Is a Mac/PC still needed as a "hub" for iPad?

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting rid of my home PC in favour of an iPad, as all I use it for is surfing the web.  Do I still need a PC to be able to sync between my iPhone and iPad or can this all be done through the cloud now?
Tony

You do not absolutely have to have a computer any more in order to use an iDevice that is running iOS 5.
Just remember that if you buy movies for the iPad - you cannot download them again from iCloud - apps, music, TV shows, books - yes - but not movies.
So if you are a movie buff and want to buy a few and keep them on the iPad only - that is the chance to have to take if you do not sync with iTunes and something goes awry on the iPad.
If that is not an issue for you - then no - a PC is not required.

  • Help - I'm a newbie to Mac and still need my Internet Explorer browser!

macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Hi - I just purchased a macbook pro and am in the process of designing a website - after encountering problem after problem, the hosting company figured out that I'm using a Mac, and said that their program doesn't support Safari and I need to do my design through an Explorer browser. Microsoft discontinued Explorer for Mac, so what do I do? I heard of a program called Parallels Desktop - has anyone used it, will it work, or am I opening up Pandora's box by installing it on my computer? Changing hosting companies is not an option, so I need to make this work. THANKS!!!!!

You're trying to use a web-site building application that doesn't support Macs? I personally would not deal with any hosting company that won't support anything beyond Windows. Whatever you build with this company will not be accessible to other Macs. But this is your prerogative.
You're correct that Internet Explorer for Mac has been discontinued and it was discontinued at version 5.2x. To run IE for Windows on your Mac you'll need something like Apple's Boot Camp <http://www.apple.com/bootcamp/>, Parallels from <http://www.parallels.com/> or if you're feeling adventurous you can try the CrossOver beta from <http://www.codeweavers.com/>, which will let you run Windows applications without Windows.
Are you opening a Pandora's Box? I don't think so. You do need to take the same precautions you would with a regular Windows machine. That means installing antivirus software and spyware software. Be sure to test your website with both your Mac browsers as well as IE for Windows.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Just ordered new iMac do I still need a modem/router for Internet access

Just  converted to apple, ordered a new IMAC but little confused on Internet access.
does the extreme still need a modem/router,just a little confused after reading all the comments about poor connections etc.
Old windows soldier sorry if a little vague .

The AirPort Extreme is a router, but it is not a modem. You still need your existing cable or DSL modem. That device is usually supplied by your ISP and may or may not include the functions of a router.

  • What video converter app for mac would you suggest to convert videos for ipad mini?

Just recently got myself ipad mini and want to fill it up with movies. i have some but they have wrong format. And i don't know which format is the best for ipad mini(

iPad Mini supports .m4v, .mov, .mp4, and some of .avi files with Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) codec.
Generally, you can choose to convert files to MP4 format using utilities like Handbrake, Format Factory, etc. They are all free.
I have get a PS3 and iPad 2 years ago, sometimes I need to convert files to AVI for my PS3, so I choose a professional converter called AppGeeker. (while handbrake only output mkv and mp4 format, and FF reduces amount of quality of video)
    it works marvelosly for me.

  • Do I still need two hard drives for video editing today?

I have heard time and time again that editors should use two hard drives when editing in Final Cut Pro, it was even written in part of the Final Cut Pro 7 user manual. One was used for the system and Final Cut Pro software and the other was used for storing video.
Is this still true with the newer SSDs available today? Since they do not use a rotating disk, can't my video and Final Cut Pro X work to maximum performance? Or is it still a bad idea to have your video and software on the same drive?
I would be curious to what some have to say and thank you in advance for your help.

Will it work on one drive ?.. in short Yes. Will it work well when I start doing multiclips with lost of angles and a separate track all being ingressed from HDV and wav? .. I suspect not so well .. You see the bottom line is that you are correct in so far as SSD's have no moving parts but the input/out speed (I/O) is not all that fantastic. Multiple video streams when doing multicam (for example) will cause a huge data quantity needed at fast speeds to be shipped back and forth .. SSD's are fast at boot up but after that the there is not all that between them and ESATAII internal drives (I have four ESATAII in my Mac Pro)..
Best practice advice is to have a fast separate drive, preferably connected via Thunderbolt or FW800. The whole thing just works more efficiently and - better. All in all I would say yes if you can afford it and are going to be doing lots of editing which gets more advanced you will not regret the second drive investment.

    Hi,
Thank you for your quick reply.
My DVD drive is a SD-R6112 I found a frimware update on the page you have given searching on the model of my drive but when executing the exe file it says I don't need the update and program stopped.
On another forum someone said the third party firmware I installed should have changed some calibration data of my drive thats why I can not read any DVD-R anymore and no firmware will fix it anymore.?
I still can read CD's and original DVD's but I can not read DVD-R's anymore which is very annoying.
Do you know if Toshiba technicians could re-calibrate my drive?
Can I buy an intern DVD drive for my model?

  • Is it possible for songs to be stored on an external hard drive and not my mac, and still play on iTunes? For example: those songs only show up when I plug in my hard drive. My mac has low memory, and I have a lot of songs.

Title! I'm a starting up aspiring dj/musician. Thank you!

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Longer answers if for any reason you do not think all library files are inside your iTunes folder (changed preferences settings at some point):
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
2011 ilounge article: Transferring your iTunes library - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/  - An article with good background information (similar to the links above), particularly if you are not sure your media files are all grouped for quick answer above. Unfortunately under the single term "transferring library" it describes two very different moves; relocating just your media (not  really transferring your library and not recommended unless you really need this configuration), and relocating media+database (really your whole "library").  Make sure you understand the difference before electing to move only media.

  • Do i still need a redemption code for subscription purchase

I have had Premiere Pro put on my computer using a friend's adobe ID, i switched it to my ID and purchased a plan for just Premiere Pro. all steps followed to the best of my knowledge but when i start the programs (i have Premiere Pro CC and Premiere Pro CC 2014 for some reason) but both ask for a redemption code i never received. I've raked my brain and searched the internet for hours but to no avail. why does the programs ask for something i never got and only help i find for my question was that subscription based purchases don't need one.

    >put on my computer using a friend's adobe ID, i switched it to my ID
That is not according to the license agreement Licenses and terms of use | Adobe and it appears you still have "something" from your friend on your computer

  • Still need my old Nokia for one last important function

The iPhone is a great replacement for my old Nokia E62/T-Mobile, but there's still one must-have feature that's apparently missing on the iPhone before I can give up my old phone.
I connect my MacBook via bluetooth to my Nokia as a gateway for unlimited GPRS internet access. I use it all the time when traveling.
Anyone know of a way to possibly do this using an iPhone?

    Not currently possible.
HOWEVER, you can fairly cheaply buy an EDGE data card (at least in PC Card form factor - not sure what you'd do with a MacBook, but I bet they exist as USB dongles). You could then swap the SIM card from your iPhone out and put it in the data card. It would be using the same account and calling plan, so unless AT&T is running some very sneaky checks on what is using the data, that would work fine. I used to do this with my T-Mobile Blackberry SIM when I had a Blackberry that wouldn't tether properly to a Mac.

  • Do we still need 3rd Party aps for phone calls?

Currently have 2 Skype numbers subscriptions and have always used SkypeMate as my 3rd party ap for connections, which works perfectly. Yesterday, I forgot to open SkypeMate after initializing Skype, but all my Skype calls, including one from USA to NZ, still went through without SkypeMate. This morning, to test it again, I called from my mobile to my Skype number and lo and behold, all calls went through without turning SkypeMate on. Granted, I don't get a dialtone when calling without SkypeMate enabled, but once the number connects, the phone rings as usual and the calls connect flawlessly. So, the bottom line question is: do we need 3rd Party aps when using Skype as a regular telephone? Or has it always been this way and I just discovered it by accident?

It's always been like that.  Without Skypemate the phone turns into simply a USB mic/speaker.  You will be able to receive phone calls, and answer them manually on the computer you just won't be able to dial out using your phone's keypad.   When older versions of Skypemate become incompatible the first thing to go is the keypad capability.  Semi functioning versions of Skypemate can still give you the ability to answer phone calls by lifting the receiver or its equivalent.  So if you don't require the ability to use the keypad on the phone to dial out then you can simply continue to use the device without Skypemate.  I'd be surprised if answering the phone on the keypad actually worked, as I know that functionality does not work with my device without Skypemate and and older version of Skype (6.21).
