Is a N900 that operates on HDSPA in 850/1900/2100 ...

Hello!
Tomorrow my wife will go to the United States and I ask her to purchase a N900 for me.
The problem I have is that I use my phone very frequently in Argentina, were the frequencies to operate in HSDPA (3.5G) are 850/1900/2100 MHz.
Any one knows if Nokia USA are selling a version of the N900 that operates in this bands, instead of the 900/1900/2100 MHz?
Actually I'm using a N97 version RM-507 in Argentina without any problem.
Thank you a lot to anybody that can help me (It is URGENT!)

American one is no different, as iirc, american's complained that the device was not supported by the 3g bands of most providers.
the only exception i think is the asian one? i think it may have CDMA support, but dont quote me on that.
AFIAK  all the units are the same.   i dont rememebr hearing about cdma,   or i am sure i would have heard anout hudiniing the unit to work elsewhere.

    DISCLAIMER
A moderator deleted an entire thread with details that have helped many many users with N900 phones that are rebooting because they believed we were discussing debranding N900s..
Firstly, the N900 is not branded..
Secondly, we were discussing changing settings on the device to stop the devices from randomly rebooting.. Something SUGGESTED BY NOKIA on the bugs.maemo.org bug tracker website.
Nothing in this thread will invalidate your warranty and all information is condensed from official Maemo websites.
If your device is randomly rebooting:
RESTART YOUR DEVICE AFTER A RANDOM REBOOT
There is a counter inside your phone that increases by 3 every time it randomly reboots. If this counter reaches 50 (after 17 random reboots in a row) your device will probably stop booting ALL TOGETHER!
To stop your device from completely locking, you must power off your device normally. Use the power button then select "switch off". When you power your device back on, the counter is reset. Remember, if you don't reset your device, it will stop booting.
REPAIRING A DEVICE THAT NO LONGER BOOTS
If your device was randomly rebooting but now fails to boot it may have reached its count limit. When you turn on your device it may stop at the 5 dots loading screen and freeze.
Here's a method for getting your device working again.
    Download flasher-3.5:
For Nokia forums staff this is an OFFICIAL PUBLIC NOKIA TOOL. USING THIS TOOL DOES NOT AFFECT THE DEVICE WARRANTY. PLEASE DO NOT DELETE THIS POST AGAIN.
Flasher can be obtained from the Nokia website:
    http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-dev-env-downloads.php
Download and install flasher onto your computer. For more information on using flasher, you can see the maemo page here:
    http://wiki.maemo.org/Flasher
    Turn off your N900
    Remove the battery
Insert the battery.. but leave it off
Plug the USB cable into your computer.. This may not work in ALL ports on your computer. Sometimes ports at the back of the computer work better than those at the front.
Open the keyboard on your N900, press and hold the 'u' button and plug the USB cable into the N900.. keep the u button pressed.
The Nokia logo should appear on your device, a small USB icon should appear in the top right of the N900 screen. The backlight may not light up leaving the screen dark. You can release the u button now
NOW ENABLE R&D MODE TO START THE DEVICE
Use flasher application. On windows 7 this may mean running in windows xp mode
Open a cmd window (start run cmd) then enter these commands:
    cd "\program files\maemo\flasher-3.5"
    flasher-3.5.exe --enable-rd-mode
Flasher should run for a few seconds then exit.. If it hangs "waiting for suitable device" Try another port on your computer. Try a different computer. Ask questions here. Flasher doesn't always work on all machines
Remove the USB cable from your N900 and turn it on. It should boot up. Note that there is a small spanner icon under the Nokia logo
If your device still does not boot:
Check that the spanner icon is present when you turn the device on. If it is not, the device is not in R&D mode.. Start going through these instructions again
If the spanner logo is present and the device still does not boot, stop.. this process may not help you
    Turn the N900 back off
Press and hold the u button on the keyboard and plug the USB cable in. Keep the u button pressed
The Nokia logo should appear on your device, a small USB icon should appear in the top right of the N900 screen. The backlight may not light up leaving the screen dark. You can release the u button now
NOW DISABLE R&D MODE TO START THE DEVICE
In the cmd window on your pc, re-run the flasher command with a different option:
    flasher-3.5 --disable-rd-mode
Remove the USB cable and turn the phone back on
CHANGE ENABLE_OFF_MODE TO STOP RANDOM REBOOTS
I have written a tool to help stop the random reboots on N900 devices. This tool issues the following command
    echo 0 > /sys/power/enable_off_mode
and updates the /etc/pmconfig file to make the change permanent
To use the tool you will need to install the rootsh package:
     http://maemo.org/downloads/product/raw/Maemo5/rootsh/?get_installfile
     Now download the fixpm.sh file:
     http://chris.intrepid.cx/N900/fixpm.sh
Open an x terminal and type the following command
    sudo gainroot
    sh MyDocs/.documents/fixpm.sh enable
If you would like to disable the update, you can use the following commands:
    sudo gainroot
    sh MyDocs/.documents/fixpm.sh disable
Please click the kudos button if you found this helpful and please let me know if you have problems with the instructions, need help with them or if they didn't work

    Congrats!!
There are some steps you can follow to help stop your phone from rebooting...
Follow the steps in the first post under the section:
CHANGE ENABLE_OFF_MODE TO STOP RANDOM REBOOTS
Open these links on your N900:
Download and install the rootsh package:
    http://maemo.org/downloads/product/raw/Maemo5/rootsh/?get_installfile
    Download the fix script:
    http://chris.intrepid.cx/N900/fixpm.sh
Save it in the Documents folder
Open an X terminal and run these two commands
    sudo gainroot
    sh MyDocs/.documents/fixpm.sh enable

  • Is there an effect that operates opposite of what the Magnifier does

Something that can counter the "Magnify" effect. A way of looking into the landscape in a way, pushing a piece of the image in from the rest of the image?
    Thanks

Yeah that creates dimensions. But is there a way of distorting (when it reaches a certain size) a piece of the image inwards in the image?

  • Is there more than one version of 9300?

I'm thinking of buying a 9300 but am confused:
Are there two versions, one that supports 3G on bands 850 / 1900 / 2100 and a second that handles AWS band IV (900 / 1700 / 2100)?   Or is there only one version and it can handle both?
IF there is one version, then I presume that I can buy any 9300 and put in a SIM to use with the new AWS carriers in Canada (e.g. WIND, Mobilicity).
If there are two versions, does anyone know how to tell them apart?
(I am aware that the 9330 operates on different bands, only).
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I took a look at those links.  The only  thing that sticks out is that one has a conventional hard drive and the other has a hybrid drive with a built-in cache.  I think the model with the conventional drive also has a 16GB m.2 SSD as a separate cache.
The tccbook (Western Europe) might be of some help.  If I'm interpreting the ++ at the end of the model #'s, that's where the "UK" would go.  If that's the case, you can find further specs here:  ThinkPad Tablets and Convertibles (W.E.)
According to that, the differences are that the 20CD000M++ has a conventional HDD + a small cache SSD, where the 20CD00AJ++ has a hybrid drive.  The AJ also includes a Mini-HDMI to VGA Cable.
I admit to guessing a bit at this, so please double-check with the vendor if you can.

    3. Minimum 64MB RAM (128 MB is desirable).
    4. ARM/XScales/Samsung S3C processor.
    5. Minimum 2GB flash memory.
I had shortlisted on the following series of devices
    1. HP iPAQ hw6940/hw6945 Mobile Messenger
    2. The Hp iPAQ rx5900
Please help me with the recommended devices/comments on the devices I mentioned above.

  • Breaking Up is Hard to Do!

This is my fond Adieu to all of you.
After over 4 months of frustration, lack of information from Apple, too many Apple posts on my part, I deactivated my iPhone effective this past Tuesday and moved on to another smartphone that already had many of the features that I have yearned for and is more related to my business/personal needs.
I found it interesting watching MSNBC the other morning -the Joe Scarborough show “Morning Joe”. He was doing the morning business report in conjunction with CNBC and he was commenting on the iPhone.
Scarborough said – “iPhone keyboard is too small for him, and after the original luster wore off he no longer takes his iPhone from his home in Pensacola to NYC where he does his daily cable show”. He went on to say “he finds the iPhone is great for his teenage children but not for his business needs and does not plan to use it”. You need to understand that he received his iPhone gratis from Apple from what I understand.
My new smartphone has but is not limited to:
    • GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA
    • Frequency: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz (GSM/GPRS/EDGE); 850/1900/2100 MHz (UMTS/HSDPA)
    • GSP with Built in GPS Antenna
    • Memory: 256 MB Flash ROM and 128 MB SRAM (Nowhere near the iPhone)
    • 2.8 inches QVGA; 240 x 320 pixels, 65K color touch screen (Not like Apple)
    • Sliding QWERTY keyboard
    • Speakerphone
    • Push To Talk capable -- connect easily with 1 or up to 30 people with just the push of a button
    • Voice Recorder
    • 3G service. 3G service is not available in all areas.
    • Still Camera
    • Video Camera
    • Mobile Email -- Xpress Mail, Microsoft Direct Push, POP3/IMAP4, Active Sync, BlackBerry Connect email solutions supported
    • Text Messaging -- send/receive short messages
    • Multimedia Messaging -- send/receive messages comprised of text and images
    • Mobile Instant Messaging -- send/receive messages in real time using AOL® Instant Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo!® Messenger
    .3 megapixel camera with auto—focus
    • Up to 10x Digital Zoom
    • Cellular Video (CV) -- watch streaming video on your device*
    • Video Share -- share a live or recorded video during a call*
    • Music -- download music to use your device as a music player (XM Radio Mobile comes preloaded)
    • Windows Media Player 10 Mobile -- to play music or videos
    • Preloaded Games
    • Doesn’t have stock UI
    • Doesn’t have the nice Weather Interface
These are some of features that are available on my new smartphone. May not have the great Apple UI or the graphics but its the age-old problem of *functionality vs. glamor*.
Allan S., RonA2, bnbzone aka Earless Puppy, Jim Urban, 4n6doc, Gunny, and all the rest of you great posters. I also do not want forget our Apple moderators/facilitators Nathan C. and Jason L.
After 1410 posts which at times have been a very informative over the 4 months and lots of fun from time to time.
Who knows, maybe I will be back when the iPhone is better suited to my functional needs.

The thing I think most people forget is that the Apple iPhone is a first generation phone from a company that has NEVER produced cell phones before. If one thinks about how popular and amazingly useful their first try has been, you have to admit that with that in mind, they have sold the 4th most popular phone in the US. Not bad for a "computer" company.
The funny thing to me is people forget that. I realize that some don't have the luxury of waiting and growing with the iPhone. But I truly believe that those of you who keep those things in mind you'll find a much more user-centric and perfect phone for business and casual users alike.
One thing Apple is superior at is listening to its customers requests. The more we tell them we would like to see in the iPhone, the more they will add. I have no doubt that this phone is and will change the landscape of cell phones even more as time goes on.
For me, I'll keep my iPhone. I love it. And it has changed my perception of what cell phones are capable of. I can only imagine how amazing this phone will be when Version 2 or 3 is released. Just look at the development and progression of the iPod in just a few short years. I have no doubt the iPhone will also grow into the amazing product Apple and the rest of the world expects it to be. It already is for me. It has eliminated the need for me to carry an iPod, cell phone, even my MacBook Pro stays home much more than it used to. After-all what is the iPhone but a tiny laptop with even better graphics than my MBP. You can see I am smitten with my iPhone and I was one of the people who slept out over night to get mine. (Even though most stores didn't run out until a few days later. I just couldn't wait. From what Apple was telling us the iPhone could do right out of the box, I knew I just had to have one. And i have not been disappointed even once with it.
Version 2? Imagine. You just may be back to get your iPhone back. No other phone comes even close to it's usability!
What phone did you end up getting anyway? I can't imagine with what;s out there, a trade off that isn't a short change from the iPhone.

  • Nokia 5030 and GSM 850/1900

    Hi,
My brother bought a Nokia 5030 phone for his trip to the USA, on the Nokia website at http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-5030/specifications Nokia 5030 according to specifications it support the following frequencies: EGSM 900/1800
    GSM 850/1900
The phone worked fine on the EGSM 900/1800 Frequency.
Before buying we checked with Nokia support and they told him that the phone should work in the USA. Now he is there and his Nokia 5030 couldn't detect any operator either by auto or manual search, he tried putting his SIM card in another phone and it detected a network, so its not the SIM.
I have tried contacting Nokia support in my country, and they still told me that the phone should work in the USA.
They told to try and perform a factory reset, but it didn't help.
Also the box says "made in Romania" and it has only EGSM 900/1800 written on it.
Also in the manual there is in mention of GSM 850/1900 frequency.
My brother had to buy another phone (a Nokia) to communicate with me.
Is there something wrong with that particular Nokia 5030 phone,
or it does not support GSM 850/1900 frequencies,
in that case why Nokia support tells me that it should work and the Nokia website lists that frequency in the specifications.
    Thanks.
Message Edited by sergy1 on 01-Oct-2009 09:04 AM

    Hi,
I see I’m not the only one that encountered that issue.
I think that unless you have a manual or box that says that the device supports GSM 850/1900 frequencies, it will unfortunately not work and I think that software update won’t solve it as it appears to be a hardware issue.
Its looks like that they’ve listed this phone as a quadband in their internal documentation so that the tech support and sales thinks that this phone is a quadband while its not.
(I called twice before buying and spoke with two different customer service representatives that assured me that the phone supports the US frequencies, and that it must have been a mistake that the manual does not list it as such.)
I hope that Nokia will notice and finally update the Nokia 5030 online specifications page, so that it would explicitly state that Nokia 5030 is not a quadband phone, like they did with their other phones.
    Here is a little update:
After escalating my support request, and speaking to the customer support manager (and repeatedly asking for them to verify it with global Nokia), Nokia Israel (It’s actually represented in Israel by a company called Eurocom) acknowledged my request to return the phone for a full refund to the retailer, and offered me a small compensation (which I guess is better that no compensation at all).
Today I should return it to the retailer, and I hope there won’t be additional problems with that.
One thing I liked about the phone, (I guess this feature is available on most new Nokia’s phones) is its alarm clock feature that pronounces the current time as it tells you to wake up…
    One more thing,
Notice the fine print that appears on the nokia 5030 specs page:
“The availability of particular products, services and features may vary by region. Please check with the Nokia dealer nearest you. These specifications are subject to change without notice”
I hope that you will be able to solve the problem like I did.

  • Lumia 800 not picking up 3G T-mobile network

Hi there, I am having problems picking up the T-mobile 3G network with the Lumia 800. The phone works fine on the 2G EDGE network...but data connection is soooo slow!!! I think the phone may not be compatible with the 3G network. Anyone having the same issue?
    Thanks in advance.

When you sday T Mobile, you mean T Mobile USA or one of the many T Mobile's of Europe?
In Europe T Mobile uses the same frequencies as the other operators. In the USA, T Mobile uses a unique frequency band called AWS only used by them, and a canadian operator (and one in Chili I understood).
In total there are 5 3G frequency bands used in the world, and 4 GSM bands. Almost no phones have all bands. (In fact Nokia Symbian3 models are almost the only models that do.) Most phones have a subset only.
The Lumia 800 has 3 of these five 3G bands. But there are two models.
    1) The European model (still sold through Amazon or other channels in the US,) has the 900/1900/2100 band, which makes it work in Europe, most of Asia and on most of AT&T's 3G network.
    2) The US model, which has the 850/1900/2100 bands, which makes it work on AT&T, and most of Europe and parts of Asia.
Neither of these two models work on T Mobile USA.
The 710 model, when you get the US model at least, does work on T Mobile USA though.

This link includes the now available and coming soon countries.
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/countries/
The iPhone 3G is sold in some countries as officially unlocked - usually sold at a significantly higher price than the carrier locked version in that country, along with having to pay an additional unlock fee. France is one, and I believe Australia is another. For the most part, the iPhone is sold in each country as carrier locked with the designated provider or providers in each country.
Using a hack to unlock a carrier locked phone to be used with a different provider than the iPhone 3G was intended is against Apple's license agreement for the iPhone, voids the warranty, and is not supported by Apple.

  • WiFi N compatibility

I see on the web spec page that the iPhone is 803.11 b/g compatible. But I want to run my Airport Extreme in the higher "N" mode for the families Macbooks and my pro. Is Apple going to support the "N" mode protocol on the iPhones? I hope I will not have to be left behind with my current iPhone if Apple does (and I hope they will support it). If it is a hardware upgrade will it be offered to current owners in some fashion?

    You're welcome.
I am a user just like yourself. I'm not a developer, nor do I have any ties to Apple.
Copied from this link - tech specs for the iPhone 3GS, under the Cellular and wireless section.
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
    +UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)+
    +GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)+
    +*Wi-Fi (802.11b/g)*+
    +Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR+
The iPhone 3GS does not include an "n" compatible wireless card, and I'm not aware of any cell phones that do at the present time.
Since this is hardware related, you can't convert a b/g only compatible wireless card to an "n" compatible wireless card with a firmware update, and I think it is doubtful that Apple would offer a hardware upgrade for existing iPhones if/when an "n" compatible wireless card becomes available with a new iPhone model.

  • Help with Nokia e5's Operating bands

Hello I want to buy a Nokia E5-00 and I have a doubt about the operating bands. Are there versions of the phone that work only within WCDMA Band I 2100 and WCDMA Band VIII 900 but not with WCDMA Band V 850 and WCDMA Band II 1900? Or there is only one version of the phone and it works with all wcdma bands? Regards

    @poquitaonda
It is either WCDMA Band I + II + VIII (900+1900+2100) or WCDMA Band I + II + V (850+1900+2100) dependent upon region of supply.

  • UK N97 Mini (white) Compatible w/US 3G???

Hi first time posting here/new potential Nokia user...basically looking for a White N97 Mini that is compatible to work on ATT's 3G frequencies, reason I ask is that th NokiaUK site shows the following: Operating Frequency Quad band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900 WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100 Automatic switching between GSM bands ...and from what I understand the European versions should not work with the US 3G (AT&T), appreciate any help, thanks for the time. *NokiaUSA only has the Black color for sale :/ Regards...

You'll have to find out which frequencies AT&T uses, as AFAIK the n97 mini has triband support for 3G
850/1900/2100 for the rest of the world
    900/1900/2100 for NAM

  • 1208 working in the GSM networks in the U.S.?

Question: any idea whether the 1208 model would work in the U.S. GSM networks?
On the sales package I got there is this marking
"GSM 900/1800 EGSM850/1900" which I believe indicates that it should work in the GSM networks in the U.S.
When I tried the online phone feature comparing tool on nokia.com, it's also indicated there that the frequency bands include 850/1900.
But the user guide of my phone (9202384/Issue 3 EN) says
"The wireless device described in this guide is approved for use on the GSM 900 and GSM 1800 networks."
That is, the phone would not work on the 850/1900 bands.
    So which info is correct?
    Thanks

    Hi guys,
I found your posts and got strongly interested in.
I'm on a business trip in Canada. I bought Nokia 1208 in Russia, my service provider is also in Russia and gives me international roaming including a one in Canada.
The operating frequencies mentioned on the phone wrapping are exactly the same as “pafr” wrote above. And the ones mentioned in the user guide (2 ones) are the same as “pafr” has in his own guide with the only difference: my user guide is in Russian
The trouble is the phone is not working in Canada. It writes "No network coverage". The phone worked in Russia but it isn’t in Canada.
When I was buying the device, I asked the vendor whether it would work in Canada, and they answered YES. Having faced with the issue, I asked Nokia Support (at their site) what’s wrong with it. But they answered the phone should work and no actual help.
A friend of mine has got Motorola. He also bought the phone in Russia and has international roaming here, in Canada. He took his phone with him to Canada on a business trip too. It works. I borrowed his phone and inserted my SIM card into it. With my SIM card inserted in his phone, the network was immediately found (Rogers). Our location is Belleville, Ontario. Then we put his SIM-card in my Nokia 1208 and it didn't work either. So, it's not an issue with service provider. The service works indeed. It's the issue with the phone itself (Nokia 1208).
I’ve got an expert opinion that the phone is dual band but it comes in two versions, one for USA/Canada (GSM 850-1900) and one for Europe (GSM 900-1800). Obviously I have the European version, so... To my deep disappointment, Nokia Support (neither Canadian nor Russian) did not manage to agree with that and continue answering my phone should work in Canada. That’s all “help” I have had from them. This is extremely strange that Nokia look incompetent with their own product.
Do you know if there’s any chanсe to make my phone work? My be it needs some kind of initial activation, so that it could work then? How did “pafr” make their Nokia work?
