Is Airport "Snow" base upgradable to support WPA?

Hi. I was just curious can the Airport "Snow" base station be upgradable to support WPA or am I stuck with WEP? Thanks.

WC, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sorry, but the snow AirPort base station (ABS) only does WEP.

  • Power Mac G3 Pismo with Airport wireless card in Mac OS X 10.4 won't connect to wireless network  with  newest Airport Extreme Base Station set at WPA Personal/WPA 2 Personal encryption.

My Power Book G3 Pismo with an Airport wireless card  running Mac OS X 10.4.11 will not connect to my new Airport
Extreme Base Station using WPA Personal/WPA 2 Person encryption.  The Airport firmware is version 9.52.  From
posts I've read online at different places indicates the Airport card should support the WPA encryption.  Perhaps the problem
is the Base Station is using a combination setting and the fault is in the base station?
    Thanks for any suggestions

Perhaps an inexpensive usb wireless adapter would work as well?
This is probably the simplest way to get the G3 connected to the wireless network.
I'll have to read up on getting an express and using it as a wireless bridge as I am unfamiliar with the concept.
The new AirPort Extreme is broadcasting a wireless signal.
A new AirPort Express could be located close to the G3. The Express will pick up the wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme, then provide an Ethernet connection to the G3 though a short Ethernet cable.
This can work very well......IF.....you keep the G3 at a fixed location, since it will always be connected to the AriPort Express using an Ethernet cable.
I do have an old Linksys Wireless G router.  I wonder if that would work?
In theory, yes. But it would have to use much older WEP "security", which is easily cracked in minutes using free tools available on the Internet. So, anyone who really wanted to get on the network could do so. It's an option, but not a very good one.

  • Port Mapping problem with a Snow Base Station

I wish to enable port mapping with my Airport Snow Base Station. (SBS) I am using an Earthlink Efficient Stream 5667 DSL modem to my SBS. I am running firmware version 4.0.9 and connecting with 10.4.3.
So -- enabling port mapping requires that the IP address on my 10.4.3 computer doesn't change, and that I then map the ports. However, I can not manually assign an IP (say 10.0.1.201) as my 10.4.3 can not connect using either "DHCP with manual address" or "manually" (where the router and subnet mask match the DHCP assignment)
    What should I do?

Do not use the "DHCP with manual IP address" - that is a mode not supported by most networking devices on the market.
What you should do: on your Mac, open System Preferences->Network->Show Airport->TCP/IP tab. Select to "configure manually". Then enter the following parameters:
    - IP address: 10.0.1.201
    - subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    - router/gateway IP: 10.0.1.1
    - DNS IP: use either 10.0.1.1, or enter the actual IP address(es) of your ISP's domain name servers

  • HP JetDirect 170X and Airport Snow - TCP/IP setup?

Let me just say first, I have no experience in this... so I want to add my HP LaserJet 1200 that I just got the HP JetDirect 170X printer server for as a wireless printer routed through my Airport. I have it connected via ethernet to my LAN port in my Airport Snow base station.
My big question is: How do I figure out the IP address for it? HP's support application is OS9 based, and doesn't see my printer in the Apple Share printers. This is the step that HP tells me to go through to get the IP address, but if it can't find the printer, I can't really get to that step.
I have Apple Share on. I have enabled printer sharing. But I can't figure out what IP address to give when I go to add it as a TCP/IP printer in the OSX printer setup utility. For kicks, I gave it the Airport IP address, thinking that's where it needed to look, and added it as a printer, and it seemed to accept that, but I still can't print to it... how long should I wait to see if something comes out? I get the "will retry in 10 seconds..." then "in 20 seconds..." once I send a print job to print.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
dual USB iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Airport Snow

Never mind. I figured it out... I didn't recognize the printer name in the Apple talk list of available printers (it came up as some weird "Carpenters/Caspers" name that I've never seen before and I thought that might be my airport picking up someone else's computer. After figuring that out, following the HP website's instructions worked like a charm when I assigned it a manual IP address.

  • Airport "Snow" Vs. Timbuktu

    Hi,
I am trying to communicate over DSL via Timbuktu from Home (a laptop) to Office (a desktop). The office machine is behind an Airport "snow" base station. The home machine plugs directly into a plain vanilla DSL modem. At home and at the office, I can get on the internet just fine.
    We're on OS 10.4.2
At the office, wireless works just fine. I can get on the internet wirelessly with my laptop. Timbuktu works fine wirelessly. Desktop and Laptop communicate, no problem.
From home DSL to office DSL, the two machines will communicate by Timbuktu only if I plug the DSL modem directly into the desktop machine. (In other words, if I temporarily remove the Airport base station.)
If I daisy chain from DSL modem to Airport to Desktop, the two machines can no longer communicate by DSL.
FWIW, the machines also communicate very comfortably via timbuktu over dialup. Each machine will answer the phone and handshake with the other.
I can ping my DSL IP address from either location to the other.
I went over all this with Timbuktu tech support. The rep was very capable. We went over the Airport port mapping very carefully. She was very familiar with Airport configuration. She said all was configured correctly, as far as she could tell. She could Timbuktu to my machine by DSL if I removed the Airport base station. If I plugged the airport back in, she could no longer connect by Timbuktu.
Apparently, there's something wrong with the airport configuration, but I can't figure out what.
Recent versions of Timbuktu use port 407 only. Older versions use ports 1417 to 1420.
In Base station settings:port mapping I see:
public port private IP address Private Port
    407 10.0.1.2 407
    407 10.0.1.3 407
    407 10.0.1.4 407
10.0.1.2 is the desktop machine. 10.0.1.3 is the laptop. 10.0.1.4 is a Windows laptop I occasionally use at the office. The router is 10.0.1.1, which is the default local IP for a router, I believe.
FWIW, the Windows machine also connects to the internet wirelessly at the office, no problem.
Nothing else is on the network at the office. There is no network at home.
I did the same port mapping for ports 1417 thru 1420, though that probably isn't necessary.
Under base station settings: internet, it's pretty simple.
    Connect using:PPPoE
    Accountname:[email protected]
Under Under base station settings: Network:
    Distribute IP addresses <checked>
Share a single IP address using DHCP and NAT <Checked>
Something must be configured wrong. Any ideas? Troubleshooting suggestions?
If you're not familiar with Timbuktu, it's a very user friendly, stable and robust product. I've been using it for years. It might have stopped working by TCP/IP when I bought my airport. I'm not sure. Can't remember.
FWIW, I'm on version 8.1.1 of Timbuktu. I have a two user license. I couldn't get this to work under OS 10.3, either.
    Thanks in advance,
    ST

    Hello Henry,
Answer # 1 I totally get, now. Thanks!
    You wrote:
    2. I don't really understand what you are asking in Question #2.
HTTP and FTP do also use ports (ports 80 and 21 respectively).
We're probably straying into the Dept. of Really Stupid Questions, here. Don't feel obligated to reply.
I've always wondered why, for instance, I can upload or download to and from an FTP site if Port 21 isn't open.
If I had to guess at the moment, I'd guess that port 21 only has to be open if a public user wants to initiate an FTP upload or download to or from my machine.
Probably same goes for port 80 and HTTP. As long as I'm initiating the download of a web page, or sending information back to a web server, maybe Port 80 doesn't have to be open. Maybe it only has to be open if I am hosting a web site on my machine.
If that's accurate, it makes me wonder a bit about the intracacies of firewalls and port mapping. My first reaction is, "Well, a port is a port, and either it's open or it's closed." I suppose ports are not quite like doors...
If this topic might be of general interest, I'd be interested. Or maybe someone can post a URL that explains this a bit, at the third grade reading level, preferably.
Thanks again, Henry. You've been great.

  • Problems with my Airport Snow. Please someone help!

I had an airport snow base station for a couple of years. I bought it used, and after some initial difficulty, I manage to set it up and it worked fine for a little while. At some point it started failing to connect and started giving me a message that it was looking for PPoE. I am using a cable connection, and the station is connected with the cable modem. I was told that PPoE is a protocol that is not used by that connection. The advise was to unplug everything and reboot. Most of the time it worked, then it started getting harder. Everytime I gave up, and retry days later, it usually worked.
Now something else is happening. When I connect it, it works fine at first, then the signal starts getting weaker and weaker until it just goes to zero, at which point no rebooting works I have to connect with the cable directly into the computer.
I know I am computer illiterate, but I don't know who to ask. The couple of friends of mine who are competent can't figure out what the problem is. Apple would not talk to me because I don't have a protection plan. The cable people are completely clueless...
I would really appreciate it if some of you could give me a hand. If the thing is useless, then I'll have to be patient and wait for a little while until I have 100 dollars to buy a new one...
    Thanks

Problems 1 through 4 are the topic of many (often long) past discussions in this forum. Though I hate to say it, I have yet to see anything that comes close to a "solution" for the problems you describe. Sometimes, Problem #3 results from radio interference which might be alleviated by changing the default channel the base station transmits on.
Unlike every non-Apple router on the market, Apple's Airport Base Station must be configured using Apple's own "Airport Utility" software application. It is not possible to configure an Airport Base Station using a web browser.
Regrettably, in your case it sounds like you would be better off continuing to use your previous Linksys wireless router.

  • Airport Utility for Airport Snow

After switching to Snow Leopard OS (10.6.2), I lost the capacity to configure my old Airport Snow base station. "Airport Utility 5.4.2" doesn't discover my base station and "Airport Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5" doesn't run in Snow Leopard OS. BTW I'll like to keep this old base station working because its "dial-up" functionality, something I need in a remote farm with no DSL or cable services. Is it a way to configure an Airport Graphite or Snow using Snow Leopard?

    HI,
Try posting in the Airport forum here.

  • Can't configure Snow Base Station - error updating configuration.

I recently found a cheap Airport Snow Base Station to use on a trip I'm taking next week. I'll be at a lake house with no broadband, only dial-up capability. I thought if I could at least go wireless, it would be more bearable, so I got the Snow Base Station since my Express nor my Extreme Base Station have modems.
I downloaded the Airport Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow, and did a hard reset on the base station. It shows up in the utility as 00-03- etc. with IP address of 192.42.249.13. When I click Configure, it says the base station has been reset and is currently not configured. I click OK to upload software to the base station, it asks for my administrator password then after about 12 seconds, it comes back and says "An error occurred while updating the configuration."
Any suggestions? It's connected via ethernet to the LAN port, it says the base station version is currently 4.0.2.
    Thanks for any assistance.

I've managed to resolve the error code by the following:
    1. Turn Off Airport Card
    2. Unplug Power Cable to Time Capsule
    3. Disconnect Ethernet Cables
    4. Wait 30secs
    5. Plug in Power Cable to Time Capsule and allow unit to power up.
    6. Connect via Ethernet to the ethernet ports on the Time Capsule
    7. Airport Utility should know locate, but importantly allow you access to configure Manual set-up
    Hope this helps

  • Airport Extreme Base Station Wireless Woes

    Hi,
I just bought this dual band Airport Extreme Base Station on 3/10/2010. After I setup the Airport, I have difficulties connecting my iphone 3GS to the base station. My iphone 3GS is able to see the wireless network but not able to join it. Only my macbook pro is able to connect wirelessly. My windows PC and iphone 3GS could not.
I wonder whats could be the problem?
Some logs from the base station:
    Oct 06 23:00:04 Severity:5 Associated with station <mac address of iphone 3GS>
Oct 06 23:00:04 Severity:5 Installed unicast CCMP key for supplicant <mac address of iphone 3GS>
    Oct 06 23:00:04 Severity:5 Disassociated with station <mac address of iphone 3GS>
Oct 06 23:00:04 Severity:5 Rotated TKIP group key.
Setting of Airport Extreme Base Station:
    Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2
    Wireless Channel: Auto
    Creating a new network
    Things I have tried:
    1) Changing the wireless channel
    2) Removing the wireless security
    Thanks

I think I manage to find the problem on why my airport extreme keep on dropping connection.
    This is my connection.
Cable Modem -> Airport Extreme -> Aztech Gigabit Homeplug 1-> Aztech Gigabit Homeplug 2 -> Dlink DIR-825.
When I plug out the conenction from Airport Extreme to Aztech Gigabit Homeplug 1, I am able to connect to the wireless using iPhone 3GS. Once I plug back the connection and do a refresh the iPhone 3GS wifi connection, I am not able to connect the wireless.
Hmm, anyone faces the same problem?

  • Importing Snow Configuration to the Airport Extreme Base station

Is it possible to import the Snow's airport saved 'base config' and 'access control list' files to the Airport Extreme Base Station when setting up the extreme? I'm considering upgrading my wireless system. I have 4 XPs and 4 Macs and would prefer not to have to re-enter any of this data or loose any downtime reconfiguring all my computers.

As far as I am aware this is not possible.
However if you configure the Airport Extreme BEFORE you turn off the Snow the downtime should be minimal.
From a security perspective, unless you have Macs running 10.2 or earlier and/or your PC wireless adapters don't support it, all you really need to do is implement WPA for a secure wireless network.
Personally to avoid potential issues I would create a completely new wireless network with a new network name. Some clients have issues with joining a new wireless network with the same network name as a previous network, especially one with a password.

  • AirPort Extreme base station as bridge - is WPA allowed?

    Hello,
I have an AirPort Extreme base station that is connected to the Internet via an older Linksys wired router. The Linksys is connected to a cable modem and acts as a router (so it's the DHCP host), while the AirPort acts as a bridge between wireless computers and the Linksys (so "Distribute IP addresses" is unchecked).
When using WEP or no security, everything works great. However, when using WPA, my laptop constantly cycles as it tries to get an IP address without any real success. I've tried all combinations of open/closed networks, different wireless channels, and wireless security types, but WPA just won't work. It's definitely supported by the wireless card and I've entered the password correctly, but no dice.
Does anyone know if WPA is supposed to work in this configuration? I noticed that another post recommended connecting cable modem -> AirPort -> wired router, but other posts recommend cable modem -> wired router -> AirPort. Not sure if it matters or not.
    Thanks for any advice!

Hi Felix, thanks for your reply.
I have a Linksys wireless card (which I cannot find right now) and an Airnet AWN154 wireless card. When the Linksys didn't work, I purchased the Airnet, which also didn't work. This is on several Windows laptops.
To answer your other question, I don't think I've ever successfully gotten WPA to work with these cards, but of course I only have my own base station to test against. My fiance's laptop (with built-in wireless) worked briefly, but was very slow and every couple minutes the connection would drop.
The reason I originally asked if WPA is possible in this configuration is because I ran across some articles indicating that WPA might not work across bridged networks, although that was for different hardware than my Airport Extreme base station.

  • Airport Express Base Station no longer supported.

Older version of Airport Express Base Station is no longer supported on my computer.  Apple Support advises to install firmware update using Airport Utility 5.6. But I cannot install 5.6 on my system (running Lion 10.7.5).  Help?  Are older Express Base Stations useless?

The easiest and quickest solution would be to use...or borrow for 5-10 minutes.....another Mac running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or a PC with Airport Utility installed on it to administer the older Express.
If that is not possible, there are unsupported methods to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on a newer Mac, but you will have to decide whether to trust an unknown source for this, and accept the fact that there will be no support if something goes wrong.
The Internet is the place to look if you decide to do this.

The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

  • Does orig. Airport card support WPA/WPA2?

Can a Mac equipped with an original Airport card (802.11b) connect to a WPA- or WPA2-protected network via a third-party router? (Any router — my question doesn't concern a particular router, but is more general in nature.) If so, are there minimum OS or other software version requirements for WPA/WPA2 support with the old card? Is there an Apple article that specifies the relevant requirements and procedures? My repeated searches for one have been fruitless, and this question comes up regularly in some forums I monitor daily where I'd like to be able to answer it confidently.

A Mac equipped with an original Airport card supports only WPA, not WPA2.
Verification of the fact that the original Airport card supports WPA is found at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107795
A Mac equipped with an Airport Extreme card (or newer) is required for WPA2 support.
I don't know of a Knowledgebase article that specifically states an Airport Extreme card is required for WPA2 support. However, that requirement is clearly stated in the older versions of Airport update software that added WPA2 support to OS X. See for example:

  • Airport express bases station no longer visible after W7 upgrade

Hi - I just upgraded my Dell Inspirion 530 to Windows 7 Ultimate.   Since doing so, I can no longer "see" my Airport Express Base Station (1st generation).   It is not visible via Airport Express Utility (5.5.3), nor as a connected device through Devices and Printers.   I believe there may be a firewall or network security (Symantec anti virus) setting that I need to configure, but do not know where to start.   The device worked fine in my Windows Vista configuration prior to upgrading, so I am confident that it is not a Express device issue.  The device shows Green, indicating that it is working properly.    Help appreciated!!!

do you still ahve signal!! i mean are you able to find the signal when you try to connect to it and use the internet?
if you are able to connect to the intenet on the same machine, did you try updating the untility software?
