Is ACR 8.3 really clipping the camera's gamut?

I was wondering if anyone has noticed problems similar to observations posted at the DPreview micro-four-thirds forum.  The best post to the topic which seems to describe the problem best is by Timur Born.
Essentially, what is being observed are saturated colors (especially reds) that were once outside the sRGB /AdobeRGB gamut, now being inside the sRGB gamut (as evidenced by softproofing gamut warnings with respect to sRGB and AdobeRGB, as well as obvious color differences when DNG conversion is via 8.2 versus 8.3).  The observations are with respect to many of the newer Olympus cameras, and in this case the OMD E-M1 (which happens to be a camera I'm considering).  Is this affecting any other cameras?
Proper troubleshooting for knowing exactly where the problem lies is beyond me, but I do know this is not good news for E-M1 & Lr users.  Thoughts(?)

First of all: Thanks to Eric for chimming in and explaining the situation. Are the new profiles LUT based instead of matrix based now (and would that include the new Olympus picture mode profiles being LUT based)?
This is quite a *fundamental* change that should have been properly documented. Thus it would have spared us users the time and effort trying to find out what's going on. I remember another case where I found a change only documented in the *press release*, but not in the release notes. So please keep an eye on your release notes, especially if something changes as dramatical as the standard color profile.
I am surprised to learn that the old profiles could cause reds to be mapped outside of the already large PhotoRGB?! Is this what you mean by "clipping" intense colors? Saturated reds have been problematic in the past, so this improvement is generally very welcome. You should have published it as Beta, though, because there are several issues with the current implementation that may need further fine-tuning.
Some of my reds turn to rust/orange now. This is not only a problem of getting a starting point where reds look plain odd/wrong. This is a problem of the HSL picker identifying the same patch of my red wall as being *more* orange with the new E-M1 profile vs. the old E-M1 RC and E-M5 profiles. The latter means that I tested both cameras and all three profiles, using the HSL picker on the same point of my wall to pull down saturation. When red saturation reaches -100 then orange saturation reaches -68 with the new E-M1 profile, but only -54 with E-M1 RC and -55 with E-M5 (using an E-M5 image).
Same thing with only changing the Orange slider, it affects my red wall more with the new E-M1 profile than it did with the RC E-M1 and with the E-M5 profiles. On the other hand I noticed that my ocre (rather yellow) wall is affected *less* by the Orange slider now. So which profile do I trust more about the color of my wall and HSL slider behavior?
Just to mention it, personally I never implied that red is clipped to the sRGB primary. While it was reasonable to speculate this as one source of the issue I just observed and reported that the former over 50% out of gamut reds of my demonstration image are now almost completely (over 90%) within sRGB's red primary. And even while I understand why the new non-linearly compressed approach makes sense I still have my reservation about how it works in practice. An intense red wall should be shown as red, not rusty with clear orange tint.
PS to deejjjaaaa: Accusing other users of ill intent and pointing fingers while they only try to make sense of their working tools doesn't really help the discussion much. And using the camera calibration section to increase the red primary is *not* a solution, because it considerably affects saturation of yellow and orange, too.

  • Cannot see ACR 5.3 update in the Camera Profiles on CS4

I'm using CS4 on Windows Vista 64. I have tried the manual installation process multiple times before and after re installing CS4. I've tried the AUM with no results good or bad. I know there are two Camera Raw.8bi files that have to be installed in Vista 64 and I've been very careful to get both of the correct files to the correct destinations - I've gotten a lot of practice at this. There have been no error messages. One thing Bridge is doing now is that when I open an image, it opens it in Elements 7, which I upgraded from. When I close PSE7 and reopen the RAW file, it then opens in CS4. My big concern however is not seeing ACR 5.3 in my Camera Profiles. Any thoughts for a non-techie?

Robert, I am having a similar problem with Elements 6, in my case I have installed the 8BI file on my desktop, and I can see all the options Jim describes in camera profile My camera is Nikon, so those are the options I should get. But on my new laptop, all I get in camera profiles is ACR 4.4. I originally downloaded the most recent camera raw update to the laptop, but when that didn't work, I copied the 8BI file from the desktop to the laptop with a memory stick, and I still get the same results - no options. Camera raw on the laptop does recognize my camera, and lists it at the bottom of the preview screen, but it does not populate the options in camera profile.
I distrust the answer you got from FAQs, because my camera did not exist at the time ACR 4.4 was released, and it really does not explain why I can't get the same camera profile selections on the laptop as I do the desktop. Both are Dell, Vista 32. Both are PE 6. Both are the same camera, and now, the same 8BI file. And both show ACR 4.4, The 4.4 doesn't bother me, but I want the camera options on my laptop.

  • Should I modify the camera file to change the greyscale resolution of my Photonfocus camera from 8 to 12 bits?

I have some difficulties to use my Photonfocus camera with 12 bits greyscale resolution.
    I have a Photonfocus camera MV-D1024E-160-CL-12, a NI PCIe-1429 frame grabber, PFRemote 2.0 and Measurement & Automation Explorer 4.2.1.3001.
If I work with 8 bits greyscale resolution (PFRemote -> Data Output: Resolution : 8 bit) and look at the image with MAX (Système -> Périphériques et interfaces -> NI-IMAQ Devices -> img0: NI PCIe-1429 -> Channel 0: PhotonFocus MV-D1024-160 (file in attachment), everything is working.
Now I'd like to work with 12 bits and I don't know exactly what I have to change? I've tried to change only the resolution in PFRemote (PFRemote -> Data Output: Resolution : 12 bit) but then the image in MAX remains a 8 bit resolution. Then I've tried also to modify the camera file (file in attachment). I've put the "BitDepth" and the "BitsPerComponent" at 12 instead of 8 and the "BinaryThreshold" to (0,4095). But when trying to grab an image in MAX, an error occured: "Error 0xBFF600FE Le nombre de bits par pixel requis est invalide".
Should I really modify the camera file in order to grab 12 bits images? Or what should I do?
    Thank you

    PhotonFocus MV-D1024-160.txt ‏5 KB

    Hi toto26,
Thank you very much for the information. I did exactly the same thing as you suggested for 8-bit, and I were able to change the resolution (number of pixels), exposure time, frame rate without any problem. I understand that I need to coordinate the MAX icd file and the settings of PFRemote.
When I tried to switch to 12-bit, I found that I need the camera file (.icd) for 12-bit. I tried the attached icd in the previous discussion (Photonfocus MV-D1024E-160-CL-12 12-bit 1429 X4 only.zip 2 KB). There was an IMAX Error: Error 0xBFF6002C, FIFO overflow caused acquisition to halt. Then I think maybe this camera file is not good for me because I have a PCIe-1427, instead of a PCIe-1429.
So, I downloaded the camera file generator (from the same link you suggested) to create my own camera file. When I run the generator, the first window popped out was for camera setting, and there was no Photonfocus in the choice for the Manufacturer. Is it true that I cannot create camera files for Photonfocus camera, or I simply don't know how to use the generator?
Thanks again for the help and I look forward to more advices.

  • Sun light affects the camera sensor?

    Hi
I have a lumia 1520 and once driving, my phone's camera was exposed to sun light for about 5 hrs as i put it on my car's dashboard.
after then when i take a photo i feel my images got worse in quality and color.
Am i suspicious or sun light really affects the camera sensor?

Hi, AmirTofighi. Any chance you can attach sample photos? The sunlight should not affect the camera sensor AFAIK. However, we like to further check on this since you have laid the scenario.
BTW, if this is using the built-in camera app, try using lens app and compare. Also, if you have a friend who is using the same model of the device, it would not hurt to check and compare the images taken on both devices.
Hope to hear from you soon. :-)

  • Have A Really Shaky Clip-Smooth Cam Or Something Else?

Have used Shake a couple of times for smoothing out shots(Still am in awe how well Shake works). But, in this instance, after doing a render flip, the black areas are taking up to a third or more of the x or y axis. When working frame by frame, the clip is becoming blurry from all the adjusting, using scale node. Hope this made some sense. I have the translation at 2.5, same for rotation. Shake 4.1.1, 10.5.8. Any help is appreciated.

I would try using lower values for translationSmooth and rotationSmooth,
and just accepting some camera shake.
Shaky camera footage includes motion blur from the shaking.
Smoothing out the camera motion doesn't smooth out the motion blur,
and it ends up looking really bizarre.
By just accepting some camera shake--maybe editing accordingly--
the motion blur will make sense. You'll also have less black,
so you won't have to scale as much.

What on earth is happening? I am on PS CS6. I might point out everything was working normally up to  yesterday, when this first started.
I recently changed computer to 64bit from 32bit, not sure if this causing  the problem or not. Any help would be appreciated.

    Robert,
Would you be so kind to rephrase your question with concise, precise information and without any "let's say that" hypotheticals?  Sorry, I can't quite follow you.
Also please give exact versions of Photoshop CS6 (13.what.what), of Bridge and of your OS.
    Thanks.

  • Import failed the following clip encountered an error during import and is still referencing media on the camera

This is one of the many error windows I'm getting.  This MVI_9935 is from 5DMIII.  But I'm also getting the same errors for other files with the exact same error message for Panasonic AF100.  All shot at 23.976fps.
    * 5D is h.264. They're all about the maximum lengths (of ~30 minutes).
    * Panasonic footage is AVCHD wrapped MTS files.  Two clips of this kind are about 75 minutes long each.
I have dealt with this problem by doing ALL of the steps I've read so far for each shoot and it takes too long... I'm doing
    1) making FCPX archives
    2) copying the all of the contents from each card (with the file structure intact) and pasting them onto an external hard drive (eSATA with 3TB space... with a plenty of empty space ~ 1TB)
    3) copying and pasting just the video files onto an internal hard drive (separate from the system drive but same as where the project files are)
And I click through each error window (which takes about a full working day or more) and then when I _still_ see missing footage indicated by
that little "video camera" icon on the bottom left (as you can see above).  What I do at this point is to:
    1) re-import from one of the FCPX Archives, and if this does not work, I
    2) re-import from one of the directly copied files.
Sometimes, I need to create a new event and re-import if the clip is still **referencing** the media on the camera.
I did not have this problem **before** FCPX's import window combined both spanned clips and individual files (circa version 10.0.5 or 10.0.6).
Now I have an Evernote notebook dedicated this problem and just from Google Searching, I have gathered 7 notes from different discussion forums dealindg with the same issue.
Some things that are common to us who are having problems:
    1) we deal with big files (for long shoots)
    2) we either use Canon 5DMIII or mix and match different types of codecs / wrappers.
    3) we end up wasting so much time because Apple support is not paying attention.
    4) or maybe we don't know how to get support from Apple.  I know this isn't a forum where an Apple employee checks.  Where can we directly contact Apple about this?

For the 5D clips, copy ONLY the .mov files into a folder on your external drive or wherever else you want to put them and import from there. You can safely ignore the .thm files and other stuff. Pretty easy and you also will have an archive of your clips. For the Panasonic files, copy ALL the contents of the card and use import from camera.
If you want to import from the card to an event - with the 5D at least - you can use a card reader. Don't use the camera itself. It does work but it is slow and cumbersome and card readers are cheap.
Create an event, hit import from camera and the card should show up.
Sorry, not familiar with the Panasonics but some of the other guys at work use P2 cards and I have imported from them a couple of times with no problem using both a P2 card reader and importing directly from the camera via firewire.
I use the previously mentioned method with all my Canon files - 5D2, 5D3, 60D and 7D - and have never had a single problem.
    Hope this helps.

I have been using the new version of ACR with PS6 and have been able to open the D750 files, now I'm stuck.

You were probably using the Release Candidate version of camera raw 8.7, which one gets from Adobe Labs.

  • HT4640 Adding a video clip to a keynote presentation - do I have to keep the original video on the camera roll?

I have several keynote presentations that are missing their video clips.  Does the original video clip need to stay on the camera roll after you embed it in the presentation?  I thought not, because when you add a video, a message comes up saying "compressing video" before it gets added.  That made me think that a special compressed version of the original video is made and saved along with the presentation.  I've tried testing this by creating a new presentation, adding a video clip to it and then deleting the original video from the camera roll and the video clip in the presentation was not affected.  You'd think if the clip were linked to a presentation, that iOS would warn you before you delete it from the camera roll.  But I can't think of any other reason why the clips would suddenly be missing from all my keynote presentations.

You can do this with iMovie '06, but not with iMovie '08. You should have iMovie '06 still on your hard disk if you upgraded from iLife '06, or you can download it for free from Apple. Under Editing -> Video Effects, you will find the Fast/Slow/Reverse effect that will do this.

I created a photo album on my iPhone 4s - edited photos etc. but I cannot figure out how to transfer it to my pc (using Windows 8).  The only folder in the iphone drive is the one which has the Camera roll photos Help please - I really need the photos!

The camera roll is not part of the sync process at all.
You should be importing these photos to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.  Youc an organize them on your computer and sync the to the iphone if you wish.
The photos sync from the computer to the iphone is one way.
The iphone mirrors the selected content of the computer to which it is synced.

  • ACR 3.7 not available in the Camera Calibration Profile

On a Mac G5 in the Develop module>Camera Calibration panel the only Profile that shows up is ACR 3.6. I have Camera Raw 3.7 installed in Library>Application Support>Adobe> Plug-Ins>CS2>File Formats>Camera Raw.plugin.
I have a new camera that is supported only by 3.7. Any ideas why this isn't available in the menu?

Yes. Because that only tells you WHEN your camera were profiled.
I think mine say 2.4 or something like that.
If your camera has been reprofiled you may have the option to use a older version in that menu.
For the record, LR doesn't care if you upgrade Camera Raw or not. LR is somewhat based on Camera Raw but is a completely separate app.

  • Why do i getThe following clip encountered an error during import and is still referencing media on the camera:

When importing in FCPX 10.1.3 I get: The following clip encountered an error during import and is still referencing media on the camera:  ??? anyone

I get this sometimes too, when importing from P2 cards.  Sometimes it takes me a few tries to get it imported.  I have noticed that it seems to work better when I actually mark an IN and Out for the clip, but that's not totally a solution.

  • Message: The following clip encountered an error during import and is still referencing media on the camera:

I am getting this message when I try to import files from Canon C100: The following clip encountered an error during import and is still referencing media on the camera:
These are AVCHD files and it seems to be happening randomly.  With different clips as I try to import...happening both with regular importing and with Create Optimized Media...
It just started happening yesterday-never had this problem before and have uploaded countless times with this camera and system. THanks.

Update: OK, I just tried to import the footage into another hard drive (an internal hard drive) and it seems to be going fine now.  Maybe something is corrupted on the external hard drive I was importing into...wierd.

  • My IPhone 5C takes very dark pictures even in bright noon sunshine, I'm really disappointed as the camera was a big reason I chose it. Anyone else experiencing difficulties ?

I picked up a new IPhone 5C. The camera seems poor, my pictures are extremely dark even in bright, sunny conditions. I tried using the flash but it actually does very little. I wondered if anyone else has encountered this problem.

On top of all this, I can't even find out how to file a complaint with anyone higher up than Customer Service.
I hate to tell you this, but you didn't write an email. You wrote a discussion post on the Verizon Wireless Community forum which is a public peer to peer forum. Unfortunately since you didn't mark your post as a question, the VZW reps that roam this community won't ever see your post. Before you re-post it, don't. Duplicate posts get removed from the community.
I see there were several missteps both by the reps and yourself in your post. First you should have insisted on returning the phone within the 14 day return policy period. Second which Samsung Galaxy mini model did you purchase? The S3 mini or the S4 mini? Did you do any research prior to deciding on this device. The reps at that time deflected the easiest course of action, by trying to get you to replace the phone under insurance instead of returning the phone. The Early Edge payment option requires the current phone on the line using the early Edge must be returned to Verizon Wireless. Did you once considered going to a third party site like Swappa to purchase a gently used device for your daughter?
