Is a Macbook Pro worth the money?

Hi, I am going to get a MBP by the end of this year and I want 1 TB but I see for the retina display models there is no option... I have an iMac and would be interested in a Macbook Pro

Correct, the retina display models do not have a HD they have flash storage. Read the specifications http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/
As to whether or not the Macbook pro is worth the money, I guess only you can decide. I like mine.

  • Is Quicktime Pro worth the money?

Like my subject says, I am considering purchasing the serial to upgrade to Quicktime Pro 7 and just wondering if it is actually worth the money or if the normal Quicktime is good enough?
    thanks

The Pro upgrade allows you to create content (start to finish) using QuickTime.
Things like image sequence imports (think claymation), adding images and audio to video, converting file formats (iPod come to mind) and dozens of other uses.
Nearly all of my "movies" are made using QuickTIme Pro and I've been a user (and buyer since version 3 was the first time they charged extra for it) for many years.
Take a few minutes trying some of my video links:

  • Is MacBook Pro worth the price difference vs. MacBook?

    Friends,
Is MBP a good bang for the buck, vs MacBook, for the Logic hobbiest?
I am a student, ready to buy a new computer and all new software to replace my eMac 1.25GHz (that runs Logic Pro 7 and Adobe Creative Suite 1). I plan to use Logic Pro 8 for MIDI and software instruments, with occasional recording of DJ mix sets.
After academic discount, MacBook Pro starts at $750 more than MacBook, but when upgraded to the same RAM, HDD, and processor, the MBP costs $400 more than the MB. I am aware of all technical differences between the two systems, even expecting a serious update to MBP soon.
Would you post your opinions, please?
    Thank you.

Hmm I say go for the Macbook and save yourself a bunch of cash!
Like you have found out, buying a Macbook and upgrading it yourself (HDD and RAM) is far far far cheaper than either buying it from Apple or going with the Macbook Pro.
I'd suggest literally buying the base spec in terms of RAM and HDD, and replacing these yourself with a bigger HDD and more RAM. Neither will void your warranty as they are user replaceable and Apple provide instructions on how to change them on their website.
You could drop 2GB (they might even support 3 or 4 now) of RAM into a MB for less than $40 and a fast 300GB HDD isnt gonna cost you much more than $175-200. Once those are in, the difference in spec between your upgraded MB and the MBP doesnt seem so great, whereas the price is still hugely different!
The only time I would suggest going for the MBP is for graphics. Even then I think they are a little overpriced. I have the same NVidia card that was shipping in the MBP's in my iMac and I work in 3D graphics...to be honest, the difference in graphical performance between my MB (same spec as my iMac without graphics driver) and iMac is minimal.
The only other decider would be how many FireWire/USB ports you would use as the MBP has more.
I've considered upgrading to a MBP myself, but the specs just arent attractive enough at the moment and Im waiting for an update which will hopefully come soon, but this would be purely for my graphics work. For my Logic use, the MB handles everything I want to do no problem at all.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is the higher-end 13" Macbook Pro worth the extra $300?

I know that it has a faster processor and larger hard drive, but does it justify the extra $300?

Well, if you are facile with some tools you could install a bigger drive yourself. You can install more RAM on your own without the need for tools. But you cannot replace the CPU and GPU if you need more processing power in the future. If that's a concern then it's better to get it now because you cannot add it later.
For what you describe you could easily get by with a much less powerful computer. My personal decision was the 2.4 GHz model, dual-core i5, 500 GB hard drive and 8GBs of RAM. I then got a DataDoubler and an SSD from OWC that replaced the optical drive. Total cost was under $1,600.00. I bought the computer from an authorized Apple reseller which came with the 8 GBs of RAM, 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive, MiniDisplay Port to HDMI adaptor, and MiniDisplay Port to DVI adaptor. Total was $1,352.00 including shipping (no sales tax.) DataDoubler is $75.00 and the 60 GB SSD was $150.00.
The reseller is ExperCom.com if you're interested.

  • Is Macbook Pro 15-inch worth the money?

Is the entry level Macbook Pro 15 inch with specs at the time of this writing worth the money ? I am a student who does the usual school stuff, web surfing, and quite heavy gaming(Like FIFA).I am considering to purchase a Macbook as I was enticed by its design and Mac OS Lion's smooth, fun and enjoyable user interface. Having taken a number of trips to Apple Stores, I actually want to buy the 15" Pro(13" can't run FIFA and 17" is too heavy)) However, one can never know if I he or she does not actually try it out. So, I want to ask all users who use Macbook Pro 15, are Mac OS X and design things that are worth extra money for?

They are to me.  Whether they are or not to you, no one but you can say.
Honestly, the question you have asked is impossible for anyone to answer.  For those responding who own a MBP, especially people like myslef who have been buying and using Apple laptops since before the iBook, the answer will be yes, they are worth it to us (why else would we keep buying Apple laptops?).
It's purely a personal decision as only you can decide what is "worth it" to you.
I primarily buy Apple hardware because I prefer the OS X operating system over the alternatives (Windows or Linux, while OS X gives me the perfect blend of CLI UNIX and a GUI), and I have been very satisfied with their hardware as well.

Im looking for a MacBook that is worth the money and decent for gaming and editing, any suggestions?
    There all so AWESOME!

Then you are best to get a Macbook Pro. Your real aim should be the graphics card.
You won't be doing really good gaming on a discrete graphics card sharing RAM.
Depending of coarse what games you play.
eg. card games / COD games.

if you're not in a big rush - why not hold off until Adobe and Microsoft releases an update to support the Retina Screen.
Don't get me wrong - the Macbook Retina is a good and videos look great - but when it comes to Photoshop, it's a little blurry and the fonts in Excel and Word is pretty blurry too.....I own one....
In any event, if it's something you can live with - then by all means - go for it.....
Otherwise - get the non Retina Macbook Pro - it's cheaper, and it's user upgradeable in both RAM and Hard Drive.
    Good luck.

  • Is the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS worth the money for Final Cut Express?

    Hi,
I'm considering a new iMac 24, but not sure if the speedier on is worth the money.
Currently I use a MacBook Pro 2.2 for Final Cut Express with a 23" cinema (mostly DV, some HD) and that works okay, but won't play back in real time when I composit video.
Anybody know if the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS will help in that area?
    Thanks,
    KC

The speedier video card is great for 3D stuff, but it won't matter a wink for Final Cut Express, which barely makes use of the video card.
Keep in mind that Final Cut is using the CPU, not video card, to perform the editing, decoding, and encoding of the video. The only time the video card comes into play is during playback of the video, and any of the video options available for iMacs will handle that just fine.
When you composite video, the hard-disk throughput will start to come into play. The dinky 5400 RPM disk in your laptop will adversely affect the performance of that.

  • IPad or Mac? which is better worth the money?

iPad or Mac? which one is better worth the money, if mac, which is the cheapest but still gives you all the good apps and qualities? I would use it alot, and i already have an iouch so would the ipad be worth it? im a teenager so i would use these things alot, and i need some features to help with school and just having fun!!

iPad is not a substitute for a Mac. It's more like a companion to a Mac.
In desktops, Mac mini should be sufficient and is the only comparable Mac in terms of price, but you need to add a monitor, keyboard.
In laptops, consider the MacBook Air for its portability, and the MacBook Pro for more options in terms of processing and screen size.
Visit an Apple Store (the physical kind). The staff is very helpful and will assist ou in making a decision.

  • I've tried the new iWork and feel cheated. I'm gonna stick with my old '09 version. It appears to have lost utility, and is now easily surpassed by Word 07. Is a new version that's worth the money and hype coming?

I've tried the new iWork (on a friend's new MacBook Pro) and feel very disappointed. I'm gonna stick with my old '09 version. It appears to have lost utility, and is now easily surpassed by Word 07. Dear Apple, from a veteran user: In your rush to market, you have dropped the basket on this one! Is a new version that's worth the money and hype coming?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
A lot of users have complained about the lack of features of the new iWork version. However, I'm sure Apple will add features with more updates in the future, like with Final Cut Pro X. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6049?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Until then, you can carry on using iWork '09, or try Microsoft Office 2011 or even LibreOffice, which is free and open-source

  • How to update a MacBook Pro to the latest copy of Snow Leapard

I was wondering how do you update a MacBook Pro to the latest Snow Leopard? I have the software version I want and I held down c while I restarted it and got to the installer but it told me I needed a backup to install it. Is this true because I don't have a backup and I'm not sure how to get one with out spending a lot of money to go to apple or get a time machine. Can some one tell me how to update?
    Thanks

I think you can probably just bypass that message, but if you don't have a backup, sooner is a better time to make one than later. Get an external hard drive at least as large as your internal drive (a FireWire 800 drive is best, but USB is considerably cheaper), and use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable clone of your internal drive before you upgrade the OS. Then if things should go haywire during the upgrade, you'll be able to start up from the clone and clone it back onto the internal drive.
Using your computer without a backup of all your data is like driving an uninsured motor vehicle: you should never even think about it.

  • How to buy a US MacBook Pro in the UK

I'd like to know if it's possible to purchase a US MacBook Pro in the UK.
If so, how? Where? How much would it cost?
By US MBP I mean one fitted with the US keyboard and the like.

    that stinks about the localization
though you're both right - the customs in the UK are terrible... its money for nothing for them, a lot of it
how do i avoid it being taxed legally? i'm importing it for myself - why would i have to pay?
if i remove or destroy the original packaging - am i exempt?
what if the friend uses the same two apple boxes but writes that theres no computer in there... or what?

  • Is the Mac Book Pro worth the purchase?

    Hey there,
I have a G4 Titanium laptop, and the LCD is starting to fritz. I'm going to get it repaired, but I'm also considering just chucking it and buying a new machine. What do you recommend?
Is the Mac Book Pro worth the purchase?
I just went and looked at the 15" mac book pro at CompUsa, and the machine was so hot around the trackpad area I was shocked. That was a bit of a turnoff for me.
Should I just get the smaller Mac Book? (altho, I hate the shiny screen.)
Is it best to just wait until January and hope for some better machines??
    Help!!!
    Thanks!

I agree with Brody. Rumor sites have been proven wrong, very wrong in teh past, often. What hapepned to that ipod video that was supsoed ot be otu on teh 30th aniversary, abd before that at soemthign else, then at wwdc? OH yea, it didnt show up, at all
Also as for his 'price comparison' thing it is the same with all machines. The Pro has better video (much better.. though could be better), a better display amonth other small features. It is roughly 800$ more. Now, compare a dell nspiron E1705 - code du0 2.0ghz, 100gb, 1gb, integrated intel graphic chipset, 17" priced at $1499 to a XPS M1710 - codeduo 2,.0ghz, 1gb, 100gb, 17uxga+ display and 512 7900gtx at $2915. Non-integrated graphics, and a good chipset though the 7900gtx does destroy the punny junky x1600 (so take off say 400$ to be more fair) the price diffrence is roughly the same when teh better display si thrown in as to apples 12 vs 15 with higher res and better viewing angle. A decent video chipset for laptops are way more then a regular video card when changing it, displays also don't come cheap.
If you need the power of the mbp for say motion or more professional use on the road (try using a 12 for professional graphic dev or other fields it is more then annoying... i used a ibook prior ot my pb and couldnt do it, i returned it wiht in 2 weeks), powering a better diaplay and whatbe it else i'd suggest getting one. if you do not need it and can live with teh 12" get the macbook.
In the end it is yoru choice, but as we've said don't go by rumors of if or when better cpu will come out as technology advances rapidly unfortunatly, espcilly when there is no officialo word as to if they will go to it.
best of luck on yoru choice!

Is the retina display for the new mac book pro worth the extra cost? I'm buying a new mac book pro but not sure about the retina display.

There is a US$10 adapter from old power adapter to new MacBook Pro.
    MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter
The MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter allows you to use the MagSafe connector on your LED Cinema Display, Thunderbolt Display, or MagSafe Power Adapter to charge your MagSafe 2-equipped Mac computer.
For battery life, check the latest Software Update for the fix for most problems.

  • Is the hard drive better in the MacBook Pro that the Air version?

Is the hard drive better in the MacBook Pro that the Air version? What are the negatives?

That is a question only Apple can answer and the purchaser must decide if the price is worth it.  Apples pricing for upgrades in the past has often been such that third party RAM and HHDs/SSDs were less expensive.  However those options are no longer available with the retina MBPs.
    Ciao.
