Is a network (wifi or wired) need to use an apple tv 2?

so my question is if i want to only use my ipad 2 to "airplay" or "mirror " (for that fact) content (movies, music, pictures etc.) to my apple tv 2, do i need to have a network connection (wifi or wired) for it work...so like if i want to use my apple tv 2 in a hotel, or a relatives house that doesn't have "network"?

Unfortunately yes - you need a wireless LAN at a minimum.
iPads cannot set up an ad hoc network with AppleTVs.
AppleTVs can't connect to wi-fi using web based login screens in hotels, though could connect to a network where you knew username/password.
You might consider a small mi-fi type device that can behave as a portable router.
Worth pointing out that in general AppleTV2 also requires an internet not just a LAN connection to play protected content needing authorisation.

Is your Apple ID set properly at Settings > iTunes & App Stores?
If so, log out from there and log back in.
If that doesn't solve it (it should), check Settings > General > Restrictions

I need to use the "Apple key" which I presume is the command key; my computer does not have an apple keyboard; is there a key on a logitech keyboard which will serve the same purpose?

The "Windows flag" key on PC keyaboard in Commans, "Alt" is option.
Go to Logitech website to see if they have Mac compatibility software (Logictech Control Center) to make mappings a bit more complex).

  • I installed OS Lion on my late 2009 Macbook and now I am having issues with WiFi.  When my computer goes to sleep my mac won't recognize my WiFi and I need to use the network assistant EVERYTIME to get on the internet.

Very frustrated as my Macbook has been freezing a lot especially when streaming video online or sometimes just by being on a website with a lot of flash.  I've updated all my software and I have 4 gigs of ram.  I do have most of my 250 gig hard drive used up....coud this be an issue?

  • Do I need to use an apple monitor for my pc to work right.

I brought a G5 tower without a hard drive.  Put a new 1 terabite hard drive and got new osx 10.5.  Having trouble installing the osx.   Seems like the optical drive is not reading the disk.  Swapout optical drives with one from another working pc (dell), still not reading disk.  Do I really need to have apple
keyboard, mouse, and monitor, for it to work properly.  Am I just waisting time and money.

A windows monitor, mouse, and keyboard will work on most older Mac computers. However you really need a Apple keyboard because there are some different keyboard keys your gonna need like the Apple and Option key that a windows keyboard doesn't have.
As far as the hard drive I work mostly on windows hardware so someone like BDAqua would be very knowledgeable with that. I seem to think you need the hardware drivers for the G5 that may or may not be with the new OS 10.5? A Dell hard drive will not work with the G5 if it already has a windows OS installed to it, you'd have to reformat the Dell hard drive while in a Dell computer to erase it. Your not wasting your time.

  • TS2972 What if I have a different apple ID than my wife? We can't use the apple TV with her account too?

    See above question.

    Have you done the following?
         1.  On your TV screen select menu
         2.  Select settings
         3.  Select iTunes store
         4.  Select account
         5.  Select Add New Account (you can have more than one account here)
You can then switch between Apple ids which are running different devices and different Apple ids.
    Cheers

I need to use it over my university's wifi. theres no option to enter username and password. how to connect the apple tv to such enterprise network?

Contact the University's IT dept, they may be able to set something up on the network to allow the ATV to connect without the need for a user name/password.

  • Networking Wifi + Ethernet?

I have a new Mac Pro which is connected to an Airport Extreme via Cat 5 wire. I also use a MacBook Pro which is connected via Wifi. I want to share files etc between both comupters. But I read a post that advised against connecting a wired computer to a wifi computer. I prefer using wifi for the laptop as I can change its location in the house. And I prefer using a wired connection on the Mac Pro as I often upload extremely large files. Security is not an issue as I am the sole user. Obviously I'm no IT pro.
    Suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks!

But I read a post that advised against connecting a wired computer to a wifi computer.
Without knowing the specific context of the question or discussion, it is not possible to say whether this is good or not so good advice.
If you are trying to transfer or copy a large amount of data from one computer to another, the transfer will occur much faster over a wired connection. No doubt about that.
Wireless is also susceptible to picking up interference from other sources or other WiFi networks near you, but without knowing specific details about everything at your location, it is not possible to say whether or not one wired and one wireless computer would work well, work OK, work poorly, or not work at all.
Why not try it out and see if it meets your needs? This is really one of those types of questions where the answer boils down to something like......you won't know how well it will work for you until you try it out on your network in your home.

  • No "Wake for network access" over wired LAN

    Hello,
I could not get “Wake for network access” to work over wired LAN connection. If I have WiFi enabled as well, or WiFi is the only network interface enabled the “Wake for network access” works fine. However, my Mac Pro is not responding to when I am trying to reach it remotely if only the wired Lan connection is used.
Mac Pro 6-Core 3.33GHz 24GB RAM, latest updates, Snow Leopard, “Wake for network access” enabled in Energy Saver settings.
It seams to me, that it was working some time ago.
Can anyone suggest me places to look to, settings to check, commands to run ..... to get it working?

Thank you Grant Bennet-Alder for responding. I will try to describe it as step-by-step as possible.
    - I have back to my mac enabled with screen and file sharing on my Mac Pro
    - By default I use wired NIC to connect my MP to network with manual configuration. (I have tried enable DHCP for that interface, however, the result was the same)
If I need to reach files on my Mac Pro (while I am away from it) from my Macbook Pro, I open finder on my MBP where I see my Mac Pro. I click on it if I need to access files or use "Share screen..." button if I want to access MP screen. I have the same result if I try to enter vnc://xxx or afp://xxx
my MBP tries to reach MP and brings the message after some time: Connection failed to "xxxxx" Please make sure the screen sharing is enabled....."
I have no problems remotely accessing my MP if:
         - it is not sleeping (i.e. I ask someone at home to touch its keyboard to wake it up)
         - I have AirPort turned on on my Mac Pro
I could not access my Mac Pro if:
         - it is sleeping and AirPort is off (the only wired NIC is used to connect to LAN)
It does not matter am I trying to get screen/file sharing on local network or via internet - the result is the same - if the only wired connection to network is used and MP sleeps - no access.

  • What's best - WiFi or Wired?

I'm sure this is an easy one for some folks out there but i thought i'd ask.
I was thinking hypothetically, if i was downloading a large file over the net, lets says a 3GB movie for arguments sake, would it download quicker onto my MacBook Pro if left on WiFi, or wired to a network port?
I understand that it depends on my ISP speeds too, but i thought WiFi only allowed 54mbps connection between router and laptop?

Others have explained why your ISP is probably the limiting factor in speed, but there are other factors which play into "best". Do you need to be mobile? If so, then wired is not a good choice, but you trade off something for that mobility. If you don't need to be mobile, then wired may be a better choice, as there are fewer things that can cause service interruption on a wired connection than on a wireless one. Some cordless phones, microwaves, etc can cause interference on the frequencies used by wifi, so you may drop your connection if you are using wifi and a source of interference happens along.
I have 802.11n, and gigabit ethernet in my house, but I only have a 6Mbps DSL line. I still tend to use wired service more because it gives me better performance between the other computers in my house which makes up close to 50-75% of my total network traffic. If I used the wifi, I could move around a bit easier, but accessing the large files on my server in the basement, or sharing pictures with my wife would be slower.

  • Home Thin Network - What do I need?

I want to set up a Home Thin Server \ Client network. I have a pretty decent system that I want to use as my thin server... I will have it connected to my living room TV so thoughts of a media center may come to fruition later when I get a BlueRay player for it and a tv-tuner card. I have 4 laptops that I want to use as thin-clients that I can utilize the thin server for all of the processing and video power while connected at home or away on other wi-fi\broadband networks. I'll later on add true thin-clients in bedrooms and will upgrade my thin-server computer in parralel.
I need ideas on how to set this up. I want various OS options. I need Windows, Linux and Solaris for reasons I'll spare you the time. Essentially, I need Solaris as my work will be upgrading to SunRay Thinserver and Clients and I need to learn it fast... what better way then to put into action at home right?
Here are the scenerio's that I want to accomplish.
    1) I have four laptops that are a couple years old that I need to do heavier audio video work and gaming needs. I don't want to upgrade this laptop right now so I want to be able to log into my home server and use it to do the work and send back the video to the laptop. I have a wife and 2 kids and 1 getting older so it's a little difficult to upgrade 5 laptops right now. :)
    2) I want to log into the server and be able to choose Windows, Linux or Solaris. This is where I get a little hung up. Should I get a 10 License Windows Server copy for the thin-server and put Solaris on it to run the thin-server management or does Solaris have to run natively and I need to use vmware or something to run the individual server applications like Windows Server with Active Directory and another with a Linux Server (I'll probably start with Ubuntu Server as I need a simple solution until I learn and understand it more).
I'm not sure how this would all work but basically I want to be able to log into the server with any of my PCs wether at home or away and be able to choose which OS I want to launch. If I have to run Solaris natively on the clients, that's fine.. but I want Windows to be launched with full functionality whenever needed. I hope someone can see into what I'm trying to do and free solutions are welcome but if I'm stuck with having to purchase additional software or hardware, I will. I work in the IT field so I'm pretty knowledgeable but I'm a newbie to Linux\Solaris\Thin Networks and I know I'm going out of the norm by setting one up at home but this is what I want to do.
Does anyone have any hints or guides to help me? Thanks for any knowledge you can contribute!

Sorry. You're going to have to give us a wee bit more information if you expect intelligent responses.

  • Internet Sharing WiFi **TO** Wired Ethernet

    Back Ground:
    I have a Late 2013 MBP Retnia.
I have WiFi access via a captured portal.
I have other WiFi and Wired (Ethernet) devices that can not authenticate to a captured portal.
    Question:
    1) On the single MBP mentioned can I connect to the captured portal WiFi via one band (say 2.4) and then become a WiFI hotspot with the other band (say 5)?
    2) On the single MBP mentioned can I connect to the captured portal WiFi via one band (say 2.4) and then share the Internet connection to the Thunderbolt Ethernet connector?

    Hi gregbogus,
Checking the Internet Sharing options in the Sharing System Preference, there's not an option to specify which wireless band is used for what, but you can share from Wi-Fi to Ethernet (or vice versa).

  • Can AppleTV v2 extend WiFi to Wired?

I'm currently running an Airport Express (802.1n model) to stream audio over WiFi to my stereo. It's also set up to extend the WiFi network to the Wired jack, allowing my TV, Wii and BluRay to connect to the Internet.
I'm considering replacing the Express with an Apple TV to add Apple Remote, NetFlix and other stuff, but it's not clear that the Apple TV supports the WiFi->Wired bridging that the Express provides. Am I going to have to keep the Express to continue to provide Ethernet for my other AV devices or can the Apple TV handle this?

    no.
TV is not a wireless extender.

When I'm using iCloud, and I'm NOT in wifi will I need to pay a service provider for data useage?

It's your choice. If you know that you will be away from wifi then you could download the music that you want to listen to so that it is available on your phone. If you do subscribe to Match and want to be able to access it via your carrier's network then you will also need to be an area where you get reception from your carrier.
There are also some wifi-enabled external drives that allow you to stream content to a device e.g. Seagate GoFlex Satellite
