Is Airport extreme as fast as wired ethernet connection?

I was thinking of using my x-mas Apple gift cards to buy a refurbished Airport Extreme base station, though I am hesitant to use it if it will be slower than using the ethernet cable coming from my wired router directly. Also, I live in a house with other people, some of whom cannot use a wireless router, one of the cables from the router comes to my room. will I be able to plug that cable into the Airport Extreme base station and use it that way?

I was thinking of using my x-mas Apple gift cards to buy a refurbished Airport Extreme base station, though I am hesitant to use it if it will be slower than using the ethernet cable coming from my wired router directly.
For reference, here are the maximum bandwidths for different networking media types, from fastest to slowest:
o Gigabit Ethernet: 1000 Mbps
o 802.11n (5 GHz): 300+ Mbps
o 802.11n (2.4 GHz): 130+ Mbps
o Fast Ethernet: 100 Mbps
o 802.11a/g: 54 Mbps
o 802.11b: 11 Mbps
o Ethernet: 10 Mbps
So, for example, if the Ethernet connection between the current wired router is Gigabit Ethernet you would already have the best bandwidth available.
Also, I live in a house with other people, some of whom cannot use a wireless router, one of the cables from the router comes to my room. will I be able to plug that cable into the Airport Extreme base station and use it that way?
Yes, that is one possible configuration.

Most of the time I use Airport Extreme using only the cables, w/ wireless off in the weekdays. Connection to the internet is via PPPoE and the pop-up value of the "Connect Using"

when creating a wireless network the pop-up of the "Connect Using" switches automatically back to Ethernet

when deactivating the wireless option the selected value of the "Connect Using " pop-up remains.
Is this a bug and how can this be solved? (AppleScript?)

Interesting. Sorry I don't have any recommendation for an automated solution.

  • Access Airport extreme disk on Hard Wired Connection

Question how do you access the USB hard disk on Airport extreme via a Mac on a hard wired ethernet connection?
I have a Mac in a room outside WLAN coverage and apart from Air Port Disk utility I don't know if this is possible.
    Thanks,

Garry, Welcome to the discussion area!
The same process as when you access the drive wirelessly.
If you are connected to the WAN port on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS), you must configure the AEBS to operate in bridge mode.

So you agree to the lose of the Airport Express removal has caused me to lose enough of a signal to make the Internet...
Sorry but I'm not sure what this long run-on sentence is trying to say.
You asked if the network could be wirelessly extended and that is what I replied to.

  • Connect Airport Extreme to existing router without ethernet cable

I am looking to connect my Airport Extreme to an existing router without the use of the ethernet cable.  The existing router is on the ground floor whilst I would like to install the Airport Extreme in the first floor to improve WiFi range on the 1st floor.  I am able to connect Airport Extreme to the router with the ethernet cable (in which case both the devices have to be close to one another on the ground floor) but unable to get Airport Extreme set up without the ethernet cable.  Is it possible to connect Airport Extreme to the existing router on a non-wired basis (i.e. without the ethernet cable) and if yes, how would be I able to do it.  Any help would be appreciated.

The AirPort Extreme can connect wirelessly.....IF.....your existing router is also another Apple router.
Is that the case here?  If yes, what model number is your existing Apple router?
If no, you will need to continue to connect the AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection.

  • Automatic switch over from wired ethernet connection to wireless (different internet networks)

I have an Imac connect to 2 different internet service providers 1) a wired connection via ethernet giving a 10mbps download speed but unfortunatley the signal can randomly drop for a period of seconds, minutes or even hours, which I then have to manually disable the ethernet connection and switch to the wireless provider, a tedious task..
I was wondering if there is a way whereby i can set the ethernet conection to automically switch to the wireless connection during the periods explained above?
    Thanks for your assictance.
    David

    OK, thanks for the update.
Let's try to figure out which device is actually providing the PPPoE service. It will be either your modem or the AirPort Extreme router.
Normally, the PPPoE connection service is established on the modem by using a web page for configuration. If you have setup the PPPoE service this way, then the AirPort Extreme must be set to Connect Using -- Ethernet.
Please use your computer to check some settings as follows:
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup > Click the Internet icon
Look for the Connect Using setting near the top of the page
It will be set to either "Ethernet" or "PPPoE"
    Which setting do you see?
Note...if you are still using OS 10.4.x as you indicate, this may not be the path to find the setup information. It may be in an older application on your computer called AirPort Admin Utility.
Sorry, I can't remember much about 10.4.x, so you may need to look around a bit on your computer.

  • Mac-mini looses wired ethernet connection

    Hey out there.
I know this topic has been covered, however i could not find a solution that works for me.
Last week I bought a intel mac-mini and got home and happily connected it to my wireless router (this all went fine)
    I am using a Asus wl500g router.
However, once i updated all the software via the wirless and moved my router closer to my mac-mini.( i am using a 1 meter Cable) it tell's me that my etherent cable is not connected.
So I swapped out my ethernet cable with the one connected to my NAS which is connected to the same router and it is still did not work, Even though it functions fine on my NAS which also had two gigabit ports.
After messing with the setting on my ethernet connection i disabled IP ver 6 and did a renew and all of sudden i had wired ethernet connection.
So i thought that i fixed it. However after the next reboot, the wired connection did not connect again and it continued to tell me that there was not cable attached. I used the same cable connected to the mini to test on my macbook (also intel) and it worked just fine. I also tried swapping the cables from my mac mini and my nas again. My nas device connected with the cable that did not work for the mac and ofcourse my mac told me that i have no cable attached.
I then tried to put my mac to sleep and woke it up again and bam.. i had wired ethernet!
Great, however after another reboot, i have not been able to get connection again or since. this has been for a few days now.
SO what i know is this:
The cables are the right length.
    The cabels work!
it should have nothing to do with the fact that my router is 100baseT cause my nas connects to it just fine which as i said also has two gigibit ports.
THe issue is on the mac side that is forsure!
I took my mac back to the store where i bought it and they tested it and they said that is fine, they must be connecting to some airport.
So, could some please tell me what i need to do to get a constant connection between my mac-mini and my router please.
there must be a way of getting it work as it works on and off at random times.
I have been a happy mac user for a few years, so this kind of issue is really puzzling, why does it not just work like most other things MAC?
Buying a airpot extreme is not an option in my books, as the rest of the my mac network functions just fine on my current router.
    Looking forward to some inlightenment.
    thanks
    Dino

    Hallo dinodam,
I am having exactly the same problems you are. Everything worked fine for a few months and now I copy you problem identically. Again, the shop in Frankfurt says everything works fine. All my other PCs and cables work.
I have been quietly going around the bend. Every now and again I have a connection for a short while and then it is gone. "Kabel nicht verbunden".
This tends to suggest that the problem lies either in the OS or the hardware, nothing external. Surely someone at Apple must be aware that there is an issue? The time I have wasted on this issue more than covers the cost of buying a new pc. Unless someone has any bright ideas, that is what I shall end up doing and send Apple the macmini back.
I should be grateful for any suggestions how to resolve this.
    Thanks,

  • Any Benefit to Airport Extreme vs. Other Routers When Connecting to Apple TV?

I have Time Warner Cable and currently I have a Motorola SURFboard SB6141 modem going to an old Airport Extreme wifi router to get to my Apple TV.
I am considering the following options:
Upgrade to a Motorola SURFboard SBG6580 modem with Wifi
Stay with my current modem and Airport Extreme
Is there any reason why Airport Extreme wifi would be better at connecting to an Apple TV, than a Motorola modem with built-in wifi?
Thanks in advance to all for any info.

Personally I would stick with what you have.
For iTunes store purchases, movies max out at requiring 8 Mbps for 1080p so provided the current wifi provides that I doubt an upgrade would help.  Does the extreme provide 802.11n?
If wifi is problematic in your house due to interference, thick walls, multiple floors etc a new router may or may not help, but the solution I adopted several years ago which I think is pretty great is using mains powerline network adapters which basically convert electrical sockets into ethernet sockets.  You stick one into a socket near your router and connect a short ethernet cable then the others (1 or many) go in sockets near the devices which will use an ethernet connection and again connect via ethernet cables.  Provided you don't have awful wiring or very complex wiring this usually works well.
I use Devolo (200 and 500) adapters, but Belkin,Netgear and many others make them too.

  • Can iPhone have a wired ethernet connection?

There are places where there is a wired ethernet connection available but no wireless available.
Is there a way to connect an iPhone to a wired ethernet network?
    Thank you.

    Thank everyone for their help.
As I mentioned before, sometimes clarity is missing.
I realize that there are no "Apple Networks". What I should have asked was "Will an Airport Extreme when connected to a non-Apple modem/router provide a wireless signal that can be used by my iPhone" - and my MacBook Pro, and my ...
There are literally hundreds of posts both here and on other Apple Discussion boards that warn/advise against using a Cisco/Linksys/Belkin/Buffalo/whatever product in the network chain (wired or wireless) with Apple products.
I am not attempting to say whether these concerns/difficulties are valid or due to a lack of experience. I am just asking, and appreciative of the response that "YES" an Airport Extreme connected via a CAT 5 cable to an old Linksys switch will work.
As someone who has suffered/struggled for years with network problems I understand the pain.
And for those of you old enough to remember --
Thankfully I did not ask "Can I connect my Iphone to the Orange Micro SCSI card on my Motorola Starmax 5000"
Thanks again to all who helped.
I've ordered an Apple Extreme and will have it surgically implanted in my excessive adipose tissue with a tattoo reminding everyone that before I have an MRI, and take off my watch and my wedding ring, that maybe someone on the medical staff should take a look at their WiFi reception.

  • Airport extreme blinking amber light error when connecting to new modem

I have just bought and installed a new modem gateway.  It is an Arris TG852G DOC 3.0 model with a built in WiFi router.
After connecting it and activating it through Comcast, I reset, then reconnected my airport extreme MD0331LL/A Model No. A1408 to the new Arris
modem, I am getting blinking amber lights on the base station.  I have internet connectivity, but I am still getting an amber light.  My wireless devices (ipad and iphones) all see the old network name and id and seem to work just fine.
When I scanned for my airport base station in my airport utility (version 5.6.1)  to try to resolve the error message I get
a message stating that the Airport Utility is not detecting any airport devices.
I cannot reset the default settings as these buttons do not work within the Airport Utility.
I suspect interference between the built in router in the Arris and I understand I need to operate it in bridge mode.  Can you please help me fix this.
The COMCAST people are extremely unhelpful, and stated that this is not their problem but a problem with my router
as they have provifded me  internet connectivity through the modem and the issue is my problem.

Try connecting an Ethernet cable from your computer directly to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to see if AirPort Utility can detect the AirPort Extreme that way.
If yes, click on the AirPort Extreme and then click directly on the word Status (2nd line on the summary page)
A window will open to explain why the amber light is blinking
If the message indicates that you need to configure the AirPort in Bridge Mode......
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below
Change the setting for Connection Sharing to Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right of the window to save the new setting and restart the AirPort Extreme
You can disconnect the Ethernet cable that you were using to configure the AirPort Extreme now
It would be a good idea to power off both the Arris gateway and the AirPort Extreme now
    Wait a minute
Start the Arris first, and let it run a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme next the same way
    You should be all set

  • Built in Airport Extreme location:  Where is it?  Connection issues

I have an iMac G5, the one prior to the iSight release with the built in Airport Extreme. I am having wireless connection issues where I either have an incredibly low signal or no connection at all. I also have an ibook G4 that has full signal strength when placed next to the imac. I have been told the antenna may be loose on the Airport card but alas when I opened the computer, there was no Airport Card to be found. I was e-mailed a diagram of the location of the Airport card and realized it was for the prior version of the imac that came with the Airport as an option. i was informed Airport is "built in". So does this mean there is no antenna that could inadvertently be knocked out? I scoured this forum for solutions and found a handful of people with identical issues but no solution. Just wondering if anyone has an answer to this problem as I am starting to lose hope. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Warren, you have what is referred to as Rev B or ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) Imac and yes the Airport Extreme is integrated on the system board and there is no antenna connection like on the Rev. A Imac. One of the first things to check is in System Preferences => Network => Network Port Configurations make sure Airport is at the top of the list, if not then drag it to the top. Another thing people have found out is Bluetooth devices can cause interferance, I can't comment with this as I don't have any Bluetooth but if you do you could try a wired keyboard and mouse and turn off Bluetooth in System Preferences to see if it changes. Good luck and post back with results, Bob :~))

  • Want to bridge two wired ethernet connections

I have a Core Duo based Mini that was just replaced with a new aluminum MacBook. I am going to re-purpose the mini as a media center device. I already have a TiVo HD unit hooked up to the same TV. The TiVo is hooked up through a wired ethernet connection, to better support streaming and the transfer large video files. Due to the visibility of the location, I would prefer not to place a hub there, and I would prefer to avoid having an extra power cord around for a hub.
I'm considering getting a USB ethernet device. Then I can connect the TiVo box to the internal ethernet port (en0) and connect the usb ethernet port (en1?) to the remainder of the network. I would then bridge the connections. Note that routing is probably not sufficient, because the other TiVo units would not detect the one on the different network. I need a bridge, which would allow all the TiVo units, including the one behind the Mini, to be on the same network and discover each other via broadcasts.
This is normally a fairly trivial thing to set up within a unix environment. I can find tons on information on how to do it in Linux. But I cannot find any info on doing this within Mac OS X.
Also, where can I find information on USB ethernet devices supported within OS X?

    GdayBruce,
Even though you don't mention it, I am assuming that somewhere in this gordian mix you have a router. Beyond that, I cannot fathom what it is you are trying to do here. You may be making things way more complicated than they need be.
I think I get that you want to connect the Mini to the network (what network, though, and created by what device??? How many "networks" are there, and what are their purposes?), then connect the one and only TiVo unit you mention to the Mini, using the Mini as a "bridge."
OK, let's just start this whole thing over. You need a router. Full Stop. One router. Full Stop. That router will be connected, no doubt, to some type of modem (cable or DSL) of course, and everything else will connect to it, either wirelessly or via ethernet. One router, one network.
Now, one way to avoid having to route cables all over the place in order to connect devices via ethernet is to create a wireless network and use additional wireless devices as "bridges." THese devices would be configured to connect to the wireless network, then provide a wired ethernet connection to that wireless network. In other words, they "bridge" the two. Older Airport Express units could bridge ethernet to wireless, but no the other way around. I'm not sure if the current AEs can bridge wireless to ethernet (they might, but I'm not sure).

  • What is your wired ethernet connection speed during Time Machine backup

I am curious as to what transfer speeds everyone is getting with a wired ethernet connection. The problem I have is I am trying to use Time Capsule as my Time Machine storage. However, even with a Cat6 cable my average transfer rate is between 250 and 300kb/s. Once in a while that rate rockets up to 16mb/s but that burst only lasts a few seconds. At this rate I am backing up about 1GB an hour. This is going to take me 7 days just to do my initial backup which is nuts. Something has to be wrong with this thing. It just can't seem to sustain a decent transfer speed.

When connected by ethernet to my iMac, I checked the transfer speed to the TC several times by moving a 1GB file and it only took a little over a minute. The 1 GB per minute speed also was consistent with the time it took to backup of my iMac harddrive to the TC over ethernet. Don't know how to explain this difference from those experiencing much slower transfer rates. Could it be that when you are connected by ethernet your airport connection is still active and the transfer of data is taking place over the wireless connection instead?? Moving data between the TC and a connected USB drive, however, is very slow for me.

The problem is not the router.. the issue is the vpn has put your computer in a different IP range with a different gateway. When you turn off the vpn the computer returns to local lan and can print.
Some vpn software allows you to set gateway to use local net instead of remote gateway or access to other webistes or local lan.
    Read up the issue.
    http://stevejenkins.com/blog/2010/01/using-the-local-default-gateway-with-a-wind ows-vpn-connection/
    Cisco vpn client..
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/239113
I did not search much.. just grabbed the first article I could find that explains the issue.
The whole point of the vpn is whilst it is connected your computer is NOT part of the Local Lan .. it is part of the Remote LAN via the vpn tunnel.
It is also a security risk using split tunnelling so often it will not be allowed.
Plug the printer directly into the computer via usb or whatever.. Local connection will work.. not local lan.
