Is After Effects Good for YouTube-Style presentations?

Hi! I'm about to start a new channel where I'm going to make educational videos about mysterious/strange topics. I'm thinking of using an animation program for brief and simple short animations, that would make about 1/3 of my videos. Animations would be only for presenting my ideas, similar to CPG Grey's videos (a Youtuber with video style that I want to implement, particularly the visuals), not for anything serious like cartoons. It is in a power-pointish style but looks brilliant (apparently he uses Keynote but I don't have a Mac ). A sample of what I mean is here.
I also want to learn After Effects for future video editing so I thought it might be a good idea to use it for the animations and learn it at the same time. So, any comments? Do you think I would be able to use AF for animations similar to those of CPG Grey's?
Thank you for your replies!
-Arty

It's very hard to say how long it will take you to learn AE. AE is layer based and uses keyframes for anything you want to change. It also depends on how complicated you want to make your animation. A simple slide show timed to music takes an experienced artist with a fairly good set of tools about 20 to 30 seconds per slide to bring them in, set a keyframe for in and out, adjust position and move to the next shot. That means a 60 image slide show will take about a half hour to go through just to start. Throw in twice that much time for tweaking and you have an hour and a half for 60 slides. Now throw in any time you'll need to create any text or do any other animations - Figure 3 or 4 minutes minimum per new layer or effect, and add the time to produce the audio track and you've easily looking at 6 to 8 hours for a 60 slide show project.
The other option, record your audio track, open up something like iPhoto or the windows equivalent and select fit slide show to audio track and push go.
A new AE artist could easily spend a week doing a  60 slide show animation. Someone that's done a similar project a lot and isn't going to have to spend a lot of time creating graphics could knock one out in about an hour. If I were to tackle the job of reproducing the video you pointed us to I'd want a week. It would probably be done in 2 or 3 days, but I'd want a week. There's a lot more stuff in there than a clever script and a nicely produced audio track. This kind of stuff is not that hard but it is notoriously time consuming.
BTW, the entire video you showed us could be produced in Power Point or Keynote in about the same time, may be even a little quicker.

  • Night vision in After Effects?/ Transferring a style from PS to AE??

    Hi,
I am just starting out using adobe software, Im currently doing a job for which I need a style/mask to make a video clip look like it was shot in night vision.
Is there any way I can do that in AE?
I have done it in photoshop so I have been trying to save it as a style and transfer it to AE but I'm not having any luck!
Can anyone shine a light on this for me?
    Cheers
    Tim

A Night Vision animation preset comes with After Effects.
Type 'night vision' into the search field in the Effects & Presets panel in After Effects.
For more information about animation presets, see the
"Animation presets" section of After Effects Help.

Hi I'm thinking of buying Adobe After Effects CC for my MacBook Pro. But I am worried it won't work. Here are my specs 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB Ram, 1333 MHz DDR3,13-inch (1280 x 800) are my displays and I'm up to date with latest software. I need to know if this will work on this Mac and or if there is any other After Effects that will work.

The display would not. However, your model does not have a discrete GPU, and the integrated (Intel 3000) would not meet CS6's requirements (any CS6 software) alone.
    However:
    Standard VRAM:
    384 MB
    Maximum VRAM:
    512 MB*
    Details:
Apple reports that "memory available to Mac OS X may vary depending on graphics needs. Minimum graphics memory usage is 384 MB". *If upgraded to 8 GB of RAM (or more), 512 MB will be reserved for video function.
In other words, you would need to upgrade your RAM to 8 GB. The VRAM (video ram) of the processor can exceed its specifications if you upgrade your memory to 8 GB. In order to run the software, you would have to upgrade your RAM first:

  • How to save an After Effects animation for use in Captivate

Any tips on how best to save an After Effects animation for use in Captivate 7?

After Effects files can be rendered as MP4, you can insert them as video in Captivate.

    Greetings,
I am using the After Effects demo for Mac OS X.  The tutorials I want to follow require Cyclore plugins that are suppossed to come with After Effects, but I can't find them.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 then After Effects CS3 for Color Correction?

    Hello All,
I'm at a bit of a loss here, it seems like it's a no brainer to be able to do this. I'm trying to edit my film in Premiere and then use After Effects to do color correction using Color Finesse 2. But there doesn't seem to be ANY way to keep a project so you can continue to edit in premiere while you also keep all your color correction??
You can do color correction in AE and export a premiere project but premiere won't recognize the Color Finesse Filter so you lose all you color correction!
Or I can edit the whole project in premiere and open it in after effects to do color correction, but then if there is a single edit change that needs to be done in premiere again i've once again lost my Color Correction to bring it back.
Is this really the case that I can't use these expensive packages together this way? It seems like there has to be a solution! If Adobe just made it so Premiere kept the "links" to your filters in the project, instead of killing an unrecognizable one. Then when you opened it back in after effects after your edit your Color Correction would still be there.
    Any one have any advice?
    Thanks,
    -Ethan

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, all good ideas.
Aanarav, Your idea to just get Color Finesse for premiere I suppose I could do. It's $545 which isn't exactly pocket change, but it would probably be worth it, if there is another way other than breaking the bank book for software I already own i'd like to try to get away with it.
    Steven Gotz
Dynamic link is unfortunately a feature only of the production studio package which is like $1100 upgrade from what I have...so that's kinda out of the question for me.
    Jon Sands
Great idea here. I really thought it might work since premiere seems to use what are called after effects plugin files too. But after copying and pasting for a while it doesn't look like it actually sees it as a plugin anywhere I paste it. :( If anyone knows of a way to get that to work I would be seriously grateful!
I guess it sounds like the only way out is to spend cash, sigh such is so often the case is seems.

  • I have the desktop version of adobe after effects CS6. Is there a way that I can upgrade to after effects CC for free?

Would I have to pay or do I upgrade for free?

Ned is correct upgrades are never free except for the rare occasion when the manufacturer offers it on a new purchase of something that's about to release a new version. e.g., Toshiba offers Windows 8 upgrades on some of their new computers with pre-installed Windows 7. (except the truth is pc's with Win 7 installed are priced at least $125 more than the same exact pc with Win 8 pre-installed)
I've never seen Adobe offer free programs or apps - especially upgrades. If you buy one of their older versions of Creative Suite you can find really good prices though. Like CS5 premium versions are going for as low as $300 U.S. dollars.
I will also add that you should be 100% sure that CC After Effects has something you want and KNOW how to use. As Ned pointed out things change and CC may not be what you think it is. Adobe might offer you a free trial period of 2 weeks if you purchase something else....

  • Is Motion or After Effects best for animation of High res. photographs

Hi everyone. I’m a novice when it comes to Motion, having worked more with FCP, and I am encountering some confusing differences!
I’m making an animation from a high res. Scanned ‘photograph’ of a flower, and I hope to maintain the great image quality, plus working with a short sound file (breathing) as a guide for the movement. (The final output is going to be large scale projection using a HD projector, which I understand is 1920 x 1080, with smaller versions for pre-view purposes.)
The move to Motion from FCP has phased me (co-decs, pre-sets etc.. so many options) I could re-size it to suit, DV, HD or most of the ‘sizes’ supported by Motion but I’m lost as to which settings would be best for my purposes.
I have done various tests with different pre-sets and have found that the longer and more complex the animation gets, the more jittery the playback is. I am wondering if there is a way I can work with Motion that resolves the the perforamnce thing, or if what I am doing ( length and size of animation) would be more suited to After Effects.
I love Motion, esp. the language used in the manual and would prefer to stay with it.
Thanking you all. I really want to understand this whole ‘video’ to ‘still-image’ move I’m making.

First of all, you could do your video in either program and would likely get similar results (depending on your relative skill in each program). There's certainly no reason not to stay in Motion if you're happy with the interface. After Effects has just as many confusing settings as Motion when it comes to output so you're probably not going to feel any better there.
Considering your output, I would start your project with the Broadcast HD preset. That will give you the 1920x1080 frame size which should look great on your projected screen. I would tend always to work in an HD framework when working with stills since typically they'll be of high quality.
Make sure your stills are prepped properly for video (which is different from how they would be scanned for print work). Scan them in at a good size resolution 2500 px along the longest side at 72 dpi (high dpi is not necessary for video work). Also, use uncompressed pic formats like TGA, TIF, or PSD.
You didn't mention how long the sequence was, and length does make a difference at times because Motion is run primarily through the graphics card as opposed to the processor. This is a primary difference between Motion and AE.
When you are talking about jittery playback, keep in mind that it's the gfx card that is providing the "real-time" playback to begin with. So the larger the project, the less likely that the card is going to be able to play back in real-time. If timing is an issue you can change the view to draft (default is normal), or you can do a RAM preview (CMD+R). AE has NO real-time playback without a RAM preview, so keep that in mind.
One more thing. There are several ways to do the same thing in Motion. Some of them put more pressure on the card than others. Keep your project as simplified as you can while working, and turn off things like thumbnails and previews to speed up performance.
    Good luck,
    Andy

  • After effect videos for nonprofits

    Hello,
We are starting a new social enterprise to promote free eBooks and culture in general. We are a nonprofit and an after effects video explaining what we do would be a good starting point for our new website  http://www.encremento.com and blog http://www.encremento.com/blog
Can anyone recommend good examples of after effect videos explaining business model or campaigns?

I see the templates, rather old, but yes, they are a good starting point for a video. But nobody uses them for the entire video. Or, few people do anyway.
I don't know anyone using them for organizational messages, but then again, many of the ones I have from http://www.videoblocks.com/ could easily be used that way.
The examples of crowd funding where basically meant to show how people communicate a message. Nothing more.
I believe that once you have your elevator pitch, start getting the thoughts into a storyboard, then think about what kind of intro will draw people into watching the rest of the video, and maybe stick around to investigate the web site, you should be able to simple translate that storyboard into a video. Select a great intro, either dramatic, or exciting, or artistic, or whatever suits you. Pick some music that matches the personality of the organization, and get a great voiceover talent from within your organization if you can.
Once you have figured out what you want to say, the rest is just window dressing.

  • After effects project for website

I am new to creating websites and I wanted to add a small after effects video to my site, but am having issues coming up with the right settings so that is loads fast and looks good web. I have a comp that is 787x459. It is at 29.97fps which I am pretty sure where my problem is. I need a swf file for the site along with the script. What is the best way to export this 3 second project so it loads fast and looks good?
Hopefully I supplies enough info, if not let me know what you need.
    Thanks

I think this is the code you are speaking of. Is there something in the code that I can edit to remove the player controls?

  • What is the Best After Effects Version for my Computer?

    Hey I have a Windows 7 with a Pentium (R) Dual Core CPU T4400 @2.20GHz   2.20GHz
RAM 3.00 GB 64bit Oberating System
Display Adapter: Mobile Intel (R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
What is the best earlier model of After Effects or maybe current for my computer type?
Or what is the best settings for After Effects to run faster for animation?
    Thanks

Unless you plan on using a very old version of After Effects, which will cause a bunch of other problems on Windows 7, you simply need more RAM.  3 GB is barely enough to keep Windows running smoothly, let alone running a RAM-hungry app like AE.  Your first priority is to put more RAM in your computer.

  • Saving After Effects CC for CS5.5 use

    Hi Guys,
This might be a stupid question, but how do you save an After Effects CC project so that it can open/be used in CS5.5?
I know that InDesign has something called an IDML file, is there something similar in After Effects?
    I'd appreciate the help.
    Best,
    Ronald

    Hi bench514,
Glad you found and downloaded the application from that page.
In addition to that link, you should be able to download CS6 applications from Creative Cloud for desktop.
    Open Creative Cloud for desktop.
    Click "Apps"
Scroll down to "Find New Apps"
Click "Sort Apps By" in the adjacent menu
    Choose "Previous Version"
Click the Install button of the application you wish to download
    Choose "CS6"
The application will begin to download
Personally, I had to reboot my computer to have these options. Try that if you have trouble with the steps I just listed.
Another way to reach the CS6 downloads page is to do the following:
    Go to adobe.com
Scroll the mouse to view the adobe.com "footer"
Click Downloads, the "CC Product Trials" page launches
    Click "Other Downloads"
On the Other Downloads page, click "CS6"
    The CS6 downloads page launches
I was also able to find CS6 applications by clicking the Search link and entering "Download CS6" in the search pod. The top result in the search is "Download CS6 applications." If you click that link, it leads you to the page to download CS6 applications.
I have raised this issue with my team. We hope to have CS6 applications more discoverable from adobe.com in the future.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • How does After Effects work for you guys?

    Love to hear feedback!

After Effects has been a stable and fabuously fun, ultimatley indispensible and valuable application on all of my Macintoshes since After Effects was called CoSA.
If you're looking for complaints, try asking, "What will not work for me in After Effects?" But that will depend on your hardware and your ability to learn this unbelievably deep and complex application.

Hi.  I just restored my mac os x (it ran out of space).  Before I restored it, I moved all of my important files, and more importantly, my adobe after effects cs5 files and applications.  But now, when I try and start it up, I get a window the pops up and says:

If this problem still occurs, please contact Adobe technical support for help, and mention the error code shown at the bottom of this screen.
