Is Adobe CS3 sluggish on the iMac G5?

Hello folks,
I'm a graphic designer. I was thrilled to finally purchase Adobe's CS3 Design Premium last week and couldn't wait to install it on my iMac. A whole lot of great new features, but there was just one big problem - it seems to run slower than CS2 - especially Illustrator CS3. Try editing text in Illustrator and nothing happens for a good two seconds. Two seconds!
Is this a natural problem for iMac G5 owners? It can't be the memory - I've 2GB RAM, while Mac OS X and iLife fly along just as before. So is the processor meeting its limits with CS3? I understand CS3 is optimised for the multi-core Intel platform - so does that mean it's going to work a whole lot less efficiently on a single G5 processor?
I'm wondering whether I'll need to upgrade to the high-end iMac 24" to get my money's worth with CS3. It's the only iMac model Apple seems to recommend for use with CS3. I've no use for a laptop and the Mac Pro is just too expensive all things considered. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks a bunch.
Cheers, Steve.

Disk cache is akin to RAM, but uses disk space instead of a chip, it lets you work with big files. You can set the disk used under the Illustrator preferences.
.PS or PostScript files are created when you "print" to PostScript to create a PDF file instead of saving as PDF. You then take the .PS and run it through Acrobat Distiller to create the PDF. It is an older way of creating PDF and old habits die hard, but you also have more control over the size of PDF.
I am looking forward to the way the new Illustrator snaps when you are using the direct selection or pen tool . My middle-aged eyes sometime miss an anchor point and such, then I have to close that annoying warning popup.
We should take this discussion to Adobe's web site, but before that I have another thought.
If the Illustrator drawing has a lot of blends, 3D effects, and so on, then that can slow down operations.

  • What form of Adobe works best on the iMac

Whats the best form of Adobe to use with an iMac?

Adobe makes many differnet kinds of software, including Flash which is a browser plug-in so you can see content online and is not installed by deafult on Mac's anymore I believe.

You need to check occassionally that your Flash is updated
this site will check for you and your other one's too

If your talking about another Adobe software, you'll have to be more specific which "Adobe" your talking about and what your needs are.

  • Will Adobe CS3+CS4 work in OS above 10.6.8 ?

I want to continue using CS3+CS4, mainly Dreamweaver CS3 and Fireworks CS4, plus some Photoshop & Acrobat Pro in CS4. All ran well on my mid-2007 Macbook Pro (MA896LL) with OS 10.6.8. But this MBP failed recently, due to heat, and for my next Mac(s) two options are a 2010 Macbook (MC516LL) that can run OS 10.6, or a 2012 Mac Mini with i5 (MD387LL) that will not run OS 10.6 but does offer other benefits. (of course, running an OS higher than 10.6 also offers benefits!)
Will Dreamweaver-CS3 and Fireworks-CS4 run properly in all ways, with higher OS, with 10.7 or 8, 9, 10?
Does the kind of computer make a difference for this? For example, would these programs behave differently in OS 10.9 on the 2010-Macbook or 2012-Mini? (probably not, I assume)
These questions are important in deciding what to buy, but... now, because I don't have a Mac, I cannot do experiments (try the two programs with each OS) to see what happens. So I'm hoping you can help (thanks in advance!) by sharing your experience and knowledge.
FWIW, the Mac programs in CS3 and CS4 are 32 bit, if that makes any difference in OS-compatibility.

Yesterday the Macbook arrived (made in 2008, so it runs 10.6.8), and two installs (CS3, CS4) were successful.  For the next set of installations,* if Adobe requires a de-activation would the following plan work?
____My conclusion, after writing the paragraphs below, is "probably not" because (if Adobe doesn't check to see what computer CS is activated on) accepting this kind of de-activation would make it easy for someone to fake a de-activation by cloning the hard disk of a still-working computer, de-activating CS3/4 on that cloned disk-image, then continue using CS3/4 on the still-working computer and also (because they have fooled Adobe into thinking it's not active) an extra computer, using only one of the two activations.  So this probably isn't allowed by Adobe.  If necessary, probably I'll just have to contact Adobe, with the repairman to confirm the failure of my Macbook Pro with one of the CS3/4 installations.
    ____Well, here was the idea:
____My recently failed Macbook Pro had CS3 and CS4 installed.  The repairman recovered the entire hard drive (200 GB) and put it onto an external hard drive (4000 GB) as individual files and also as a cloned disk-image.  To de-activate, could I re-start the new computer in the old 10.6.8 (with "Startup Disk" in System Preferences) using this disk image, open Dreamweaver-CS3 (then deactivate) and Fireworks-CS4 (then deactivate)? Would the CS3 and CS4 on this disk-image be recognized by Adobe as being "one of my previous installs" that therefore would not count as being active, after they're deactivated?
____How to do this? I don't know much about clones. To get the old CS3/CS4 "recognized by Adobe" would this require putting the cloned "old Macbook Pro" into its own partition of a hard disk?  Or could I just start from the individual files of the un-cloned OS?  (In "System Startup" today, on another external hard disk I saw an OS 10.6.3 from a backup many years ago. I could choose it and re-start in 10.6.3, but... my question is about how to re-start so Adobe recognizes the old CS3/CS4 as a "previous activation on the old Macbook.")  Or maybe I could connect the hard disk with this cloned "old Macbook Pro" to my old half-working iMac, and de-activate CS3/4 from the iMac.
___ * The 2012 Mac Mini should arrive today, but I won't try CS3/CS4 on it (to see if it will install, and will run OK on 10.9.5) until later.  After doing the experiments, I'll report back about the results.

  • System Requirements Error For Adobe CS3 Installation?

When I try to install Adobe CS3 Design Premium on my iMac (Intel Based) I get an error message while clicking on the setup icon. This is the message:
    "System Requirements Error
This software cannot be installed because the file
system of the OS volume is not supported."
I checked the Adobe website and my computer meets all the requirements and I have the most update version of Mac Os X.
Where might I find the file system of my OS? And why doesn't it work with Adobe?

    Greetings,
Is it possible that you have a copy that is made for Windows OS. Even though it's an Intel chip, unless you have a copy of Adobe made for Mac OS, it won't work.
I've run in to this before, that's why I mentioned it. I have Adobe CS3, all of the CS3 products, loaded on my Macs, and it is Leopard 10.5.5.
    Cheers,
    M.

  • Adobe CS3 Wont Install?

I just installed Adobe CS3 and all the programs installed but Photoshop. I have even tried just installing Photoshop by itself and still says it failed to download. Anyone have any suggestions? I am running on OS X 10.8.2

Upgrade - some CS3 apps, according to roaringapps.com, are not compatible with Mountain Lion. Oddly enough, it shows that Photoshop CS3 is.
Some CS3 apps were not even working under Lion. It's really time to upgrade - I went from CS3 to CS6 and have been delighted.

I fear that you are trying to download OLDER Software on a newer Operating Sysytem Meaning that you need to Install the Latest Version of Adobe on the Newer Operating System for it to work Properly. Be sure to always check the minimum System Requirements.

  • OSX 10.5.4: Still the same problems with Adobe CS3 files

I updated to OS X 10.5.4 on a latest generation 24" iMac with Adobe CS3 on it. This is the only Mac with 10.5 installed in a publishing company with 10 Macs, all with Adobe CS3 and all working always with files on the same file server. The other 9 Macs have OS X 10.4 installed.
The iMac with 10.5 had massive problems with CS3 files since OS X 10.5.2 - frequently existing Photoshop files disappeared from the server after the "Save" command, frequently "Save As" was not possible in Photoshop, sometimes Indesign crashed when files were getting saved on the server - none of this is happening on the other Macs with OS X 10.4.
On the first couple of days with 10.5.4 at least in Photoshop exactly the same problems: Existing files disappear from the server after the "Save" command, "Save As" is often times not possible.
    It's a shame!

    Hi
Why don't you try updating with the larger installer, the combo updater. The combo updater is generally more helpful when troubleshooting a problem.

  • Adobe CS3 install fails on new iMac

I have been unable to install Adobe CS3 Design Standard on my brand new 27" Core 15 iMac. I have followed all the suggestions from Adobe, but only Acrobat installs okay. Can't get Photoshop, Illustrator, or Indesign to install. On the Adobe forums someone told me that CS3 is not compatible with Snow Leopard. However another post quotes Adobe claiming that it is compatible. I am wondering perhaps if it is the installer that doesn't work with Snow Leopard. Is it possible to boot up this new iMac with Leopard, installed on an external drive? If so, perhaps I could then install CS3 on the internal drive and then re-boot to Snow Leopard and all would be well?

The new iMac will not run an earlier OS. Besides, even if it could, Adobe can be very fussy about allowing you to move things from one drive to another. It might see it as an unauthorized installation on a second computer. CS2 runs on mine, but don't know about 3.

Not sure, but you might have to first de-authorize it on the Leopard to get it to install on the Snow. There is a "transfer" option somewhere.

You would need the original installation disks or files for the Adobe software to get it onto your iMac, and having it on two computers may not be allowed by your university's licensing. Talk to whoever issued the MacBook.
As to the music, just copy it over to the MacBook, either via Home Sharing, file sharing, or an external storage medium (hard drive, USB flash drive, etc.).

I'm trying to install Adobe Photoshop CS3 on a new ASUS ASM11BB001O computer equipped with 64-bit Windows 7.  I use a "bundle" approach, first loading Photoshop 6, then upgrading with CS upgrade and then CS3 upgrade.  The installation goes smoothly until I add PS CS, and then it balks at the "accept" Adobe conditions screen.  I have two other (Gateway) computers with Windows 7, 64-bit, on both of which the PS-6, CS-CS3 pathway worked fine.  Any thoughts on how to get this working?  Thanks

If your goal is to install and activate CS5 there is no need to install anything preceding it.  You will only need to have the serial number from the preceding version that you upgrade from (CS3 I guess).
