Is a Mac Pro 1,1 2.0 Xeon still worth buying?

I have an iMac I have been playing with and getting used to the Mac OS and I must say that Snow Leopard for me is a vast improvemnt over Tiger. It just seems to be smooth and work very well. I am seeing that the iMac I have is great but is falling short on graphics power. I found a used Mac Pro 1,1 2.0GHz with 1.0GB ram and 160GB HD. They are asking $500. That seems high to me with the cost of Ram upgrades and video upgrades. For my use I would want atleast 4GB Ram and a newer ATI Graphics card. I am just looking to people that have more experience with the Mac systems than I have for advice on how much longer this Mac Pro will be serviceable for the a Demanding Home user and what seems like a fair price for this machine considering the upgrades it would need.

People are finding upgrade processors to a pair of 5355s for $300 to get 8-core 2.66 is nice performance boost, but I am still using 4-core 2.0GHz (I have other systems which are faster but I don't need or miss - the 5200 pts score in Geekbench is fine even compared to 9-10-11K system.

I think $500 is 'reasonable.' A Mid-2010 4-core 2.8 3GB ATI 5770 would set you back $2119.

That model is "highly" unlikely to support post-Lion OS (ML) but then Lion is only needed if you have to use an iDevice and some features.

Got a 2006 mac pro desktop, dual 3.0 Xeon, running OSX 10.7.5, and sometimes, the fans will speed up, and run at max, even though the CPU is running cool... sleeping the computer for a minute, and then turn it back on seems to stop it for a while. Any ideas?

I've just acquired a 2007 Mac Pro 2,1 2x 3GHz Xeon and would like to upgrade the graphics card. I'd like to be able to run the Adobe CC 2014 software for 2D animation work. Don't need CUDA for any ray-traced work, just want to be able to run Ai and AE at the same time and have it handle the playback. Mac Pro 2.66 ghz Quad Xeon Freezing when I use any software
Can Anyone Help me, I have a serious freezing issue with My Mac Pro, Everytime I use any software it just Freezes on my ie IDVD, I tried Instaling a new OS System, and repalaced a new Hardrive but with no joy, I'm Guessing its the graphic card now but I dont want to waste anymore money until I'm sure.
ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 SDRAM used to give me dual screen display until the right side failed so now I'm only using one screen, also everytime I'm displaying a video their are thin random lines and a bit of screen display distortions before it eventually freezes on me.
Please HelpMac Pro 1,1 (all Mac Pro models come with Xeon).
What matters is cleaning the X1900 of dust and from clogging intake and exhaust - every three months.
Run Apple Hardware Test from your OEM DVD.
Install SmcFanControl 2.x and keep the fans rpm to 800-900 instead of 499-599 base as minimum at least.
Monitor temperatures with Hardware Monitor or similar.
Have you been looking to see in System Profile: Memory if there are any errors?
Normally, clone backup update weekly and running Disk Warrior at the same time should be done to spot disk directory and file system problems before they get worse. Or any time your system freezes.
Freeze... and what you have 90% of the time is a corrupt directory and other errors.
At which time you may need to restore if you can't fix the problem. And don't rely on only Apple DU First Aid to find and repairs any and all errors.
For Snow Leopard maybe a flashed ATI 4870 to replace the X1900.
You may need to start over from scratch to get things stable once you find what is happening, and work with a test system until then with some trial and error. Format/initialize and clean install of 10.6.x for the OEM 10.4.7+.
At nearly 4 yrs now since it came out, not sure if you have plans for a new one. -

Fastest Video Card for Mac Pro with Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Can anyone offer advise on whether I can update the video card in my Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon computer? I'm pretty sure i can but I have no idea how to upgrade and what to look for in video cards. I do know that I want something fast, hopefully faster than the current ATI Radeon X1900 XT for use with Aperture 3.0. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The front headphone jack on my new mac pro desktop computer does not transmit sound when connecting a headphone or ear buds. The sound still comes from the speakers and is not redirected to the head phone. The port has never worked. Any solutions?
okay, try option-clicking on the speaker icon on the top of your screen. That should bring up a list of sound output options. including headphone. You could try messing around with Audio MIDI. It may be possible that the thing is still stuck inside the headphone jack. Careful use of a toothpick may get it unstuck. I dunno, I've never had a problem with the headphone jack. If all else fails, call Apple or take 'er in for an appointment

Hi guys,
I can only leave my MacBook Pro unplugged for an hour maximum and it never seems to fully charge. It says on the Mac to service battery - which I guess means buy a new battery.
I have had my MacBook for over 5 years now and it does get used probably every day, if not every other. If I brought a new battery would it all work normally again or is it getting old and do I need a new one?
Also, my charger seems to be playing up a bit now as well. It's seems to be temperamental when I plug it in and takes to while to light up and charge. I've attached an image of the battery bit on my laptop as the lead seems to be fine - is this normal?
Thanks in advance guys.Is there any application(s) that your current Mac cannot run that only a new can? Calculate the cost per year of your current MBP and compare that to the cost of a new battery. Spread the battery cost over a year or two of additional operation, how do the dollar amounts compare? If the MBP is functioning properly, I generally find it is more cost effective to keep it.
If the retina display and the SSD storage are very desirable from your perspective, then that becomes a different matter. You are the one to make the final decision.

Mac Pro 1.1 upgrade with Xeon E5345
I just installed two Xeon E5345's being very careful to follow all the instuctions I found on AnandTech. My computer boots up and recognizes all the cores but does not recognize that these chips are Xeons. Instead says they are 2x2.33 GHZ unknown chips. They also do not boot into 64 bit EFI as I was lead to believe they would do after holding the 6 and 4 keys. I am now using OS v10.6.8. Do I have bad chips?
You cannot boot your MP into the 64-bit kernel because it only has a 32-bit EFI ROM. Adding more cores doesn't change that. This is a hardware limitation of your model, and it cannot be changed. Perhaps the reason you thought it would may have been from reading about later MP models that did have the 64-bit EFI ROMs.
As for displaying the chips as unknown doesn't mean anything, really. As long as it works you should be fine. -

Well, why not put your hardware profile for all to see, and whether Apple OEM or upgraded graphic card; whether Apple Hardware Test has any useful information. Even running Memtest on your RAM.
Monitor the internal temps of everything you can (video we are expected to fly blind as there is no useful GPU-Z utility).
If anything, boosting the default fan speeds by 300 rpm won't hurt, and commonly done.
That model had a EFI firmware update to deal with trouble crashing on wake from sleep and inrush current, fwiw even though you aren't sleeping the system.
An SMC Reset (the longer the better) and zap pram/nvram are probably one line of troubleshooting. But I wouldn't wait to repair your drives with Disk Warrior from an emergency backup/clone boot drive as any such freeze can only just lead to more problems than originally. -
Hello everybody. I recently bought a new Mac Pro (2x Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 2,4GHz, running OS X 10.6.8) and just encountered a very strange error at bootup. 1 out of 10 system boots take up much longer and end up in having the desktop with a light blue layer on the screen, being able to move the mouse cursor but not click on any item. I'm using the magic mouse + trackpad + wireless keyboard but have also tried to use a cable mouse with no success. The only way to shutdown the system is to force a power down. Then the computer will boot up fine again several times. Then again, the same error occurs. This is what the kernel log says. Have a look at the bold line: this is where the system hangs much longer at startup (I'm using verbose mode at startup).

Everytime I shutdown the system before the error occurs again on bootup, the shutdown messages contain something like "AppleBluetooth ..." after unmounting all disks - unfortunately I cannot find this message in the logfiles but it's there on shutdown (using verbose mode) just before the system halts. Then, the next boot will lead to the mentioned problems. If I shutdown the system and the message does not appear, everything's going to be fine on bootup.
There must be something wrong with the wireless keyboard + magic trackpad:

Every since I upgraded my early 2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-core Xeon, I've been having some strange issues.
For example, my accounts were set to log out after a certain amount of time of inactivity. By the time the account logged out, my display would have gone to sleep. When I woke my display to login by clicking the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard, my display would only show about a quarter of an inch around the mouse pointer. When I further moved the mouse pointer, the display only drew where the pointer had gone.
Now my accounts simply lock after a period of inactivity. When I unlock the account, the translucent menu bar on the top of the screen shows a different desktop picture than the rest of the screen. When the desktop either changes or I change to another workspace, the menu bar will change also and match the rest of the screen.
Also, I've been having a lot of issues with my DVD program accepting the disks that are loaded into the player. The only way to get the DVD player to accept the DVD is to restart the computer (logging out works sometimes, but not all of the time.)
On a different note, my Mac Pro does not go to sleep by itself and hasn't since the summer of 2009. I've tried everything including turning all network connections off -- nothing has helped. I have to put my Mac Pro to sleep manually. Strangely, my Mac Pro sleeps just fine with Windows 7. Hmmm...
I've performed about three clean installs of Lion hoping that would resolve the issues I'm experiencing. Clean installs didn't help.
I wonder if maybe my video card is getting old and causing some of these issues -- particularly those issues related to the display.

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
Software: OS X Server Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)That sounds like several different issues, and some of them pre-date Lion. Upgrading is unlikely to ever solve pre-existing problems and more likely to further exacerbate them.
One the 'no sleep' problem. Do you mean the display or the hard disk sleep? I'm assuming you've already looked at the settings in Energy saver. It sounds to me like you have something running in the background that is preventing the hard disk from sleeping. Lots of programs can do this, including iTunes, Transmission or anything that causes hard disk activity. If you can't think of anything that is obviously running, have a look in your login items ( > System Preferences > Users & Groups | Login Items) for some background process (little snitch? clamxav? or anything that scans your system). -
Can I use Mac Pro for a server?

I have an older Mac Pro G5 (10.5.8) Desktop. I cannot update it past Leopard. So now I have a newer MacBook Pro. I was wondering if I could utilize my old Mac Pro as some sort of "server"?
It has the origninal smaller drive but I added an additional 1TB SATA drive that is just sitting there doing nothing.
I rip a lot of movies to my MacBook Pro so I am already out of storage on it. I keep moving movie files to my Time Capsule (1TB) in which I have partitioined off 300MB to use for media storage.
I have an Apple TV that I connect to my MacBook Pro but when I'm gone, the family can't use the ATV.
So, all that being said, can I somehow set up my older Mac Pro to use as a "server" and move all my media/photos/videos/songs to? Or should I just copy everything to the 1TB drive on the Mac Pro and just access it through ATV like I do my MBP?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

EhrenYou absolutely could use your old Mac Pro as a server, however you still won't be able to update it passed 10.5.8.
That said, you should be able to store your media on it, and share it to your AppleTV through iTunes, barring any incompatibilites with the older software. I haven't looked into the system requirements for home sharing in a while. You might want to take a quick check and make sure everything is good to go. -

Hello everyone, I wanted to share my tips for getting your aging Mac Pro running better for Mavericks and the FCPX 10.1.
Please note your Mac Pro's specs before doing what did..I am an editor and use the 3 big A's to get my work done. Adobe, Apple, Avid (not so much Avid)
I got a great deal on it for only $1300. I did a bunch of research and decided my upgrade options were best for my machine and the way I use it so your upgrade options my differ slightly. (do your research!!!)
I have 2009 Nehelem Mac Pro 2x 2.66 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. Installed was 6GBs of factory RAM, an upgraded ATI 512 GPU, and 1, 1TB WD Black system drive. (this was a nice upgrade compared to my 4 core Mac Pro)
I was running 10.8 and all my apps were installed and running. I installed 3 more 7200rpm drives to fill the drive bays. Momentus XT's 2TB each.
(I upgraded to Mavericks, as you know it overwirtes the old OS, I wanted the new FCPX...) more on this later.
1- RAM,
I removed the puny 6GBs of RAM it came with and installed 32GBs of 1066 Mhz DDR3 from OWC. I decided 32 would be enough for my needs looking into the App requirments and of course the cost. I noticed a slight difference in some performance. (to my dissapointment) fcpx beachballs!!
However now you will have more RAM to allocate RAM for programs that can read it. After Effects anyone...

2-GPU,
I had a 5770 sitting in the closet, and put that in and bascilly it sucked! I never like the 5770. fcpx beachballs!!
I contacted apple they informed me FCPX is written for GPUs and that a large card (while they didnt suppport it at the time) would be the best upgrade to better performance. So I installed the AMD Sappire 7950 3GB GPU from OWC. This is a monster card! and right away I noticed a huge difference in the perfromace of FCPX and AE! Not only that but the card supports up to 2K I believe... and is a great price... and for you gear heads it looks bad *** and the fan is super quiet!

3- Hardrive,
Ok so now I'm thinking my machine is a beast! I have all this RAM and a huge GPU and the top ESATA drives you can buy, butI was still getting beachballs and FCPX was painfully slow at times..needless to say I felt Apple backing my in a corner to drink more coolaid a get the new small round black can...What to do???
As I mentioned before I did not do a clean install....Most folks dont like going through the pain of 2 days to do a clean install but I knew deep down it would have ot be done. Before I did that I decided to do some research on those new SSD cards everyone is raging about. Remeber your Mac Pro's bus speed is only so big...remember this when doing this last and most important upgrade!!
The market has all kinds of SSD drives for sale and OWC has a PCIe option (too much money for me) they have 3G drives 6G drives and so on. I could be wrong but buying a more expensive 6G card is a waste of money with bus speed of the Nehelem (this my differ with Westmere) I bought an of the self Kingston Hyper X 120GB (get at least 240GB if you can) and the OWC Mac Pro Drive Sled.
This by far was the best upgrade! Before installation please go through the pain of the clean install...For Mavericks you need to create a bootable drive on a USB stick first. You then need to monut SSD in an empty enclosure in order to get it to mount for the OS to be installed

Many of us are not ready to upgrade to the new Mac Pro, and as we all know the legecy Mac Pro was built like a tank with military grade proccessors and endless upgrade options. It wont ever be as fast as that new black can but I know I will be working faster with my trusty Mac!
