Is adding /usr/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf.d/00-system.conf a bad idea?

I recently noticed I was using AMD's libOpenCL (the ICD) because its path was being injected through the ld.so.conf.d configuration files.
I had installed another ICD, and was expecting to use the libOpenCL.so from /usr/lib, but I wasn't, so I created a file /etc/ld.so.conf.d/00-system.conf with a single line: /usr/lib, so that system libraries are used first.
Is this a bad idea in general and does this break anything? I know I'm relying on Arch to provide the latest (hopefully ABI backwards compatible) version of all libraries, but this shouldn't really be a problem, right?

The following is said in the manpage of 'ldconfig':
ldconfig  creates  the  necessary links and cache to the most recent shared libraries found in the directories specified on the command line, in the file /etc/ld.so.conf, and in the trusted directories (/lib and /usr/lib).
The way I see it, these directories are automatically considered.
Edit: Ups, ebal was faster.

  • Why are systemd startup scripts under /usr/lib and not /etc? [SOLVED]

    Just out of curiosity: why are systemd configuration files (startup scripts, or whatever they are called) in /usr/lib/systemd/system/ and not somewhere under /etc?
    After all, they are configuration files and not libraries.
    It may simply be my lack of knowledge of the standard linux filesystem layout, so please enlighten me.

  • [SOLVED] systemd uses cronie.service in /usr/lib instead of /etc

    I've been having a little problem getting systemd to use my custom service file for cronie. I've tried doing the same thing with ntpd and a few other services, and they all work fine.
    [root@garrett garrett]# cp /{usr/lib,etc}/systemd/system/cronie.service
    [root@garrett garrett]# systemctl reenable cronie.service
    rm '/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/cronie.service'
    ln -s '/etc/systemd/system/cronie.service' '/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/cronie.service'
    [root@garrett garrett]# systemctl status cronie.service
    cronie.service - Periodic Command Scheduler
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/cronie.service; enabled)
    Active: inactive (dead)
    CGroup: name=systemd:/system/cronie.service
    Sep 13 21:32:52 garrett /usr/sbin/crond[622]: (CRON) INFO (running with inotify support)
    It appears to have something to do with the crond.service symlink to cronie.service, since when I remove it, systemd will use the service file in /etc.
    [root@garrett garrett]# rm /usr/lib/systemd/system/crond.service
    [root@garrett garrett]# cp /{usr/lib,etc}/systemd/system/cronie.service
    [root@garrett garrett]# systemctl reenable cronie.service
    rm '/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/cronie.service'
    ln -s '/etc/systemd/system/cronie.service' '/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/cronie.service'
    [root@garrett garrett]# systemctl status cronie.service
    cronie.service - Periodic Command Scheduler
    Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/cronie.service; enabled)
    Active: inactive (dead)
    CGroup: name=systemd:/system/cronie.service
    Sep 13 21:32:52 garrett /usr/sbin/crond[622]: (CRON) INFO (running with inotify support)
    However, these symlinks don't cause problems in other packages such as with cups.service, which has a symlink cupsd.service. I also tried the same commands above on another arch computer I have that is running systemd and encountered the same results. This just seems really strange, and I'm not exactly sure where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Anyone had such problems before? Just don't tell me this cursed device demands a sacrifice from freshly produced virgin paper sheets to chew on.
    Other non-pdf documents print succesfully.

    just got hit with thie same error on my canon printer, and I was told I should try reinstalling the printer (not sure if that's meant for the driver or the actual printer in CUPS, but I intend to try both...

  • Printer Paused - "/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed" [SOLVED]

    Nothing that I try to print with CUPS goes to the printer, it just sits in the job list saying "Pending".
    CUPS says the status of my printer is:
    Paused - "/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed"
    Restarting CUPS or DBus does nothing.
    I didn't notice any updates relating to CUPS so am not sure what exactly happened. I sync and update many times a day, so at least I know a timeframe. The last time I printed something was at:
    Sat 21 Nov 2009 03:05:18 PM PST
    Now nothing works. I really need to get this working, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    EDIT2:
    Near as I can tell it is not indeed a package update problem, sorry. I suppose this is in the wrong forum now.
    Here is my /var/log/cups/error-log

    Anyone else who gets this problem and freaks out: All you have to do is go to the CUPS printer administration page and click "Resume Printer".

    I am having this same issue but simply resuming the printer won't change anything....
    I always see this message when I try printing ....
    "/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed"
    but if I just call it from the command line, it shows me my printer info...
    [somekool@rockinTV test]$ /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp
    direct hp:/usb/deskjet_5550?serial=MY27G1J3CK2L "HP deskjet 5550" "HP deskjet 5550 USB MY27G1J3CK2L HPLIP" "MFG:hp;MDL:deskjet 5550;CLS:PRINTER;DES:deskjet 5550;SN:MY27G1J3CK2L;"
    [somekool@rockinTV test]$
    by looking further... I found two more error message...
    "io/hpmud/musb.c 136: unable get_string_descriptor -1: Operation not permitted"
    and
    prnt/backend/hp.c 745: ERROR: open device failed stat=12: hp:/usb/deskjet_5550?serial=MY27G1J3CK2L

  • Binfmt.d & /usr/lib/binfmt.d/mono.conf - dangerous ?

    copied from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 8#p1453898 as i felt this issue is better discussed in a separate thread.
    Raynman wrote:The mono package provides /usr/lib/binfmt.d/mono.conf. That makes it possible to put the binary in /usr/bin with the executable bit set. I don't see why that would be such a bad idea.
    <snip>
    Let's look inside /usr/lib/binfmt.d/mono.conf
    :CLR:M::MZ::/usr/bin/mono:
    the description for conf files in binfmt.d/ folders is in the kernel sources, Documentation/binfmt_misc.txt  .
    entries follow this format :name:type:offset:magic:mask:interpreter:flags
    applying that to mono.conf :
    name = CLR
    type = M , shell will use magic numbers to determine executable, not extension
    offset = empty, defaults to 0
    magic = MZ   that magic number corresponds with windows executables
    mask : empty , defaults to 0xff
    interpreter = /usr/bin/mono
    flags = optional
    The effect of using mono.conf is that any file with the executionable bit set and the magic bytes for a windows executable will be executed by mono .
    mono is crossplatform and mono executables will run both on windows and linux.
    A hypothetical example :
    a malevolent person creates a malware program foo using mono , gives it a name that will make people want to download / run it
    To make things easier for *nix users, they offer it as a tar.xz, with the executable bit set for foo.exe
    linux user downloads and tries to run it.
    if /usr/lib/mono.conf was present on that system before last boot, linux will execute foo.exe and the linux system now has malware installed.
    incase /usr/lib/binfmt.d/mono.conf is not present (or disabled) , nothing happens.

    TL:DR : falconindy has several valid points, but IN MY OPINION the inclusion of /usr/lib/binfmt.d/mono.conf is a security risk.
    It should not be enabled by default.
    falconindy wrote:
    Lone_Wolf wrote:it's ELF vs MZ binary format .
    No, it isn't -- the mono compiler doesn't produce machine code. The windows native binary format PE or COFF.  Mono and other C# compilers produce bytecode known as CLR (Common Language Runtime). The MZ magic number you're referring to is in fact a carryover from older DOS binaries, but you aren't going to produce that format from a mono compiler.
    I don't know  what type of binaries mono produces,  but if they're not detected by linux as MZ binaries, the supplied mono.conf won't work as intended.
    The same goes for PE / COFF / CLR : if they are detected as having the MZ magic number, they will be executed by mono when /usr/lib/binfmt.d/mono.conf is present.

    Lone_Wolf wrote:Afaict all those compilers you mention compile to a linux-native ELF-format binary , and we can't block that and still have a working system.
    I mentioned javac which is a bytecode compiler.
    javac bytecode doesn't appear to be executable by the linux kernel, and the arch java packages don't come with a binfmt.d file .
    falconindy wrote:The fact that you can't "block" ELF means that ELF is by far a better choice for malware than any other option.
    correct.

    Lone_Wolf wrote:In my opinion any file in a binfmt.d/ default folder ( /etc/binfmt.d , /usr/lib/binmft.d , /run/binfmt.d ) that's added by an automatic process enlarges the potential attack surface against *nix systems by a big factor.
    You're still avoiding my question. Why is a mono program more suspicious than an ELF binary when ELF is the universal Linux format? Are you simply equating Windows to malware?
    i've worked as a windows sysadmin for over 8 years (desktop and server support) , privately helped windows users for 2 decades and had to solve many malware problems.
    Well-configured windows systems can be very safe, unfortunately in my experience those are a small minority.
    It's defintely possible i overreact wrt windows malware.

    Lone_Wolf wrote:Mono upstream / AL devs / pacman decrease my system security without even NOTIFYING me.
    So, you're annoyed that you installed Mono, and now Mono programs Just Work™? I'd say that you could just mask the binfmt service, but you make it very clear that you aren't running systemd. You're on your own.
    I don't have mono installed, was just worried about a security issue.
    As for being part of a very small minority of arch linux users because i prefer another init then systemd :  i'm used to that, arch still has many advantages over all other distros that's why i stay.
    binfmt.d doesn't come from systemd, but from the kernel .
    It's man page lists a simple solution to override /usr/lib/binfmt.d files, no need to mask anything.
    falconindy wrote:Also note that your malicious binary in /usr/bin could just as easily be a shell script which calls "mono /path/to/my/malware" (or replace "mono" with "python", "ruby", or some rogue ld.so).
    correct, but those methods don't open up my system to a large number of unknown binaries.

  • [solved] netctl (/usr/lib/network/network) fails at boot, sometimes

    Hi,
    Since I reinstalled a new HD in my old laptop (8 years old) I have a problem with my netctl-profile: in about 1 in 4 boots the wireless does not connect. I appreciate it if someone could take a look at what happens, because I cannot seem to find the cause because the logs and errors do not give much information.
    Some general info:
    1) Wireless interface is wlan0; I turned off dynamic naming of systemd/udev. Network driver is RT2500pci.
    2) I use an old kernel version, 3.3.8, because any newer version effectively hard blocks the radio signal without any possibility to change this (rfkill etc).
    3) The power saving option of the network interface must be off. An udev rule does this effectively.
    4) The ip link of the wireless interface must be off before netctl can start the network profile.
    5) When the connection fails, I enter "ip link set wlan0 down" and then start the network profile by entering "netctl start Sorryvoordehobo". This *always* works.
    The following logs and outputs perhaps give information about the issue. Particularly the last might be helpful, because it shows that some authentication indeed takes place, but there is no network.
    netctl profile:

    I don't think there is anything wrong with the kernel. Note that with the previous HD everything started perfectly, with the same kernel version. The new HD is a lot faster as it is an SSD; maybe this has anything to do with the issue?
    To continue: the connection always works when I manually enter "ip link set wlan0 down" and then start netctl. I figured that I should execute this command before netctl starts, but I cannot seem to get this to work. What I tried is to edit /etc/systemd/system/netctl.service, by entering this command with the options ExecStartPre and ExecStartPost (see the two commented lines):
    [Unit]
    Description=(Re)store the netctl profile state
    Before=network.target
    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    RemainAfterExit=yes
    #ExecStartPre=-/usr/bin/ip link set wlan0 down
    ExecStart=-/usr/bin/netctl restore
    #ExecStartPost=-/usr/bin/ip link set wlan0 down
    ExecStop=/usr/bin/netctl store
    KillMode=none
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    Nevertheless, with either of these lines uncommented I get boots without the netctl-profile starting.
    In the original post I did not give the output of ip link. So here it is:
    1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT
    group default
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
    2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN mode DEFAULT group
    default qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:40:45:25:dc:4b brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    3: wlan0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP mode DORM
    ANT group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:13:d3:6c:f3:78 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    To conclude: authentication succeeds (see the output of dmesg), but I do not seem to get an IP-address (see above). But I have no idea why, and the error messages are not very clear.
    I am still figuring out what happens here, but maybe somebody knows what goes wrong here? Thanks!

  • [SLVD] force using /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions/libglx.so

    Latest versions of catalyst bring powerXpress support - it means that we can now switch between discreet AMD gfx driver and integrated intel gfx driver (and maybe also switch between catalyst and ati oss driver).
    I'm working on it now, unfortunatelly it's not that easy to implement in a right way in Arch. There's no way without doing some ugly tricks (like creating /usr/X11R6 dir). Although i must say that i almost succeeded.
    Yes, i know that /usr/X11R6/lib is obsolete and not supported by Arch, but i must to place catalyst's libGL.so somewhere so it wouldn't conflict with libgl's libGL.so (+ more important is to be able to update libgl package without problems), and that directory is looking good.
    Basically this whole powerXpress suport = linking libGL and libglx libraries into right place. Let me show you some functions:
    switching libGL:
    function switch_to_amd() {
    ln -snf /usr/X11R6/lib/fglrx/fglrx-libGL.so.1.2 \
    /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2
    ln -snf libGL.so.1.2 /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1
    ln -snf libGL.so.1 /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so
    ldconfig /usr/X11R6/lib
    function switch_to_intel() {
    ln -snf /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2 \
    /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2
    ln -snf libGL.so.1.2 /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1
    ln -snf libGL.so.1 /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so
    ldconfig /usr/X11R6/lib
    switching libglx:
    function switch_to_amd() {
    ln -snf /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions/fglrx/fglrx-libglx.so \
    /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions/libglx.so
    function switch_to_intel() {
    ln -snf /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so \
    /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions/libglx.so
    I've created /etc/ld.so.conf.d/catalyst.conf with:
    /usr/X11R6/lib
    inside. I've also added /usr/X11R6/lib into PATH in /etc/profile in 1st place (just in case).
    And it's working fine (i mean catalyst is working fine) untill i will install libgl (so it's not fine)... After restart, when running X server screen goes blank and i cannot do anything (even when it's switched to amd). /var/log/Xorg.0.log looks fine, no errors, it's longer than usuall with those lines:

    [ 2515.962] (II) fglrx(0): Interrupt handler Shutdown.
    but it doesn't look relevant.
    I don't know is it:
    - /usr/X11R6/lib that is chosen after /usr/lib
    - OR /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions/ that is chosen after /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/  - i though that updates should be taken in 1st place by default
    Maybe both of them?
    Right now i'm thinking that this is the problem of /usr/X11R6/lib that need to be taken before /usr/lib, so my question is same as the question in topic of this post.
    I will really appreciate any help.
    Btw: there's only one file in /usr/X11R6/lib : /usr/X11R6/lib/fglrx/fglrx-libGL.so.1.2
    + there's only one file in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions : /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions/fglrx/fglrx-libglx.so
    I took this whole solution and scripts from SUSE (AMD's solution is really ugly). SUSE also doesn't like /usr/X11R6/lib, but they used it and there it seems to work. I mean i don't have SUSE, i just see their catalyst packaging script.

    've installed libgl, then removed /usr/lib/libGL.so* and problem persist. Then i reinstalled libgl, and removed /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so - it was working fine...
    This may be because of  a fallback option that if libglx.so is not found , xorg uses libglx.xorg .
    But libglx.so owned by catalyst (/usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions/libglx.so) should be found, and is found if only libglx.so owned by libgl (/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so) is not present. And if the last one is absent i can see in Xorg.0.log that xserver/catalyst is using that one placed in updates dir, not libglx.xorg.
    Now i removed libgl, and removed /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions/libglx.so, so catalyst should got troubles, restart X and same problem: blank screen with only one char sign on top left corner: _
    So obviously catalyst need that /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions/libglx.so
    I just don't know how to force using /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions directory over /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions dir...
    Maybe i need something like LD_PRELOAD or something.
    This maybe not clear but what i'm trying to reach right now is to get catalyst working when libgl package is present, cuz it's looking like good begining.
    Lone_Wolf wrote:It does look like xorg doesn't entirely folllow ldconfig / symbolic links , so i'm inclined to suggest to keep things as simple as possible and change only what's really necessary .
    Ofcourse, i also don't like this whole /usr/X11R6/lib thing. Hell no, i even don't got intel gfx , i'm only trying to implement something that can be usefull for others.
    And since SUSE know how to use /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates/extensions directory over /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions i'm sure it's also possible in Arch. Maybe the right and only way is to change something in xserver compilation, i don't know. Right now i'm trying to do this in "easier" way.
    Lone_Wolf wrote:
    As your libraries have different names as the mesa ones :
    place fglrx-libGL.so.1.2 in /usr/lib
    put fglrx-libglx.so in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions
    for libgl only change the symbolic link just above the binary :  /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
    for libglx change /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
    That ofcourse should work - since it will link to proper libs.
    But it's not what i'm trying to reach : catalyst and libgl installed without conflicts.
    Lone_Wolf wrote:If that works, you'll atleast know the switch is possible.
    Just a mention: this whole linking thing isn't anything new, it was used by linux users for long time so such switch is possible (as i can see they used to use such linking as you suggested but imho it's bad way - it should to be done without pacman's conflicts), now ati is just trying to implement it by default.
    This powerXpress support is still in developement, although i can see what way ati picked up, i'm trying to follow it and i'm pretty sure that it will work if i will follow it. The sooner - the better.

    What is this supposed to mean? Should I ignore it?

    On closer inspection, there are many more warnings there. Like:

    libtool: warning: relinking 'libgvfsdbus.la'

  • How to fix CUPS corrupted (Dyld Error Message:   Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libcups.2.dylib)?

    Hello,
    After trying to change my printer settings on CUPS administrator area to allow to share my wirelless printer to my VirtualBox environment (somehow virtualbox doesn't detect my wirelless printer) I notice that this area stop to work. After it I try to update  the CUPS by installing a new version. I admint that I am a newby in unix environment and I downloaded the  CUPS v1.6.1 and installed through the terminal,
    ./configure
    sudo make
    make install
    After restarting apple site no longer opened like also my home page. Other programs also stopped working and always warn about the same error described bellow. I posted my last try which was reinstall my system Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.8). Does anyone deal with this problem before? How can I reinstall at least the operation system or just fixing this library will solve the problem?
    Note: The reason of using virtualbox is that I need to use a prescribed software that only works in windows environment and since I need to make work in other places the wireless printing is the only viable way to do this.

    Here is another option.
    I had the same problem with my Mac OSX System 10.8.4 after update cups from 1.6.2 to 1.6.3.
    I have a MacBookPro with the same system version and copy the libcups.2.dylib file form /usr/lib/ then replace the error file in my other Mac.
    1. Install cups 1.6.2 again
    2. Replace the file libcups.2.dylib in /usr/lib/ directory with this one libcups.2.dylib
    Note: I added the link if you dont have an other mac in the same version available.
    This works for me.

    Anyone can help me tracing in which package the missing file is located (if it's not in compiz-core)?
    Last edited by dexgeh (2012-10-16 17:58:39)

    I managed to solve the issue commenting the --indirect-rendering flag and installing and launching driconf to create a default ~/.drirc file.
    I just noticed that in the same upgrade I got intel-dri from 8.x to 9.x version, maybe it's related.
    Launching a terminal in .xinitrc and manually launching
    LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose compiz --debug --replace ccp
    show me a lot of errors, but it's working, and I don't need anymore the --indirect-rendering flag (in the past I put that flag in the command because of the bad performance that compiz had without).

  • "Permissions Differ on "usr/lib/ruby" ?!

    I'm using Leopard. After a recent startup problem with a Macbook I ran Disk Utilities, Verify Disk Permissions, and got the following message:
    "Permissions differ on "usr/lib/ruby", should be lrwxr-xr-x, they are drwxr-xr-x."
    1) What does this mean?
    2) Is it a serious security issue (i.e. malware)?
    3) What do I do about it?
    Thanks

    "If you use the menu item "Go" and select the "Go to folder..." option, you can type in:
    /usr/lib
    and check to see if ruby is an alias or an actual folder. It should appear as an alias in the Finder,"
    ============================================================================
    Ok, did that so I'll give you an long list of stuff I found, if you have the patience to go through it all.
    Finder > Go > Go to folder > /usr/lib. There are 4 Ruby aliases (with arrow symbol) there: "libruby.1.dylib" , "libsvnswigruby-1.dylib" , "libsvnswigruby-1.0.dylib" and "libsvnswigruby-1.0.0.0.dylib".
    AND, yes, there is also an ACTUAL RUBY FOLDER (blue, no arrow) in usr/lib.
    This Ruby folder breaks down into the following subfolders: (Finder>Library>)Ruby Folder (blue)> site_ruby > 1.8 > osx and powerpc-darwin 8.0 (two folders). In this "osx" folder there are 9 .rb files called active_record.rb, addressbook.rb, appkit.rb, cocoa.rb, coredate.rb, foundation.rb, NMOSXDockHelper.rb, qtkit.rb and webkit.rb. In the powerpc-darwin8.0 folder is a rubycocoa.bundle icon (like a lego brick).
    The followinig actual folders (blue, no arrow)) are also present in usr/lib: dtrace, groff, java, mecab, openmpi, pam, php, pkgconfig, podcastproducer, sa, samba, sas12, sqlite3, system, and zsh.
    =================================================================
    "and the original folder is supposed to be in
    "/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby"
    You might also check that location to see if the ruby folder is there."
    ==============================================================================
    Yes, it's also in this location. There are 2 main Ruby folders (blue, nop arrow) in System/ Library/Frameworks: one called 'RubyCocoa.framework', the other Ruby.framework. Ruby.framework > 1.8 > usr > (here there are three more folders 'bin' , 'lib' and 'share') lib > ruby. Here, in this ruby folder are aliases (site_ruby' and 'user_gems' as well as actual folders called 'gems' and 1.8. In 1.8 there are further subfolders named bigdecimal, cgi, date, digest and such which are NOT in the Ruby folder in usr/lib.
    ============================================================================
    I have no idea whether anything in the Mac OS actually uses ruby stuff or not. Ruby is a programming language, and Ruby on Rails is used in web development.

    By the way, I performed the Safari 3.1 update, Garageband Update 4.1.2 , iPhoto Update 7.1.2 , and Airport Utility 5.3.1 update two days before this all happened. I rebooted after the updates were fully installed, used the macbook (starting and rebooting 2 or 3 times duringthe course of the day, after which everything seemed fine). Two days later when I tried to start the Macbook I got a very long blue screen (in excess of 7-8 minutes) and had to try starting several times before I could log on. Then I ran the disk utility and got the Ruby permissions message. I've performed all the disk repair stuff and the message remains.
    I searched the Internet and could find no other examples of this happening. So, questions remain:
    1. Is there ANY possible way this could be malware, spyware, etc.?
    2. Any ideas as to how this change could have happened on my system?
    Thanks!

  • Itunes won't start up - can't find usr/lib/libstdc++.6.dylib

    Hi,
    I had to reinstall the OS 10.3.9 on my ti-book. I did an archive and install, but now iTunes won't start up. Console says it can't find this dynamic library:
    usr/lib/libstdc++.6.dylib
    Since I have a lot of my songs in my personal lib on this machine, and podcast susbscriptions, etc - I don't want to lose them if possible.
    Is there a way to just install this lib, or will I have to reinstall iTunes altogheter?
    I searched for the above file, but can't find it on the disk.
    thx.
    'mark

    Do you have any iTunes plugins? You may want to get rid of them and try again.
    Also, have you tried removing the corresponding com.apple.itunes.plist files from <youraccount>/Library/Preferences, logging out, logging back in again (or rebooting) and then relaunching iTunes? I don't think an archive and install will refresh this file for you. Nor will reinstalling iTunes.

    In short, I found the missing file (libc.so) and I tried to create a simbolic link to it in the path rpm was asking (/usr/lib). In my system I found 2 (32 and 64 version). I tried both, I mean to link /usr/lib/libc.so to 64 version (as you can see in the console). It did not work. Then I did rm and ln -s to the 32 version of it but same result.
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance.
    Felipe

    You have probably compat-glibc installed but your are missing glibc-devel package, which contains object files for development using standard C libraries.
    I'm haven't tried it under RHEL, but it should work to setup the Oracle public yum repository, which will allow you to use e.g. yum install oracle-validated. This method will automatically fetch dependent packages. More info at: http://public-yum.oracle.com/

  • Symbol lookup error /usr/lib/libXi.so.6

    Dear All,
    After a recent update, I have problems with libXi. I get the following error while trying to plot something with gnuplot:
    gnuplot: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libXi.so.6: undefined symbol: XESetWireToEventCookie.
    I get a similar error when trying to run a java application:
    java: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libXi.so.6: undefined symbol: XESetWireToEventCookie
    Something looks broken. I tried downgrading libXi to the previous version 1.3.2-1:
    pacman -U libxi-1.3.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
    but that didn't help. I'm now back on version 1.4.0-1
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. This is my first post to this forum so bare with me. I've been a gentoo user for quite sometime but I'm trying a binary distro for obvious reasons.
    This also looks like a bug for I haven't done anything strange. This is a newish installation and all I do every week or so is pacman -Syu as suggested in the beginner handbook. I'm surprised no one else has posted this problem... is it really just me?. There are some old post on this issue but there was no solution there other than downgrading which I have already tried.
    I've just realized that not even okular works!!! Why am I being punished?
    okular: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libXi.so.6: undefined symbol: XESetWireToEventCookie
    Thanks.

    hey,
    I've installed quartus II today too and ran into similiar conflicts. I build version 1.2.1 of libxi again as suggested by davidgurvich, but "tricked out" pacman to avoid rebuilding the whole xorg packages, which depend on  libxi>=1.3:
    pkgname=libxi
    pkgver=1.3
    pkgrel=2
    realver=1.2.1
    pkgdesc="X11 Input extension library"
    arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
    url="http://xorg.freedesktop.org"
    depends=('libxext>=1.1' 'inputproto>=2.0')
    makedepends=('pkgconfig')
    options=(!libtool force)
    license=('custom')
    source=(${url}/releases/individual/lib/libXi-${realver}.tar.bz2)
    md5sums=('cfb36307e8e7ffafe40848dba24e0b11')
    build() {
    cd "${srcdir}/libXi-${realver}"
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --disable-static || return 1
    make || return 1
    make DESTDIR="${pkgdir}" install || return 1
    install -m755 -d "${pkgdir}/usr/share/licenses/${pkgname}"
    install -m644 COPYING "${pkgdir}/usr/share/licenses/${pkgname}/" || return 1
    works for me... however, this is a dirty solution. maybe someone provide a better fix.
