Is an iphone 3gs capable of upgrading to 4g?

My provider is offering a free upgrade to 4g shortly but I am not sure if my iphone 3gs is able to take the upgrade.

Unfortunately, the iPhone 3GS is not capable of utilizing 4G data connection. You can, however, upgrade to one of Apple's newer devices, such as the iPhone 4s, which is capable of 4G, includes Siri, and uses iOS 7. Or, you can even purchase the iPhone 5s or 5c, providing your provider serves it.

I'm going to make some guesses here. You bought your phone second hand. In other words, not from Apple and not from your carrier. What you got is a hacked phone that was originally carrier locked, most likely to AT&T in the US. You are NOT in the US. (If I get any of this wrong, please tell me).
What has happened is when you updated the software, it was re-locked to the original carrier. ONLY the carrier can authorize an unlock. If it is locked to AT&T, you're out of luck as they WILL NOT unlock an iPhone for any reason.
If it's locked to another carrier, you will have to find out what carrier that is (you can NOT tell by looking at the model number) and find out if they unlock iPhones. If you can't find out, or if they do not, then your only real option is to sell the phone and purchase one from a LEGITIMATE source.

Thanks for the question. I understand you are having issue with your iPhone 3GS. You are definitely taking the correct steps, as you'll want to restore the iPhone in recovery mode. For information on doing so, see this article:

Can't make calls or sms on iphone 3gs after iOs5 upgrade?

I upgraded to iOS5 on my iphone 3gs and I am having major problems connecting to the 3g network. I can't make or recieve calls or sms, or log on to the internet over the 3g network. wifi works fine, but that doesn't help with the calls or the sms, and i can't always be on wifi for my emails. the phone worked fine before the upgrade.
i've restored the entire phone as a new phone, i've gone in to the apple store and had my phone looked at, they say there's nothing wrong with the hardware.
i live in Canada and my carrier is Rogers - of course when I call them for help they say it must be the phone not their network. they'd rather i buy a new phone and sign another 3 year contract
the only thing that seems to help is restoring network settings. immediately after doing that I can make calls, send and receive sms, and use the internet over 3g. but it only fixes it temporarily... after about 15 mins I'm back to the same problem. can't make or receive call etc.
anyone else having this same problem?
anyone know of a solution?

After 2 hours with Apple Support, which was great, we figured out the issue. 1-800-my-iphone. When I upgraded to iOS5 and started using the iCloud, I was unaware that my previous synching settings were still set to Yahoo.com where I had been sycning wirelessly in the past. So the Apple support tech showed me that I had multiple accounts in both Notes and Contacts. I had iPhone, iCloud, yahoo, Outlook accounts and my default settings on the iphone should have all been set to icloud. Syching was occuring, but not in icloud. It took a little manual conversion of some Notes and Contacts into the icloud folders in Outlook, but now everything works and I only display and use the iCloud accounts in Notes and Contacts. Apple realizes that this is an issue for those of us that were previously using Yahoo and equivalents for wireless synching and they provded my support free. Usually they charge $27. All is well.

IPhone 3GS with OS4 upgrade - using Apple's Bluetooth Keyboard

I just upgraded my iPhone 3GS to OS 4. I also bought an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard.
It's awesome except for one thing. After I type a text message and go to send it, I push the "Send/Enter" button and it just goes to the next line, it won't actually send the message. I realize the keyboard came out way before OS 4, but surely there must be a button you can use to actually send the message without having to go back to the phone each time.
Does anyone know what button on the Bluetooth keyboard you use to "send" the text or do I have to just tap "send" on the actual phone?

Iphone 3gs backup before upgrade

I just recently turned on my iphone 3gs since 2010 & It shows me the usb and itunes screen. Most likely it needs an upgrade on the IOS software
The problem is that I have over 2000 pictures, contacts and my text messages. If I upgrade the software , this will all be deleted
Can anyone advise me if there is a way in which I can retrieve the lost data before upgrading the IOS software?

Too late. The iTunes with USB graphic indicates your phone is in recovery mode, and would need to be fully restored to be usable again.
Whatever was on the device is lost forever.

Are you sure you have an iPhone 3G and not an iPhone 3 because the iPhone 3 are not capable of running anything beyond 4.2

Yes, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3406. You can also sync both to the same computer. iTunes will recognize them as separate devices and you can set separate sync settings for each. This may be of interest too: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495.

Iphone 3gs availability and upgrade

I have been saving my gift cards for a year waiting for this phone. I have the 1st gen Iphone and started my contract in April of 2008. 1) Will the Iphone 3gs be available on June 19th and 2) Will I be able to take advantage of the upgrade pricing when I purchase?

Good luck. Everyone is out of them right now. Even ATT stores are getting random drop ships in. You have to realize that this was a very hotly anticipated product, and is still in high demand. They're being shipped out as fast as they can be mfg'd. For pete's sakes, it hasn't even been ten days since the launch.

Today, I upgraded an iPhone 3GS which I preserve as an "iPod" for the children.
Well, post the upgrade the original charger simply will not be accepted!?
A respective message appears on the screen whenever I plug it in!
The same stands if I plug the original charger of the "3GS", to my "4"...
The iPhone 3GS charges perfectly well with any other "later" charger...
"Weird" or not?
Definitely weird and frustrating (because it renders the original charger as obsolete).
If this result had been known by Apple in advance, then the implementation as such was rather arbitrary.

Wifi problem with iPhone 3GS/4.0 upgrade

I installed 4.0 on my 3GS , now I can't connect wifi to my iMac ...
Therefore can't backup 2do or splash I'D which need wifi..
Any ideas apple ??

Have same problem on my 3G after update to version 4.0.
Must be beside my router to get connection, otherwise no signal at all.
Before I could be in garden 10-15 meters away with almost full signal strenght.
Works fine with Nokia N95 and several Laptops.

I lost my sync with iCal and contacts on my iPhone 3GS when I upgraded to iCloud. It worked just fine with Mobile Me.

I upgraded to IOS5 and iCloud on my MacBook Pro after I upgraded my iMac to iCloud. I keep my phone in sync with my MacBook, but now my Contacts and iCal will not sync with my iPhone3GS. What have I done wrong?

I had the same problem and believe I figured it out.
Calendars: In iTunes, with your iPod plugged in, go to the 'info' tab. De-select "Sync iCal Calendars". This fixed dupes, and did not erase any entries because MobileMe is keeping me updated.
Contacts: Whether I select or deselect "Sync Address Book Contacts, I still get duplicate contacts, but only when I look at "All Contacts". Go to "Groups" in Contacts on your iPod and select either "All from My Mac" or "All MobileMe". You get a single copy of each contact. Give it a minute or two after syncing as it takes a bit for MobileMe to update everything. At first I had a different number of contacts in each list, but a couple minutes after syncing, both lists matched.

HT1430 I just updated to ios 6.1.3 and I lost all the music that was in my iphone 3GS after the upgrade

I tries using itunes to sync the music again but it failed to transferred any songs over to the iphone. When I click on the MUSIC icon in the iphone, it shows NO CONTENT.

Also try settings>general>reset>reset all settings
If you have followed that article and restored your phone and set it up as new and you're still having that issue you may call and explain you followed the article and are still having the problem. Most likely they will either set up a replacement for you. If they ask you to set up the one time phone support agreement, and they assist you with a restore again, they won't bill you if they end up having to repair it.
