Is a Macbook up to running FCP?

Hi all. I know FCP is a 'heavy' program and in an ideal world you would not want to mess about trying to use FCP on a Macbook (the specs are as listed for my machine), however my employers have recently requested that I be able to capture clips off a Sony 1080i arrange them into an order, compress as MPEG2 and FTP the resulting file from a Macbook.
We received instruction on a chunky MacPro in the office and all worked well, however out in the field when I tried the same on my Macbook it fails to capture - as soon as I click to capture a clip from the camera an error message appears that from memory says something like 'warning, data was lost from the last capture attempt' , and no video is captured. Any ideas why?
A friend told me one possible reason: " NEVER EVER use the drive that your OS is on to capture video. ALWAYS use an external drive. Its a total NO NO. Youll ruin your main drive. No one does it. Get an external. The system cannot access the video and run the OS as well this is true if both Macs and Pee Cee;'s''
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to do what I've been asked with a Macbook, I have access to a Lacie Rugged 7200 RPM drive but would have to use the USB port from my Macbook to connect to it as the firewire 400 port would be being used by the Sony camera.
Many thanks
Simon

An HDV camera records — surprise surprise — HDV. There are a number of different video formats out there, some exclusively for professional use and some that you might run into doing lower-end work.
HDV is arguably the lowest-end high-definition format. HDV cameras are generally cheaper (and of correspondingly lower quality) than most other cameras, with a few notable exceptions.
The trade-off HDV makes is that it really compresses the ever-lovin' heck out of the footage, storing it in very few bytes per second of data. But because the compression is so intense, it requires more processing to turn it back into video again when you play it back. That's why you'll hear people around here talk about shooting HDV but converting it to another format for editing. DVCPRO HD is a popular editing format, and ProRes 422's gaining.
That's one of the reasons why encoding your HDV footage on a MacBook will be an unsatisfying experience. It takes a lot of math to go from heavily compressed HDV footage to heavily compressed MPEG-2 footage, with a scaling operation in the middle. A lot of math means either a lot of CPUs or a long time.
Life's full of trade-offs.

  • Difference between running FCP on PB or macbook?

I am in between buying refurb PB 12 for 1,200 or a 1.83 macbook for 2,500, will the macbook be substantially superior to the 12 PB in running FCP or FCP HD?
This will be my first mac as well as my first expereince with editing but I am really into it and I don't think this will be a phase, In fact I am taking two video making classes and a photoshop class.
I am also concerned about buying technology that seems to be on its way out, but the price differeance is to big to disregard, i could always buy a 12 Pb and then sell it later and then buy a macbook. Please help me decide my macbook ships in two days and I would have to cancel it by then.

First of all, I will say that the idea of editing on a 12" screen sounds like torture to me. Screen real estate is crucial - you can NEVER have enough. So for that reason alone, I'd (personally) never even consider a 12".
Secondly, no one is going to be able to speak much about the performance of FCP on a MacBook Pro because FCP will not run on it at all right now. We'll know more in March: "...The current version of Final Cut Studio is not supported on Intel-based Mac computers with Rosetta. A Universal version of Final Cut Studio will be available before the end of March 2006..."
Finally, you're sort of in a rock & a hard place I think. The 12" is virtually dead technology. But the MacBook Pro, being so brand new, could have it's own set of issues, like many "Revision 'A" computers do.
Sorry that I may not have helped out much here. I will say though, if it were me, I'd probably go MacBook Pro. (If I were choosing between these items you've stated....)

  • Running FCP 5.0.4 on Intel MacBook Pro??

I'm working with a partner across the continent on an HDV project. He is working on a G5 with FCP 5.0.4. I'm on Intel machines here.
We are working with identical (media) drives. He sends me his work project. When I run it on my Intel system it looks like the image is step-framming ... it is not giving me a smooth playback.
Is this a function of running FCP 5.0.4 on an Intel system?
Or could it possibly be something else I am missing?
Any help would be much appreciated,
    Ben

Is this a function of running FCP 5.0.4 on an Intel system?
Probably. FCP 5.0.4 isn't Intel native, so you're running it under Rosetta, which slows it down considerably.
You needed the crossgrade to 5.1 to get an Intel native version. However, the crossgrade isn't available anymore, so you'll have to upgrade to FCP 6 to run properly on Intel.
However, if you're running version 6 and your partner is on version 5.x.x, you will be able to read his projects, but he won't be able to read yours. XML 2 can be used to transfer the projects between the different versions of the program.

  • How to run FCP on an iBook without Quartz Extreme?

Hi, I would like to be able to run FCP 5 on my existing iBook G4 (1.2GHz with 512MB RAM). Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio should run fine but I believe FCP will not launch without a Quartz Extreme graphics adapter (and I don't have the cash to upgrade to a MacBook Pro!) I have heard there is a hack available to allow FCP 5 to run on lower-spec graphics chips... anyone know where I could find this hack? Are there any associated issues?
    Cheers,
    Tom

Of the two, target mode would be far more efficient (and less risky -- in terms of software data corruption). I have in the past installed OS X on a machine with a poor DVD drive, so iLife should be no problem.

  • MacBook Pro Lag, running slow and to much time to start.

    Hi
Need some help, my MacBook Pro is running slow it takes like 10 - 13 minutes to start, most of the times when I'm going to type something, it doesn't matter which app do I use (Facebook, messages, search on google, it get stuck once in a while and the beach ball appears for a few seconds and then works again, or when I navigate between apps and tried to click on something it takes a while and beach ball comes up I just  reinstalled OS X Yosemite again and ran CleanMyMAc and got almost 2 gb deleted, but still the same problem, I use this computer for work on java apps. I ran the EtreCheck and this is the result. Any help on how to kill spotlight? or any suggestions??

  • White Macbook (mid 2006) Runs loud and very hot,  battery not charging

I know my Macbook is getting a bit old now, but I don't think the way it is running is very normal.
The battery will say that it is fully charged, but it will only last about half an hour when disconnected from the charger. The light on the charger will not come on either, or it will blink when i attach it, then stay out.
My Macbook will also run very loudly, and hot. I don't ever run too many programs at once, so I know that it's not a strain on the system from what I can tell.
I tried resetting the SMC since it sounded like the problems I am having would be solved by resetting it.
Are there any known problems such as these, or fixes? Thanks.

I've got a MacBook Pro 15' running 10.6.6. I want to use an external monitor for my graphic design work using Adobe software and thought I'd try an HD TV. I ran a Mini Display to HDMI lead to the TV but the picture quality was disappointing. I also tried a Mini Display to VGA lead and that wasn't much better. I tried all variations of resolutions in System prefs - Displays but nothing helped. Am I getting something wrong? Thanks all.

In addition to pixel density, you are up against the translation driver card in the TV.
If you read the fine print of computer-resolution-capability in the TV user guide, you will see a chart as tall as the manual page.  At the top is the smallest resolution capable, at the bottom is the full use of the 1080p in the TV.
Mac falls into the top 25% of the page, maxing out at 1366x768 often.  This is because the TV control card is expected to do too much of the work, but is not designed for computer-monitor processing.
I looked at the resolution charts on 2 TVs before deciding to buy a 1080p LCD monitor that has a TV interface/connector.  Computer monitor first, TV second.  But the thing is only 27 in.  Good thing TV is not as important to me as it is to others.

  • New mac mini and imac vs powermac G5 running FCP studio

I want to compare running the FCP suite on the new max minis and imacs that came out today vs what I am currently using:
Currently I am running FCP Studio on a Powermac G5 dual 2GHz with one gig of ram. I believe the frontside bus is 1GHz. I believe the stock video card isan ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP 8X Pro) video card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM.
With this being said, is it safe to assume that the new entry level mac mini would surpass my G5 in terms of performnce in both video (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with128MB or 256MB of shared DDR3) memory processing (intel core2 duo 2GHz)?
If not would the two low end Imacs (using NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory) and processing power handle FCP studio better than my current powermac G5 setup listed above?
I am wondering because I spoke to a apple sales person who transfered me to a system engineer that said I'd have a slow time rendering video on FCP with the mac minis as well as the 2 low end imacs. This may be but Im wondering if it is still better than what I am using
I appreciate your opinions, but please only answer if you really know,
    Thanks!

For FCP/FCS I would not save on anything but will get the max what my budget allow. You will be always doing more and the workflow in FCS will entice you to open almost all apps in FCS concurrently to make use of the advanced features. I think that the new iMac are powerful enough to handle FCS, but once again, the extra dollars will save you alot of pain. FCS is a pro app and is not to be underestimated. Good luck.

  • Macbook Pro is running slow after mavericks upgrade

    Hello everyone,
I recently downloaded the last update of Mavericks on my Macbook pro (13 inch, mid 2012).
Since the upgrade, my mac has been incredibly slow... I have tried different things including: completely re downloading and installing mavericks, running the apple hardware test (both short and long tests), I have tried to fix it through resetting the macbook to factory settings. None of my attempts were successful.
    The Hardware:
    Mid 2012 Macbook Pro.
    Running OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks
    2,5 GHz intel Core I5
    4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    The Problem:
I updated Mavericks to its last version (10.9.4) and all of a sudden my macbook became super slow. It had no problem before, even under Mavericks, so my guess was it is a problem linked to this last version...
    What I've Done Thus Far:
    - Apple Hardware Tests (both long and short): All passed
    - Reinstalled Mavericks
    - Restoring to factory settings
Any suggestions on what do to?
    Thank you!
    Nathan.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 - running slow after installing Yosemite

Can anyone help me - my late 2011 Macbook Pro is running very slow since installing Yosemite.  Also my Microsoft Office for Excel is not allowing me to type into cells - I can copy and paste but not add new text.
I have run the Etre diagnostic app (as suggested on another thread) and these are the results I get. Can anyone help - or do I have to uninstall Yosemite and how would I do this?

  • Macbook pro 13inch running slow and losing connection (had it for only a year)

Will someone please help me.. I've only had my mac book pro for a year only and few months ago I started experiencing that my macbook has been running slow lately.. I still have alot of memory in it because I only use it for browsing the net and saving some pictures on it and some videos and it. I have another laptop with me(Toshiba) and it works perfectly fine.. Honestly, I didn't switch to apple to get this kind of issues! Will someone help me please.. I seriously don't want to pay $50 just for them to trouble shoot it.. & I'm not the only one experiencing this problem... Alot of people I know that uses macbook are experiencing the same issues.  I hope someone can help me, Thanks!

Post a panic log so that we can see exactly is going on. Be sure that it includes the hardware profile at the bottom of the log.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 running very slowly after upgrading to Mavericks

I am in deep trouble with my wife so any help would be gratefully accepted.
Shortly after Mavericks became available I upgraded my wife's Macbook Pro 2011 to use the new OS version. Ever since then, the Macbook has been running noticeably slowly. In particular, Mail is almost unusuable taking minutes to open and showing long delays while moving around messages, folders, etc. Excel and Word are also much slower, Safari is slow, in fact just about everything is grinding.
Any ideas on what can I can do to improve things and apease my unhappy wife would be much appreciated.
I have attached the Etrecheck output FYI
    Thanks
    Andrew
