Is AirPort Extreme Base Station the right device and reliable for my setup?

hey guys,
i got a 2012 13" macbook air, iphone5 and an 2012 appletv
ive also got two external usb3 2tb powered hdd's that i would to setup towards and use on my network.
i have videos/movies/files/music that i would like to access from the network,
so ive been looking at the extreme device and i can share via sb in the back x1 external hdd.
from what ive googled i can share more devices such as my x2 external hdd's via a powered hub, is that correct?
so my main question is..how fast is the read/copy/write going to be via through a hub?
will it lag/skip if i watch videos on my macbook or straight to my appletv, which supposedly i can do access aswell, is that correct?
just say video file will be 1gb only.. and im going to be only not even 5meters from the extreme device(network).
what transfer rate will it copy/write from and to from one device(usb3 external hdd via powered hub via airport extreme) to my mac?
what is the usb port on the back? 2 or 3?
does anyone have a similar setup or use an airport extreme device for this setup?
and my last question is...
how reliable are these extreme device?
from what i read, these devices only last like two yrs and people have had alot of problems issue with faults etc....

Speed of read/write: if you're going by wireless, you're going to be limited by the wireless speeds.  Based on my usage, it seems like wireless N at 5 GHz tops out around 5-6 MB/s (40-48 mbps) with this router.  That's fine for video streaming, but will feel slow for heavy file transfer activity.
The USB port on the back of the device is USB 2.0.  As a reminder, USB 2.0 is rated for theoretical speeds of 480 mbps, although in practice they're much lower; regardless, it's much faster than the wireless protocols are capable of.  Your bottleneck will be the wireless.
I only use a printer with my USB port, so I can't give you any real-world experience with sharing hard drives.  You can use a USB hub to expand the ports, but it will need to be a self-powered hub: the Airport Extreme won't power devices through the port.  It's also worth noting that trying to use a network-shared disk as a Time Machine drive is a bit flakey; I've read a number of reports where people got it working, but then had their backups become corrupt with time.  I haven't read any reports of people having issues with using drives for purposes besides Time Machine, though.
As for reliability, it's hard to say.  Nothing lasts forever; you'll find people whose devices failed very quickly, and some who are using generation 1 or 2 devices that are still working just fine.  I haven't heard any reports of an usually high failure rate with Airport Extremes.  Operation-wise, my Airport Extreme (5th gen) is the most stable router that I've used, and I went through four or five other routers before this one.  It's the only router that I have not needed to reboot, even after months of uptime and heavy traffic that usually choked up my other routers.  I'm very impressed with it.

  • HT4259 How do I set up an Airport Extreme Base Station (v. 7.6.1) to allow wireless network extension?

I have an Airport Extreme Base station (purchased in 2009) and an Airport Express base station (purchased in 2011 - the model that plugs directly into the electrical outlet) (both version 7.6.1 according to the Airport Utility info).  I want to use the Airport Express to extend my wireless network.  Using Airport utility setup I have a software option on the Airport Express to set it up to extend the network but I do not have an option on the Airport Extreme wireless setup screen that I can check to allow my wireless network to be extended.
All of the documentation I can find on Apple Support states that I should have an option I can check to allow the wireless network to be extended while in the wireles setup section for the Airport Extreme in Airport Utility; but, that check option isn't there.  Is this a case of my Airport Extreme base station being too old to offer that option?  Incidentally, when I try to select the extend wireless network option on the Airport Express from the Airport Utility wireless setup menu I get an error message (no details - just an error message).  The same Airport Express sets up fine if I select join a network (not what I want to do).  Am I just dealing with outdated equipment or does anyone have a suggestion?  Thanks.

Close AirPort Utility if it is open.
Temporarily, move the Express to the same general area as your AirPort Extreme and power it up and wait a minute.
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 9-10 seconds and then release. Give the Express a full minute to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear
Click on AirPort Express just below that and AirPort Utility will automatically open
Wait a minute while AirPort Utility analyzes the network and announces that the Express will be configured to "Extend" the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name for the AirPort Express and click Next
Wait another minute to allow the configuration to occur.
When you see the Setup Complete message, click Done.
Now move the Express to a location that is approximately half the distance from the AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless coverage
Power up the Express and you are all set.  Trash those old instructions.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station and IPv6 -- It just works!!!!

I have a new Airport Extreme Base Station --- in poking around and learning about the features I was astounded to see that I was accessing IPv6 sites ... yes-it supports IPv6 (native and via teredo) --- GREAT JOB APPLE!!!!

Curious, though. Were you able to make it work with DMZ turned on?
I have not tested it with the new 7.2.1 firmware but will do it later.

  • HT4259 Extending AirPort Extreme BASE STATION range

I am using an older (2006) 54Mbps AirPort Extreme Base Station and want to extend the range. I am experiencing issues with dropped or slow signals in rooms that I would consider tough to reach (basement for example). Can I use an AirPort Express to extend the range of the WI-FI and how exactly is this done? Or would I be better off updating the AirPort Extreme Base Station? It's worked flawlessly for 6 years, just have more wireless requirements.
    Thank you all in advance.

I am using an older (2006) 54Mbps AirPort Extreme Base Station ... Can I use an AirPort Express to extend the range of the WI-FI and how exactly is this done?
The short answer is yes; the longer answer is that the only way to "wirelessly extend" the range of your 802.11b/g-only Extreme is to create a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
Not only is a WDS a tedious pain to set up, even for experienced users, its performance is likely to be disappointing. It may not even solve your dropped signals or slow throughput.
There are better ways to extend your wireless range. By far the best and least expensive alternative is to connect an additional base station to your existing Extreme with an Ethernet cable. If you don't want to do that, and you understandably decide against a WDS, then your remaining alternative is to buy a newer, 802.11n capable Extreme or Express. They can use Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature that will eliminate nearly all the disadvantages of a WDS.

  • Problem w/ my Airport Extreme Base Station & Canon i250 Printer

    Hi All...
Well, I'm at my wits end...before I call AppleCare, I thought I'd post on here to see if any of you had similar issues or problems with what I'm having, and maybe a resolution(?)...
First of all, I've been using this same setup for the past 1 1/2yrs, and never had a problem with it until lately.
I cannot print reliabily over wireless to the Canon, only through the Ethernet/LAN jack.
    Here is my setup...
    - Airport Extreme Base Station (w/ telephone jack) and Firmware 5.7
    - Powerbook G4 12" w/ Mac OS X 10.4.5
    - PC Notebook (HP Pavilion ZV6000) w/ Windows XP and Broadcom 802.11b/g/128 Pre-N
    - Canon i250 Inkjet Printer (was originally a free printer..worked very well over the years)
Originally, everything was working very reliably and I never had problems... I'm "guessing" something has changed (firmware?) that has caused any print jobs sent from either the PC or Mac to pause half way through a page and hang the printer. The computer (usually the Mac) will say it is having difficulty "reaching the Canon i250".
I've one a Hard Reset on the AEBS and that has not fixed it. I've not tried Interference Robustness yet but am not sure it will work. I do not have any problems using Wireless otherwise--only with printing, and nothing has change in the setup since I first got the AEBS (except maybe firmware).
Does anyone have any suggestions or insight as to what exactly could be the problem?
Is this a bug in Firmware that I'm not able to find?
Thanks so much for your response(s).

Delete your printer using Printer Setup Utility and
add it back. Does the performance improve?
No it didn't... I deleted, re-installed twice and still nothing new...
However, if I'm printing directly from my tower (WinXP Tower) over LAN, it works fine...but does not work at all through wireless.
For a year or so, I've never had a problem and nothing has changed in this setup. I think the culprit might be the last AEBS firmware update.
I've troubleshot everything I can think of and still having issues printing...

  • I can't find an ac power adaptor for my AirPort Extreme base station.

I was given an AirPort Extreme base station, the square model, I just need an ac power adaptor. I can't seem to find one that will definitely fit. Help please?

It is easier and better to give the model number from the base.. A1143 is the oldest Airport Extreme that is N wireless.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirPort_Extreme
All the models from Gen1 to Gen5 use the same power supply.. 12v 1.8A
But it can be replaced with any standard 12v supply.. of sufficient current rating.
The real thing is expensive. It still doesn't have the Apple cord.

Buy a power supply rated at 12v 3a 4a or 5a .. any of those ratings will work well.
I generally buy 4a or 5a. as they tend to be a bit better. Although if you check they all seem identical to each other..
Check in your local market if you want one fast.. just do ebay search for 12v 4a power supply..

Power cord is probably a standard IEC computer cable.
Cheaper from HK but if you want reasonable quality pay around $10US.. cheaper can be rubbish.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station Wireless Woes

    Hi,
I just bought this dual band Airport Extreme Base Station on 3/10/2010. After I setup the Airport, I have difficulties connecting my iphone 3GS to the base station. My iphone 3GS is able to see the wireless network but not able to join it. Only my macbook pro is able to connect wirelessly. My windows PC and iphone 3GS could not.
I wonder whats could be the problem?
Some logs from the base station:
    Oct 06 23:00:04 Severity:5 Associated with station <mac address of iphone 3GS>
Oct 06 23:00:04 Severity:5 Installed unicast CCMP key for supplicant <mac address of iphone 3GS>
    Oct 06 23:00:04 Severity:5 Disassociated with station <mac address of iphone 3GS>
Oct 06 23:00:04 Severity:5 Rotated TKIP group key.
Setting of Airport Extreme Base Station:
    Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2
    Wireless Channel: Auto
    Creating a new network
    Things I have tried:
    1) Changing the wireless channel
    2) Removing the wireless security
    Thanks

I think I manage to find the problem on why my airport extreme keep on dropping connection.
    This is my connection.
Cable Modem -> Airport Extreme -> Aztech Gigabit Homeplug 1-> Aztech Gigabit Homeplug 2 -> Dlink DIR-825.
When I plug out the conenction from Airport Extreme to Aztech Gigabit Homeplug 1, I am able to connect to the wireless using iPhone 3GS. Once I plug back the connection and do a refresh the iPhone 3GS wifi connection, I am not able to connect the wireless.
Hmm, anyone faces the same problem?

Hello lvpd. Welcome to the Apple Discussion!
i want to extend the range of my old airport extreme base station, the one that is a circular pyramid. I was wondering if the airport express would work or if I should get something else.
Yes, you can extend the older 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) with the newer 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn). To do so, they would both need to be reconfigured for a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).

  • New 10.3.9 install on Pismo G3, Airport Extreme Base Station Error Network

My 10.3.9 Pismo laptop G3 with built in firewire ports worked perfect on my Airport Extreme Base Station — I just Erased and reinstalled 10.3.9 (it was working before I Erased this morning) and now my Original Airport card can't join my wireless network:
*"There was an error Joining the Selected Network"*
I zapped Pram, reset power manager successfully (date reverted).
I accessed the AEBS by a 10.6.3 Mac Pro and checked the Equivalent Password "WPA Password: ####PW###"
Radio Mode selected: 80211n (80211b/g compatible).
    APBS version current: 7.4.2
G3 sees my network as expected.
The APEBS hasn't changed (except for the recent update).
    I restarted the AEBS.
    Still get the error...HELP!
I saw the exact problem on several archived threads, but no one gave a solution or explained the problem (and I'm going blind here).
Again, for the past two years it was working fine with 10.3.9, it broke this morning after I erased and reinstalled 10.3.9.
10.3.9 is the only software loaded on this laptop.

If you just bought it I would recommend calling Apple, they can help you set it up.
Also you should consider getting a high speed Internet connection. They are very inexpensive these days and would make your Internet experience much more enjoyable. Where you live I would think you have a choice of DSL (available from most telephone companies) or Cable, which would be the quickest but also more money too.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • I have an Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (Simultanious Dual_Band) (MC340LL/A), and updated the software.  After updating no devices can connect via wifi.  Any suggestions.

I have an Appl,e AirPort Extreme Base Station (Simultaneous Dual_Band( MC340LL/A.  After updating the software, no devices can connect via wifi.

As suggested in another discussion area, (AirPort), I reset the AEBS to factory defaults. On the TV, I went to >Settings>General>Network>Configure Wireless>Wireless Networks. I could then see the generic "Apple Network xxxxx" on the TV. From my MacBookPro, I verified that I could connect to the TV by launching iTunes and noting that the TV was now visible in the "Devices" menu. Went back to the AEBS and ran through the "Setup" routine. I did NOT use the "Previous Settings" but instead, saved the old settings profile, created a new wireless network and new settings profile and enabled WPA2 Personal encryption. I then went back to the TV and went through the "Settings" routine again (as noted above). This time, after entering my WPA2 password, the TV connected to the network and problem was solved. Thanks.

After a recent iTunes update attempt iTunes no longer functions and the airport extreme base station is not accessable on our computer.  We still have wifi but cannot access the base station software.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the response. I tried that approach this evening and it didn't work for me. (Technically it worked for me, when I was hardwired into my base station, but would not work for me wirelessly, which is my main issue.)
Again, using the approach you recommended works only if I have my ethernet cable attached to the LAN port so my computer is communicating directly to the base station through the hard wire. I am able to scan for my base station and make setting adjustments normally this way too.
As soon as I disconnect from the LAN port and try to go wireless is where I run into problems. The Base Station's wireless network I created is available to choose in the top right corner of the monitor with all of the other available wireless devices/networks -- but the network I created does not have access to the internet. I am also unable to configure my Base Station wirelessly. When my Airport Utility tries to scan for the Base Station and Network, it cannot find any Apple Wireless Device. It's like the Wireless Network in my base station is not sending out a signal.
Is there a way to resolve this issue?

  • How do I open the same ports on an Airport Extreme Base Station for multiple computers at the same time?

    As the title suggests...
I have a mix of five Mac and PC's at home using an Airport Extreme Base Station as the router.   I need many ports opened on the AEBS for all of the computers- not just one computer.  (for example: three people want to play TF2 on Steam at the same time; each machine needs the correct ports open on the router).   Port forwarding  only allows me to forward a given port to a single IP, yet I need that port open for five differnt IP's, all at the same time.
How do I do that on an AEBS?
In the same way, I have a small office of four iMacs using an old airport with the same exact issue.   I would like to be able to connect to all of them remotely with Apple Remote Desktop, but the port forwarding on the airport only allows a port to forward to a single IP.   I want to be able to tunnel into the office network and log onto any machine behind the Airport extreme... not just a single IP.    I currently have it set up where I can tunnel into the office from my house, I can find the one machine that the port forwarding has been assigned to, I can log on and everything is just fine... with one machine.    How do I open the firewall for the other machines?
TL,DR version:  How do you open ports on an Airport Extreme Base Station instead of forwarding ports?   Forwarding ports doesn't work for multiple IP's.

You can open a single or multiple ports to a single device or different ports to different devices, but you cannot open the same port to multiple devices via the AirPort Utility for the Apple routers.
