Is anybody using RDX Removable Disk Backup System

I´m sorry, this a new post about an old discussion but I would like to start a fresh dialogue for today; 2011.
Is anybody using RDX Removable Disk Backup System (with or without T.Machine).
An affordable alternative to LTO tape? Proved compatibility with Mac OS?
Is it possible to insert a RDX drive as a second optic unit inside a Mac Pro?
Any happy RDX+mac user, so far?
Thanks.

I'm not using RDX on a Mac, but I do have one client I'm using RDX for a Windows server.  While RDX is somewhat cost effective over LTO/Ultrium, IMHO it probably wouldnt' be the best for Time Machine.  Time Machine expects the previous backup to be online and if you switch cartridges, TM would have to create a new backup from scratch.  Then if you switch back the cartridges, your TM bundles are out of sync.  I'm not saying it's not possible, but that this is not the "normal" way TM works.  So you need to understand what you need to do if you were planning to switch cartridges.  (If you weren't planning to switch cartridges, then a "normal" external or internal hard drive is more cost effective than RDX.)
RDX cartridges are basically 2.5" SATA hard drives.  The RDX "drive" is, for the most part, just a SATA to USB converter.  (Or SATA to eSATA or whatever interface you get.)  On the PC the advantage is that you don't have to "safely remove hardware" and you don't lose the drive letter.  On the Mac, a "normal" external hard drive is almost as convinient as RDX, since there's no drive letter to worry about.  The RDX's advantage on the Mac would be not having to plug/unplug a USB cable on the external units.  I suppose you could get an internal eSATA RDX to put into a Mac.  I don't know of anyone doing that.
I did use my client's USB RDX drive on his Macbook, just to see what we could do with it.  While it worked, we didn't do extensive testing so I can't comment on long term satisfaction with OSX.  But so far it's been reliable with Windows for almost two years.  (Windows Server 2008 with Backup Exec 2010.)  However since RDX is basically just a hard drive, I've gotten the client to realize that in a year or two, we'll probably have to start replacing cartridges, assuming his data size doesn't grow beyond the RDX capacity.  This is based on the assumption that the RDX cartridges would have similar longevity to laptop hard drives, which have 3-5 year warranties.  We probably will get more lifespan than that, but better to have the client plan in the budget now, rather than have backups fail.

  • RDX removable disk cartridges usable for backup?

    Hello:
    Has anyone had any experience using RDX removable disk cartridges for Time Machine or EMC retrospect? It's a new storage platform to me. My VXA-2 tape drive went and I was looking at this removable disk system. It seems like an alternative to tapes.
    Anyone with any thoughts on using this with Retrospect or Time Machine.
    Thanks,
    Rick

    I'm not familiar with them, but from what I see on the web site, yes, it might be a good alternative to tape (didn't know anybody still used tape!)
    It doesn't look like this would be compatible with Time Machine, though, since it's a network device. If it can't be attached directly to a Mac via FireWire or USB (or a Time Capsule via USB), it's probably not going to work with TIme Machine: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
    Even if you could get TM to back up to it, the removable feature is at cross-purposes to Time Machine: one of Time Machine's big advantages is the quick hourly backups, always easily available for recovering a previous version of something changed or deleted in error.
    While you could back up and take the disk(s) offsite, it would likely be much cheaper to get a pair of portable external HDs: use one for a week or so, then take it off-site and swap with the other; or do Time Machine backups to a desktop external, and periodic bootable "clones" or other image-type backups to a portable you can take offsite.

  • Removing disk backups after implementing Veritas tape backups

    I was using RMAN with a catalog to backup to disk. Now we implemented RMAN backups using Veritas tape backup using the same catalog and I want to remove the old disk backups.
    When I "crosscheck backup" and "crosscheck archivelog all" then "delete obsolete" it errored with the following:
    ==================================================================
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-03002: failure of delete command at 08/29/2005 13:53:39
    RMAN-06091: no channel allocated for maintenance (of an appropriate type)
    ================================================================
    I assume it is seeing one of the tape backups and wants to detete it.
    How can I clearout these unnecessary disk backup sets without causing any problems?
    Thank You,
    .....Kevin

    I found the solution:
    RMAN> crosscheck backup;
    RMAN> crosscheck archivelog all;
    RMAN> delete obsolete device type disk;
    -- Assuming redundency was 1 only one set is left in the disk directory...
    RMAN> list backup;
    -- Find the backup set key which lists the DISK backups.
    -- List all the BSKeys
    RMAN> delete backupset key1, key2, ..., keyn;
    -- The files are gone...

  • Using The Removable Disk Opt

    Hey! I have a Creative zen Gb and I've turned 52Mb into a removable disk for storage and now I can't change it back to be 0Mb. I've deleted all the files in the removable disk and erased the free space but still it won't give me the option of reducing the size of the removable disk...
    Any ideas gratefully received.

  • Does anybody use ChaRM with their BW system?

    We are looking to implement Charm for our BW system and I am looking for somebody that has experience with this. For example if you extract a new field from your ECC system and transport it via Charm, does the system recognize that this transport needs to finish generating the data in BW before it moves the next transport in line? Or do you have to manually import these transports into BW?

    Horst,
    We already have Charm for ECC, CRM, SCM, Portal and the setup is not really a problem. The issue I have around BW is really a different one. Today, without Charm, we have the issue that the transports are not going in in the sequence that they are released (the BW manager gives us the sequence he wants them to be moved) and that in between transports we have to wait until the generation of data in BW is done, before the next transport can move. This takes a lot of time and as this needs to be done in off hours it keeps a person busy on the weekend, which ideally I want to avoid going forward as we are not staffed for that.
    So my question is if we are doing something wrong in general around the transports we do for BW (so that we have to wait and change transport sequences and do stuff manually) and if Charm is only going to make it worse....
    Looking for tips and tricks on how we can get this to go automated... . How can we get this to improve?
    Can you give me a few details on how your transports are going through for BW and if you encounter any of the above problems or how you might have resolved them?
    Thanks for your reply and thoughts on this

  • Restoring Sol10 using whole disk backup package (Acronis)

    Anyone ever tried backing up the disk that Sol 10 is installed on
    using a whole disk backup package?
    I've tried doing it using Acronis backup which allows you to boot from
    CD, and backup to USB hard drive. Anyway, it seemed to work when I
    restored it.
    Only problem is when the machine now boots it seems to run some sort
    of Acronis pre-boot and then GRUB appears on the screen but then it
    hangs.
    Any ideas at all? I'm just wondering if just the boot sector/bit needs
    to be fixed?

    Sounds like either the device links are incorrect, or that it got installed onto a different partition after the recover.
    If you haven't already, you could try and boot to failsafe (or from CD/network), mount the root-disk under /a and run devfsadm -R /a .
    Never tried acronis, so i don't know exactly how it functions.

  • How to restore a backup copy of 'My Music", from an external backup system

    Is there a document somewhere on the procedure to recover iTunes when you used a 3rd party backup system?
    Issue: I am having difficulty restoring my iTunes library from a third party backup system that mirrors all the files on my computer onto a remote disk drive. First I restored the files onto a new computer, then I loaded iTunes
    for windows, and then used authorize option. iTunes does not show any of my files, and appears to have erased the files I restored. I am lost what to do next, I can restore the files again if need be, just want to read some instructions instead of guessing.
    Background: My desktop computer gave me error messages when I rebooted my computer just after upgrading from iTunes 7.0.18 to iTunes 7.0.2. I got an error message that the operating systems SMS hive file is corrupt (a security file). After some investigation a technical person in my company tol me that the file is gone, on both my mirrored disk drives. Would appear that this is a serious iTunes bug or a serious hardware problem. Not knowing which, and confident I have a good backup, I have placed that computer on the side, and took a spare PC and started configuring it to be my new home computer.
    I loaded all the Windows patches and installed, recovered all the files under "My Documents", loaded iTunes, Authorized the computer, and don't see my files. When I go back to "My Music" subdirectory I see very few files, when I am in iTunes I don't see my music.
    The backup and restore was for all the files in "My Documents" kept on a remote server in my home, a Seagate Technology product called Mirra.
    Questions:
    1. How should I have restored those files? Apparently the method I choose does not work. All Apple FAQ information is based on me using the Apple Backup & Restore method, which I don't use, instead favoring using a single product to backup all my data.
    2. Are there other reports of microsoft Windows Hive or SMS files being damaged in the iTunes upgrade process? Any thoughts as to this being related to the iTunes upgrade process or digital rights management?

    First -- by default iTunes stores its Library in "My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl", and its Music in "My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\".
    Make sure you have a "iTunes Library.itl" after the restore -- if not, and your backup software supports it, try an older version of the file. If your backup software only keeps the last version of the file -- well, then you are SOL, and you will have to re-add the files to the Library. You will also have to rebuild your playlists, ratings, etc.
    Since you have "very few files" in the iTunes Music directory -- either you weren't storing your music there, or your backup didn't work. Are you sure you weren't using a non-default location for your music files?
    If you had a hardware problem then it is likely that your backup stopped working properly at some point. This is why you need a rotating backup scheme and periodic archiving of files to non-writeable media (If you have the time/money)

  • Zen Vision M 60GB removable disk on Vi

    Hi,
    I want to use the removable disk function on my zen vision m 60gb at capacity 32GB. I can't do this on the player; it wants me to use the "Creative Removable Disk Manager" to set the capacity, but what looks like the setup for this program on the install disk won't run on vista, and I can't see any help for this on the site. Can anyone advise a way to let me use the 32GB removable disk function?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the response,
    The player has 8 options for capacity of removable disk, 52MB, GB, .5GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 6GB and 32GB. Changing it through the player itself, like you say, works for choices up to 8GB, but trying it on 6GB and 32GB the player gives the message "Unable to resize. Use the Creative Removable disk manager to resize." I've tried cleaning up and rebooting, I've tried formatting the removable disk section but no joy. I had the impression that this issue was common to all these players, because the size was too big to handle itself.

  • Removable disk on zen mi

    hi,
    Is it possible to have more than the 2 gigs available to use has ?(if not,stupid question:can i (temporarelly) rename a big .zip file to .mp3 extension and then transfer it to zen micro so that i can use it has an alternati've "removable disk"?note that in this way removable disk mode would be off)

    Incidentally, I have a question: Is there any reason to keep using that "removable disk" feature once you have upgraded to the PlaysForSure firmware? I mean, with that firmware, you can simply drag and drop files to the player even if it's not in "removable disk" mode -- so why would one need to use this mode anymore?

  • Help with removable disk in Zen Mic

    My Zen works well, but when I tried to use the removable disk feature, it was not picked up by the computer. Any help appreciated!

    It was in removable disk mode when I plugged it in, and it detects it saying "found new hardware" and then it prompts me "welcome to the found new hardware wizard". It is not under my computer as any dri've, but when I plug it back in in regular mode, it is detected. Thanks for your help.

  • Backup Systems and CUCM/CUCXN/CUPS

    I recently bought a Unitrends Recovery-813 backup system for my organization. I am doing bare metal backups of my critical servers and backups of my data etc... The unit can also do bare metal backups of linux boxes.
    Right now I use the built-in backup system of CUCM/CUCXN/CUPS to backup those systems. I am wondering what the thought or general concensus is of installing a third party backup client on the servers and letting it do full backups of them? My thought is that if I had to, I could quickly bare metal restore onto a replacement unit or hard drives etc... This would potentially lessen the down time of a unit.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Assuming you're using MCS servers, you simply cannot install anything into the Linux appliances. There is no way to install any kind of 3rd party app into them.

    I am using a macbook pro with system 10.6.8. I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule.  There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up.  I did a full reset of Time Machine.  I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up.  Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.

    Many thanks.
    With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:

    The message means that your internal hard has been damaged. This message always comes up when the file system is corrupted. I suggest to remove it, connect the hard drive into a different computer as an external drive (use usb caddy), perform a backup if possible and the format the hard drive and restore the factory settings. I'm afraid that you have to reformat the hard drive, a checkdisk scan won't help..
    The error message means that the Boot Sector is corrupt or has been damaged. It does not mean that the hard disk is damaged.
    This is a fixable issue. There are a few command line tools that can be used.
    You will  need to make an appropriate version (32-bit / 64-bit) of the Windows 7 repair disc from a working Windows 7 installation. You will need either a USB or CD to create your rapair CD/USB. Follow the instructions on this video to create the repair installation of your choice..You will will be using the manual boot sector repair that is described in this video to repair your Windows 7 Boot sector.  Use the Windows 7 repair disc or repair USB thumb drive that you created earlier to accomplish the repair.

  • System/install disk backup copies??

    I just bought an IBook G4, have been using an Icebook duo for several years. With all past Macs I have used and all the install/system disks that came with them, I have been able to backup the originals and stash them safely away. When I went to do that with my new iBook G4 I discovered that it's a dual-layer disk, and my Superdrive doesn't support dual-layer burning! Fortunately, I was able to make a backup copy on my mother's new iMac, which came with a Superdrive that can burn DL disks. I used Toast 7. Then I tried it on my iBook G4 with Toast 7 using the DL compression option, but that only supports DVD-Videos, and it would not copy.
    Why would Apple do this? Provide a system disk that we can't back up? Doesn't make any sense. Or am I missing something?

    Please read the original post. I know how to copy a disk.
    Apple should have provided a boot disk that I could copy on my iBook G4, which does not have the capability of burning dual-layer disks.
    You can't get 5.4GB from a dual-layer DVD onto a 4GB single layer DVD.
    They obviously goofed. I am going to pursue getting a backup boot disk through AppleCare. They owe me that much for this screw-up!
    Hi PacNW,
    Apple's Software License Agreement states that "You
    may make one copy of the Apple Software (excluding
    the boot ROM code) in machine readable form for
    backup purposes only..."
    I don't know how one would set about excluding the
    "boot ROM code".
    A bootable copy can also be made using Disk Utility:
    I can't remember from whose post it was that I saved
    these instructions, thank you to whoever it was, and
    I hope you don't mind me repeating them here...
    "The procedure is for making a copy of the OS DVD
    using Disk Utility and indeed can be used for any
    CD/DVD. First we make an image of the DVD:
    1. Insert Mac OS DVD
    2. Fire up Disk Utility (DU)
    3. Click on the DVD icon in the left pane of DU to
    select it
    4. From the menubar select File->New->Disk image from
    disk...
    5. In the Convert window that appears select where
    you want to save the image - the Desktop is as good a
    place as any.
    6. Again, in the Convert window select DVD/CD Master
    from the Image Format drop down menu
    7. Click Save
    An image of the DVD with a .cdr extension will now be
    created and saved on the desktop. When this completes
    click once on the image, select File->Get Info...
    from the menubar and lock the image by checking
    Locked in the Get Info window.
    Now that we have an image, remove the original DVD.
    DO NOT open the image by double clicking it. We will
    now create DVD using the image:
    1. Fire up DU
    2. In the left hand pane of DU you should see the
    image you created. If you do not see the image, drag
    the image from the desktop to the bottom part of the
    left hand window pane of DU.
    3. Select the image in DU by clicking on it once.
    4. Click on the Burn icon
    You'll be prompted to insert a blank DVD-R media and
    then simply follow the on screen prompts. That's
    it... job done
    If you have Roxio Toast then this has the option of
    making a copy without creating an image. You simply
    insert the OS DVD and just follow the on screen
    prompts... again, just one optical drive is required,
    not two."

  • Error message when trying to install mavericks. It won't let me select a disk to install Mavericks on. Message says "This disk is used to Time Machine backups."  It is NOT used for back ups. help

    When trying to chose a disk on which to install mavericks I get a message that says "this disk is used for Time Machine backups" and cannot be used.  Help!

    I don't know what will help at this point. You should never update a system that has problems, unless you're absolutely sure that the problems are caused by a bug that is fixed in the update. With your backups in an uncertain state, you should not update or do anything else except start a new backup.
