Is anyone else experiencing shorter battery life issues on a MacBook Pro?

I downloaded Mountain Lion and I swear my battery is just zipping down to zero. Is it just me or is this a gerneral problem? Is there anything I can do to rectify this issue?

open up activity monitor - see what's running under ALL PROCESSES - highlight anything that's using 10% and up on the %CPU section and hit quit process....
turn bluetooth off if you're not using it...
turn automatic brightness off
turn off infrared remote receiver if you don't have an Apple Remote
set your screen brightness to 50%...
I'm running Mountain Lion and am getting over 6+ hours...
good luck...

  • Has anyone else been having hard drive issues with 13" MacBook Pro barely a year old?

Has anyone else been having hard drive issues with 13" MacBook Pro barely a year old?

    Yes, BUT...
... there are many problems that are really easy to eliminate by replacing the Hard drive, including ones that have nothing to do with actual Drive Hardware failure. These include corrupted install of Mac OS X, its EFI partition, clobbered partition tables, or the appearance of Bad Blocks in a critical area.
Any of these problems can sometimes be eliminated by re-initializing the entire drive and writing Zeroes, and re-installing from scratch. The trouble is, this process takes hours to complete, and is not guaranteed to be successful -- you may still need a new drive after all that effort.
I learned from my Plumber that consumers have no appetite for solutions that might work, and detest return visits for any related problems whatsoever. You or your friend may have had your drive replaced, not because it actually failed, but because the situation was troublesome, and the provider thought you would not tolerate anything less than a crisp, complete fix on the first attempt. And based on the cost of technician time, it may have even been cheaper that way.

What makes you so sure it isn't software?
The camera can be focused by take the point of focus on the touch screen.
If it is new as you said, it should be under warranty. Make a Genius Bar appointment or contact Apple with a repair request.

  • Has anyone encountered drastic shorter battery life both on iphone 5 and ipad since updating to iOS 6.1.2? How can this problem be solved?

    Dear all,
I am new to this community even though I have been a Apple user for years, so please forgive me if this question is not in the right section.
Has anyone encountered drastic shorter battery life both on iphone 5 and ipad since updating to iOS 6.1.2? I've always been happy with these two products until the update - now the battery life is considerably shorter which is extremely frustrating.
How can this problem be solved? Is there any way to go back to the previous version?
    Thanks for your help.

If you update using iTunes the phone is first wiped clean, then the new OS is installed, and finally the backup is restored. After this finishes if you sync your music should be restored. Music is not in the backup, because it is already on your computer and duplicating it would use up a lot of hard disk space.
An OTA update just patches what has changed; it does not disturb content.

  • Does OS X Mavericks shorten a battery life time in Retina Macbook Pro?

Does OS X Mavericks shorten a battery life time in Retina Macbook Pro?

Thank you again for your advice, and I am sure your right but as a simplton I have to argue that the problem is asociated with Mavericks in so much as - one does not have any of these issues running any previous OS and therefore, the issue is a Mavericks one when upgrading.  It is all to easy for the techies to say "its on your mac' if proper testing and development had been done on,  at the very least , the apple software the upgrade should not have issues.  its a bit late after installing and having Apple update remind you all the time to upgrade then to say sorry - your fault for having incompatible software like mail .  However, I suggest you look at the other apple logs / site that complain of battery drain after mavericks they all point to issues that are as a RESULT of the upgrade and yes technically you will argue that is because the original software in not compatible or some such.  Lets not go on and on I have sorted the problem - don't use Mail and battery life is OK, Use mail and watch it drain.  Once again thank you please don't feel the need to respond.

  • After upgrade to Lion, iMovie 11 won't recognize my ReadyNas disk.  Anyone else experiencing application NAS connectivity issues after upgrading to Lion?

I have a ReadyNas NV+ which I use as NAS storage.  I make a lot of home movies in iMovie 11 (mostly family movies of my daughter growing up) which fills up my local HDD fairly quickly.  I setup iMovie 11 when I was using Snow Leopard to connect to my NAS as an additional disk in the event library and project.  I would move events and projects after I finalized and shared them to the NAS disk in iMovie so it would both clear up space on my local HDD but still be available in the iMovie 11 application.
After I upgraded to Lion, I can no longer see the NAS disk in either the project library or event library.  I'm concerned if I have created a condition where I won't be able to access the projects and events which I moved to the NAS disk when I upgraded to Lion.  Has anyone else experienced this issue and has anyone else found a solution to this?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did that work for you?  I was looking at that too, but was discouraged by having to use a sparsebundle given Snow Leopard had such great NAS support.
FYI to everyone else, I upgraded my ReadyNAS firmware to 4.1.8.  NetGear indicated the following updates with the nre firmware, but it didn't fix this problem:
         New features and enhancements
         1. Added support for Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion”.
         2. Added warning when NFS access to home shares is enabled.
         3. Added a redirect for http://<host>/ip to https.
         4. Added enhancements to advanced AFP permission settings.
         5. Provide download links for exported users and groups instead of asking for email.
         6. Updated ReadyNAS Remote to the latest revision.
         Bug fixes
         1. Fixed javascript error in FrontView.
         2. Delay auto power-off if backup jobs are still queued.
         Limitations
         1. IE 6 no longer supported.
         2. Drives greater than 2TB are not supported.
I found this link which I thought had some useful information: http://carryflag.blogspot.com/2010/06/imovie-event-library-on-network-drive.html
Some people reported success with the terminal command:
defaults write -app iMovie allowNV -bool true
But apparantly, after the Lion update, fewer people reported success with it.  Still looking though... If anyone else has more symptoms to add, please let me know.  I might try to use a sniffer program and see if I can pull a packet capture.  That might reveal some info....
On another note, has anyone had any problems connecting to their Time Capsule in the same fashion?  I had an idea of connecting a USB Raid Array to it and connecting through the TC, but wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts or experience with that....  Thanks.

  • Anybody else experiencing horrible battery life

Well sold my iPhone to get the trophy. I know I wouldn't get the same battery lasting that I got with the iPhone but I'm lucky to get through a 1/4 of the day on a full charge. That's being a light user. Has anyone else had this problem. I mean I turned down brightness etc. Any ideas?

I have thrown everything at this phone and at the worst had to charge it once a day.  I also have Wi-Fi turned off since the 3G is good enough for most web browsing experience.  Blue Tooth always on, played 4 hours of music to bluetooth speakers and another 4 hours in my car through a Parrot bluetooth speaker system.
Unless you need to be connected to wi-fi, turn it off and conserve some battery juice.  I believe it is on by default as well as the auto find wi-fi networks & notification.  My results were also with the wi-fi turned on until I manually turned it off.  Battery life is really good on this phone, 1000% better than my HTC Imagio.  Sometimes you just get a bad battery, and you should be able to replace it under the 30 day warranty like most retail stores.
I absolutely love this phone and am really excited about Windows 8 coming around the corner. Thanks to Microsoft releasing new video showing off the new interface, which is basically the next version of Windows Phone 7 UI with more goodies.
I really think Windows Phone 7 UI is perfect for smartphones and would work great with tablets.  The phone experience has been exciting so much so I find myself having problems putting it down... LOL
Besides coverage drop offs like crazy, which were happening 2 days before I got the Trophy... so I know it's NOT THE PHONE!!!  Did the *228 trick and coverage was back to normal.
I usually tell everyone on Verizon to get in the habbit of dialing *228 every month so that you download the latest cell towers added to the network to your phone... giving you better coverage.
Make sure you don't hit the camera button while your on a call. It will disconnect your call and without the disconnect beep. I have done this numerous times, and I think this needs to be addressed in the update.  Also make sure you download HTC Attentive Phone App which gives you more phone functions for incoming calls and ring types.
Overall experience has been 10++ vs. my old HTC Imagio. Once Pandora, Skype, and possible USB drive access like WinMobile 6.5 on the way... I can't wait!!! This phone Rocks!!!
I also bought a nice hard plastic case and clear screen protectors on Ebay for phone and they work great.  Have a couple destop cradles coming hopefully this week. Unfortantely, the cradle makes you charge the phone on it's side. No big deal, it's not like I am playing with the phone while its on the charger. I can still stream bluetooth music and that's all I care about.  The power connection is a micro usb cable, so no problems with capatibility issues with power supplies.

  • HT1338 How can I conserve battery life on my new macbook pro? I got it 2 weeks ago and am noticing that the battery depletes quickly. I dim the screen and keyboard backlight & mainly use Safari (multiple tabs).

    Appreciate any help!

My daughter also just bought a Mac Book Pro 13" with the same issue. When we migrated over from the old computer, we brought over only her documents, no applications, and she was getting only about a 2 hour battery life on the new MBP.  Somewhere in the MBP threads in this forum someone who was experiencing this same battery life problem said he was told by an Apple Genius in a retail store to try setting up a second user, and then to try working out of that user only. So we set up the second user, logged out of the old user,  and the battery life readout is now about six hours after a charge when my daughter is logged in as the new user. If she needs old documents or other files she can always log in as the old user to use them, but she rarely has to go back. Whenever  she is logged on as the old user the battery life shows under two hours, but when she she logs out and logs back in as the new user it jumps back up to around six hours.
There seems to be no need to eliminate the files etc. that reside under the old user. As long as my daughter is logged out as the old user and logged in as the new user, the battery life is much better. Weird solution, but it seems to be working. She is running Lion 10.7.4.
         Hope this helps.

  • Battery Life really terrible on MacBook Pro...

I have a MacBook Pro 17 inch and it has only 101 cycles on battery, yet it only lasts for about 2 1/2 hours max when fully charged.  The computer is 1 1/2 years old and I just use it for personal use...which really isn't that much.  Any thoughts? Thanks

My Macbook Pro is 4 years old and I still get approximately 5 hrs of battery life under normal usage with no more than 2 applications open at a time.  Playing downloaded games or games played directly from a cd , I get around 4 - 4 1/2 hours.  I faithfully calibrate my battery every other month per my user manual schedule.
I never watch movies while using my battery.

  • Battery Life on my 17" MacBook Pro

    Hey guys,
So I just bought a early 2011 17" MacBook Pro and was wondering what the battery life should be like. I have the brightness on half, keyboard lights on full, and I have been on facebook, apple, and watching a movie, and the battery life is already on 63%. I don't know if this is normal, or is there something wrong with my battery? I called applecare and they said that it just depends on usage, but I'm still kind of worried because the computer was $2458 and I want to make sure that everything it in check for this kinda of money.
    Please answer/reply soon!!!!
    Alexander

So would what I was doing be considered heavy usage? Thanks for answering
Depends.  Screen brightness on half is good, but keyboard lights on isn't.  If you're using the internet, presumably you're doing that wirelessly, and having AirPort turned on drains power faster due to the need to constantly broadcast radio signals.  (Bluetooth is the same.)  Watching a movie isn't a low-power thing to do, and if you were watching it from a DVD in the optical drive, keeping that spinning eats even more power.
What you were doing isn't as high a usage as, say, playing a graphically-intense 3D game, but it's not something that will help your battery last longer either.

  • Battery Life on brand new macbook pro 15 inch i5 only lasting 3 hours

The battery on my macbook pro is only lasting 3 hours with light use...If i'm watching a video or on a game it lasts maybe an hour or 2. I charged it fully when I first got it out of the box 2 days ago.
I have tried calibrating it which worked a little bit. But still nothing like the promised 8 hours. Not even near 6 hours.
    Can anybody help?

I tell you how to maximise it mate .. Fully charge your battery and leave it on charge for 2 hours .and then create the minimum power consumption scenario ( kill bluetooth , minimise brightness , kill all apps etc ) AND THEN remove the plug .. use at this state until about 70% charge and continuously monitor the capacity like I mentioned earlier when you see it hit a high, plug it in you will see now that will become your permanent capacity .. allow full charge and leave it plugged for a day . .repeat the same .. after about a week now this time do the same but reduce down to the 40% range and always plug in at a high capacity point..you will train you r battery this way ..
I am glad I could help .. altho it took a bit of fighting the external obstructions it's all good
    take care ,,

  • Possible work-around for v3.0 short battery life

First: be aware there's a difference between "Push" (which is for some email account types & some MobileMe features) and "Push Notifications" (which is for apps). They are controlled in separate Settings screens.
    Short story:
If you've upgraded to v3.0, usually have Wifi ON, and experiencing short battery life, and if you can live without Push Notifications (at least until Apple finds a better solution), TRY TURNING "Push Notifications" OFF.
Alternatively, if you can live without Wifi but need Push Notifications, try turning Wifi off & let the data travel via 3G.
    Long story:
First I ran alternate days with Wifi ON, then Wifi OFF, and noticed with Wifi OFF my battery life was nowhere near as short (I could get through a day), but with Wifi ON, I can barely get through half a day. This is very different to v2.21, and in my setup the only significant difference was Push Notifications being ON.
Then today I've been running continuous pings from my Mac to my iPhone, with various combinations of Push on/off, Push Notifications on/off, email accounts on push / fetch / manual, and discovered there's a huge difference in how often Wifi gets turned on when Push Notifications is enabled.
With Push Notifications ON, while your iPhone 3G (and probably 3GS) is asleep, Wifi will be turned on for 15-20seconds every 1 to 2 minutes!
This is in stark contrast to Push Notifications OFF, but Push (for email, MobileMe, etc) ON, where Wifi is on only as often as your email account settings dictate.
This explains a lot, I think. With Wifi OFF, data goes through the 2G/3G radio, which is inherently ON all the time (for phone functionality), so the incremental 'cost' (to battery life) of Push Notifications is comparatively small.
But with Wifi enabled, data is instead sent via Wifi. The incremental cost (to battery life) is dramatically higher having to turn on the Wifi radio, find the WLAN, get an IP from DHCP, then exchange data with various Internet servers, when it happens every couple of minutes!
Though I'm not really sure what Apple can do about this situation. They appear to be turning Wifi on frequently to give the illusion of true (ie timely) push notifications. I think this situation runs parallel to those who found, with v2.x, that enabling Push on email accounts & Wifi enabled had similar major negative impact on battery life. Except now heaps more people want the Push Notification feature. Interesting conundrum...

The main thing that helped me with the short battery life was lowering the brightness. My 3G was so bright I could'nt sleep at night.
