Not really a booster but a distance extender.
An Airport can "extend" the WiFi created by another Airport. It can not extend a non-Apple WiFi. You need TWO Airport units, one to function as the main radio and the other to function as an extender. I used two Express units.
Configuration is simple if you start from a factory default condition. Connect the main Airport to AC power and finally to the Internet modem (or modem/router). Open Airport Utility on your Mac or other computer and accept all of the recommendations. After confirming that it works, insert your desired administrative and WiFi passwords.
Then connect the extender to AC power. As before, open Airport Utility on your Mac or other computer and accept all of the recommendations. No need to add password info.
Do not expect the Airport to respond instantly to the configuration commands. BE PATIENT!

You would need either an AirPort Extreme or an AirPort Express connected to the Cisco router, with a permanent Ethernet cable connection.

Then, you could add an AirPort Express to "extend a wireless network" to provide more wireless coverage for the network that the Extreme or Express would be creating.
Remember that the Express can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives, so it must be located where it can receive a strong signal from the "main" AirPort.
If you don't need the Cisco wireless signal, you could turn it off.....or use that network for guests or something similar.
The bottom line here......you always need two Apple routers if you want to extend the network wirelessly.

I am also hoping that I can set up a wireless printing situation in my room using the Express or Extreme.
I am running 10.4.11 on my old MacBook Pro laptop, 10.5.something on my old desktop (MacMini).

Unfortunately, this won't work especially if you want the connection between the routers to be wireless. The two are just not compatible for configuring an extended network. However, it could work if you can have them interconnected by wire. In that case, you could configure them into a roaming network.
I don't think they want my Extreme as their router, though. They are PC.
This shouldn't be an issue as the AirPorts support wireless clients regardless of which operating system they are running.

AirPort Extreme 802.11ac boosted w/ 802.11n Express?

for the past year or so I have had a perfect set up that has worked wonderfully. It was an airport extreme hardwired to two different airport expresses. I had a perfect set up all three devices had the exact same Wi-Fi name and all three supported 802.11n. So why ruin a good thing? Well here's why…
recently we have obtained some new Apple devices such as new iPhone sixes and also new MacBook air is. All of our new devices are capable of supporting 802.11ac. So now I have decided to purchase the new airport extreme sixth generation which supports this new protocol of 802.11ac.
My question is this, if I have my main airport extreme configured the same way I used to have it, but now I have airport expresses that do not support this new 802.11ac protocol, am I doing myself a disservice? The boosters are located on our third level in the master bedroom where where most of the surfing is done with the newer 802.11ac devices.

I wish that my airport express is also supported the new protocol so that I can be sure that my entire house is covered by 802.11ac. There's nothing wrong with using 802.11n, but the reason I purchased the new extreme router was to take advantage of the faster and stronger signal of 802.11ac.
The airport expresses that I am running in my house are the newer white ones that looks to be the same shape as an Apple TV. These are not the ones with the FlipOut prongs that plug directly into the wall but instead they are the ones that have a regular power cord and it look like small little hockey pucks. Well, squares versions of hockey pucks that is.
this entire post was verbally dictated using my iPad air, so hopefully I have caught all of my typos or incorrect wording. But I think you can get the general just of my question here. I was hoping I would not need to use the airport expresses to boost the signal, but I think my home might be too big for one single router located centrally in my basement. I have it as Close to the ceiling as I could get it so the second floor is completely covered and most of the upper floor is covered and the entire basement is covered of course. It's just a few rooms that are above the garage and a few further rooms such as kids bedrooms and very important, the master bathroom. We all know how important that is. Yes and no.
Yes, if you want "ac" capable devices in a remote location near the AirPort Expresses to connect at "ac" levels......because they won't.
No, if you need the extra range provided by the Express, and don't mind that the "ac" devices connect at slower "n" speeds through the AirPort Express.

You can't, if all the AirPorts are producing a signal with the same wireless network name......since the MacBook Air will connect to the wireless access point with the strongest signal.....not the AirPort with the fastest signal.
IF....you assigned a different name to the wireless network that the Express devices were creating....then....you could "point" the MacBook Air at the basement AirPort network created by the AirPort Extreme 802.11ac down there.....but chances are, the MacBook Air will never connect at "ac" levels since they are carried on the 5 GHz band, which is much weaker than the 2.4 GHz signals.
In other words, 5 GHz "ac" signals are pretty much "same room" or "line-of-sight" signals. 5 GHz just won't penetrate walls and other obstructions nearly as well as slower, but much stronger 2.4 GHz signals.
The bottom line.....if you want the MacBook Air to connect at "ac" level speeds in the remote location, you will need another AirPort Extreme 802.11ac product in place of at least one AirPort Express, maybe both.

Loss of download speed using airport extreme and express.

I have Wifi using an Airport extreme base station and an airport express extender. However, the download speed drops from 21 Mbps to 8 Mbps. Any suggestions to boost the express other than an ethernet connection which would be difficult.

Temporarily, power down the AirPort Express and take speed measurement at that exact location.
Whatever that is.....likely in the 8-10 Mpbs range......is what the Express will try to "extend".
In other words, the Express can only extend the bandwidth or speed that it receives. It cannot make the connection that it receives go any faster. In that regard, the term "repeater" is probably a more accurate description of what the Express is trying to accomplish.
If you want the Express to extend faster speeds, then it must be located closer to the AirPort Extreme. In addition, anything that you can do to reduce any obstructions in the signal path between the AirPorts will help.
Ideally, you want a line-of-sight relationship between the AirPorts to help reduce the amount of speed loss that occurs with any wireless connection.

Need help creating network of 1 Airport Extreme & 2 Airport Expresses!

Please somebody help me! I've literally been trying to get our home network to function for months now. I'm seriously about to cry if i can't make it work.
Here's the situation:
Our apartment is long and narrow and probably has lead paint, so our wifi, powered by a brand new Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11n router (named Igor) connected to a comcast modem doesn't reach the whole house. So we got 2 Airport Expresses to place throughout the apartment (named Sven and Svetlana) to help boost the signal.
First i tried to set up Igor to 'Create a wireless network" with the option 'allow this network to be extended' and the connection sharing set to 'Share a public IP' and i set up Sven and Svetlana to 'extend a wireless network' and the connection sharing was set to 'share a public IP'. Everything else was automatic or default pretty much. I got it to work but the connection was really weak and dropped out a lot.
Then i tried setting up a WDS network. no luck there either. so i went to the apple store and they told me i had to hard wire them all together using ethernet cables (roaming network i guess) to compensate for the ****** network acoustics in our place.
So...i ran 1 ethernet cable from Igor down the hall to Svetlana and another from Igor further down the hall to Sven. I set up all 3 to 'create a wireless network' and gave them all the same network name and password. i left the 'allow this network to be extended' option unchecked on all 3 and put them all in bridge mode and automatic settings for the radio mode and channel selection. After about 50 restarts i finally got it to work. Things seemed great for a minute until i realized that my laptop was the only one in the house that could connect to the internet. When i tried to troubleshoot the problem using network diagnostics and restarts, i eventually got my roommate's laptop to work but then mine stopped working.
i've tried changing Igor's connection setting to share a public IP address and leaving Sven and Svetlana's in bridge mode. I've tried changing the 'configure IPv4' setting from 'using DHCP' to 'manual' and entering in identical info for all 3 in the TCP/IP section.
no matter what i do i still have no idea how to make this work for multiple devices in our apartment. I really don't understand that much about networking but i am great at following directions. Please please please please help me! I'm desperate.

In a "roaming" network, the router connected to the Internet modem should NOT be in bridge mode. In this case that would be your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). That is because you want it to provide both NAT & DHCP services to both AirPort Express Base Stations and the network clients.

How to setup a network with a time capsule, airport extreme and an airport express?

First I want to make it clear all my knowledge off wireless networks is going on forums on the internet, before a couple of months ago I didn't realize wireless networking was so intricate so forgive my lack of experience.
I just bought a time capsule (today, 4th generation), I have an airport extreme bought in January 2011 (they just got refreshed so mine is now one generation old) and the same with my airport express (bought in January).
I originally bought the airport extreme and setup a wireless network using the dual band setup. I have no issues with the 5ghz network and most of my devices run on wireless n so I had no issues with them. my only two wireless devices that can not use the 5ghz network is my iPhone 4's which use wireless n but it has to use the 2.4ghz signal. Problem is in my apartment I am bombarded with other peoples 2.4ghz networks so my signal is terrible 10-15 feet from the airport extreme. Near my extreme I am getting signal ranges around 15mb to 20 mb. When Im about 15 minutes away in my bedroom (so one wall in between) my signal plummets to 1-2 mb. sometimes as low as 0.17mb which is not good. I got the airport express to extend my range and placed it in my bedroom. . After setting up the airport express the signal still was terrible. I researched and realized that if the signal strength ***** then the airport express cant boost the signal as much which makes sense in hind sight. I then researched setting up a roaming network or a WDS network. Per research a WDS network was not recommended b/c I was not using a wireless g network. I attempted to create a roaming network and then realized that you can not use an airport express in a roaming network. This has led me to now buy a time capsule.
First, in my setup do I or should I have the time capsule as the primary? I believe its more powerful than the airport extreme but Im not sure if that matters in a network that is distributing wifi from ethernet (thats how I am connected the extreme and the time capsule)
so can I do
cable modem ETHERNET Airport extreme(in the living room where its always been and works great in that immediate area) (3rd generation) ETHERNET Time Capsule(in the bedroom where I usually get poor signal) (4th gen) and then an airport express connecting to the 2.4ghz signal in the bedroom where the time capsule also is EXTENDING the wireless range?
or should it be the time capsule first bc its more powerful?
I tried setting up this setup and everything is green but I don't know if what I am doing is actually working on full cylinders b/c I am confused on some aspects. mainly on the airport extreme which is the primary device I have under the wireless tab selected create a wireless network and on the time capsule it also is on create a wireless network with the network name being exactly the same. Should it be changed to extend a wireless network? and then bridge mode? Should I have different channels for the different devices that are on 2.4ghz?
I am open to hear ANY suggestions, or ideas to improve my setup. I have no wireless g devices. The only device I need 2.4ghz for is my iPhone 4's but they both use n also. All my other deivices connect on 5ghz and my 5ghz network is decent, a lot better than the 2.4ghz network atleast.

You wrote so much that I find it hard to address all your concerns. However, here are some thoughts:
1) I'd configure the Time Capsule as the "main" router, connected directly to your cable modem. Configure it to "create a wireless network" and to "Allow this network to be extended". Configure the other devices to "Extend a wireless network".
2) Put any device that's extending the network half way between the main router and the wireless clients. If the signal from the main router is weak at the cllient's location, then the extending device will also receive a weak signal.

Yes,, if you plan to connect the AirPort Time Capsule to the ASUS router using an Ethernet cable connection that will remain fixed and permanently installed at all times.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so

Airport extreme & express - I am tearing out the little hair i have left !!

I have just bought a new imac (with intel chip) and i am wanting to locate it downstairs but the room is in a wireless deadspot.
I have a pc upstairs connected to a bb cable connection. I have now replaced my belkin wireless router with an airport extreme base station and an airport express to act as a booster for the imac downstairs.
i have installed the extreme base station ok and it works for the pc which is hard wired to it and wirelessly for the imac when in range. I am having problems trying to set up the airport express as a relay station.
Every time i configure the extreme to act as a wds and then add the airport express it cuts off the pc connection and the imac, I must not be doing the settings correctly in the airport admin - is it something to do with sharing ip addresses ??
I have followed the instructions on this site but still having probs - can anyone offer help or guidence please

Thanks for your great advice and assistance. I have read the various articles that you linked and will try the new extended configuration using my old 4th gen as soon as my new 5th gen extreme arrives from Apple. I may also try using the express as well by going off in a somewhat different direction on the upstairs floor where the primary base unit is connected to the cable modem. My original reason for upgrading to the new 5th gen was not because the range and signal strength were inadequate, but rather to try and get some improvement in the wireless download speeds from the 4th gen extreme and the extended express. My Mac using an Ethernet connection from the extreme was delivering download speeds of 49 to 50 Mbs all the time, while the wireless download speeds to my new iPad or my iPhone 5 were only about 15Mbs coming from the extreme and 7-8 Mbs if I was downloading through the express. I have been reading lots of comments on this subject for over a year now, with many others experiencing the same problem, but Apple never really acknowledging that there was even an issue. The only solution seemed to be that people who upgraded to the 5th gen. we're getting much better performance across all performance issues. Here's hoping for success in the next few days. Airport extrem working with expresses to create a powerful network, but how

I have one extreme base station and 3 expresses in a 3 story house with a basement. My network base is on the 3rd floor and I want the base station to link from that one to others to boost the signal. I thought I had it all set but am not getting good signal at all. Oh and I have 8 total computers: 4 pcs, 1 Powerbook G4, 2 Imac Intels, 1 Macmini intel.
3 Pcs are hard wired the other wireless and all the Macs are wireless.
There is a dlink systeme set up that was implace before and used for wireless but with the new Macs im switching to Airports. Should I git rid of the Dlink wireless router?

You will need to replace the D-Link with the Airport Extreme.
Step 1
Configure the Airport Extreme so it is working as a single wireless router - do not touch the WDS tab in other words where it was before you started.
For ease use a new network name and security.
If necessary do a reset.
Wait ten minutes
Step 2
Factory reset the Airport Express.
Plug the Airport Express in.
On your Mac remain connected to the Airport Extreme wireless network.
Run the Airport Assistant say that you want to configure a new base station.
It should find the Airport Express and ask you some questions, confirm that you want to extend the network of the Extreme network, in other words extend an existing network.
Once it has configured both Airports.
Wait ten minutes.
Repeat Step 2 for each of the remaining Airport Express units.
You may want to reconfigure the middle Airport Express as a relay unit instead of a remote unit.
You are good to go.

Which is better? Airport Express or Airport Extreme?

I have a 2 story house currently and am using a B router. I just got a MacBook Pro and am wanting to update the router. Comparing the two online, it looks like the Express and Extreme are the same speed, is that correct? What router is the best for me?

This was very helpful....and worked for about 1 minute, but it stopped and I am stuck. Here's what happened...
Extreme setup was fine. Configured as suggested. Express finally got configured (you know, the light has never been green until yesterday, in use for three years, but has always worked with my iTunes and playing music from the laptop - must have been minor problem).
I pulled the internet radio to the laptop, played on my stereo connected to the express. It was buffering a lot, so I moved around a bit, seeing if it would affect the quality and signal strength. It stopped playing or I stopped it (can't remember). And eventually the play options at the bottom of iTunes (Computer....Stereo) went away.
I rebooted the express, both express and extreme lights go back to green, and I tried to play. The iTunes on the laptop said it was connecting, but it wouldn't connect. After a few tries I got an jumbled error message, with most of the text was in Chinese characters. Obviously something was going on. Light now flashing amber on the express. I would reboot to try to connect again and would get the same error message, or it would say someone else is connected to that speaker.
Further, in Airport Utility, unless I reboot the express, only the extreme shows up. I assume the express is part of the extreme network and not recognized as a stand alone unit.
What does this error mean and how might I trouble shoot this? My internet source comes to the house in one location only, and to a Siemens wireless router BTW. I ethernet connect the extreme to this unit. Ideally I would find some way to extend or repeat the signal to get me closer to the stereo...are there any options for this? I can just use the Siemens router, but was thinking the extreme might help boost the system. I feel like I have to stand in the middle, between the extreme and the express, to receive the internet signal and send the signal to the stereo. I have another express...can it be used in anyway to extend the signal in, and/or out?

Airport Extreme - Boosting signal?

I just moved into a new apartment, and my Airport Extreme works great in the living room or office where I keep it. But when I go down a hallway (about 25 ft. away from the Extreme) and into the bedroom, I'm lucky if I get half a bar.
Any way to get a stronger signal? I've tried playing with the different channels but that didn't seem to do anything.
Would purchasing an Airport Express boost the signal in the bedroom?
Oh, and FYI, the Airport Extreme was purchased in July.

It should, but most specifications are based on an open area with no other form of Wi-Fi interference present. With this type of environment, all wireless routers can reach far greater distances. However, as you can imagine, real-life situations can differ greatly from manufacturer's specifications, and at best, they should be only considered as guidelines.
Apartment complexes, university dormitories, etc. then to have high concentration of Wi-Fi operating and any of these near to you could interfere with your Wi-FI. A handy (& free) utility, iStumbler, (if you're not already familar with it) can help you "see" what other Wi-Fis are present. I would recommend looking for those with the strongest signal values and what channels they are oprerating on ... then, change your AirPort's radio channel to one at least 3-5 channels away. Once you can verify that you are getting the best performance and range posssible, and then, still require more coverage, would I recommend adding an additional base station.

Configuring WDS w/ Airport Extreme Dual-Band 802.11n & Express 802.11g

I currently have an Airport Extreme Dual-Band 802.11n Model: A1301 (located downstairs) and an older Airport Express 802.11g Model: A1084 (located upstairs) which I had been using to stream iTunes to my upstairs stereo (which worked flawlessly). Recently a friend of mine recommended that I reconfigure my network to a Wireless Distribution System setup which would allow me to create a remote wireless node which improves my wireless signal strength upstairs, allows an interface to Airplay to play our music from our iPod's/Pad's and also provides an hard-wired Ethernet connection for my newly delivered Network Extender for my cell phone. So I followed the URL: support.apple.com/kb/HT4262 to assist in this conversion and found that I was unable to configure my network as desired. While this documentation is very good, there is one snafu that I worked out that finally allowed a successful setup. Follow the instructions for:
- Connecting a WDS main base station to the Internet
- Configuring a WDS main base station
- Configuring a WDS remote base station (See last line of instructions for the correct WDS Main ID)
Ensure all Wi-Fi base stations are powered on and allow them time to appear in the AirPort Menu Extra.
From the AirPort Menu Extra, select an 802.11g Wi-Fi base station to configure as a WDS remote.
In AirPort Utility, select the WDS remote Wi-Fi base station in the Base Station Chooser, and click Manual Setup.
Select the AirPort icon from the Toolbar, and click on the Wireless tab.
From Wireless Mode select Participate in a WDS network.
Click on the WDS tab.
From WDS Mode, select WDS remote.
Enable Allow wireless clients (see the first note below).
If not already supplied, enter the 2.4Ghz AirPort ID of the WDS main, then click Update.
There are two Apple ID's for the dual-band Extreme (2.4 & 5.0Ghz). Be sure to use the 2.4Ghz ID which is listed under the "Summary Tab" of the utility. What is confusing is that in the AirPort Utility, when you position the mouse cursor over the graphic of the Extreme on the left-hand side of the GUI, you are presented with a yellow dialog box which displays the 5Ghz ID and this can be misleading especially when you are trying to connect to an older 2.4Ghz Express ...

My Express is the A1264 802.11n model. My Extreme is the A1354 model.
The most crucial issue is the the Tivo, because the Premiere only works with Ethernet (I dont' have and wont' buy the upgraded wireless doohickey), but of course I would prefer that the Express also act to extend the signal, and I particularly want it do so using WEP access (or nothing, see below), since I have a second Tivo which ONLY works wirelessly and which ONLY works using WEP, not WPA.
Since there were so many different issues and needs going on, I was excited about the Dual Band because it meant I could potentially get 5G speeds for my iPad and perhaps the Tivo Premiere connection, while allowing a completely separate band for the OLD Tivo.
The other option I've been trying out (to accommodate the Tivo2 that can't handle WEP) is having no security, but making the networks hidden.
A third option I tried to make work was to create a "guest network" for just the Tivo2.
But what I'm finding out (it's what I always struggle with...networking is a nightmare.) is that if you take one from Column A, Column B disappears, so to speak.
The way it used to work on the non-dual band Extreme was as I mapped above, and the Tivo2 and my iPad used the wireless signal with no problem while the Express was Ethernet connected to the TivoPremiere, but it did so using WDS, which doesn't even seem to exist as a possibility, forget teh fact that it undermines the speed boost (so I read)
I've frankly never been able to understand the differences between the various modes and structures, and believe it or not I'm very smart and very comfortable with computers and Macs, having worked on them for 25 years.
And one of the biggest reasons I've had such a hard time is because of the many times that I have updated after making changes, Airport Utility tells me it worked, but nothing happens and then after too much frustration I end up unplugging and shutting down every single piece of equipment and rebooting everything and then it DOES work. Sometimes. But I can't be doing that every time I make one tweak, I'll go insane!
And the number of pin-resets I've done on the Express, the Dual band, and even the cable modem would make your head spin!
So there's my story. Kinda. Does it make any sense? At least in terms of my goals?

Airport Express Transmits To Airport Extreme Base Station Intermittently

I have an Airport Extreme set up as my base station wirelessly.  I also have an Airport Express set up to extend the range of my network.
The reason I have the air port express is that the walls of my house are very thick, so I thought that if I have an Airport Express, then I can jump the signal from one signal strength room to a week signal strength room.
The length of the house is within the 30m range.  Airport Utility occasionally can not see the AExtreme or AExpress but if I put both in the same room it picks both up.   At the low signal strength end of the house my MacBook or MacBook Pro Air Port Utility only picks up the AExpress located at this end of the house.  If I restart the AExpress then Airport Utility picks up both airports in the week signal room, then the Extreme drops out.
Q1 - Why does this happen i.e. only showing the nearest / clearest signal air port?
What I have established is that the connection to the internet is always through the wireless signal from the AExtreme (ADS Router connected directly to this).  I established this by switching off the AExpress at the week signal end of the house and finding a spot where the signal could be picked up.
Q2 - If the AEtxreme and AExpress are within the nominal 30 m range why cant my lap tops just pick up both Airports on Airport Utility.
Q3 - Can you set up both Airports such that one will boost the signal and if so how.
Q4 - When running AExtreme only why does the signal strength vary - even when sitting right next to the extreme?

On this same topic;
We have a new Extreme base station that connects 1 MBP, (wirelessly), 1 HP Laptop (wirelessly) and 2 PC (via ethernet) to the internet.
All of the computers can see and use the Extreme base station and the printer connected to it via USB.
We also have an Airport Express that the two laptops can see. This has a printer connected to it as well via USB. (both are new Canon printers and all of the software for each, and their drivers are loaded on all computers).
Both the Extreme and Express have a steady green light, their own names and are set up on the same network.
Though my MBP can see both the Extreme and Express, neither "see" each other as far as I can tell. And, the printer connected to the Express cannot be seen in either Bonjour Printers, or anywhere else.
Also, in order to "attempt" to find the printer connected to the Express, I have to disconnect from the Extreme Base Station and connect to the Express.
How can I get the printer (connected to the Express) to show up in my pick list of printers WITHOUT having to disconnect from the Extreme and connect to the Express. Also, how can we get the Express to be connected to the internet via the Extreme?
All searches here and documents I have poured though do not address this issue and we'd really like to get this straightened out. I am willing to take a lot of time to do this, but do it right.
Can someone please help me with this?

Boost my airport extreme signal

I have an Airport Extreme but I don't know the model number (is a about a year and a half old) that is in the basement of my townhouse (where the main Mac G5, cable connection and modem is). My son has an iBook G4 in his room 2 floors above and the signal is unstable and keeps dropping out when it comes to that distance and his laptop. Is there Anyway to boost the signal from the Airport so that he can have a stable connection in his room? It works fine when he uses it on the main floor, but is very frustrating for him to sit at his desk and try and stay connected. The cable company says that if I install another modem for an Airport Express to act as a boost then they will charge me for 2 internet lines.
VERY FRUSTRATED and need help.

You can place an AirPort Express (AX) or another AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) on the first floor. You can then configure that and your existing AEBS to connect wirelessly. The item on the 1st floor will be configured to extend the network provided by the AEBS in the basement.
