Is Airport express right for me?

I have a PC and hoping that I can plug it in, in my brothers room, and hope that it would be big enough to go to at least the next room over. I am very excited for the IOS 5 update this fall and want to be prepared. Now I'm in my brothers room which has the ethernet cable in it. If I hook up the airport express, form what i'm reading, I can plug it in to the wall, hook up an ethernet cable to it, and then bada-bing bada-boom I have Wi-Fi. I basically just want to set up a Wi-Fi connection so I can have my Xbox, iPod, and brother Labtop all on the Wi-Fi network. I want to be able to connect with my iPhone so if I need to print a paper from school, I can with my wireless printer, and play music from on my computer, from my phone.
Basically, will and Airport express provide me with the Wi-Fi experience I am looking for?
And if my PC is hooked up with an ethernet cable, and not the wireless, will it still be on the same network and cooperate with the other devices on Wi-Fi?
Any suggestions? Tips? Comments? I need anything I can get, thanks!
***** I don't have a "Time Capsule" or any other apple device creating a Wi-Fi network. On the opposite side of the house is where the modem is, plugged into my dads Mac, and he has a airport connection being given off on that side of the house. Do I have to have another device to create a wireless network? Is Airport express just an extender for another product..?

I'm reading this and I think you can help me.. here is the thing... I Have a wifi-Router ADSL Huawei HG520b (internet service) and an Airport Express (old generation).
I have connected the airport express via ethernet to the router huawei

Since updating to Yosemite my airport express (used for airplay) connects for a short period then drops, the error message "An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “Kitchen”. The host cannot be reached."  Has anyone else had this problem

I'm having the same issue.  Haven't found a workaround.  I use a main TimeCapsule as my main router, also have another TimeCapsule that extends the network, three Airport Express and an AppleTV.  For whatever reason, the two AirportExpress that I have in a different rooms cut out.  I only have 600 square foot apartment so it's not that big, the signal should be strong enough.  Airport Utilitiy reports the signal strength to be strong on all devices.
I'm using all new equipment, a new MacPro for my music, new TimeCapsules, new Airport Express, new everything with the latest Yosemite software.  Very frustrating.  My Airplay used to work very nice and now I'm constantly having issues and restarting my network.  I did a fresh install of all my software on my MacPro when I got it in January so it's not as if it's an old machine with old software, everything is new within the last 6 months.
The only workaround I found so far is to unplug the devices and to plug them back in.  Since upgrading to Yosemite, I'm restarting my Airport Express at least twice a week.  Very annoying.

  • Is airport express needed for an airprinter

is airport express needed for an airprinter? I'm confused about the concept. Pls help

The concept is that you need a printer that is AirPrint compatible if you want to be able to print from an iPhone or iPad, etc without adding additional software.
Apple updates the AirPrint compatible list from time to time, but you can get a general picture of AirPrint compatible printers here:

I just bought a new Motorola modem. Do I need to reconfigure my Airport Express? For some reason we have WiFi even though the amber light is blinking.

Typically, when changing out networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power reset of all of your networking equipment.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Airport Express added for iTunes

I've got my AEB up-and running in a N network.
Now I would like to add an Airport Express wirelessly for Airtunes purposes.
I've read the document "Designing AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility" and I'm still not sure about the configuration.
How should I configure the Airport Express to connect to the existing N network.
There are several possibilities: remote, relay, WDS, extending ...
Which one to choose and why?
Your help is very much appreciated. Thanks.

    William,
I just added an Airport Express N w/ AirTunes to my existing Network that has an AirPort Extreme N. I initially added it as an extension to my network, but my Internet connection dropped frequently. This was because the Extreme and Express where physically located too close to one another; therefor I switched the Express to only just join my existing network instead of extending it and haven't had any problems sinces.
I think it really depends on the distance your stereo is from your current base station. If your stereo is on the other side of the house extending it would probably be beneficial; however it they are in the next room from one another I would select to only join the existing network instead of extending it.

  • Airport Express setup for Internet

Alright, I just want to make sure this cannot be done, as the documentation with Airport Express isn't clear to me.
    My setup is this:
    - Wireless Model (D-Link from Comcast)
    - 1 desktop hardwired (XP)
    - 1 Laptop hardwired (Vista)
    - All 3 above are in the Office in front of the house
I connected my Airport Express in an outlet in the living room, in the back of the house close to the back patio. No ethernet cable connected to it, just the Audio/RCA cable, that goes into my receiver. 2 outdoor speakers connected to the receiver.
I use my iPhone to connect to iTunes on my laptop, to play music outside.
So my iPhone sees 2 wireless networks:
    - Comcast
    - Airport Express
From outside, the signal for the Comcast (D-Link is almost unreachable, because it's too far. So I use the Airport Express, which is perfect. Problem is that I can't access the Internet with it.
Now, is there a way to configure the Airport Express so I can access the internet, without connecting an Ethernet cable to it?
The Airport Express is too far to have an Ethernet cable attached to it...

Guys, the Express is too far to have an Ethernet from the main base to the Express connected (unless I run a cable through the wall, etc...) but close enough that they see each other.
The only problem is that my iPhone can barely see the main base from my backyard, but the signal is much stronger when connecting to the Express.
Again, I cannot access the internet that way because it doesn't have DNS.
So you're saying that if I set it to "join an exisiting network", then I would only see 1 network with my iPhone and still get a good signal from my Express when in my back yard?
Or will I still have to choose which network to connect to?
Rememebr, right now, my iPhone can see 2 networks (Comcast and Airport Express).

  • Is Airport Extreme Right For Me?

I am moving into a new apartment and will be living on my own. My MacBookPro OS 10.5.1 will be the only computer on the network. i would love to be able to print wirelessly and also play my itunes through my stereo.
I am worried that my all-in-one printer (HP Deskjet F4180) will not work through the Airport Extreme. Is it really as simple as plugging in the USB cord? When I looked on HP's website for wireless printer accessories it seemed like it would cost me over $200! Would I also be able to scan through airport? If amazingly, i could print and scan wirelessly, I think I would buy it.
Also, when I activate my Comcast internet at the new apt, do I still need to buy comcast's router? Or can I just plug the ethernet into the Airport? Again, I'd love to be able to just tote my MacBookPro around my apartment and print, browse, and rock out without any cords!
    Thanks!

I have been looking at iFelix's list of compatible printers for the new and old airports and found it VERY helpful. Can anyone recommend the BEST all-in-one printer to be used over airport? I do not need to be able to scan wirelessly but I need an all-in-one available to me.
I am very pleased with my wireless Canon MP600R
I also found that my Canon i860 works with the old airport extreme. Is the new one so much better than the old one that I should try to keep looking for the right printer?
If your printer works with the old base station then it will (probably) work with the new one.
Or would my i860, internet, and airtunes work sufficiently on the old model which I could find on craigslist or so?
Remember to use AirTunes you need to use the Airport Express and not the Extreme, the Express is still available.

  • TIme capsule replaces Airport Express - method for success

I just got a 1TB timecapsule to replace an airport-express as our home wireless internet router - as well as keeping data backed up.
a couple of questions for those who may have successfully done this:
what is the best process to swap out airport express function with Time Capsule?
    - (the apple manual assumes too many things go well and provides little detail on actual steps).
    - if both devices are on to copy info from AP Express to Time Capsule, I end up with an IP conflict (each wanting to be 10.0.1.1) and I only see one at a time -- one on my home network, the other on the Time Capsule's default MAC-id based network.
    - also, the Time Capsule tells me that I should update the firmware. except, since it's not hooked to the internet yet (not configured) it can't actually complete this step....how's that supposed to work?
suggestions, links to the right article in the apple site?
    thanks

    Hi
I never had very good luck with saving configurations and re-importing on my current Airport menagerie -- so I hadn't gone this route (also figured the two things would be incompatible).
However, I did just as you suggested and the Time Capsule imported the Express configuration readily, and aside from having to change a couple of security settings, rebooted fine.
For some reason, then the Time Capsule started working just like the Air Port Express. But, when I changed the name of the TC from Express back to something 'Time Capsule' and restarted - it was back to the old unresponsive way it was.
    - so I went through this re-importing exercise several times.
When things finally stabilized, I noticed that the TC had some ups and downs with my ISP in getting an IP assigned. THis could have been from the ISP acting up the last week or so...or maybe the software?
But in the end - Time Capsule is up running and backing me up wirelessly.
Next trick is to add the Airport Express back into the network so we can stream some iTunes.
    Thanks for the idea.
Oh - I guess this might also be of note - I hardwired the TC up to the iMac so I could continue the Time Machine back ups while I figured out the networking issues -- and it went ahead and updated it's firmware. Not sure if that helped or hindered so far - but it's running 7.4.2 now and I'm writing this reply via the TC.

  • AirPort Express disappears for network until it is rebooted, Arp problem

    Hi,
I have just configured my AirPort Express as a remote speaker for iTunes.
After the AirPort is powered on I can access it via AirPort admin tool and from iTunes.
After a while, the AirPort can no longer be connected to, either by the admin utility or iTunes.
I am running firmware 6.3, and have reinstalled this version. The unit is around 4 months old
Anyway, what I have noticed is that the AirPort does not seem to respond to TCPIP ARP requests which means that if a computer flushes or expires its ARP cache it will not be able to connect to the AirPort.
A network sniffer shows the ARP packets being broadcast on the network but there is no response from the AirPort.
I can see that the AirPort sends out ARP requests after a reboot, but will not respond to ARP requests that other machines on the network send out.
    Any ideas?
    Ta
    Gavin

I have had the AU running at all times but the AX's would still disappear.
The latest think I have tried is "not allow wireless clients" check box on the AX units. Since I have done this, I have not had an AX actually disappear. I now just deal with music skips and chops, if I turn on more than 2 units.
I also realize that using the AX units in for an Ethernet bridge is actually slower than using the Wireless G adapter. I use wireless to transfer shows on Tivo.
At this point, I am back to square one. The AE router gives me no benefits over a linksys or other wireless router. I can't use WDS, I can't use Ethernet Bridge.
The next thing I will try is to go back to Wireless G adapters on all the Tivos, then "allow wireless clients" and the AX units. At least I will get the WDS feature and be able to extend the range on my network.
I am guessing, if I just set up the AX units they way they were before (non-wds) and use the Tivo Wireless G adapters (essentially the way my networks was originally set up minus the AE router), that everything will work fine.
I would think Apple would do a better job before marketing products to do this.

  • Airport express works for a few minutes then orange flashing light

I was given an Airport Express as a Christmas gift to stream music to my stereo whilst in the same room. I configured the AX as per the instructions. A green light showed and streaming worked fine for a couple of minutes before cutting out and the light flashing orange.
I reset the AX and tried reconfiguring but I had the same problem. I also tried configuring via ethernet but the same problem occurred again. I don't think it's a bandwidth or signal issue, as although I am a couple of rooms away from the router, my Macbook shows full signal in the same location as the AX.
If it helps I am using a Netgear WGR614 router with WPA personal security. I hope somebody can help.

my Macbook shows full signal in the same location as the AX
The "bars" really don't give you an accurate picture of the signal strength, and they tell you nothing about noise.
You might want to download a utility like iStumbler to get a different look at your network and also identify other wireless networks around you that may be contributing to the Wireless Interference that is likely causing your problems.

  • Airport Express Password for mac and windows

i have airport express in my office and i have both windows laptops and mac's, i tried to setup a password for the airport and it succeed but the problem when i try to access the airport from windows it ask for password and i use my correct password but unable to connect on it. i am using 12 digital # for the password.
now i have removed the password and all the machines able to connect even the other companies are sharing my internet
is there any way to encrypt the airport? and i want each machine to be asked for the password.
    thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
One of the advantages of OS X is it has it's own password manager called Keychain Access. Unfortunately Windows doesn't have an equivalent so you have to rely on third parts applications like Roboform. To locate Keychain Access simply click Command-Spacebar and type Keychain Access and Spotlight will locate it.
There is another tool you can try that has gotten pretty good reviews, it is:
    http://download.cnet.com/1Password/3000-18501_4-95581.html
I'm not aware of any third parts apps that work on both Windows and OS X so you may be forced to use two solutions.

  • Airport Express Ethernet for TV ?

    Will this work ?
Got a Time Capsule as my router linked to an Airport Express in another room to boost the signal - this works great.
My new TV has an ethernet input and is positioned next to the airport express. Could I plug an ethernet cable into the TV from the AE and would this work ? or is the AE's ethernet port purely for set up ?

Follow up. When you mentioned "boost" in your post, I was thinking "extend" for the Express. The ethernet port is available in the "extend" mode. I don't think it is available in the "join a network" mode, but haven't checked this.

  • Using Airport Express solely for airtunes question

I am letting my neighbor try out my airport express for airtunes but I ran into a problem setting it up. Her Mac mini Intel 1.5GHz connects to the internet through ethernet from a DSL modem. I want to put the airport express in her family room connected to a stereo. I first tested it by setting up wireless internet and airtunes (ethernet and audio cables plugged into the airport) and I was able to stream music. Then when I plugged the ethernet cable back into the mini I was no longer able to stream music. iTunes would attempt to connect for about a minute but would fail. I was also confused about what settings to use in Airport Admin Utility. I tried "wireless disabled" but then I couldn't even see it in Airport Admin Utility and I had to reset it (what is the point of that setting?!). What do I do?

Wait a second. They can't do it at the same time?
You can stream music and get on the Internet at the same time if (a) the AX is connected directly to the Internet or (b) the AX joins a wireless network which is connected to the Internet.
Can Airport Extreme overcome this limitation?
If you connect an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to the DSL modem then you could (a) connect the Mac Mini via Ethernet to the AEBS and (b) have the AX join the wireless network created by the AEBS. Then the Mac Mini could see the Internet and stream music at the same time.

  • Airport Express: Works for a while then drops

I have an Airport Express extending my Time Capsule base station. I've moved it out to the garage, and it works pretty decently even though it's pretty far away from the base station.
But in order to get it working, I have to unplug/replug to get it to connect. It lasts fine for the few hours I'm around it. But the next day when I return, it has dropped completely and the yellow light starts flashing. Unplugging/replugging resets it and it connects back up fine.
    Any idea what's going on?
    Thanks!

It appears likely that the Express is too far away from the TC to receive a reliable signal. See if you can relocate it so that it has a clear line of sight to the TC.
