Is After Effects CC disk cache taking up double the space on my RAID 0 SSD? Should I move it?

In AE CC the available space on my RAID 0 (2 x 120GB SSD) drive drops from 100GB to around 40GB as soon as I do even a small RAM preview and even though I have set the disk cache in the preferences to 30GB. It also causes AE to prompt that I may not have enough space on the drive for the amount of cache I have set in preferences even though there appears to be 40GB left on it.
I really value working with long fast RAM previews but other than that I'm not sure if the performance is jeopardised at all here. At one point I was enjoying 60GB of disk cache.
RAID 0 is striped so it shouldn't take up double the space, am I right?
I am about to install a RAID 0 HDD (2 x 3TB) for source files as I work with video a lot and have a 4K RAW project on the go so no time like the present. So should I move the disk cache from the ridiculously fast RAID 0 SSD to the new RAID HDD drive (as suggested in Harm's guide)?

Thank you Mylenium. All this time I have been absolutely convinced that you don't need to defragment SSDs. Is this a complete misunderstanding? Even if you do though, I have Windows 8 (not 8.1) which is doing that once a week automatically (apparently even to SSDs).
Are you saying that the 30GB disk cache set up works like a contiguous file?

2 x 120GB Force GT Raid 0 SSD on SATA 6gb/s is my boot drive as well as where I keep programs and the disk cache. I do a disk clean up to remove temp files a couple of times a week but that's all.
1 x 3TB Barracuda on on SATA 6gb/s for back ups and exports
3TB Lacie on USB 3 for source video and project files

I'll try a manual defrag of my RAID 0 SSDs now.

  • After Effects CC disk cache error on startup w/ immediate crash

I'm running a GTX 780 with 32GB of RAM, x1 240GB SSD (on which AE is installed) and x1 2.5TB HDD. Both show that they have more than enough space to cache the 10GB recommended by AE, yet whenever I open it up, it prompts a message box informing me that my disk cache folder is on a drive that does not have enough available space specified in my preferences. So I click OK, thinking that I'll be able to change this, but AE immediately quits as soon as the message box disappears. How can I change the preferences for AE without actually opening it? Or am I going about this the wrong way? Please help, Adobe Support was just about useless in this situation.

It's weird that your permissions fixing didn't fix it.
It's almost always that. This page suggests it and some other fixes: fixing permissions problem that impedes start of Adobe applications
Also, try running CC (version 12) and see if it works.

  • DISK CACHE taking over computers

We have a facility of probably 50 macs running CC.
We have about 10 of them consitently using AE.  It seems that AE is eating up all the disk space.
Whenever a different person gets on the computer they log in with there own account.  So we can have up to 20 different people using the same computer.  AE seems to store all the disk cache by default in the users folders.  That means every user is getting 90gbs of disk cache.  Therefore 1 TB gets eaten up very fast.  And no one can go in and empty the disk cache for someone else cause they don't ahve their passwords.
Is there a way to tell AE where to store its disk cache by default.  That way when a new person starts to work there and log in for the first time they don't have to go and tell where to put the disk cache?  Also is there a way to change the default size of disk cache?

You would have to edit the relevant part of the prefs, which could easily be done with a 5 line script using the app.settings.saveSetting() method and adressing the relevant cache stuff. By handing the script over as a command line parameter, you could reset this setting every time on program launch even if the user has changed it. And naturally with a few extras you could make this even smarter...

I installed the CC trial with an error window saying: Could not create the file '/Users/dranim/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/13.2/dummy'.  That was the first window.   Heres the second: After Effects can’t continue: unexpected failure during application startup  I paid for the month subscription of 29.99. It claims it is downloading again?! Am I missing something here? Why is this process so complicated? I need to get this resolved asap and start working.

I originally had Adobe Photoshop Extended, then upgraded to the Production Suite. I ran the Adobe Cleaner, and that uninstalled most Adobe products, including my existing Adobe install, and then I re-installed everything with the same error code. Since CS4 came with CS5, I've installed AE CS4, but would really like to upgrade because I'm new to Creative Suite, and not sure how CS4 integrates with CS5...CS4 After Effects installed perfectly. I do have a 64 bit system, and installing to an OCZ Vertex 2....every other suite installs perfectly, except AE. And I think that is the coolest program in the Suite. I thank you all so much for taking the time to help, I really want to get AECS5 running...I did try to install after doing the recommended items Adobe suggests for Exit Codes 6 and 7, including turning off many startups...
    I'm baffled....

    As Niel pointed out, yes.  The disk probably will look like the MBP disk (4) in this screenshot;

  • After Effects error: There was an error processing the PDF document.

I have been struggling with this problem ever since CS4 was installed.
I have the CS4 Mac Master Collection.
I am using Illustrator to create text for animation in After Effects.
I can create text in Illustrator and import it into After Effects fine. But when I go to make a change to
the Illustrator file, even as simple as changing a color, I get this error.
After Effects error: There was an error processing the PDF document. The file may be damaged or corrupt. (50::29)
The Illustrator file is then toast as far as After Effects is concerned. It cannot be opened or reimported.
I have to start over again and over again, rebuilding the Illustrator file each time.
    HELP!!!

This is an issue with AI and ultimately therefore also the AI routines that AE shares to access such files. Has been there forever and neither the AI people nor the AE team seem to be able to fix it in a consistent manner. Simply save a copy of the file from AI, then use Replace Footage instead of reload or at least always fully reload the AE project.

  • Since upgrading to Aperture 3.3, when I try to sync photos to my iPhone, I'm getting all versions in a stack loading onto my phone, which makes for some ugly pics, as well as taking up nearly double the space.

Could it be the problem lies with iTunes and not Aperture?  iTunes 10.6.3 was released on the same day as Aperture 3.3 --  June 11.
If someone has a configuration to test an older version of Aperture with iTunes 10.6.3 to see if the problem exists, that could be helpful.

  • How to fix a bad After Effects CS3 disk?

In 2007, I got the CS3 Master Collection. It took me over 2 days to get almost all the applications to install properly. I ended up copying all the DVDs to a common folder on the desktop and running the install from there. I've used this technique a few times for hardware upgrades since then with one error every time. Everything but After Effects copied/installed - this particular disk kept throwing out an 'unable to read  blah, blah' error (hey, it was a long time ago). This was documented and traced to a bad batch of AE DVDs and folks had the option to apply for new disk.
Being a still image person doing mainly Photoshop and InDesign, I kind'a just forgot about it - until recently when I finally started doing some video using Premiere Pro. Anyway, it looks like now the only way to get a working version of AE is to upgrade the whole Master Collection to CS4 (!). For a whole bunch of $$$ reasons I don't see that happening for a while. I emphasize that I am the legally registered user of the suite - I just need a working copy of AE CS3 to install from. Any ideas?

Maybe I'll have my wife do it, and break down in tears halfway into describing my dumb-assed neglectfulness. That’ll cost me something
