Is a possible to get 3 primary partitions on a SATA HDD?

It seems a simple question, but would like to have some opinions on this. I have Vista pre-installed but non-bootable besides a bootable XP.
I want to add a 3rd OS to share the boot with XP, keeping Vista on reserve. I know there is another primary partition on the SATA disc, WinRE, the recovery partition for Vista.
So, in reality, there would be 4 primary partitions, two bootable. Could there be any trouble with this?
Thanks for any comment.

Yes, you can create 3 primary partitions.
My notebook uses dual boot option I use XP and Vista. Both OS are bootable.
I have installed Vista firstly. Then I created 3rd partition using the settings in Vista disk management.
Then I have installed the XP on the new partition.
After this procedure I was not able to boot the Vista again because the Win XP has damage the Vistas boot manager. This was only a small issue. I could renew the Vista boot manager booting from Vista CD and choosing the repair option.
Finally I have installed BootVis (its a tool to manage Vista boot manager) and could add the XP to the boot manager.
Of course its possible to add further OS but I think XP and Vista is enough.
Maybe this short description could help you to add further OS.

  • Getting four primary partitions on X121e

I got my X121e i3 last week. I want to dual boot with Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7, with a primary partition for each OS and one for my data/pics/documents etc.  However, there is already a system_drv partition and then the Lenovo Recovery Q: partition, making 5 partitions in total, one too many.
I used the recovery centre to create recovery 'boot media' and 'data media' on an external USB hard drive (this has taken about 9GB of space). I want to confirm that with this I will be able to reinstall the entire Windows 7 OS, or do I need to make another backup USB to do this? If done with DVD/CDs it seems you need 4 disks from reading other posts, so is it the same on USB?
I want to safely delete the Q: partition so that I can have 4 partitions, but with the option of beimg able to reinstall Windows should my first Linux experiment go wrong!
    Thanks

Hello jienchino and welcome to community,
You can restore the system with usb disk however, I will suggest you to create recovery disc on DVD as safer side.

  • Unable to access data/storage space of failed primary partition after internet recovery

    Hello,
So just a bit of quick background info to the issue:  I experienced my first major failure with my iMac a few weeks ago (early Feb) where the main partition on my 3TB Fusion drive developed a corruption of some sort. I went through all the disk verification/repair procedures I could find, however nothing worked and I ended up with a grey screen on bootup that had a round logo with a slash through it. I tried a reinstall of OS X Yosemite from the recovery partition, however this failed part-way through, and I was forced to perform an internet recovery instead.
This worked, and I now have my iMAC stable again, however the recovery process created a new primary partition in addition to the old primary partition. This wasn't a major issue for me as I planned to recover some files from the failed partition that my backups had missed. Unfortunately since then, that old partition has disappeared and I can't get it back. I figure I have lost those files, but what is really annoying is the space that old partition took up has not freed up. My 3TB fusion drive is only letting me use 120GB of the space (the size of the new primary partition).
So I guess I have two questions:
1 - Is there a way to find and get the old partition back mounting again? The drives that list with a 'diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list' command are attached, but do not appear to contain the old partition that I am after (I've tried manually mounting them via the terminal to check).
2 - If recovering that old partition is not possible, how do I go about freeing up the space it occupied?
    System details:
    OS X Yosemite v10.10.2
    Mac (27-inch, Late 2012)
Processor: 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Any assistance on this one would be greatly appreciated - I can't restore all my files from backups as I am running low on HDD space.
    Cheers,
    Nick

    Hi Eric,
See attached screen shot - is that what you are after?
As you can see I don't have access to the rest of the 3TB fusion drive. I'm thinking I may have to do a clean OS install so I have prepared a Yosemite USB install key ready to go.
Unless you guys can suggest something that is.
Thanks in advance for your help,

  • Satellite U400 - How to get back formatted partition with HDD Recovery

    Hello,
I have bought a new Satellite U400 notebook with Vista Home preinstaled on it.
I went throught initial configuration and after it has been done I realised that HDD partitions do not suits my needs.
So I resised the "Vista" partition (acctually I have shrinked it) and made the "Data" partition bigger.
I did not do anything with hidden partition.
Unfortunately when I did this procedure I formated the "Data" partition.
Now when I want to make backup DVD with TOSHIBA Recovery Disc Creator I got the error message saying that it is not possible because I have formated the "Data" partition.
Are there any suggestion how to solve this error?
The system goes fine, the only thing is that I am not able to backup and restore OS.
    Thanks Vecerka

Another possibility besides getting yourself a new copy of recovery DVD is, that you could use 3rd party programs to make an image or backup of your actual system.
I think Norton Ghost or Acronis TrueImage are good programs, but I only used last named one, so can't tell if Norton tool is equal to Acronis.
And if you do not want to order recovery disc online, you always can visit your local ASP for doing this job for you. ;)

  • How to create a new partion in my HP (Compaq LE1902x )PC that has already 4 primary partitions ?

How to create a new partion (to save my files & Folders) in my HP (Compaq LE1902x )PC that has already 4 primary partitions ? when something goes wrong along with OS(C) drive my all files are lost. so i want to create a new partition & dedicate it to my files & folders.

I would consider another problem. What if the hard drive (not the OS) fails. You'd lose all your data, all partitions. It seems better logic would be to copy your files and folders to either an external hard drive or USB thumb drive.
I would not use the internal backup program, but would manually copy the data. I also would not leave such device attached to the computer.
In my system I have a separate USB thumb drive that stored critical medical and legal documents. That way, I can travel with it, as needed. I also clone my primary desktop every 30-45 days. That way, if I get a failure, it's only that far back on lesser files.

  • Tecra S11 - What are the two primary partitions for?

    Hello everybody
I just got myself a new Tecra S11 with Win7 64 and there's one thing that wonders me a littlebit.
There are four partitions in total, for sure there's the Recovery one (1.46 GB) and the System one (256.38 GB), but then there are also two primary partitions (8.86 and 31.38 GB) without any displayed use or file system. There's no non-allocated space.
Can somebody tell me what these two partitions are for ? Because I want to split the system partition up to store my data on a separated one, if possible I also want to use that "unknown" space then ;)
Besides that: Don't worry, I already made recovery DVDs.
    Greetings
    Nico

This is funny: I just recreated the entire Harddrive using the recovery DVDs, now the two primary partitions are gone and the space is integrated into the system one, lovely :)
Is this maybe a faulty pre installation ?

  • Is it possible to get 2-ch signals from TDS2012 oscilloscope at the same time with LabVIEW "7.0"?

    Hi, everyone.
I've been trying to get the signals from 2-ch of Tektronix TDS2012 oscilloscope at the same time using IVI connection with LabVIEW "7.0"
I've already searched this developer zone for the answer.
I've tried the famous example: "IviScope - Acq Dual Wfm Edge Triggered.vi"
and it gave me the error message like:
Error -1074110451 occurred at IviScope Initialize With Options.vi
    Possible reason(s):
Driver Status:  (Hex 0xBFFA600D) Primary Error: (Hex 0xBFFA600D) The Config Server module is not present on the system.
I think I've installed all~ the required softwares for IVI. For example, ICP 2.2, IVI engine 2.0.46, and tktds1k2k ivi (instrument driver for tds2012, in fact this one is for LabVIEW "7.1"... :-P)
TDS2012 and my computer is connected through HPIB(GPIB) and it is shown on the MAX (a GPIB instrument as well as an IVI hardware asset)
I've tried GPIB connection but it gives me asynchronous signals...
Is it possible to get 2 signals at the same time with LabVIEW 7.0(not 7.1 or higher) by any means?
What in the earth is the "Config Server" in this case?
I don't need to sticking to IVI and any method to achieve my goal will be welcome.
Could anyone give me the hint for this problem, plz?

I think your problem is that the instrument specific driver is version 7.1 and you are using the class driver with 7.0. You can create your own 7.0 driver by downloading the LabWindows driver and using the Import CVI Instrument Driver under the Tools>Instrumentation menu.
Since you don't seem to have a good reason to use IVI, why don't you try the native LabVIEW driver at http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/niid_web_display.download_page?p_id_guid=E3B19B3E9139659CE034080020E748.... I believe you have all of the functions to setup each channel and then when you trigger the scope, both channels will be captured. You would then transfer each waveform separately. The data is always read sequentially but that's not important as long as both channels are triggered at the same time.

  • Partitions, installing , raw- no_fs and "Bad primary partition"

I have been using Archlinux with kde-mod, installed with the Chakra live-cds for some time on a couple of different machines. You may be aware Chakra has now moved away from archlinux to roll it's own distro so this is my first attempt to install "The Arch Way".
I have an HP dv6t-2000 laptop, preinstalled with Windows 7, though I'm really fed-up with Windows at this point I do want to keep it installed on the machine.
The setup of the hard drive is currently (as shown in the Windows7 partition utility):
SYSTEM       NTFS      199MB  (System, Active, Primary Partition)
C:                  NTFS       394.12GB (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)
RECOVERY (D:) NTFS     12.85GB   (Primary Partition)
(there used to be a partition titled HP_TOOLS which I deleted a while ago (that may have been a mistake, I don't think I backed it up, I think it was last time I got really pissed off with windows and wanted to install Linux immediately)
What I have trid doing, starting with the configuration as above it:
    > using the windows utility to shrink the C: partition to make space
    > booting into gparted live CD
        > creating an extended partition
        > creating boot (ext2), root (ext4), home (ext4) and swap partitions within this
    > booting the archlinux 64 bit netinstall CD
        > when I get to Prepare Hard drive - manually configure I see something like:
    /dev/sda  raw->no_fs
    /dev/sda1  raw->no_fs
    /dev/sda2  raw->no_fs
    /dev/sda3  raw->no_fs
       > If  I go to manually partition hard drive for sda I get the message
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 2: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder
At this point I'm getting tired and liable to do something reckless (like when I deleted the HP_TOOLS partition), I I thought I better stop, take a breather and ask some people with more experience.
I'm sorry If I am short on details here, as I say I've spent a bit too long trying to sort this out and got tired and confused, I will fill in any details that are asked for, thank you for reading.

`/dev/sda1  raw->no_fs` means "you didn't tell me what's on here yet", the installer should do some autodetection but this is not implemented yet.  so don't worry about this, just leave them alone.
    the other one, not sure

  • Getting the primary key from order form

Does anyone know how to get the primary key (DocEntry) off of the order form for an existing order?  I don't really want to use the DocNum field since it is not the primary key and theoretically two different orders could have the same DocNum.  Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Joe,
DocEntry and DocNum values are unique, so you cannot have in db 2 orders with the same DocNum. It's possible, that DocEntry and DocNum values can vary.
If you know the DocNum value (f.e. from Order's Form), you can simple use RecordSet object:
    Dim sQuery as String
    Dim oOrder as SAPbobsCOM.Documents
    Dim oRecordSet As SAPbobsCOM.Recordset
    Set oOrder = oCompany.GetBusinessObject(oOrders)
    Set oRecordSet = oCompany.GetBusinessObject(BoRecordset)
    sQuery = "Select DocEntry From ORDR Where DocNum = '" & DocNumber & "'"
    oRecordSet.doQuery sQuery
    If oRecordSet.RecordCount > 0 Then
      oOrder.GetByKey(oRecordSet.Fields(0).Value)
    End If
    And this should work.
    Regards
    Libor.

  • Is it possible to get a virus or spyware on a iPad ?

My iPad II seems to have a virus. Notes have disappeared twice. Changes pages for no reason.
It it possible t get a virus o spyware?
    Thank you.

Not really.  If your ipad is jailbroken then maybe.  The ios operating system is partitioned and locked.
For issues with notes, what type of email account do you have setup on the device.  I ask this as some email accounts allow note syncing.  As note syncing with email accounts are done OTA, there could be an issue that causes them to disappear.  You can logging to your email account and most have a note section to verify if they are present.
I am not sure what you mean by changing pages.  Could you elaborate on that more?

  • "no primary partitions marked bootable" partition error

    Hey,
I tried Arch some time ago and liked it, then I became curious about other distribution and checked them out. Now, I'd like to return to Arch, but while installing, I had trouble partitioning my harddrives.
My whole sda is Windows, it's bootable and I don't want it to be touched.
On sdb ist looks something like this
    sdb? a bit free space
    sdb4 logically Windows
    sdb5 logically Linux Swap
    sdb6 logically Linux Swap
    sdb1 Primary Linux ext 3
    sdb3 Primary Linux ext3
I wanted to install the main sytem to sdb1, so I set the bootflag there. sdb3 is supposed to be my /home directory.
When I tried to write this, I got an error:
no primary partitions marked bootable. DOS MBR cannot boot this
What am I doing wrong? This problem didn't occur in the previous releases of Arch. Has it something to do with the 1024 cylinders boot limitation. I thought these times were over.
Can I solve this by setting the boot flag to the free space or the windows partition? Would that change anything on my windows partition?
I'm glad for any answer. I searched this forum, but couldn't find anything similar. Please help.

You can happily ignore this message, but it's still odd that you get it at all, since you have set sdb1 as bootable. How exactly did you plan to set up the boot mechanism for your system?

I found an old topic(http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=33916) on this problem but the solution was
try cfdisk -z /dev/device. However, this will wipe all your partitions.
I would like to keep my partitions as they are. Somebody suggested using testdisk for Windows to repair the bad partitions but I'm not sure of how to use it. Can anybody help me please? Thank you!

Are you still frustrated because of cfdisk which gives you something like this:
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 3: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder
Press any key to exit cfdisk
Here, I'm trying to install archlinux on a pendrive and I get almost the same error when trying to manually format the disk. The only difference is that it mention partition 0 instead of partition 3... I guess there is a bug in the livecd?
I'm having this problem with  archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso.

I am having problems installing Lion.  I have 2 partitions.  The larger, primary partition, and a smaller secondary partition.  Both have Snow Leopard installs (and up to date).  I can't get Lion to install on the primary partition.  The installer tells me that the primary partition can't be used to start up the computer (and I am currently running on that partition).
I ran disk utility, and still nothing.  Any thoughts?

I'm posting this for anybody else who might have a similar issue.  I installed lion on the secondary partition, booted from that install and ran disk utility again.  I again repaired the disk, this time doing the entire drive (think I had done only the partitions previously). Something was repaired in the partition table and all is fine now. I'm not certain wheth it was the new version of disk utility or the focus of my repair, but all is now well.
