Is Adobe Reader really this bad?

Hi,
I've been working on a PDF for a while now, but I have found Adobe Reader to be completely useless. In fact it has hindered my progress greatly. I have to ask if anyone else has found this or if for whatever reason I have just been cursed with these issues. I find many Adobe products useful, but this is too much.
The biggest problem is that while editing text Adobe Reader will often crash and everything I have edited to that point is lost. When this happens I get an error saying,
The instruction at 0x3a32333a referenced memory at 0x3a32333a. The
memory could not be written.

Click on OK to terminate the program.
___________________________________________________________
I have no idea what that means and I have not found anything mentioning it. I have tried re-installing Adobe Reader but nothing changed.
Other problems I have -
The program constantly seems to be updated information even when I haven't edited anything; the cursor is always flashing between the pointer arrow and the windows blue loading circle, and the program is slow as molasses. when I enter text it takes up to 6 seconds for it to appear on screen. Not to mention the terribly unreliable and glitchy scrolling. I have to spend multiple minutes scrolling up and down hoping that it will stop on where I need to edit.
Whenever I am attempting to edit a text field and I scroll up to find the information I need that is earlier on the PDF it sucks my view back down to the text field. I recognize this may be an intended feature but with my other problems it is extremely irritating.
I don't know if my version of Adobe Reader is corrupted or something. It's been doing this since I installed it, and I'm just trying to fill out my Eagle Scout workbook. I am extremely frustrated and tired of using this program, but it doesn't seem there is much of a choice when it comes to editing PDFs.
I can't imagine that this is the experience most other people have with this program because I know that Adobe is very proud of their software's quality.
I'm using an HP ProBook 4545s running Windows 8.1 Pro
System Specs -
Processor: AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 2.70 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (3.45 GB usable)
System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
I can't imagine it's a hardware problem because I can't imagine that Adobe Reader with it's homely GUI and seemingly simple construct is very demanding on a system, but it seems good practice to include all the information I can.
Thanks for any answers that can be provided, I really need this program to be able to work because I have to complete this workbook and time is running out.

Well if that is the case then it certainly answers my question. Although it raises another, I'm using Adobe Reader XI and I can most definitely open, view, and edit a PDF... well that may be saying a bit much since it does allow for entering text, exporting, and things such as that, but it doesn't do it real well..
If the answer really is I'm trying to use it for something it's not meant for I can accept that.
So I'd ask, what can I do in my situation then? I don't need a program for a very long. I only have about 24 days until I can't even work on this project anymore. Is there another program I can use that can edit a PDF that's free?

• Adobe reader really slow on brand new Core-i7 machine

Opening of a PDFs is very very slow on my brand new Windows 7 64-bit machine. Machine is a new Core-i7  system with 16Gb Memory
PDF's which open on other much older pc's within a second take 20-30 seconds on this new machine.
The machine has a Radeon R260 Graphics card which was used in the previous machine with no issues. Just to be sure I have removed the card and used the on-board graphics to try to eliminate the card but the problem is exactly the same so must be windows related.
Reader has been uninstalled and re-installed with no Joy.
The rendering of the image is a problem as when zooming or panning the image again redraws very slowly (20-30 seconds) each time.
PC is otherwise very fast.
Can anyone help ?
Thanks

Hi VS2015,
Have you noticed this issue with any other program too or just with Adobe Reader?
How much on-board graphics memory do you have on your system?
Moreover, As you had mentioned that "The rendering of the image is a problem as when zooming or panning the image again redraws very slowly (20-30 seconds) each time." I would recommend you to Update your Video Driver from Device manager option in Control Panel.

• Is the X1 hardware really this bad?

I have been a very long standing Comcast triple bundle customer, one who really doesn't have major issues with the company..until now. I recently signed up for the x1 service as it would save me money and I'd pick up a few channels as well...but so far it has been an unmitigated disaster. I am wondering if all their equipment and service is this bad, or am I the exception... First, I had a lot of trouble installing the cable modem/gateway. It should be plug and play, but it took an hour on the phone with tech support. Next came the x1 dvr install...which didn't happen. The supplied box would not accept input from the remotes I was sent (we tried both the 'master' remote as well as the 'slave' remote. So, back on the phone with support. They decided to overnight me another x1 dvr. Much to my surprise, instead of another x1 dvr, I received an old remote that doesn't even work with x1 box. So now I have to wait another week to get another shipment, hopefully this time the right equipment. So I have invested hours of time, and I still have no x1 tv set up..But at least I have a huge pile of junk comcast xfinity hardware sitting around!

All flat screen TV's emit IR interference of some sort. Some are much worse than others. While admittedly I am a huge plasma TV fan, they are known to be more notorious culprits of this issue, especially older plasma TVs. It can be bad enough to interfere with IR remote control performance. I have seen it many times.
HOWEVER some set top boxes are MUCH more susceptible to this kind of interference. I clearly remember a day not that long ago when you could not have a Pace legacy HD box in the same room with a Panasonic plasma TV. I am sure many Comcast techs would remember this.
Having to set X1 remotes to RF mode is a well known solution and is discussed in this forum almost daily. Sorry your tech or anybody else didn't make the connection. I guess we were not on site and we simply did not have enough information to help you more. That being said, many of us do not use the Comcast remotes and we need IR to work.
cohenfive, I am glad you solved your issues. However please know it is not new. Switching X1 remotes to RF is well known. Comcast boxes having issues with IR signals is also well known. I have written about it before. Some of the X1 boxes appear to have overly sensitive IR receiver windows and they are easily "flooded" which makes the box seem to be locked up. Here is just one thread I wrote: http://forums.xfinity.com/t5/X1/A-Fix-for-the-Search-Box-Popping-Up-By-Mistake/m-p/2355227#M36634

• Is the Nokia Repair Centre really this bad???

Well it's a sad day for me, earlier this year due to a weak design of the 1520 my digitizer cracked. So I finally scraped the £125 required to replace the screen as it's calassed as an out of warranty repair and sent my phone off for repair and that was just the start of the problems.
So paid the money for a cosmetic out of warranty repair but then no communication on when the phone would be collected or even any communication to acknowledge payment except the money service WorldPay who the transaction went though.
After numerous calls to Anovo and Microsoft being shoved from pillar to post a nice lady at MS sorted out the collection on behalf of Anovo.
After a week or so I suddenly had an email from WorldPay saying I had had a part refund but without any explanation.
I then a few days later received an email from the Nokia Repair Centre but it had no content apart from a failed download message.
I then checked my phone via the Nokia Technical Support site to discover the phone was now being returned to me, good news or so I thought.
And today the phone arrived!!!! and it has not been repaired, no explanation as to why not and right from the start no way to actually contact the repair team to even ask them what they are playing at and why the phone was not repaired.
I am disgusted with the way I have been treated and while I had most of my money returned it has still cost me £12.83 to basically send my phone on a nice little holiday.
Lets hope this is a one off and not the normal experience customers will receive.
I have been a Windows Mobile MVP and fan since 2002 and now a Windows Phone technical supporter on forums and MS ExpertZone since it's launch and never experienced such a poor quality of service until now. I really hope this is not the future of things to come.

Sorry to learn about your experience, awarner. Given your current situation, we recommend contacting your local support team and inquire about the repair history of your phone: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/mobile/contact/.
Keep us posted with the outcome.

My k510 with 1.3mp take better photos then the 6280 with 2mp.
And swithcing from low quality to high quality in the options does absolutely nothing.
So should i replace this phone, or all the 6280 have this poor camera quality?
Thx in advance.

i understand, it's just something about nokia's camera phones, the pictures are always not sharp or clear, but sony ericsson i think have the best quality, take the phone back if you don't like the quality of the images, though i don't really need crisp quality

• Can anyone help solve this frustrating drop down bug in Adobe Reader 8?

Has anyone encountered drop downs in their PDF form that don't work in Adobe Reader 8?
A simple example is my form (stripped back) here:
http://www.wikski.com/misc/test.pdf
I've built a form with 22 sections in it, some 1800 lines of code, and now every single drop down has decided to not work in Adobe Reader 8.
The behaviour is when you select a drop down, it immediately deselects itself and you can't use the element at all.
I previously had this occur, and by simply deleting the element in LiveCycle Designers ES2 (which is what I've used to create the entire form) and recreating it exactly the same; seemed to fix it. However, I am so far past the point of being able to recreate every drop down this time, I need to actually know what's causing the bug.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,

xfa.layout.relayout(); is required to re-render the entire form in order to have the field change color on Enter event. Without this, the field won't change color in Adobe Reader 8, this goes for all fields not just drop downs. Instead it'll just flicker the color change, xfa.layout.relayout(); makes the color change stick.
Thanks for your help, I've decided to take the set_focus() event off drop downs and keep it in place just for other field types such as the text input field.

• Javascript maildoc issue with Adobe Reader 9.5

Good morning all,
I am trying to find a possible answer to an issue I have been given regarding the maildoc javascript we are using in one of our forms.
We are on Windows XP, Adobe Reader 9.5 and Outlook 2010.
We generate purchase orders within SAP and forward to out vendors, they supply confirmation information and digitally sign the document.  The completed document should then be emailed as an attachment.
Using Adobe Reader X this process runs very smoothly but in 9.5 the email is generated but without the PDF form as an attachment.
Has anybody else had this issue or is this known and not available until X?  I have read on a number of posts that there are possible issues with Apple and such the like but wondered whether this was also an issue on the MS platform.
Thanks in advance.
Ashley

Could I then ask another question regarding this?
Was it possible to generate the email including the PDF from Adobe Reader in version 9.5 or was this facility only available in Adobe Acrobat until the introduction of Adobe Reader X?
Hope this makes sense as I really need to get an answer back to my boss.
Thanks for any information in advance.

• Adobe Reader leaving temp files, which are not auto-deleting.

Adobe reader is leaving temp files all over and I can't delete them. The temp files are left in my "My Documents" folder, which is redirected to the server. Anytime I open a PDF, it leaves a temp file (ie:U17F7.tmp) and it does not auto-delete. The temp files are 0 bytes in size, just really annoying when my folders get cluttered with all these temp files.  I also cannot delete the files, because it says the location is incorrect. I am able to delete the temp files when I'm not connected to the company network. How do I get these temp files to remove themselves once I close out of Adobe Reader?  This is driving me crazy!

Hi burdurboy05
What is the version of reader that you're using?
Are you trying to print files ?
Did you try to uninstall and re-install the product?

• Developing an Add-in for Adobe Reader to insert the PDF into Lotus Notes

Hi
We currently have a document management solution in MS Word & Excel, where by you can open/create a document click a button that is linked to a macro and it brings a Document Management screen up and allows you to save the file into a new Lotus Notes Document.
We are now trying to get the same functionality into Adobe Reader, whereby a user can open a PDF they have on their PC and then go to a menu item and it will perform similar function to our macro/VB that we have setup in MS Word & Excel.
Does anyone know of anyone who has developed such an idea or could point me in the right direction of where to start developing as I have never developed any add-in/plug-ins for Adobe Reader.
This needs to be done really in Visual Basic, but any help would be great
Thanks
Ian

You start by downloading the Acrobat SDK.
In the SDK is information about developing a plugin for Reader, which will require you to obtain a license from Adobe.  Submit the necessary paperwork to see if you are approved.   It doesn’t make much sense to start development if you don’t get approval.
Once approved, you will want a copy of Adobe Acrobat for development as it’s easier than developing with Reader.
Plugins are developed in C/C++ and there are samples in the SDK.

• Cannot install updated Adobe Reader

I use Windows Vista, and when trying to update, received an error.  I uninstalled the version I had so I could install the latest version (X), but althoug it would download, it would not install.  Also I was unable to reinstall the earlier version that I had. The message received today says "download timeout" even though it has only been a matter of seconds. Any suggestions as to what the problem is & how I can correct it?

I work in Desktop Support for the Forest Service & I have found that sometimes when uninstalling an application that the un-install did not correctly remove the application from the computer. In those type of cases the Windows registry still has remnants of the application so when you try and re-install the application it won't install because of thos remnants (many times when you look in Control Panel--- Add/Remove Programs, it will appear that the progrm is not installed!)
You can use a tool provided by Microsoft to remove those remnants called msicuu2.exe I'm not sure where to get it, so just Google that name and you should be able to find it.
This tool will show all the applications currently installed as well as the application which is really only remnants in the registry. He will select ONLY Adobe reader in this utility and remove it (IF it appears as one of the applications which is in his computer). If Adobe Reader does NOT appear as one of the applications which can be removed then we have a differnt problem and need to proceed with further troubleshooting.

• Difficulty in downloading adobe reader

I have a new hp pc with windows 7 and I could not open some e-mail messages and then it told me that I needed to download a free copy of adobe reader.  When I attempted to download it would go just so far(59.76%) and sit there for hours and not complete.  I did this several times then I called 800 number and got an individual that I had trouble understanding and she gave me this e-mail address with assurance that someone would contact me in the next 24 hours to help with this very simple task.     IS ADOBE READER REALLY READY FOR WINDOWS 7?????????????????
