Is another 2GB of RAM worth it?

So it's my turn to ask you whether I should upgrade my RAM from 1 to 3GB (maximum supported memory on T60). I'm using Windows XP and Linux and am just curious whether it would be advisable to upgrade to the 3GB max or instead install another 1GB module.
My use is Photoshop, Acrobat. Surfing with multiple tabs open, Linux with some applications. It's more the boost I'm after. So any advice is welcome.
Cheers
Chris

adding more memory can't hurt.   PC2-5300 SODIMMs are getting less and less expensive so you might as well go for a 2GB module right away.
32-bit photoshop can use up to about 1.8GB of system memory.   the other 1GB will be used by windows so having 3GB total will give you an "ideal" setup for a 32-bit photoshop environment.

  • 2006 model iMac, is it worth putting in 3 GB over 2GB of RAM?

I currently have 2GB of RAM installed as 2x1GB chips. Is it worth bumping the memory up to 3GB (Apple said I can put in 2x2B chips but it will only see 3GB)? Will I notice any difference or is the 2GB pretty much the sweet spot? Thanks.

    Hi nflp
What does your Activity Monitor tell you after an hour of normal use?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342?viewlocale=en_US
If your running a lot of big app's at the same time and your running low with 2 GB them yes 3 GB would be better.
Except that ram is cheap and 4 GB would be even better, because your system would access 3.3 GB of ram and maintain the matched ram performance.

  • IMac 5,2 getting it over 2GB of Ram I think I'm close

Ok, so this is been quite a project I've been completely determined to get my iMac 5,2 over 2GB of Ram so far what I've done is
-Disable SMBios (which has done ALOT of good things the most noticable is the improvement in the Intel GMA 950 it allows alot of updated intel kexts to run and I can tell it's removed the boot-arg "maxmememory=2017" in Lion when you load the system profile when you get to the about this mac in the system profiler it says 2?? and when you click on memory it says that there's no user installable memory which isn't the case but the initial software limiter is removed the only thing I can really think thats stopping it is the Model Indentifer "5, 2" my guess is one of the various efi frameworks is still blocking it with the indentifier I've tried flashing the rom a couple of different ways but have been unsuccessful initial I tried to the downgrade it to a 4, 1 then I was going to take it to a 5, 1 but thats cleary not going to work so now i'm thinking of using a Mac Mini indentifer I think it's the 2, 1 has nearly an intetical motherboard plus the intel GMA 950 but my recent attempts have not been successful I dunno it's a little frustating I was so sure it was gonna boot when I block the SMBIos but it did I thought that was gonna for sure do it so any ideas? I'm not worried about bricking this system the EFI is superisly resilient boot I can reflash it if some does go wrong so if you got any crazy ideas I'll try it if seems resonable.

From the little I understand, what you are trying to do is to fool the hardware and from previous posts here, it's been tried before. Result: it won't work. Even if you were able to put in another graphics card (not possible) and a logic board and a processor, the result would be the same: it will not work.
Your model can go to 2 GB RAM. If you do that, you can run Lion, but  it won't run well with it (if that is your ultimate aim), as both Lion and ML are memory hogs and 2 GB just won't cut it.
Also, read the specs on this page including the limitations of Core Duo and Core 2 Duo (educational model):

  • Slow performance even with 2GB of RAM

I am a long time Windows user and last week I finally made the switch. I had been contemplating making the switch over to a Mac ever since the Macbook Pros came out but they were a little out of my price range. Needless to say when the Macbooks came out I was sold. I bought a white 2.0 GHz Macbook. I noticed that it was a little sluggish when I ran several programs (i.e. Safari, iTunes, Mail, etc). According to several posts I have read this is to be expected with only 512MB of RAM. However, I recently upgraded to 2GB of RAM (2x1GB Patriot SO-DIMM DDR2 PC-5300). I have read several posts that say that with 2GB of RAM the system "just flies" or "cuts through programs like butter". I didnt really notice the speed boost that I was expecting. I was expecting programs to open right when I click on the icon but it still lags a little. Is there something else I need to do after I install the RAM? Is seems as though with a 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo and 2GB of RAM I should see a substantial boost in speed. I think my 2GB of RAM is fine. The system profiler registers the new RAM at 667 MHz and everything seems to be ok. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm getting the same thing, and I don't think it's the RAM, since I've already tried 2 different brands, one was a knockoff Samsung from eBay and another is authentic Samsung, from eBay, so still could be knockoff.
However, I mostly run Windows on my MacBook and notice no slowdowns, but when I boot into OSX, it is almost unusable, even the dashboard stutters into view. I checked out the System Analyzer and found no programs hogging up resources, and iStat nano reports 1.5GB RAM free!
So I don't get it, Apple's hardware test shows no problems, one of these nights I'm going to run Memtest for OSX to see if anything shows...
If I put my original Hynix 512MB memory back in, the sluggishness is gone, but it still runs like a machine with a low amount of memory.
Someone suggested creating a new account, so I am going to try that tonight. I sort of want to reload OSX, but would hate to go through all of that work if it's not gonna help.
    Any help would be appreciated!

  • Looking for 2GB of ram to upgrade my hp pav 20-b010z all in one

I am trying to find just 2GB of ram so I can upgrade my HP Pav 20-b010z all in one computer. My product # C1A32AV#ABA. It only came with 2 GB.
I have DDR3-1066MHz SODIMM Memory and Windows 8 64-bit. I only have one stick in the computer. I was told that I need to use PC3-12800. I'm pretty new to all of this.
Could someone please tell me what kind of ram I need to use that would be compatible with my computer. What brand too, please. If there is one by HP I would gladly like to use that.
Thank you for any help you can provide

    Hi:
Please take a look at the product specs for your PC at the link below.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03569440&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...
The PC3-12800 memory downclocks to 1066 MHz (PC3-8500).
You can install up to 16 GB of memory in your PC.
Why do things half measure?   4 GB is the minimum memory I would run a 64 bit OS on, and have it work acceptably.
I would just buy 2 x 8 GB of PC3-12800 memory and have all the memory you'll ever need, and get it now while it is cheap.
Here is a link to a place where you can get good PC3-12800 memory cheap.
I defaulted the search to PC3-12800. You can refine the search by clicking on the memory size, etc on the left side of the page.
Read the reviews and get what makes the most sense to you.

  • Mac mini Late 2012 - 8 gb of ram worth it?

    Hello :)
Are 8 gigabytes of ram worth it for my my Mac mini?
I use it for Xcode and sometimes my Mac takes a bit too long for easy tasks.
    Or should I take 16 gb ?
    Thanks for answers
    Thomas

The Activity Monitor application can help you determine whether more memory would improve performance. If you often have memory pressure in the yellow or red zone, or if you often have more than a few MB of swap used, then you should consider adding memory.

  • More than 2GB of RAM?

I have a 20"2Ghz iMac ALS with 2GB of RAM. Can I upgrade to 4GB?

  • Installing extra 2gb of ram?

probably a stupid question but what cofiguration do i add an extra 2gb of ram (2 x 1gb = 4 x 1gb in total) to my Mac Pro?
I originally got an extra 4gb but the seller gave me 667mhz eram so he just swapped it today for 2gb instead.

Yes, that is the way Apple ships it, and is different from older Mac Pros.
You have a choice: move the one from B to A2, or put the two new DIMMs in slot 2 on each.
Dimm slot one and two have to be identical matched, same size.

  • WebLogic Workshop 10.3.  takes up 1.2GB of RAM

    Hi,
Does anybody know if there is any way to reduce the RAM usage by WebLogic Workshop 10.3. It takes up 1.2GB of RAM on my machine (no collaboration and other custom project).
Is there a way to reduce the memory usage by switching off something in Workshop?
    Regards,
    JT

    The issue has been resolved.
We should actually use setupNetPointRealm_wl92.sh instead of setupNetPointRealm.sh even for Weblogic 10.3 server.
Then, the weblogic server started properly.

  • Is my MacBook (mid 2010) with an Intel Core 2 Duo (2.4 GHZ) with 2GB of Ram going to run smoothly when I purchase OS X Lion?

I dont know if a 2.4 GHZ Core 2 duo with 2GB of RAM and a mid 2010 model of my Macbook will run smoothly with Mac OS X Lion. Can anybody help make my decision either i should upgrade from snow leopard to lion?

My advice... DO NOT BUY.... otherwise you will be like me... frustrated and horrified.... I am suffering .... and im the last person to be on such discussion forum... but now I am here... you may be able to guage my furstration. Snow Leapord is zillion times better than Lion... they should call it pu**y instead of lion.

  • Is 2gb of RAM enough for update to OS X Lion

I have a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro with 2GB of RAM. I'm wondering if 2GB is enough to run Lion for my uses. I use microsoft office, iwork, and ilife regulary for school work and other purposes but nothing to extensive. Is 2GB enough?
    Thanks

It runs on my 2010 macbook air w/ 2 g of memory without any obvious slow down compared to Snow Leopard. That isn't the fastest machine in the world and I use it for limited purposes due to its extreme portability. I haven't noticed any performance degradation but I haven't done any benchmark tests - so this is just a subjective impression. On my macbook pro with 10 gig of memory there are no slowdown issues and a subjective impression without benchmarks is that it is a tad speedier.

  • Is 2gb of ram enough for office 2011

I just received a MacBook air with 2gb of ram. Is this enough to run Microsoft 2011? I'm wondering if I should upgrade to 4gb

Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac works great. I have it running on my OSX partition with no problems. I normally run several large PDF's, documents and presentations at the same time. I haven't tried crunching my large spreadsheets yet. I am sure I will try that in the next couple weeks.
One other thing, Office 2011 installs the Microsoft Document connection which will let you save your docs directly to the skydrive, which is very nice. It's a good way to save the space on the laptop and store the docs so you can access anywhere, anytime on any device.

  • Hi, My Mac Mini 2006 early core Duo hangs when i try to connect wirlessly to ZyXEL VMG B Series i am using fresh install Mac OS 10.6.3 2Gb of RAM

Hi, My Mac Mini 2006 early core Duo
hangs when i try to connect wirlessly to
    ZyXEL VMG B Series.
I am using fresh install Mac OS 10.6.3 with
    2Gb of RAM.
The same issue when i try to hooked up with LAN cable.
Any tips and adviced will be very very welcome, thanks in advanced to everyone!

    Hey there cutyscar,
It sounds like you are unable to connect to your router either by Wi-Fi, or ethernet. I would recommend trying the troubleshooting outlined in this article named:
Mac OS X: Troubleshooting a cable modem, DSL, or LAN Internet connection
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1317
Start with this step, and work your way down as needed:
Check all cables and power supplies
Make sure all the cables related to the modem are plugged in and firmly inserted. This includes the modem's power cord, the cable from the modem to the computer, and the cable from the modem to the outlet. To be sure a connector is properly inserted, disconnect and reconnect it. Check to see if the cables have been cut, chewed, or otherwise damaged.
If you have any hubs or routers, check their cables and power supplies. If you have more than one power supply available for a type of hub or router, try swapping the power supplies. A defective power supply may affect network traffic.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • 2GB of RAM missing after 10.6.5 update

I updated my Mac Pro (8x2.8GHz) to 10.6.5 today, and I'm now missing 2GB of RAM. Here's a line from Console.app this morning when I installed some software (not responsible for this):
    11/11/2010 00:04:21 Installer(5171) Hardware: MacPro3,1 @ 2.80 GHz (x 8), 10240 MB RAM
    And here's a line after I updated:
    11/11/2010 11:50:05 Installer(3195) Hardware: MacPro3,1 @ 2.80 GHz (x 8), 8192 MB RAM
Where has my 2GB of RAM gone?
Looking in the System Profiler, the correct 6 DIMMs are there, but two of them that should be 2GB are now showing as 1GB. I had 4x2GB (from OWC) and 2x1GB (Apple-supplied), and now I have 2x2GB and 4x1GB.
    Much woe. Please help...! Thanks!!!

    Marginal RAM.
Replace, or try reseating; also SMC Reset.
Almost every OS update has 'broken' or revealed marginal hardware (RAM, video card, etc).
Rather common as in, this does get reported with RAM not showing up in Mac Pro, from time to time over years affecting users.
FBDIMMs such as yours run hot, need cooling, age? prematurely. Keeping them as cool as possible, even below recommended standards, helps, say below 74*C and hopefully in 60's.
