  • Steep System Requirements for HD Video

Did anyone notice the system requirements for HD video in iTunes 8?
"Playing HD-quality videos purchased on the iTunes Store requires a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor"
and "Playing videos also requires at least 16MB of video RAM"
I'm not sure if the video RAM requirement would mean that any Mac with integrated graphics would be excluded or not.
On CPU requirements alone, my 1.83 GHz MBP and certainly my iMac G5 are excluded, but it also excludes the current base Mac Mini (often purchased as a media center) and either version of the MacBook Air.
I plan to experiment to see if an HD video I buy from iTunes will play smoothly on my MBP, but I'm a little confused as to why the requirements are so steep. My MBP certainly has the processing power to play HD video. It can play any of the HD trailers from Apple.

I have a 2.0 GHz Imac early 2006 with the original Core Duo. I'm buying 5 episodes from Eureka Season 3. I played a few minutes of the first one, and it seemed fine. It uses about 100% of one processor. Using 100% on a single processor system would be a big problem, because any minor peak would make it run out of juice. But 100% of one processor on a 2-core system should be fine as long as it's using both cores. At any rate, in a short test things looked fine.
If it's really using threads properly it looks to me like even the 1.83 GHz Core Duo might work.

  • DirectShow codec required for my Video Converter

I tried to transfer an .avi video to my V:M and it didn't let me, because the player doesn't support it, but it also says that the video converter is not able to convert it because it needs a DirectShow codec. How do I find this codec for the video converter? I already checked the version number of my converter and I have the latest one available for download here.

This is a common problem which I have experienced myself. It seems that direct show codecs are not always licensed by the video providers. I found this with content from 7 digital. Unfortunately I haven't found a solution to it yet, other than to record the video with screen capture software such as ZDsoft.

  • Minimum Hardware Requirement for AVCHD-Video & Final Cut Express 4

    Hey there,
I am currently searching for a computer to cut my private HDTV-Video (AVCHD format) and tend from rather buying a 4-core water-cooled Windows-PC to switch to a mobile apple solution.
Who knows which models of the current MacBook Pro - line are fast enough to handle AVCHD-Videomaterial in real-time? Is a 13inch 2,4GHZ Core 2 Duo fast enough, or the 2,66GHz version required, or even the 15inch with the better graphic card an issue?
    Thanks,
    Tom

You can edit AVCHD without to much of a problem on any Mac model. Most operations can be done realtime, though some it will be impossible to pull of in realtime. If you are using Final Cut, the operations that can be performed real-time are clearly indicated. Those that aren't realtime are typically things that go beyond basic composition.
For non-realtime manipulations, the speed is directly proportional to the CPU and bus speeds of the Mac.
When you export your finally rendered edits, however, that process can take time, depending on the nature of the transcoding and rendering involved. There's not much you can do about that. Even a dozen CPUs won't typically speed that up. However, there's hope that future versions of iMovie and Final Cut will support GPU-accelerated codecs that will improve that situation a lot.
That said, what's really important for video editing is: gobs of fast storage, and a really big display. Imagine that you are editing 1080i content. At full resolution, that's 1080x1920 pixels. If you're video editor is a typical NLE, you've got to accommodate the timeline window, the viewer, the canvas, and the clip library on screen all at once. In a pinch, you might be able to work with a tiny screen on the go (with the windows overlapping one another, or tabbing between them), but you're going to want to do most of your work using something with a LOT of pixels. AND, if you are doing it professionally, you're going to want to make sure that the displays are properly color-calibrated.

  • System PSU requirements for new Video Card

I need to know if my system can support a new video card (fx5600 or radeon 9600 up) considering that I only have 300 watts psu. What voltage railing and how much current does these cards use? I cannot find any technical specs for these cards so I cannot compute for the power requirements my system will need if I change video cards.

Given a 300watts PSU, I would not placed my bets on either cards as the Fans don't really eats up the powers, it's the CPU + RAM + Mobo + VGA that are the main power consumers!!!
Considering a recommendation for you to go with the current PSU you have, most probably a GF4 MX440 will max out every supplement there.

  • PC requirements for Desktop Video

Assuming its a 220k wmv 8 live event.
PC would have to WMV 8 codec but what is general rule for CPU and RAM.
Is there a customer facing doc?

Normally, a 220 kbps wmv, won't tax your computer CPU that much.
A video like this can be watched in almost any computer with a CPU higher than Pentium 2. It could actually play in a Pentium 2 depedning on how movement the video it self has.
As a general rule, I wouldn't care much about the computer CPU or RAM until the video code rate goes over 1 Mbps.

Hi, thanks for the reply, appreciated. I'm new to the x-fi software and not really sure of what options to have selected etc in the various modes for most effecti've sound. Would it be possible for you to tell me what you have selected for "game" mode especially and what in game sound options you use for Call of Duty 2? I would be very grateful if you could, thanks.
i use the following settings all the time:
in the creative console game mode, speakers set to 5., EAX effects off, CMSS 3D off, 24bit crystalizer on and set to 0%
in games i select always the highest EAX mode available, in case of COD2 that's EAX3

  • Bandwidth Requirement for VT advantage..

How much BW is required for a Video calls for g729 codec and g.711 calls.
Where to define the codec for video calls.
How to size the BW for calls over LAN as well as for WAN.

There is no g729 or g711 codec for video, it is wideband, h.263, etc. G729 and g711 are for audio calls only.
The VT Advantage video cameras support Wideband video codec, i.e., up to 8128 kbps, which if used is ofcourse recommended only with the same LAN, and H.263 video codec, i.e., from 128 kbps to 1.5 Mbps, over the WAN.
Codec for video calls are defined in System > Region but in terms of bandwidth (128kbps, 384kbps, etc in increments of 64kbps) and not the actual codec.
For connections over the WAN, 128 kbps is the minimum and considered low-quality video, and from 384kbps upwards considered high-quality video. However the actual bandwidth used on the WAN and the QoS configs would be the bit-rate + 20% overhead, which for a video call at 128 kbps would be 154 kbps and for a video call of 384kbps, would be 460 kbps. This bandwidth includes both video and audio channel of the video call.

    Hi Lionel,
As a general rule of thumb, the ATI Rage 128 Pro will not support a 20" LCD. That being said, there are reports of it doing just that (possibly the edition that went into the cube).
I'm not that familiar with the ins and outs of the Cube, so I can't give you authoritative information on it.

  • What are the ports required for the Audio, Video and A/V conferencing when the following end points are enabled for QoS in Lync 2013 server?

    Hi All,
What are the ports required for the Audio, Video and A/V conferencing when the following clients are enabled for QoS in Lync 2013 server?
    Client Type
Port range  and Protocol required for Audio
Port range and Protocol required for
    Video
Port range and Protocol required for
    A/Vconferencing
    Windows Desktop   Client
    Windows mobile App
    Iphone
    Ipad
    Andriod phone
    Andriod Tablet
    MAC desktop client
    Please advise. Many Thanks.

Out of the box, 1024-65535 for all of the client ports.  :)
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398833.aspx
You'll want to tune your client ports a bit
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204760.aspx as seen here, and then the client ports would use those ranges which is easier to set QoS markings.  I'm not sure the mobile clients respect that setting.
Elan's got the best writeup for Windows clients here:
    http://www.shudnow.net/2013/02/16/enabling-qos-for-lync-server-2013-and-various-clients-part-1/
However, the marking of the packets is the tricky part.  Windows can do it via Group Policy, but for the other clients you'll need to have the network specifically prioritize ports regardless of DSCP markings.  You have to do it based on ports
as the traffic could be peer to peer.

  • Video requirements for X-Fi 2

Does anybody know what the requirements are for a video to be playable on the X-Fi 2?
I ask because, although my new X-Fi 2 is apparently meant to play MP4s, Creative Centrale insists on converting them to WMVs. I've tried converting video files with WMVs using the excellent Super Converter program, using as similar a profile as possible, but again it insists on converting those too. And the conversion process is annoyingly long (5 minutes to do the same thing Super does in 20 seconds - this is 2.2ghz with 4gb memory, so it's not the PC).
I've tried simply dragging-and-dropping my files using windows, but then they don't show up in the player. So it seems the only way to put videos on is using Centrale, which given the slowness is very disappointing.

I tried Format Factory, Ulead Video Studio, Divx, Danuisoft, VirtualDubMod, DVDx, MediaCoder, AutoGordianKnot, and I forget what else, but the only thing that gave me usable results was Handbrake 0.9.3.
Make sure you install the Xvid codec first, then install Handbrake. The settings I use are:
    Picture Settings
    =========================
    Crop: Automatic
Width/Height: for most movies 480x272, for normal TV, use 640x480
Anamorphic: for most movies and TV use None - for widescreen? Anamorphic:Strict
    Video
    =========================
    Format: AVI File
    Video Codec: MPEG-4 (Xvid)
Framerate : same as source (or you could experiment)
    Avg Bitrate: 600
    Audio
    =========================
    Track:usually first English audio track
    Codec: MP3
    Mixdown: Stereo
    Samplerate: 44.
    Bitrate: 28
Sometimes you might need to do a test of the first 2% to be sure. For example, I encoded a movie (.78 as strict, and the X-Fi2 didn't even recognize it, so I just changed it to 480x272, and it worked. But strict is really good for widescreen (2.35.
I'd say this works about 80% of the time. Everything else I tried gave bad results, or didn't work at all.

  • Double Tapping for Widescreen video taking is no nonger required

For quite some time the only way to take widescreen video on an iphone was to turn it sideways of course then to dbl tap the screen to get 16x9 recording.
Now that is not the case at all and I have been wasting my time with my new phone dbl tapping away.  It is the only camera I have ever used that by default does not show you in the viewfinder what you are actually recording.  That is the only use to dbl tap is to see the actual preview. The ending result is the same.
Anyone have any ideas why the default view for widescreen video taking is not 16x9.  I do get one use and that is for Facetime but that usually is using the back lense.
My post is to let all those dbl tappers out there know that it is not required anymore with the 4s.  I simply did not know this until recently.

have tried to import from DVD since the video I ripped from the disc through Handbrake
Handbrake is absolutely the wrong tool to use for converting DVD footage to use for editing. It is designed to convert DVD-Video for viewing on other devices - NOT for editing.
Use MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD's VOB files to QuickTime DV/DVCPro, then import the resulting file into your FCP project.
