Is a MacBook sufficient for running XP?
Not sure if running XP requires emulation or lots of resources? How well does a MacBook run XP running either Parallels or Bootcamp?

Dibbler mentioned the vulnerability to viruses if you have XP on a MB. Probably a dumb question but, am I safe in assuming that I can block Internet access from my XP partition? I need XP for one program only (Systran Chinese-English translation program) I would love to avoid installing XP at all, but I cannot find an alternate English-Chinese translation program that works as well as Systran (and they have no plans for a Mac version). I plan on installing XP, never updating it or using for anything else (why on earth would I?) except to run Systran.
If anyone knows of a English-Chinese translation program that runs on a Mac, please let me know. I can translate using Systran's Systranet web site but it is more cumbersome and I need web access, which I do not always have when using the Engish-Chinese program on my old PC.

I've got a MacBook Pro 15' running 10.6.6. I want to use an external monitor for my graphic design work using Adobe software and thought I'd try an HD TV. I ran a Mini Display to HDMI lead to the TV but the picture quality was disappointing. I also tried a Mini Display to VGA lead and that wasn't much better. I tried all variations of resolutions in System prefs - Displays but nothing helped. Am I getting something wrong? Thanks all.
In addition to pixel density, you are up against the translation driver card in the TV.
If you read the fine print of computer-resolution-capability in the TV user guide, you will see a chart as tall as the manual page. At the top is the smallest resolution capable, at the bottom is the full use of the 1080p in the TV.
Mac falls into the top 25% of the page, maxing out at 1366x768 often. This is because the TV control card is expected to do too much of the work, but is not designed for computer-monitor processing.
I looked at the resolution charts on 2 TVs before deciding to buy a 1080p LCD monitor that has a TV interface/connector. Computer monitor first, TV second. But the thing is only 27 in. Good thing TV is not as important to me as it is to others. -

Macbook pro 13inch running slow and losing connection (had it for only a year)
Will someone please help me.. I've only had my mac book pro for a year only and few months ago I started experiencing that my macbook has been running slow lately.. I still have alot of memory in it because I only use it for browsing the net and saving some pictures on it and some videos and it. I have another laptop with me(Toshiba) and it works perfectly fine.. Honestly, I didn't switch to apple to get this kind of issues! Will someone help me please.. I seriously don't want to pay $50 just for them to trouble shoot it.. & I'm not the only one experiencing this problem... Alot of people I know that uses macbook are experiencing the same issues. My MacBook Pro is running SUPER slow. When I start up my computer it takes forever to load up, when I play World of Warcraft it is painfully slow with logging in etc. Everything about starting a program takes forever to load up and then once you are in the program everything is super slow. My husband's macbook pro is a 17 inch 2009 and works WAY better and faster then mine. Also, i don't know if this is a related problem, but the power drains VERY quickly. For example, If I have a MS OFFICE program on I could be at 100% hooked up to my power and then if I go off of my battery, the battery life will only last about 30 to 45 minutes MAX.

1) Make sure you have enough Free Hard Drive space for your Mac to Perform as expected...
Rule of thumb is about 15 to 20 GB
2) And adding more RAM is always a prudent move... (4GB of RAM is a minimum for Mavericks... 8GB at least would be better.)

My MacBook Air is running out of storage. Will an external hard drive work for me?
Good afternoon, Apple support forums! I recently made a BootCamp partition, and now my MacBook Air is running out of storage (about 13 GB left), and I realize that I cannot expand the storage on my Macbook Air without some DIY technical work. I looked into alternatives and came onto external hard drives (I'm looking at the LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 USB 3.0 Mobile Hard Drive - 2 TB, but this question is for external hard drives in general). I was wondering, just in case, if I could use it not for backup (as I already have an Apple AirPort Time Capsule) but as added on storage for my Mac. Also, would I have to keep the external hard drive plugged into my Mac 24/7 to have access to the files stored on it? Thanks in advance for any help!!

I Just bought a new MacBook Pro, running Lion, version 10.7.2. I am looking to run some windows applications on my mac, including AutoCAD, etc. I would ideally like to install bootcamp on my MacBook, but from what i understand, Lion is only compatible with Windows 7... I have Windows XP and VMWARE Fusion that I had run on my previous MacBook, however, I am unable to install VMWARE Fusion on my new MacBook (Lion). Any recommendations for running higher-profile windows apps on a mac without having to purchase Windows7 or a new version of VMWARE? Thanks
Newer computer = newer drivers and apps. You can only run Windows 7 using Boot Camp Assistant with the newer computers. Or, you can download and install Parallels or Fusion (the most current versions work in Lion). If using Parallels or Fusion you can install XP, Vista, Windows 7, etc.
Or, you could try the free VirtualBox. -
What internals are great for running Avid MC 6.5 on my 2012 Macbook 15" Non-Retina?
I run Avid MC 6.5 everyday, Premiere 6, and Final Cut X sometimes. I need help on upgrading my Macbook Pro for great performances but I do not know how to build proper internals and I NEED YOUR HELP. My specs are 2.3 GHz Quad Core i7. Memory is 4gb 1600 MHz DDR3... Running the latest OS X 10.8.3

I plan on buying a Macbook. I really want the Macbook Air but people at Apple tell me I need the Macbook Pro to run Ps properly. I plan on renting Ps monthly through Adobe Creative Cloud so Im not sure if this is the same and needs the same space as buying it and installing.

L.The top end MacBook Pro 15" (17" high res/anti-glare for full 1080 HD screen) for mobile video needs with some restrictions and hinderances, you will need the Build to Order 7,200 RPM drive for sure as you need space and speed.
You can have 8GB of RAM from Apple or place 16GB in yourself for a lot less than Apple charges for 8GB. However you need to be handy with tiny screws, or have a local specialist do the 16GB for you.
Your probally better off with a MacPro than a MacBook Pro.
The MacPro is more powerful, and easier to get inside and do things, lasts longer, more ports, more drives, more storage for video, fast external RAID 5 setups etc.
So if you can get into a MacPro, that would be a better option for video. -
Year-old MacBook adequate for PhotoShop?
My friend is a bit of a computer klutz and has a MacBook bought over a year ago. He was ready to buy an expensive Mac Pro desktop machine today for Photoshop work but I told him his MacBook would probably be powerful enough, and if not, an iMac would be good. BTW his MacBook is the higher-end black version with 1 GB ram, 120 GB HD, and a single processor chip (2 Ghz?) - the faster Core 2 Duo version came out about a month after he bought.
He has a couple of nice Canon digital SLR cameras and shoots lots of images on vacations and wants to do minor PhotoShop touchups from RAW files and print them. He also has Aperture, a 22" Samsung widescreen LCD monitor, a 1 TB USB/Firewire external hard drive, an expensive new large-format Epson printer, and a USB stylus pad.
So what version of Photoshop would be good, and is this MacBook capable? Or would iPhoto be sufficient for this? I think all he might need is a USB hub to increase USB port capacity for the extra devices, but actually the 2 ports on the MacBook might be enough. We have tested the Samsung monitor (226BW) and it works fine with the MacBook on the DVI cable. I think he would be able to use the external HD for archival storage of his images, and take the MacBook with him on vacations for dumping the RAW images from the camera.
Also, what is a good book or online site to get him up to speed on Mac? He knows how to do a few basic Mac things. This is unfortunately a common problem I think - lots of people who were into film photography are having a hard time making the transition to digital cameras, computers, and software.
I don't have a Mac (will get one soon), so I can't properly advise him yet.

The "Core Duo" model MacBook still has two processors inside, that's the "duo" part of the name. If it only had one, it would be a "Core Solo". (There were never any "Core Solo" MacBooks, but there were some Mac minis.) The "2" in the "Core 2 Duo" just means it's the second version of the "Core Duo" processor.

iPhoto is NOT an image editing application. Although it does have a very limited set of adjustments you can make, it's not a replacement for PhotoShop. In fact, if your friend does have Aperture, he doesn't need iPhoto. Aperture is the "pro" replacement for iPhoto.
I would strongly suggest upgrading to 2GB of RAM and using PhotoShop CS3. It should run fine, that's what I have on mine. I use it, mostly, to touch-up pictures from my iPhoto, so I'm no PhotoShop power user. But, I do open it almost every day.

Which Macbook Pro for Video Editing
I'd like to buy a macbook pro for video editing on the go and with all the available features, I can't tell which is best.
I use final cut pro 7 and all footage is HD.
RAM?
7200rpm vs. 5400 ?
DUAL CORE vs. QUAD
INTEL GRAPHICS?
RETINA?
It's all very confusing, especially since I haven't looked into buying another mac since I purchased an iMac in '07 (which still rocks).- Get either a 7200 or SSD internal drive
*You'll need an external hard drive that runs at least 7200rpm for your media (scratch disk)
- If you can affor it, go with a Quad Core
- For graphics, I believe all the new MacBook Pros come with Intel HD Graphics 4000
- As for CPU speed and RAM, they really go hand in hand with video editing.
- CPU speed doesn't help if you do not have sufficient RAM cover all of needed video/audio/effect editing and rendering processes.
- Slower CPU with more RAM means that procesess get covered by the additonal RAM, but will take longer to render and preview during editing.
*So when choosing CPU and RAM, do not sacrifice one for the other.
You can always upgrade RAM later if you can't afford it now.
- Retina? Doesn't make much of a difference for you. You're not editing 4k video so chose what you like better, or can afford.
