Is a Mac worth it?

Very general question but im about to go out and by my first laptop, been a windows user all my life. Switching over to mac, is it actually worth it guys? If you would be nice enough to leave a few reasons why that would be great thanx a bunch!

Macs are definately "worth it"...I have bashed Macs for a long time...then last year, my friend got an iBook and i got to mess with it for a bit...I was stunned at the huge difference that OS X was over previous Mac OS's..everything about that machine was better than my PC's...so...i knew that eventually i would get a Mac when it came time to get a new computer...the last straw with my PC was when i plugged in a MICROSOFT optical mouse into my Dell laptop...and it asked me for drivers...that was it...last week i bought a MacBook and havent looked back...wanna know whats even funnier?...i plugged the MICROSOFT mouse into the MacBook and in 3 seconds....it just worked.

  • Is the "512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage" on the new mac worth the extra cost?  I am comparing with a refurb with better specs (faster CPU, larger hard drive) and from what I undersand the PCIe flash storage is the big differentiator in cost.

hello - i am considering two macbook pros
    NEW - http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=ME294LL/A&step=config#
    REFURB - http://store.apple.com/us/product/G0ML1LL/A/refurbished-macbook-pro-27ghz-quad-c ore-intel-i7-with-retina-display
The refurb actually has a faster processor and a larger hard drive.  From what I understand, the big difference in cost is the new macbook pro contains "512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage" versus the refurb "768GB Flash Storage".
Is the PCIe flash storage really worth the extra cost (and smaller size)?
PS - Also I believe the brand new one has 2 GB graphics memory as opposed to 1 GB graphics memory.  I don't really care about that as much as I won't be doing a lot of video editing or gaming.

Is she wrong - are these actually going to people's homes, being used, then returned and resold?
Some are some are not. Otherwise Apple has a ton of Mac's sitting around that have been returned by customers under their 14 day No Questions Asked return policy.
But they not just Returned and Resold. They go back to Apple, checked out (Tested) any parts that are not up to spec replaced and then repackaged in a plain white box to be sold as refurbs.

  • How much is my mac worth in UK £s?

    Hi
This is probalbly not the right place but I was hoping someone might know how much I might expect to get for this mac on the open market in the UK and what's the least I should accept?. It's been upgraded to 512MB ram.
The Apple iMac G3/400 DV Special Edition (Slot Loading), based on the Kihei architecture, features a 400 MHz
PowerPC 750 (G3) processor, 512k backside level 2 cache, 512MB of RAM, a 13.0 GB Ultra ATA hard drive, a slot
loading 4X DVD-ROM drive, ATI Rage 128 VR 2D/3D (AGP 2X) graphics with 8 MB of VRAM, 2 USB ports, 2
Firewire "400" ports, a VGA video out port for an external monitor, 10/100 ethernet adapter, 56.6K modem and
support for an optional AirPort (802.11b) wireless card and a Harmon-Kardon designed sound system packed into a
translucent "graphite and ice" all-in-one case design with a 15-inch CRT display.
    Thanks
    Pete

Well this company (2ndchancePC) is selling similar models for £69. I think you'd be lucky to get that price for it. Remember original install disks are an important part of the sale.

  • IMac, actually is any mac worth it?  -doesn't i in iMac stand for Internet?

Somewhere after the 10.5.2 updates, things started going south.
I should also include I'm on ATT Yahoo DSL 3/512 with a 2Wire 2701 HGB. Also tested on a Ambit (single line, Natted but not routed) Cable modem (would not acquire DHCP).
using just ethernet, many pages would time out (that is half the graphics would go to question marks) - wireless was slightly better (of course, the router is right next to the iMac).
Since I have active cable as well, Charter - I thought I'd try that route, assuming the 2Wire router is bad & or hostile to Macs - Trying the Ambit would not acquire a DHCP address. I can connect (sporadically) to my Linksys WRT54G (tho it isn't online, just trying to connect to it) - again, wireless on the iMac has usually worked fine - but this gigabit weirdness is buggin me out - no plans to upgrade my gaming and business box to wireless just to talk to the mac.
Local service shop said the network port was bad, and replaced the logic board (along with the DVD Drive that had been failing to mount half the time).
Now if I drop the wireless - (leave ethernet on, MTU 1500) ethernet is still back to the same tricks (gigabit ethernet not negotiating a 100 base connection) - I'm talking about "talking to the routers" - from the ethernet port, down that 3 foot cable (cat5e), to the router. I have timeouts there. This is insane.
What am I missing here? Gigabit ethernet smoothly auto-negotiates from 10/100/1000 on Windows.
Since this just got out of the shop with a certified "stamp of repair approval" I am quite unsure of what to do at this point. (well, I'm becoming more sure, stick with what works!)
    Any help appreciated.

that was the route I took this time when I updated to 10.5.6 - the downloaded combo updater rather than the smaller (half the size) Mac updater...
Pretty sure this is a combination of MTU, 2Wire 2701 oddities and me not knowing how to solve them directly (as well as the ipv6 stuff that's still showing in the logs despite IPv6 being turned off).
Anyhow, I did get it connected under the Ambit finally (took restarting the mac, not expecting that in the "switch" from windows xp)- and that really rocked. Now I'm working on teaching my 2Wire to be a dumb modem, to go with the operator
Actually, I think I'll just cut my losses for the moment and go with cable, once I find a good wireless router to connect the media center and xp box up front.

  • Wide gamut monitor on Mac, worth it?

I have the need for a new monitor to be tethered to a MacBook Pro. Experiencing wide gamut images on screen is something I looked for, but after checking some reviews on recent additions, I have mixed feelings.
Here are some conclusions I came to:
    — From what I have gathered, Apple, creator of ColorSync, still has 8 bit support only both in OS and hardware.
    — Wide gamut monitors can dispaly a more saturated image in the wide gamut Adobe RGB space even with an 8 bit path, but need the 10 bit path to have the corresponding smoother gradient.
    — Wide gamut monitors are difficult to calibrate—some require specific devices for internal hardware calibration, and some will not be able to take profit of some of their interesting features like Uniformity Control when set to a personal calibration mode.
    — If he who can do more can do less, I would take the 10 bit option anyway. But, it seems that sRGB emulation is at the cost of some gradient degradation — how bad, I don't know.
Ok, that's for theory. But in practice, is the wide gamut image on Mac, an enjoyable experience anyway?

Why is there not one single reply on this issue? Has it been resolved? I still hear quite a few people complaining on this issue.
I don't see why this is something that belongs in your code (AS3 colorCorrection). You don't do so with seperate jpg images on a html-page either ;]
Just posted a comment at http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2008/10/get_better_color_online_through_flash_play.html but it's gone now..

  • Wha'ts my G5 Power Mac Worth?

So, I've got a general question: How much could I expect to sell my G5 Power Mac for?
Computer Summary: Its the original G5 desktop, and I got it from the first run when they were first being produced so its 8 years old.  I replaced the disk drive and the HD.  Its got a new 250 GB HDD (hitachi), and otherwise is running fine.  It doesn't have the intel chip.  The original monitor was destroyed a few years back by accident when I was moving.  Oh, and I've got the wi-fi antenna for it as well.
    Thoughts?

Shipping costs will be prohibitively expensive so sell it on Craigslist, or give it to someone with children too small to use Daddy's iMac. They can play games like Nanosaur, Bugdom, Ottomatic, Pac-Man...
The G5 is fine for Internet use, iTunes, email... in other words just about everything people do with a new $1500 iMac anyway
You can probably get at least $150. I sold a G3 iMac last year for $100.

  • Whats  my Mac worth when sick ?

I have a DP 1.25Ghz PowerMac, 1.5 GB of Apple certified/purchased Samsung RAM , dual 80GB Seagate Barracuda drives. All original carton , manuals etc.
But I think my logic board is going out , if I were to cut my losses. What would it be worth on the net or in general ?

Spencer, just curious, what makes you think the logic board is going bad? I'm just curious because I have the same machine and it has always been kinda crash-prone... and my many troubleshooting attempts have never made it nearly as stable as other OSX machines I've used...
Does it sometimes crash/freeze for no apparent reason?

  • "Clean My Mac" Worth Having?

I'm a new Macbook Pro owner and I'd like to keep it running smoothly. I ran across this
    www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/cleanmymac.html
in the downloads section of the site.
Is it something I should use? Is there a better alternative?
Forgive me but im just not that savvy...yet

CleanMyMac removes unwanted language files (check MonoLingual for similar free function)
It uninstalls all bits of a removed application (check out the AppTrap Preference Panel for similar free function)
It strips out the Universal Binary code that's not needed with pure Intel Apps
It can remove a bit of unwanted stuff from your drive but it's not worth the money, there's free things that can do a lot of what it does if you want to bother (but it's not really worth the effort generally)
For smooth running I'd look at Utilities like MainMenu to help you perform the chron (housekeeping) tasks and for deleting temp files, caches, archived logs etc.

  • How much my Mac is worth after one year

I am interested how to calculate how much is my Mac worth after one year. If someone can help I would appreciate.

If you sell it yourself, figure about 2/3's of the original purchase price, if in excellent condition, with box, DVD's & all accessories...perhaps a little more with the right buyer...less if you're missing all that stuff.

  • Windows for mac? worth it?

Hi, not too clued up on adding stuff to my mac, as im not too techy.
Is adding windows to mac worth it, for running certain programs and games etc etc?
If so, what is the cheapest and most effective way of doing this?
or is it best to keep my mac and buy a separate pc?

Do you already have boot camp?
If not you may need to upgrade to Leopard its no longer available separately
If you don't want to upgrade then you will need parallels deskop or WMware fusion to boot in to windows.
Then you will need a copy of XP2 to install (try ebay)

  • Can't sync address book with .Mac

Hi. I'm posting a question for the first time. I am currently a trial user of .Mac. I was seriously considering becoming a full member until I ran into problems syncing my contacts. My question is very simple. Is .Mac worth the effort? I've wasted many hours so far (intermediate level user) trying to get the addresses to sync and nothing works. I've also seen that many people seem to be in the same boat. What's the consensus out there? Do the other perks (iDisk, for example) make up for Address Book setbacks and headaches?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Torero,
I have found it invaluable, but then, I'm using the iDisk feature as a holding place for client files. For instance, I have a client who lives outside of town in the "country" and has only a dial-up connection to the internet. For her convenience, I put files there for her to retrieve at night, so she can go to bed while they download! Or, a client needs to have a printer receive files and can give them my .mac address to retrieve the files. This is most useful when the client isn't too web-savvy, as this way the printer gets all of the right files. Or my newsletter clients post photos there for me to get so it takes them less time to upload them that way...
I've not tried to sync to my .mac account but probably will soon, though, and I, too, read these lists first!
Good luck, but in short, I've found my subscription to .mac to have been very worthwhile for my purposes.

  • Convince me to get a MB Pro

Hi! First off, English is not my first language. I may misuse some technical terms.
I'm a long-term Windows user - having used all OS since Win 95 - but lately, things have been going downhill. (Sounds more fatal than it really is, I suppose.)
I own 2 Windows 7 computers, one laptop and one desktop. The laptop I have used for school, word documents and web surfing, and the desktop one has mostly been for gaming.
Recently, I upgraded the desktop from Win XP to Win 7, after my friend told me 7 was much smoother and less buggy than XP. After installing, problems immediately arose. I was missing drivers, software malfunctioned as some website automatically downloaded a 32-bit program on the 64-bit system, and USB ports would stop working as something kept switching off their power supply. I have since reinstalled Win7 twice, having to wipe and merge partitions and save all my precious files to USB memories. Just now, I needed to view a PDF file online. Adobe Reader failed to install, and the OS got slow and buggy. I rebooted the comp and now it won't start. I've asked around at support forums, and it seems like I have a driver error.
See, this is the problem and why I don't get along with PCs: I don't get the whole thing with "drivers". I think that, every time I install (or re-install) an OS on my computer, it should immediately and automatically find whatever drivers it needs to function correctly, sort them in a simple list and then keep them updated indefinitely. Computers should just work. I have studies and assignments to think about, I don't want to be my computer's personal doctor. I am so sick of Windows and all its errors, lag, wipes, reboots and tweaks. I want something stable, smooth, reliable and easy to use.
This is why I consider getting a Mac. My laptop works at the moment, but it too has been a roller-coaster ride to use lately. It's only 2 years old, and I recently reinstalled the OS and had all the dust cleaned out, but it still freezes up, malfunctions and feels "worn". I don't want to spend time keeping my technology healthy. It should just work.
Getting a MacBook, I would have to pay it off little by little with my student loan, but it's nothing I can't manage. My friend has a MacBook and has vowed never to buy a PC again.
What I would like to know from you Mac users is, how simple is it really? Do fans oversell it, or is it as great as supposed? I come on here and find that people have problems with hard- and software on the MacBook too, but how common is it compared to PCs?
My friend advised me to get an iPhone after I finally managed to return my broken Xperia, and it was like a whole different world from the Android. My iPhone is the best purchase I have ever made. It just works, never had any problems with it so far. Is this how getting a Mac feels after using PC for over 10 years? Like I said, I'm so tired of errors, lag and redundant features which do more harm than good. Is a Mac worth the price tag? I would very much like to hear from personal experiences.
    Thanks for reading.

It seems you want the answer to questions that would be best addressed by visiting an Apple Store and trying out the hardware first-hand. If you're wondering what a Mac feels life after ten years with a Windows machine, that's the best way to find out. Demo units have most of the most popular, current software installed, so you'll have a chance to compare ease of use and speed.
About "drivers." When you get your unit, Apple will search online for you and automatically prepare your system with most of the updates and drivers you'll need. Individual applications may require updates, and you'll see a box on-screen asking you if you want to update.
Heat is the enemy of any computer, and Macs are no exception. Keep an eye on the temperature. Some Macs can be susceptible to hardware issues if a computer is hot for long periods of time. Don't use your computer on your lap - it turns it into an oven. Minimize extended gaming.

  • Starting my PowerMac G3(beige)

Hi I'm completely new to Apple Macs, have always used PCs. Someone has just given me a PowerMac G3, just the processor. The label on the back of the box reads 266MHz 512K cache. I've got my PC monitor plugged into the box and the display is working fine. I am trying to get the machine to work. The display shows a symbol for a floppy with a question mark slowly flashing on it. I assumed this meant that there was no operating system on the hard drive. So I've bought a Mac OS8 disk and tried to install However I get the following message
'This startup disk will not work on this Macintosh model Use the latest installer to update this disk for this model'
Is there someone who can advise what I should do to get an OS on the machine? I would be very grateful for any advice. Thanks

Directly above the battery is the sound or sound & Video card. The backpanel is firmly attached on only one side, so this card gets wiggled whenever any pressure is exerted on the card cage, and if it has danced partway out of the slot, your Mac will not boot.
If the Mac has been stored for a while, it is possible that there is some corrosion on the connectors and cables. A good move for a new-to-you computer is to unplug and re-plug any removeable connectors.
The initial chime is generated in software after your Mac has executed millions of instructions and booting is likely. It may be that the previous owner erased the Hard drive and did not put anything back on it. That would certainly be unkind.
I hear you asking, "Is this Mac worth pursuing?". In my opinion, yes it is, to a point. This Mac can be coaxed to run Mac OS 8.5 or 9.any, and can run Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.4 if you want to badly enough. It does not have enough capability to play web movies without being jerky, but if you push it, you can run the latest Browsers and have a reasonable web experience otherwise.
Is it a Ferarri? No. More like a good solid old Pickup truck. Models two generations older are total dogs on the Internet, because they have no graphics acceleration. You can't give those older Macs away.
You may be able to find a used Mac OS 8 "Full Retail" disc of a later version, a disc specific to the G3, or a "Full Retail" disc of OS 9 (white with big gold "9". Do not bother with gray or orange discs from a different Mac, they will not have all the stuff you need to make yours go.

  • Windows Laptop that will run Photoshop?

I am looking for a new laptop which is easy to carry around but yet can still work the latest model of Photoshop. Can I get a decent Windows laptop which can run Photoshop easily or is a Mac worth the heavy price tag? I live in the UK, so please tell me the prices in £ please.

  • Simple backup of TC data to an external HD

    Hello --
I'm trying to do a straight backup of my 2TB Time Capsule (with three Macs' worth of Time Machine data) to my external 2TB hard drive.  I've done this once before but I sure can't figure out how I did it.  I only use my HD as an offsite TC backup, not as a regular appendage to my TM setup.
    Thanks much for your help!
    -s

The Archive function in AirPort Utility will make a complete copy of the contents of the Time Capsule drive to an attached USB hard drive.....so that might be what you were thinking of.
Otherwise, you can use a third party commerical application like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the contents of the Time Capsule drive to a USB drive attached to the Time Capsule.
