Is  an NEC DVD Burner compatible?

I just got a B&W G3 tower with a 500mhz G4 processor upgrade, which I want to use iMovie on. OSX is loaded and running well on 320mb RAM. Can I use an internal NEC DVD-RW drive in the G3? It came from a PC, the model is NEC ND 1300-A. I can't find an answer from NEC anywhere. Thanx and HAPPY NEW YEAR to all. G-47

Patch Burn (http://www.patchburn.de/) has worked fine for me in terms of giving full burning capabilities for non-supported drives. It's easy to install, and should it give you issues, it is easy to uninstall the driver changes that it makes. Though it should work fine with third party burners, give PatchBurn a shot and see if you like it.

  • Can anyone recommend a  New DVD burner compatible with Retrospect?

I'm hoping some more experienced users can help me find a new DVD burner for my trusty old G4 (Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4 - mirror doors).
My original Superdrive still functions, but has become a little erratic at times (and is a tad slow - like me), so I'm considering a new external burner (Firewire preferred). I've located a new LaCie drive (22x, DVD-DL, lightscribe, etc etc) model reference 301484U, but I cannot determine if it is Retrospect compatible.
As a Graphic Designer, I've built up over the years a very large Retrospect archive of all my work & clients files (several hundred CDs & DVDs), to which I must retain access. I checked the EMC (Dantz) web-site, but the burner is not listed, so I don't know if it is or is not compatible, just not tested.
I decided to go with an external/firewire drive in the hope that when I do buy a new Mac Pro I can switch it over to the new machine.
I suppose as an alternative, if I could find an external version of whatever model Superdrive is included in the current Mac Pros, that would more than likely work with Retrospect.
I would appreciate any suggestions/comments or recommendations

In the past year I have bought a Pioneer for my old G4 and a LG for my MacPro at Best Buy when they have been on sale. No problems, easy installs. If you need more detailed/user experiences check out the drive database at:

  • Recommendations for External DVD Burner compatible with 10.5 Leopard?

We still have an older MacBook that we bought in 2007, it works great except for the CD/DVD drive. I need to be able to burn DVD's, could anyone recommend an External DVD Burner that would be compatible with 10.5 Leopard? Or at least give me an idea of what I need to look for to know if it should work before I buy it? Thank you!

    Hello,
Biggest thing you want to avoid is Bus powered ones, here's one good suggestion...

  • Burning Blank CD-Rs With A NEC DVD burner

I have a NEC DVD-RW NC3540a burner. I'm Using Mac OSX 10.3.9. Now when i go to burn a playlist in iTunes i click on the upper right hand corner, insert a blank CD-R and then click burn. iTunes the starts "Checking Media" for like 30seconds or so and then does nothing. And if i just insert the disk without any programs running Finder won't mount it. What could be the Problem??

With 10.3.9 you may need patchburn ( http://www.patchburn.de ) if this is a new user installed drive. What does "Disc Burning" say in System Profiler?

  • Apple dvd burner compatible with pcs

I have borrowed an Apple USB SuperDrive but can't get it to work with my Lenovo PC. Is the SuperDrive really not compatible with a PC?

    Correct.  See http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD564
It is not even compatible with all Apple computers.

  • How can I write dual DVDs with my UJ 820S DVD burner?

hello i own a satellite notebook, and my problem is that it cannot write at dual dvds, i believe that i have to upgrade the firmware but i cant find anything, recently i had the same problem with my desktop pc and solve it when i upgrade the firmware from its own nec dvd burner, anybody knows where i can find a firmware update, or something else to solve my problem?

    Hi Chris
The CD and DVD burning and reading with different drives is a never ending story.
I use an external burner and believe me; I have tested more than 10 different medias from different manufactures.
I could burn some medias but not read and read but not burn :(
I think you should also test different DVDs.
In my user manual I have found a list with compatible CD and DVD. Possibly you will also find the same supported media list in you preinstalled user manual.

  • Buying Mac Compatible External DVD Burner

I need to buy a dual-layer DVD burner, but many of the ones I've looked at only specify that they're compatible with Windows. Are these burners genuinely not Mac compatible? The manufactures of the drives I've been looking at are from mainstream companies like Pioneer, NEC, Sony, etc., not some weird generic brand. Thanks

    Hi Ratboy,
Most DVD burners are the same and will work with a Mac even if the manufacturer does not provide drivers or software for them. Manufacturer's only need to provide drivers for custom features and functions that are unique to their machine. The OS and Apple software reads/writes dual layer DVD's.

True to the extent that out of the box they indeed will not work with Macs other than Airs and Retinas.  However a minor modification WILL make them compatible with other Macs.  Here are the instructions:

Thus it is a valid choice for consideration.

What external dvd burner is compatible with my 2007 mac mini running OS X 10.5.8?

I have an LG GE24LU20 and works great with either my iMac or Mac Mini.

Heck' I can even open and close the tray from my menu bar icon,
plus it is way faster and less finicky than the superdrives.

  • NERO burned DVDs not compatible with iMacs?

Can anyone confirm that DVDs burned with NERO
(in this case NTSC, Region 0/NO region code)
are not compatible with iMacs' DVD player?
When I insert these DVDs they get mounted, but DVD player can't play them.
Is there a way to fix this?
Or does the maker of the DVDs have to use special settings in NERO
    to make them compatible?
    Thanks!

    Hi coxorange;
Since Nero is not an Apple product, I suggest you ask the vendor who wrote it.

  • Compatible third-party DVD burner

Does anyone know if Apple has a document that list third-party DVD burners compatible with Mac?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Darrell

    Wakko Warner,
Thanks, just happened to have run across that web site while determining what my next course of action was going to be. I looked at the Panasonic Internal 16X DVD Dual Layer model and started reading the specs on it. One statement had me wondering. "*Some older systems will not be able to burn discs at full speed due to a slower system bus or IDE bus." What regulates the system bus and IDE Bus speeds? Would it run on a G3 B/W Power Mac with an upgraded G4 Sonnet Processor?

what are the mac-compatible internal/external dvd burner for 12"Pbook

    ibodnano:
You will find internal optical drivers from OWC here. You will find external DVD burners from OWC here.
For the external drives, almost any Firewire burner will be supported by your PowerBook. Here are a few. You can further refine the filters.
    Good luck.
