm now looking at loading profiles in the "Graphic Pro" settings. It looks like they need to be loaded with an installer app and it looks like the only way to be able to use them is by storing them on the printer - which unbelievably means paying over £300 for their hard drive!
Hopefully there is a simpler solution. I'm getting the impression the printer has great capabilities but I'm missing out on them because I can't work out how to get the settings right. What I thought would be pretty straightforward (printing a preselection of images from Lightroom) has turned into weeks of complication and frustration.
If you have any more advice to spare, I would be delighted to read it!
    Thanks again.

  • How do I find a driver for a Dell 1320c Colour Laser Printer for a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9.2

How do I find a printer driver for a Dell 1320c Color Laser Printer for use on a MacBook Pro running Mavericks OSX 10.9.2?

Ask Dell who made the printer and what model is it. Then you can see if there is a matching driver provided with OS X or that can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

  • Suddenly, the color in printed photos is way out. The test pages are of as is the word "Google",on a printed GoogleEarth pic. I have a Fuji Xerox C1110 colour laser printer. Where do I start please?

I don't know if it is 10.7 or the printer or what?

Thank you. I have worked out that it is just black missing. Have latest driver etc, have changed the black toner, phoned supplier. "Bring it in but we are not printer techs" didnt inspire mee too much..
I'll follow those lines though. At least eliminated a few things.

  • Unable to print PDF files to HP Colour Laser Printer

    Hi Guys,
I am having a problem with printing PDF files to a network printer. The printer was purchased recently and is a HP Colour LaserJet CP3525n all in one, printer/photocopier etc. Other documents such as Word documents work, so I don't think its a straight forward issue...
I can print PDF file to other printers, so I know the PDF files themselves are not at fault.
When I try and print to that printer, I just get pages and pages of funny characters coming up on the page... It doesn't matter what sort of PDF file I print either...
Are there any settings I can change that may help me resolve the issue. The printer is networked and shared amongst 4 people.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to print out answers using the form I created

I created an application form for my company. People have submitted their applications, but I do not know how to print them out.
Is there a way to copy the answers into the form and print that? Or something like that?
I cannot just print the answers because it's over 100 pages and would be disorganized.
I basically just need to know how to print out the form I created with the respondants answers.
    Thanks

Here is what you can do...
    Open the form file
Go to the View Responses tab
Select the View menu in the upper right corner of the UI
Select the Details View menu item on that menu
The Details View pane will open on the right side of the window
At the bottom of that pane there is a set of buttons
The first button let's you print the detail view of the currently selected response
The last button labeled Export will create a PDF file of the selected response
Is that what you were trying to accomplish? I'll admit that we need to make print and export to PDF more discoverable and easier to get to - that was too many steps

  • Which Colour Laser should I buy?

I have given up trying to get my Apple LaserWriter pro 630 to work with 10.6 so now I need to buy a new printer. Which reasonably priced colour laser printer should I buy?
I have a 27" iMac, a 24" imac, 17" Powerbook G5 and hopefully soon a second generation iPad which all need to print to the laser. The printer needs to take ethernet possibly wirelessly and USB would be a bonus. I don't have a very heavy usage but it must be capable of occasionally printing up to 200 copies.
On principle I wouldn't buy Dell after the 1997 comment!!
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Many thanks
    David

There is a good discussion on Macintouch today about color laser printers, and how the cost of consumables can greater than the cost of the printer itself. You should keep that in mind as you consider your options. The print quality is very good on most of them, USB and ethernet is pretty standard, with wireless a common option these days. But it is not necessarily the case that a color laser is less expensive to operate than an inkjet. I have both, and I think they have about the same costs. I save the laser for multiple copies, and prints that need to be water resistant, but the inkjet is my everyday printer. The laser is faster for multiple copies. That is its big advantage, but it is somewhat mitigated now that I am trying to eke out extra pages from the cartridges.

  • Problems with variation in colour from printer

Hi, I've created a book cover in photoshop which is going to be offset-printed. I've gone down to my local Kinko's copying place to get a laser proof of the job. I've created two sizes (one is about 1/4 the size of the other). However when I received the colour laser printouts the two printouts were very different from each other. No-one there really could help me. I saved the files in PDF and in high print quality preset and CMYK. The two printouts had colour bars on the side which were the same on both printouts, which is why I suspect that I've done something wrong. Would anyone know why getting a print in two different sizes could alter the background colour so much? I don't want to go to the expense of buying colour charts. Thanks.

How were the size variations created? If you resized them in PS, the pixels would get interpolated and in turn this would lead to different amounts of the color inks in the channels when they are rasterized for print. Therefore resizing should be done by the RIP on the proof printer (or by sending a downsized print job from the print panel, or downsizing it in Acrobat with respect to color sep...).
