Is an Midi equipment is a must?

Hi
I have just installed Logic Express on my mac and it seems that when i import an GarageBand file and hit the play button, nothing came out of my speakers. The same happens when i use the pencil tool to draw notes on software instruments like Grand Piano and hit the play button, nothing came out my macbook's internal speakers, even if i turn it to maximum volume. do i need an midi instument or equipment in order to listen to my tunes because all i have for my setup is just an macbook, nothing else.
Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure what you are doing wrong is not assigning an instrument to you MIDI tracks. I think what you are "drawing notes" to are the General MIDI tracks. These don't make any sound. Create a new software instrument track. . . not a MIDI track. Go to the I/O setting in the arrange channel strip and select one of Logic's fine instruments, samplers, or synths to go in there. Now, sounds should come out. You may need to reassign sounds from garage band in this same way.

  • MIDI Interface equipment

I went to Sweetwater and saw two M-Audio MIDI equipment. Both seems to be the sport model, although one was called UNO. They were both the same price. The UNO seemed to have the cables included (maybe already attached). The other made no mention of cables. I don't need anything fancy because I use Garageband for my own personal use. I have a Roland electric piano that I would like to interface with Garageband. Which one would anyone recommend? Thanks, Will

I may not know much about this stuff, being a guitarist, but for my clavinova electric piano, I bought a USB cable with two midi (five pin) plugs/ends on the other end, as the clavinova didn't have a USB. Worked as soon as I plugged it in. No software, nothing else needed. Hope this helps. This cord only cost $30 canadian so ask lots of questions before buying and you can always take it back.
Also just for your info, 'Native Instruments' company offer freebies as demos called 1)Kore player, 2)Compliation Vol 1.,and 3)Kore 2. The first gives amazing quality sounds and the 'player' - a software, the second gives another 100 sounds, and the third gives you (only in demo form, you can play with the stuff for 30 mins then stuff disappears, but you can record it) gives you about four hundred other sounds, the ability to split you keyboard and layer multiple sounds and you can tweak all the sounds included in all three, there being eight preset tweaks, so if you don't like a sound in preset A, try all the other seven. Some are great sounds. I'm now into keyboards like never before. The trick has worked on me though. Now I want to buy that, or logic express, or logic pro, so I can split my keyboard and keep all the settings and instruments. You should here my six year old play mission impossible with four double sounds on one keyboard. Like the real thing.
Hope the cord/lead thing helps, the other was for free. Makes the g'band sounds sound like toys, though they can be tweaked to be pretty good.

  • Audio and MIDI Driver Conflict

    Hi,
I am brand-new with Logic. (Just bought it yesterday!)
I was able to use it with a MOTU 828 and an M-Audio Ozone for Audio and MIDI, respectively. I've also just moved from Pro-Tools to Logic, so I also have a Digi 002 and I'd like to able to use the 002 if possible as well. So...
Now Logic shows this dialog, and does not let me go on to use the program:
“Logic Pro has detected a possible conflict between one or more third party MIDI or Audio drivers.
Be sure to install the latest drivers for all audio and MIDI equipment connected to your computer, and remove any older or unused drivers.”
I have tossed the older drivers (from my previous system, as I just updated to Tiger)
and I still get the dialog.
Should I start from scratch? If so, how??
    I need help! Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

You are about to enter a world where time and space
have no dimensions.A world called the Digi Zone.
This could be a little messy, so I will try and walk
you through it. First off let me get this straight, you
said you moved from Pro Tools to Logic? You know
once you leave the Matrix, you cant go back. OK,
so now your going to find out how deep the
    rabbit hole goes.
    First, you must go here......
    http://www.digidesign.com/download/coreaudio/tiger/
This will get you to the page where you can download
the STAND ALONE core audio driver for TIGER. This is
the driver that you must use once you decide you are not going
    to use Pro Tools exclusively.
Second, There is a FAQ there, read it. There are a couple
of things you will need to know. The major issues are
you will need to change the I/O buffer size the first time
you use Logic or else you will eventually have a crash.
Default is 512, change it to1024 for a little while then
you can change it back to whatever you want.
check the FAQ. Also, you wont here your system sounds
through the driver. They will still come through the internal
    speakers.
This should get you up an running.
One last thing, Dont upgrade Tiger, unless you want
trouble. If you want to upgrade Tiger (10.5), wait until
Digi offers a new stand alone driver. Other wise you
will have to Downgrade back to Tiger to
get Logic to work. I have had to deal with this first
hand so, take my word on this.

  • Help with recording midi instruments : two sources at the same time

    Hi -
I'm trying to learn Logic after using Performer for years, and though the audio is fine, I just can't get the midi to work doing something really simple.
I have a MOTU midi express XT, which is an 8 channel midi interface. Piano plugged into channel 1, drumkit plugged into channel 2. I want to play both and record both, which should be easy, but I am stuck at the first hurdle.
So, new project, add a midi track for the piano, and select XT1 and plays and records fine. Add a track for the drums, and try to put it onto XT2, and now the keyboard plays the drums when I press the keys. Likewise, the drum kit triggers the piano. I have tried unchecked auto demix by channel but that doesn't help.
This ought to be trivial, but even with the manual, I cannot figure out how to simply choose midi input and output per track.
If anyone has a tip I would be very grateful!
    thanks
    Steve

    goldensteve wrote:
I believe that I have followed your instructions, but I am seeing the same result: both midi sources trigger (and record) each other. Hmm.
It looks like the midi channels are not set properly or something like that...
What kind of midi tracks have you created - Software Instrument tracks - if yes set their midi channels to 1 and 2 ? If you have created Standard Instrument objects and want to use them with external sound device check the midi channels of these Standard Instrument objects again in the Environment of in the Arrange track Inspector - they must be set to ch.1 and ch.2.
If you use a Multi Instrument set it to ch.All in the Environment and create tracks for its sub midi channels 1 & 2 in the Arrange.
The Autodemix by midi channel Logic setting must be enabled as Bee Jay mentioned as well both tracks must be armed "R" !
Go to Click & Ports Environment layer and have a look at the "Input View" Monitor to check the incoming midi channels of the external instruments. Play a piano note(let's say C2) on the first instrument which is set to ch.1 - you must see some midi message like:
    "1 C2 56" in the Monitor - which means ch1. Note=C2 vel=56.
Trigger a drum note (A2 for example) on the second instrument (Drums Set) on ch.2, so it must be shown as "2 A2 78" which confirms that the midi channel i.s OK. If not, then you must check you hardware settings again etc.
PS. If these re-instructions do not solve your problem, please provide a download link of this Logic project song so we can check up it. Make a short description on which tracks you try to record or just name them "Piano" & "Drum Set" something like that.

  • Random volume change on midi track during

Hey guys! For some reason a random midi track will just all of a sudden increase to max on volume while play back and I haven't got any automation on it at all. I have tried unplugging the midi and in again but still won't solve the problem. Anyone know how to fix this??
I have been searching for this answer and still haven't found anything.
Is this a bug in logic pro? This used to happen with my Logic 8 and I just recently upgraded to Pro thinking this won't happen but it's doing my head in!!!
    Please please help!!

OK, you say all sorts of things, but frankly none of it is very clear or concise. What is needed here is evidence. So first select any track on which this happens, select the regions of that track, open the Event list (key: E) and make a screenshot of that event list. This to exclude that you already have recorded these volume control messages. If you have and you don't want them, click on the Notes button top of the event list, this hides all notes, making it easier to select all volume events and delete those.
Second, when it starts to happen, hit cmd-8, an Environment window opens. In this window, go to the dropdown top left and choose Click & Ports. In that layer/window you'll see a MIDI monitor object. Are there any events shown in it? Click in it to clear it, and see if cc 7 (volume) control messages start coming in. They move you faders.
You most likely have a MIDI controller with a wobbly slider or panpot or other hardware thingy that is sending out those Volume control messages aka CC 7.
"unplugging and in again" I take it means you have unplugged it and immediately replugged it, as a sort of "reset"? That will not help in this case, it would help if you'd unplugged it and observed what (didn't) happen when you did. I bet the problem clears up then, again pointing to the hardware as the culprit.
You can do that still: unplug your MIDI equipment, and see if it still happens. My bet: it won't.
If the hardware is to blame, the best solution is to get better hardware, or get it fixed, or filter out the volume messages in the environment, or in the prefs.

  • Sending Midi Program information from Mainstage

I'm trying to use mainstage to control a variety of midi gear. I want Mainstage to be the master for all the other pieces of equipment. Is this possible? ie I want to select a patch on mainstage and it send out a midi program change to a load of midi equipment and it all change to the same midi program number.
I seem to be only able yo get it to respond to program change data but not create it. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Yes, I'm doing this --- MainStage 2 has explicit support for external MIDI devices....just create external MIDI channel strips and in the attributes for the strip you can send bank and program changes.

  • Garage band wont work, need to install midi or audio drivers?

tried backing up my comp to install OSX leopard but failed. now garage band wont work! I keep getting this message...also want to know if its possible to upgrade to osx leopard with a 4th gen macbook that runs osx 10.4.11
*garageband has detected a possible conflict between one or more third party midi or audio drivers.*
Be sure to install the latest drivers for all audio and MIDI equipment connected to your computer. For instructions on removing older drivers, consult the manufacturers' documentation.

Im having the same problem, I upgraded my IMAC and was using tiger and I upgraded it to MAC 10.5.7, now GarageBand wont work saying my midi and audio drivers arent correct. My Reason 4.0 wont start either saying the same thing failed to open the midi library. My Protools works fine but I dont know how to update the audio and midi drivers that it matches the software I uploaded. I also went to the audio midi set up and it read, Audio MIDI Setup was unable to launch the MIDI Server. This means that you will be unable to view or edit your MIDI configurations.
Improperly written MIDI drivers can prevent the MIDI Server from launching successfully. If you have recently installed a new MIDI driver, try uninstalling it and then relaunching Audio MIDI Setup. If Audio MIDI Setup works correctly after that, then please contact the driver's manufacturer for further support.

  • Conflict between one or more third party MIDI or audio drivers

I have a Logic Pro 8 session with 17 audio files, each one of which have 2 to 4 plugins.
Every time I try to bounce the session to an .aiff or .mp3 this dialog box appears:
Logic Pro has detected a possible conflict between one or more third party MIDI or audio drivers.
Be sure to install the latest drivers for all audio and MIDI equipment connected to your computer, and remove any older or unused drivers.
I haven't installed any extra drivers/midi controllers/software. I just work entirely with Logic and an M-Audio external card (which is unplugged and audio preferences set to Built-In Input). And anyway, this issue arose after having recorded all the audios, after doing the editing, so no other possible installation move was done.
Please, help me find a solution.
    Thanks.

I have looked in Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers and there is just one file called EmagicUSBMIDIDriver.plugin - can this be causing the problem?
    Nothing on User/YourName/Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers.
I have found 3 AVID folders on Applications:
    - Avid MetaSync Manager
    - Avid MetaSync Publisher
    - Avid_Uninstallers
    Shall I remove these?
There is also an empty folder called Digidesign on User/Library/Audio/Plugins
I have tried it with the M-Audio card connected and selected in Logic, and it doesn't work.

  • Is there still a new MIDI standard coming out soon (MIDI 2.0)?

Hello, I was just wondering what the word on the supposed second coming of MIDI was. I seem to hear about it for a bit, and than hear nothing for a good while. I heard that it will be finalized within a year of MIDI's twenty year anniversary, which is coming up this year i think? Anyway, what am I missing here? Any gossip?
I am pondering this more as I am thinking about replacing some MIDI equipment. Should I wait to go all-out on the coolest stuff since a new MIDI standard would maybe (likely?) require all new gear to take advantage?
Also, even if "MIDI 2" is finalized very soon, about how long before we can expect good commercial products taking advantage of it?
And golly, "MIDI 2" aught to turn Logic on it's head requiring some heavy rewriting to keep up with the jones', huh?
    Thanks for your participation!

  • MIDI error message on startup

Garageband has detected a possible conflict between one of more third party MIDI or audio drivers. Be sure to install the latest drivers for all audio and MIDI equipment connected to your computer, and remove any older or unused drivers.
That error shows four times during start up; then, once the main window appears I get another error:

I have no third party MIDI or audio drivers - at least none that I can find in either the root or user Library/Application Support or Library/Audio directories, which only seem to contain the default plug ins.

I also had the problem you were having. Here's what I think was happening and what I did to solve the problem:
    - my AppleLoops library is on my iPod 5g - to save HD space
    - I decided to connect my iPod to my MBP thru a hub
    - I started getting the error message you got
    - I connected my iPod via one of the USB ports on my MBP and....shazam!!! GarageBand opened without a problem. I think that by "hiding" my iPod - which had all the loops GarageBand needs - behind a hub, GarageBand could not access the Loops library and probably something else that is somehow connected to the MIDI server.
Maybe Garageband was not able to find your Loops library.
Hope this is of some help.
    Cheers

  • Connecting a MIDI keyboard

I have found a nice cheap MIDI keyboard, which I must use with GarageBand. I have an iMic, with which I can plug in my guitar. But this keyboard only has a MIDI output port. Is there a MIDI to USB cable, or MIDI to 3.5mm (iMic) cable that I can use. If so, who makes it, where is it.

I think using the Functions/Transform/Demix command to separate the track into individual MIDI channels would be the easiest option, then he could used the merge command to put them back together.

    p.s.
I originally was going to post the solution below, until
    I reread the question.
I think he wants to change specific notes (ie: D#) across multiple MIDI channels.
He must have the AU MIDI channel set to "All" and changed MIDI transmission channels on his controller so he ends up with a multi channel track.
If that's it, the easiest way is to use the Matrix editor piano keyboard to select the note (it selects all channels) and then double click on a selected note to open the event editor which will have the all of the correct notes selected.

  • MIDI Sync

    Hi Everyone,
Does any version of Garageband support MIDI timecode synchronization, where Garageband is the so-called "slave"? I have a digital audio workstation that sends a timecode, and I would like Garageband to start/stop in sync with the workstation. Before I purchase the necessary MIDI equipment, I'd like to know if I can sync everything together. I would really appreciate any advice.
    Thank you,
    Brian

GarageBand doesn't output MIDI signals to hardware, unless you use the MidiO plugin, but I don't know if that outputs MIDI time code. Internally, the plug-ins seem to be able to use the host tempo.
However, GarageBand is most likely not going to listen to external tempo information, as it has a fixed tempo for each song. It might listen to the start/stop commands, but I cannot find any information...
You might try this program to experiment with the latter option: http://www.macmusic.org/software/view.php/lang/en/id/392/

  • Strange MIDI error message. Please Help

I keep getting a strange message when I load logic: “Logic Pro has detected a possible conflict between one or more third party MIDI or audio drivers. Be sure to install the latest drivers for all audio and MIDI equipment connected to your computer, and remove any older or unused drivers”. After a few attempts to get the message to go away, Logic finally loaded. Does anyone have any idea what this is? I’ve searched the forums and can’t seem to find any info. Thanks.

Did you recently upgrade to Logic Pro 7.2?
If so, then the reason for the error message is that the latest MIDI and audio drivers of your plug-ins need to be updated before you upgrade Logic.
Try this... Under the file menu at the top left corner, go to Logic Pro, then down to preferences, and then Start Logic AU manager. You will then get a dialogue box that asks if it is OK to quit the current program and start the AU manager. Click the start AU manager. A screen then pops up showing all of the plug-ins of your system. Logic scans them to validate them. Those in which there is a problem (crashing, etc), indicates likely that the drivers for those AU units need to be updated.
Once all of them pass validation, then the error message should go away.
This information was gleaned from one of the tutorials that I watched on VTC.com, the Logic Pro section, and on Martin Sitter' tutorials on MacProvideo.com. I highly recommend the tutorials... they are excellent.
    Hope the above helps.
