Is Adobe planning on fixing memory issues or are they hoping Fireworks will go away?

When trying to use Fireworks for larger sites, we (and a lot of other people we talk to) have always had issues with Fireworks crashing (Mac and PC).
We try to split files when working on larger sites but if you use a lot of symbols, updating them is really slow - often slower than saving files and it doesn't stop the crashing.
I realise people might say we're asking for trouble designing pages that are 3000px - 4000px long but long scrolling pages often work well (http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/design.html http://www.kaleidoscopeapp.com/) and we find ourselves designing more and more of them.
When using Fireworks every day, you have to wonder if Adobe would prefer everyone switch to Photoshop - does anyone know what their plans are for Fireworks?
Practical suggestions for stopping the crashes would also be great!
Cheers
Ben

Thanks Jim,
We saw a dot release for Fireworks with the CS5.5 Suite
When I looked at CS5.5 I didn't see Fireworks - totally missed that!
Can you tell me, are you designing multi-page files at these dimensions? If not - good. If so, I would question why, considering that you need to move to Dreamweaver or another web editor to create the actual final site.
Wherever possible, we actually wireframe then design directly in HTML/CSS but on bigger sites, we use developers who like Fireworks files. Plus on the bigger sites, corporate clients often prefer seeing how key pages will look/flow with content in them before they go out for coding.
In these situations, we've tried both multi-page documents and single page documents. But with a lot of symbols, it's actually quicker to reduce the undos to 1, use multi-page docs and gingerly save after every change! We've found updating lots of symbols across multiple docs painfully slow.
Again, I am making a lot of assumptions here, so please forgive that.
No worries!
Also keep in mind that the MAXIMUM page dimension for a new Fireworks document is 6000 pixels. And it sounds like you're getting awfully close to it. FW does not have the same kiknd of memory management features that Photoshop has.
I guess this is the crux of the issue. We can load up the file size in Photoshop but Fireworks has so many features targeted to web design that it's hard to use Photoshop for this purpose.
I thought I'd read somewhere that Fireworks will only ever use 2GB of ram and I've noticed a similar thing in Activity Monitor - Fireworks seems to only ever take about 1.98GB of ram. However this is pure speculation and I don't know this for sure.
Anyway, thanks for the replies. I guess I was curious to see if anyone had heard what Adobe might be planning as the memory issue is surely well known to them - and it's obviously a conscious decision to not allow Fireworks to access more.
Unless CS5.5 addresses this?
Cheers

    Recent iOS update has made my iPad 2 unusable. The screen locks up. It's very laggy and web pages do not load correctly.  Is there a fix for this or are they even working on a fix.

    Try some basic troubleshooting:
    (A) Try reset iPad
    Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    (B) Try reset all settings
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings
    (C) Setup as new (data will be lost if you do not have backup)
    Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings

  • Memory mapped files Are they still used.

    To System  programmers.
    In some of my old code David used memory mapped files in handling huge sets of random points.  The code reads in the whole file and then sets flags similar to an async process.  The filemapping handles memory instead of using mallocs.  the
    data maybe stored on the heap or in hte global stack.  I went back to Viusal Studio 6 and tried to take out the code as the standard c++ handles a full file read as a char buffer as a void * structure.  I found some valloc data types and
    then found the newer filemapping routines in VS2013. Plus an explanation of global stack and heap.
    Are software developers using file mapping or are they using say vectors to form stl structures.

    Here is some typical code in the old C.  This is close to the code I used in Visual studio 6.  I need to put this in vs2013 under c++ or C++ 11/14.  I have guessed the file handle open and size code.
    main{
    int fsize, numRecords;
    Point *allPoints;
     fsize = readAllFile(name, &allPoints);
    numRecords = fsize/ sizeof(Point);
    for (i=0; i < numRecords:; I++)  printf("rec %d values x %.3f\n", i, allPoints[i].x);
    int
    readAllFile(char*name, void **addr){
    file *fh;
    int fsize;
    openf(fh, name);
    fsize = getfilesize(fh);
    *addr = malloc(sizeof(char)*fsize);
    fclose(fh);
    return fsize;
    This is the boilerplate for the file reads.  Even tried this with text files and parsing the text records.  Instead of the mallocs you suggest vector and the scheme of the code remains the same.
    For a lidar file the xyz records have grown from 10,000 in the 1990's to 1,000,000 points in the mid 2000's.  For this size file 24 M bytes are allocated in one hit.  The whole of the Gold Coast in terms of lidar points in 2003 was 110 million
    points.  It could be more.
    Where is the data stored in the Malloc, Vector or memory Mapped file.  What is good and bad practice.

  • Adobe Acrobat X Pro memory issues

    I work for a company that scans micro film cards into the computer. Each micro film card usually has about 4 to 5 pages on each card. The scanner we use scans those 5 pages into one pdf page. We just bought adobe acrobat x pro to help us split these images into separate pages. First we highlight the first part of the image, copy to clipboard, then under more insert options we insert from clipboard. This works as intended, but we run into a snag, 1st adobe starts eating up a lot of memory, and it gets slower and slower when you cut and insert pages. Usually after you have closed about 6 separate documents adobe bogs down to the point where it stops responding and has to shut down. I have searched on the web for the past 3 days trying to find out how to resolve this. I have done everything from removing add-ons, setting adobe as admin, running it in xp mode, setting affinity, setting priority, downgrading to a fresh install with no patch. I am at my wits end, any help would be appreciative.

    Great... so there is no update to get over this pixelated text/art issue for Acrobat Pro X (10.1.13) due to the retina display???
    I am a graphic designer so I know what I am viewing is hires. All my art & copy is pixelated and when I open in the newest reader the art is fine. Is there a more efficient workaround besides open in reader but use pro for any edits?

  • Is Adobe planning on fixing any of the LION bugs with CS5?

    I've been reading a lot about these bugs with Adobe CS5 applications and LION (here's some> http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/905/cpsid_90508.html). A friend had a ton of problems and ended up sending her laptop back because of them (she wasnt able to downgrade to Snow Leopard over Lion with that particular laptop). I just ordered a new imac, and think I'm going to be using my old one for a while if there are all these bugs. I primarily use my mac for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and if they are going to be problematic that is going to be a big drawback for me. I talked to an employee at Apple this weekend, and he said Adobe is always behind the ball with getting their software up to speed with new operating systems. Which didnt make me feel anybetter. Lion's been out for a while now, and I assume Adobe received the OS way before it was released to the public in order for them to upgrade their apps to make them compatible. Does anyone know what the status is on when the next big Adobe update is going to happen to address these issues?

    As to bug fixes, you'd have to ask Adobe that question. I would presume they'll fix at least some of the issues before the next major release, but what specifically they'll do, only Adobe could tell you. Note, though, that most of the issues Adobe publicly acknowledges are pretty minor and/or are present in earlier versions of the CS suite, not 5.5.

  • With Firefox 5.0.1, I can no longer have search terms highlighted when I search via cache. This makes searching for key concepts impossible now. Is there a plan to fix this issue?

    In the past, before Firefox 5.0.1, I would search for key terms via the cache mode; thus, the terms would be highlighted in various colors so that I could scroll down the page and find the exact terms.
    This is no longer functioning since I downloaded 5.0.1
    I use an iMac 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1o.6.8.

    The new tab page (about:newtab) wasn't introduced until a later version of Firefox (iirc, ''Firefox 10'') , which is why that pref can't be found.

  • CS4, what are the most pressing issues and are they solved ???!!!

    I'll be visiting the Adobe booth at the IBC on the 15-th to have a sneak preview of CS4.
    To properly report back what I have seen, I need a short list of the most pressing issues and what interests you most to see solved or added. Just to name a few of the topics:
    1. 64 bit or 32 bit?
    2. Support for 64 bit OS and which ones?
    3. Matte problems solved? (BTW, what were the exact issues with mattes in CS3?)
    4. Titler improvements?
    5. What (new) video formats are supported natively?
    6. What significant improvements are made in integration in the Suite?
    I'm not looking for a repeat of the wishlist, just the most important issues to have a look at.
    Looking forward to your suggestions.

    Here is the news as I got it from one of the technicians and beta testers at the IBC, who showed some interesting things on the current beta version.
    1. The RTM version is not ready yet. It will definitely be this year, but it will not be out in September. Most likely is around November and not all promised features will be available in the 4.0 version, but will be supplied by downloadable patches.
    2. Interlacing/de-interlacing has not been solved. It is still the archaic approach from the '70-s era.
    3. Vista 64 is officially supported, XP 64 is not officially supported, but runs without problems. Several beta testers have not seen any problems with XP-64. All applications are still 32 bit applications, apart from PS Extended, which is 64 bit. Parts of the memory model are ported to 64 bit. The first steps to porting all applications to 64 bit have been taken, but do not expect full support before CS5.
    4. The major improvement has been in the project structure. Every project now has its own information about drive, directory and file structure as part of the project. Files in the project can have different properties in terms of resolution, i or p, so effectively this makes for Edius like capabilities, allowing for different sources in a single project, XDCAM-EX, HDV, AVCHD, P2 sources can be mixed and edited on the same timeline. You can move i material to a p timeline and edit from there.
    5. Adobe Media Encoder is now a separate application.
    6. Dynamic Linking has been improved significantly and encompasses AE, PP, EN in all directions.
    7. Batch processing has been added. You can now add timelines to a render cue and continue editing on the same timeline and there seems to be some intelligence behind it as well.
    8. OMF has been vastly improved.
    9. The garbage matte problems have been solved.
    10. Ultra is still a stand-alone application.
    11. Improvements have been made to Encore, whether that includes closing the DVD was not really known.
    12. Edit in Audition has been restored.
    13. AVCHD is supported, RED support will be added (possibly even for CS3). Note that even on a 4-core MAC the editing experience with AVCHD is tiresome and horrendously slow. You may succeed in editing that kind of material, but only with 8-cores. Otherwise it is like editing HDV on a P4 @ 2.8 GHz with a single disk. It can be done, but it is not a pleasure. The CPU requirements are enormous and IMO most will be heavily disappointed that they need to upgrade their PC before any serious editing can be done, despite all the warnings given.
    14. The titler has not been improved, but the strange windows problems (resizing) have been solved.
    15. Dependency on Red, MainConcept and others make the delivery dates unsure, but it will take some time and new patches are already being worked on.
    16. Adobe at IBC has only beta versions.
    17. One member here (I will not mention names) is probably the best beta tester Adobe has ever had and this person beats all other beta testers by a wide margin in finding bugs. Thanks for all your continued trouble, NN. You will know who I mean if you are the person in question. One of your colleague beta testers was in awe of you.
    The stability and integration of the suite has been vastly improved and tons of bugs have been resolved, so from that point of view, upgrading to CS4 looks very worthwhile. Initially however, third parties have to resolve some issues with their software, like Sony with their Clip Browser, which contains a serious bug, causing PP to crash completely. These bugs need to be resolved shortly and hopefully will be addressed before the RTM version comes out.

  • Privilege settings how to fix them and what are they

    trying to download itunes gives me a privilege error message

    Hi mariacrowe,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
    The article below will help you with issues installing the latest version of iTunes for Windows:
    Issues installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
    What version of Windows are you using?  This article explains what file permissions are and gives instructions from Microsoft for changing permissions:
    Trouble adding music to iTunes library or importing audio CD
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1387
    Resolution
    These messages occur if permissions are incorrect on your designated music folder or on a folder inside your designated music folder. Permissions are settings that determine who can read, write to, or execute a file or folder on your computer. Every file and folder on your hard disk has an associated set of permissions.
    Example: If permissions are correct on your Music folder, but incorrect on the U2 folder inside your Music folder, you would be able to add other music to your iTunes library, but not that new U2 album.
    Look here for help in correcting the permissions on folders:
    Windows XP:
    How to set, view, change, or remove file and folder permissions in Windows XP
    Note: Permissions and privileges for files are different from authorization to play a song purchased from the iTunes Store. Click here for information on authorizing a purchased song to play.
    Additional Information
    To be able to add new music to iTunes, permissions must be correct on your Music folder and the folders in it.
    Cheers,

  • If my wake/sleep button doesnt work, are they going to fix it? Or are they going to give me a new iphone 5?

    I have brought it in spain but i am going to germany next week and i will try to fix my problem there, does my warranty have an international use?

    Apple will replace the phone; they don't make repairs, except for glass damage. The warranty is NOT international; you must take the phone to an Apple store in the country of purchase, EXCEPT that the EU counts as one country. So you are in luck.

  • Result Set Causing out of memory issue

    Hi,
    I am having trouble to fix the memory issue caused by result set.I am using jdk 1.5 and sql server 2000 as the backend. When I try to execute a statement the result set returns minimum of 400,000 records and I have to go through each and every record one by one and put some business logic and update the rows and after updating around 1000 rows my application is going out of memory. Here is the original code:
    Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
    ResultSet   rs = st.executeQuery("Select * from  database tablename where field= 'done'");
                while(rs!=null && rs.next()){
                System.out.println("doing some logic here");
    rs.close();
    st.close();
    I am planning to fix the code in this way:
    Statement stmt = con.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_FORWARD_ONLY,
                          ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE);
    stmt.setFetchSize(50);
    ResultSet   rs = st.executeQuery("Select * from  database tablename where field= 'done'");
                while(rs!=null && rs.next()){
                System.out.println("doing some logic here");
    rs.close();
    st.close();But one of my colleague told me that setFetchSize() method does not work with sql server 2000 driver.
    So Please suggest me how to fix this issue. I am sure there will be a way to do this but I am just not aware of it.
    Thanks for your help in advance.

    Here is the full-fledged code.There is Team Connect and Top Link Api being used. The code is already been developed and its working for 2-3 hours and then it fails.I just have to fix the memory issue. Please suggest me something:

                     ex1=null;
                     ex2=null;
                     finalExpression=null;
    and also I added the code to request the Garbage collector after every 5th update:
    if (updateInfo(vo, user)){
                               logger.info("project update : "+ rs.getString("number_string"));
                               projCount++;
                               //call garbage collector every 5th record update
                               if(projCount%5==0){
                                    System.gc();
                                    logger.debug("Called Garbage Collectory on "+projCount+"th update");
                          }But now the code wont even update the single record. So please look into the code and suggest me something so that I can stop banging my head against the wall.

  • Does anyone know if/when Fireworks will get a memory overhaul?

    Hi There,
    I know many people on this forum don't run into this issue - but does anyone know if Adobe is planning on sorting the memory issues in Fireworks?
    More and more, the only way we can use Fireworks is by splitting documents and reducing the number of undos to 1 which makes using symbols (a massive advantage over Photoshop IMHO) unusable. We've tried sharing sysmbols between multiple documents but updating them was so slow it wasn't practical.
    If you're thinking "Why would you need more memory - he must be doing it worng" try designing sites with multiple scrolling pages like this one from apple: http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/ Not all clients and developers require a site to be mocked-up like this - but many do.
    I'm sitting here on a production workstation which has 12GB of ram but FWCS5 only ever seems to use between 1.77 and 1.8GB (viewed in activity monitor).
    Does anyone know if:
    - CS5.1 fixes this?
    - Adobe plans to fix it in the future?
    - Adobe plans to keep Fireworks alive?
    Please note, I'm not trying to create any forum Fireworks (ah hem) I'm just at a point where I'm seriously evaluating other options for our production workflow - it will be a sad, sad day if Adobe kills this product but patching it up and not dealing with fundamental issues is also not working for some us.
    Any help or pointers people have discovered to get around the issue (or any insider information on Adobe's plans : ) would be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Ben

    I've had some luck minimizing the memory bloom by:
    - minimizing the use of buttons with multiple states
    - minimizing the use of buttons with editable text
    - avoiding shared layers - which seem to be shared, but also seem to baloon the memory usage (as if they aren't really symbols but are rememberd as unique sets of pixels)  For instance when I removed the iPad frame that surrounded my screens from a shared layer, the memory usave plummeted.
    - using styles instead of symbols as much as possible
    - minimally using master pages
    - avoid pixels at all cost - use vectors as much as possible, trim masked imaged more closely
    - avoid abobe photoshop effect styles, they seem to take up more memory and are more restrictive anyway.
    - avoid protoyping demos with rollovers and other animations, stick to static screens as much as possible
    - avoid paging through your file agressively - each page you look at loads that part of the file into memory.  So if you hit "page up" 30 times to get to page 30, you might be getting close to your ceiling.  But if you go directly to page 30 then you have a better chance of keeping your memory allocation from maxing out.
    It's not that you should avoid using these features completely, but to do so in simpler ways.  I usually try and stick with one primary method (simple symbols) and one supporting method (styles) and so far, even on a doc that's over 100 pages, no crashing.
    If you have symbols within symbols with hovers built into editable buttons scattered across hundreds of pages with some shared layers, some excluded layers, some master pages, some variant pages, and the app will grind to a halt, crash for no reason, and file may never open again.
    None of this fixes the problem.  The problem is Adobe's to fix.   But they do help.

  • Can adobe patch files be deleted what are they whay do they take up so much space

    Can adobe patch files be deleted? What are they and why does it take up so much space?

    sweetboo5
    If you are using Premiere Elements 9 Mac, then the next thing to do is to get details on what you mean by "patch files".
    There are no "patch files" as you describe. There is a Premiere Elements 9.0.1 Update that needs to be used with the program. That you install and do not uninstall for best performance of the product.
    What I am wondering is this. Do you mean by patch files and the description that you give Scratch Files?
    If so, then you are looking at preview files and conformed audio and video files.
    I am strictly an Elements Windows person so you will have to help me translate my Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 Windows instructions into meaningful ones for you as it relates to file location.
    Under Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disk, where do you have Video Previews and Audio Previews directed. At that location, you should be able to delete these files. They are automatically generated when you render Timeline content. The consequence of deletion is that you will need to render again content in the project from which they came (if that project still exists). Go to the location shown and delete.
    Then look to see where the Media Cache is directed. Those are conformed audio and video files (cfa and pek). They can be deleted and will be regenerated by the program if and when needed. Go to the location shown and delete.
    Then look to Edit Menu/Preferences/Media and the Media Cache Database. That is targeting conformed video files (.mcdb file extension). They can be deleted and will be regenerated by the program if and when needed. You can click on the Clean button there to get rid of them instead of following the path to them as shown in the Media Cache Database area.
    Do not delete any source media that went into projects after they were saved closed.
    Please review the above and do not hesitate to ask if you need clarification on anything that I have written.
    If none of the above applies to your question, then please more details.

  • EFI update or SMC update to fix issues? Apple plans on fixing these?

    Does anyone know if there are any plans to update the EFI or SMC to add support for the integrated Intel HD graphics and allow automatic graphics switching (Optimus) to function in Windows? Also, are there plans on fixing the Intel® 5 Series Chipset erros (code 10) on the two controllers? After researching online these have been going on for a while and I am hopping Apple plans on addressing the issues.

    Actual error for these devices
