Is anyone else's new iMac slower?

Hi
I have recently upgraded to the new Intel iMac, and, although it has greater specs across the board, it definitely seems slower than my G5 iMac with lesser specs. When switching applications, it's particularly bad - almost like it's sticky. It's a bummer to get a new machine that is slower! I have also heard there is some compatability issue with the Intel stuff. Anyone got any clues?
Thanks a million.

You have to be aware of the fact that some applications will be running in emulated mode (Rosetta). These are the programs that are written for the old PPC series chips (G3, G4 and G5). You will see a slow down for those applications as its having to emulate the PPC cpu on an Intel cpu. For applications that are written to work with both cpu's (PPC and Intel) the software is refered to as Universal code and its that software where you will see a lot of improvement. It will take time for all software to be rewritten into universal code (and some may never be converted as it will run okay in emulation). Right now all of the core OS X and iLife applications are universal and on my iMac 20 intel machince I can see a big difference in the performance between my old G4 mac.
One item which may cause slow downs is the amount of ram you have, the emulation software Rosetta really likes a lot of ram and I suggest at least 1gig to get good performance with non universal software. You can check if software is universal or PPC by doing a get info on the icon and under the General section you will see at the top the program KIND it will say something like "Application (PowerPC)" or "Application (Universal)"
I havent seen any slowdown when switching applications however the only thing that i have seen be a little slower is when i select the right mouse button it takes a little longer to come up with the menu that it used to on my previous G4 Mac but its not really an issue as its not really that long.
Compatability seems so far to be 100% for me in that everything that I've tried running on it works and that includes the vast majority of my older programs. The main issue you may have is for applications that ran under Classic mode on your G5 as there is no Classic mode on the new Intel macs.
good luck and enjoy your new intel mac. Its a very good machine and I even have it dual booting into Win XP to play the odd game of Battlefield 2 but for everything else (iLife, Surfing, emails) i use Mac os X.

  • New iMacs slow to open programs compared to previous model?

    Hi all,
I have noticed something while looking at the new iMacs on display in store:
While a previous-model (just superseded) 24" 3.0g ghz dual-core opens iMovie in 4 seconds, the new models repeatedly take 40 seconds or more to do the very same thing. On different machines...in different stores...same thing happens.
When questioned why, the assistant looked at me uncomfortably and said "Yes, I have learned Apple has supplied us with demo machines installed with the incorrect display drivers..." Huh? Demo machines? Wrong display drivers?
I think he was trying to have a lend of me...surely (a) Apple doesn't supply demo machines to the outlets and, (b) they wouldn't install graphics drivers separately to the rest of the system software.
Anyway...has anyone else noticed the slow performance of the new iMacs when opening programs?
    Cheers.

myhighway, what's your point in relation to my original observation?
What I was saying was that it was interesting that the new models were - in my experience - quite a bit slower than the older model. I had experienced this in two different stores. Had anyone noticed/experienced this and what could be the reason? I just thought the sales guys explanation was a bit flaky at best. I was making a simple observation...no biggy.
Whatever the reason for whatever Apple does (who cares?) it was interesting to note that the newer models appeared slower than the old.
Oh and by the way, I have been a very proud Mac owner since my first in 2003. Will never buy anything else but a Mac now, unless I really have to. So I am already - well and truly - a mac convert.

  • New iMac slowing down entire network's internet

I recently purchased a new iMac (warning, I'm a PC user up until a few days ago), and have noticed that any time I have the iMac on (idle, having just started up) the internet for the other 2 computers on the networks drags terrible (long page load times, etc)
It's as if the new machine is hogging up all the bandwidth, while doing nothing.
I've experienced this problem in the past, when my younger brother was home from college & had his macbook. Any time he was on his macbook, the connection for the rest of the network would become unreliable. This was on a completely different network from the one I'm currently having a problem with.
Has anyone else run into this problem?
Being new to Macs, I'm not even sure where to start looking for the problem.
Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I'd start by going to System Preferences > Network click on Ethernet or Airport or both and be sure your setup is correct. There's an "Assist me" button in each.
EDIT: I'd also suggest you take a look atSwitch 101. There's a wealth of info there.

  • Does anyone like their new iMac screen?????

I am going to be recommending a new imac for some friends and wanted to know if there is anyone that likes the new screens on their iMac?
I know only people with problems post on here, but just wanted to see if there are any happy iMac users.
    thanks in advance

For the past 4 years, I've been using the Powerbook G4 laptop and I prefer the matte screen display. When I saw the new iMacs, the only thing I didn't like was the glossy screen, but everything else was awesome about the iMac. In the end, I decided that the glossy screen wasn't SO bad. The only time it's really irritating is during daytime when the light reflects off the screen. Since my iMac is in my bedroom, I can just pull down the blinds and it'll shield the sunlight from 'attacking' my iMac glossy screen. Or, you can increase the screen brightness, and it helps take away the reflections.. not 100%, but most of it.
I've gotten used to the glossy screen now, and yes, it does make my Powerbook G4 screen look quite dull. Haha. I still use my G4 for school purposes, so it's not going into the can just yet...
Yeah, that's my take on the screen. So, yes, I do like the new iMac screen.

  • Does anyone else's new MBP 13'' 2012 freezes constantly?

I bought the new MBP 13 inch (mid 2012), and the only problem i'm having is that it contantly freezes. I have to hold the power button to fix this. I did the software update Apple offered but didn't fix this problem. Anyone else having this problem?
    Thanks.

If you bought it directly from apple either online or in one of their apple stores, you have a 14 day grace period in which to try the product and return it if you aren't satisfied. Don't even bother going through tech support if a new product shoes problems straight away, return it and get another.

  • New iMac slower after upgrade to Yosemite...

I recently (2-3 months ago) purchased a 21.5 inch iMac, with the following specs:
    Mavericks OS X
1 GB Fusion HD (The HD contains approx. 500 GB of data, i.e. +/- a little over half full)
    3.1 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB DDR3
I use the BlueTooth keyboard, trackpad and mouse.
Connected to it, via a Lightning cable, is a 4 TB external HD for my media and vast iTunes library.
I also use Bose external speakers.
I run Parallels 9, (fully updated) to be able to access and run certain business related programmes, that I absolutely cannot run on an Apple, specifically, Airbus CBT (computer based training) courses.
I was immensely happy with the machine. It was fast, the graphics are awesome and it was a pleasure to work with. Frankly, it runs Windows 7 in parallel, faster than any PC I've ever seen, but I honestly only use it when I absolutely have to!
When Yosemite became available, I immediately upgraded to it, as was the plan from the beginning. The upgrade went without a hitch, save to say, there was a short power interruption during the download. I followed the instructions and installed the new OS, and commenced using it. I immediately noticed that upon switching between applications and programmes, there was a several second delay between clicking or selecting the app, thereafter the colour "thinking wheel" would appear for several more seconds and only then would the selected task or operation happen, allowing further selections or options to be made. This is a very noticeable and annoying delay, sometimes as much as 10 seconds, that did not occur whilst using Mavericks.
Even within certain apps or programmes, for example, mail, there are these same delayed responses. For example - if I click on the reply tab, there is a 3 to 4 second delay, followed by the coloured wheel for another 3 to 4 seconds, before the reply mail appears and I'm able to continue. So too, in iTunes, if I select a different track, or move between movies and music, there is this seemingly incessant delay between selections and activity. Granted, I have a vast media collection on an external drive, but it is via a Lightning connection. I don't remember USB connections being as slow...
I spent several minutes yesterday, on the phone to an Apple Care specialist in Europe, discussing another problem with my MacBook Pro, and when I mentioned this, he suggested several things to try - forcing Spotlight to re-index the drive, etc, and even he at this early time, was able to find where in Yosemite you can see if this process, (re-indexing) is being carried out - but nothing seems to have improved anything.
Am I being unreasonable in expecting it all to run as smoothly and as quickly as it used to? Should I have waited before upgrading my machine? Did I do anything wrong or can you suggest anything that might restore my pride and joy to it's original lightning fast like behaviour?
Cheers and thanks in advance for any help or recommendations you might have.

  • Does anyone else have an iMac that displays a non-selected desktop image at start-up?

I bought my system new in 2009. It's a 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo Intel processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 installed memory. I'm running OSx 10.6.8 Mavericks. The behavior of not displaying my chosen desktop image is new and disturbing. Although the problem seems to be malevolent and non destructive, the cause of the condition is difficult to understand & correct. If Macintosh has designed this to indicate a more serious problem, I salute the protocol but now ask for conditions that may trigger my machine to ignore it's user directed programming and decide to display a 'default' desktop image. Interestingly, at the same time the correct image remains on the Display tab of 'System Information' page . What's wrong with my untouchable, reliable, uncrackable Mac? A more obvious sign of corruption is the sporadic temporary freezing, from a few seconds up to what seems to last over a minute, of most media. It happens while using many different players including iTunes, iDVD player, VLC, Quicktime, Flip4Mac, etc. Any intended help with either or both of these glitches will be reviewed and appreciated. MikeL

I'm trying to work out if it's just this mac I'm working on, or actual bugs/annoyances of InDesign CS5 (version I'm using is 5.5)..
    What version of OS X?
WHat exact vesion of InDesign? Hold down Cmd and select About InDesign. Is it 7.5.2.318 or something else?
    3) ID doesn't quit when I tell it to (but it loves to 'unexpectedly quit' which I'm guessing is this mac more than ID)
No, this is InDesign's fault. Post a crash report to http://pastebin.com/ and post a link here and we'll tell you why it happens.
Most of your items sound like some third party software interfering with InDesign. They don't sound like normal problems.

  • New iMac slow - should I do a "clean install"?

I recently bought an iMac 27 inch. I used the migration assistant to move my old accounts and stuff across to it from my old (now sold) Mac Pro. Which was updated using migration assistant from the previous Mac Pro.
I find it's not all that 'snappy'. And one thing I notice is that other Macs on my network see the iMac as Mac Pro (I guess a legacy of the old Mac Pro). I have it all backed up onto an external hard drive using Time Machine.
Is there a way to reinstall the system software while keeping my settings, accounts and stuff (if possible)? Something like a 'clean install'? Or some other way.
    Cheers,
    David

You've migrated old files from your Mac Pro that are not compatible.  My suggestion is to reinstall:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • New IMAC slowing down with spinning ball

I've had my MAC for about 3 weeks (I switched from a PC). Today it started slowing down. First whe n I tried to print something and then when I was in Excel (Office for MAC 2004). Both times it didn't do anything for a minute and then the clorful spinning ball thing appeared. About a minute later it finished what I was doing (saving a template file).
I looked at the system memory and I have 2GB of RAM with an OK status. I have two printers - one USB attached to my MAC and the other on another computer (Windows) that I am sharing. This was not a problem before, so I don't expect this to be the issue, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.
    I haven't bought virus software yet - perhaps I have a virus?
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Macs don't get viruses, so you can rule that out. Do you have any shared drives or network connections? Something there could be slowing things down. If you do have some connections, try disconnecting them and see if that speeds up your access. When was the last time you rebooted the machine? You could always try that.
There is a utility in applications\utilities called "Activity Monitor". You could look there to see if anything is hogging the memory or processor. Have you installed anything recently?

  • Relatively new iMac slow and stutters all of a sudden

I've been through all of the forums (I think), but nothing i've found seems to do the trick. Please bear with me, because i know that this is a common post, but I'm frustrated.
    My symptoms are:
    1. Machine seems to have intermittent freezes and spinny ball. Not total lockup, just stuttering.
    2. Programs take forever to launch (compared to before)
    3. File saves take forever (compared to before)
    4. ALL video and motion apps stutter (quicktime, youtube, eyeTV, moving cursor on garageband, final cut)
    5. Takes forever to shutdown/restart (compared to before)
The machine is still usable, for the most part, but NOT usable for anything video at this point.
    My machine specs:
    1. 2.8 GHz 24" iMac (mid 2008)
    2. 4G RAM
Things I've tried to diagnose or fix it:
    1. Restart: didn't make a difference
    2. Repair permission on disk: didn't make a difference
    3. Disk repair on boot volume: didn't make a difference
    4. Ran the cocktail system and disk maintenance scripts: didn't make a difference
    5. Monitored activity with Activity monitor and unix "ps" during the problems: didn't see anything stick out
    6. Looked through the console and system logs: nothing stuck out
    7. Have run the h/w diagnostics from the OS X disk: no issues
    8. Have reset PRAM/NVRAM: Had a scare here, because i did this, and then the machine would NOT start back up. Just got the white screen (pre-apple logo and spinner), and it sat there forever. Had to do #9 below to get it back.
    9. Reset the SMC: Well, it allowed me to actually boot the thing, but didn't make any performance difference.
    10. Performed general cleanup of the HDD to purge anything not needed: no help
    11. Drank Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock: Helped me, but not the machine.
Notice I have not yet tried to reinstall OS. I can't imagine why that would work. The problem here should also have nothing to do with any recently installed app, since nothing has been installed. The only thing that may have been installed would have been an Apple update (OS or other). Not sure i can pinpoint this to an Apple update because I don't when exactly the problems started in relation to the updates.
Any ideas, or places to look?
    thanks

    Hi John
Before doing a Reinstall or Archive and Install you might want to first download and install the 10.5.7 Combo Update to see if that makes a difference. The 10.5.7 Combo Update can solve minor issues within the OS X and would insure that your software is completely up to date.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1057comboupdate .html
If however you decide or wish to reinstall the OS X, an Archive and Install will save your data where as a Reinstall will wipe all your current data.

I also noted that a MacBook just showed up in your profile. If it's a PPC MacBook and you migrated to the Intel, you maybe having software compatibility issues.

  • Has anyone else had new security questions from app store today?

Unannounced, apparently random (my colleages havent had this), intrusive and a personal data security risk? I'm not downloading apps until I know for sure its legitimate.  Even then, I think its too much information, when its just apps.

Did you check out the link that I posted above. Apparently this is now pretty easy to find discussions about it everywhere. Look at some of these.

Based on the sources, as well as the volume, I'd say it's legit. Haven't seen myself yet, but I have difficulty getting to the app store at work due to network security policies.

  • Has anyone else noticed it is slow in 60606?  I wish everyone would go back to AT&T.

Service is worse than ever.  Coverage is good but can pass data to save your life.  It sure feels like there are too many users on VzW.  It is bad at Edison Park too.

hello luislast, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware/malware on your pc. please go to firefox > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and do a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and/or a different tool like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes].

  • HT4528 slow repsonse with I phone interface  since  new update anyone else having issues?

    Hello all ,
I was woundering if anyone else was having very slow response times on using the I phones after they updated the new OS7.2 ?  I went from lighting speed response to almost no or little response on my i phone i cant even delete my old voice mails. i have to repetely tap and slide many times in a row for the phone to do basic function things pre update was no problem? And im not talking provider issues just basic function with the phone it self .

Thank you for your response Dilbert41
its not a lag issue its a problem with the software it self causing it to be slow in response for example when i want to use the phone i have to slide the bar to use it it takes many times of sliding the slider to operate it same if i want to see my phots or check my voice mail or text and make a call there was nothing wrong with these basic functions with 7.0, 7.1 but theres a problem now with the newest update plus im not the only one that i know of with this problem my wife has the newest i phone and same issue and settings didnt help problem is still there anyone else have any ideas ? or was this update just rushed out with  many bugs ? will there be a fix ?

  • Anyone else find Leopard slow?

Is it just me or is Leopard so slooow?
I have a dual core MacPro with a gig of ram.
Radeon X1900 video card with 30 and 23 inch cinema displays (I found the firmware update for that and updated it)
World of Warcraft for example is virtually unplayable it is so slow.
Luckily I had a full back up HD that I can boot from in Tiger.
Anyone else think Leopard is slow?
    Looking forward to Cheetah

i'd have to agree. EVERYTHING on my macbook pro got slower. whether we're talking about restarting, starting, logging in, opening stuff,...just everything is slow. i dunno what to do.. hopefully there will be some software updates. i think that EventAgent thing should be adressed too. thats person up there^ isnt the first person i've heard talking about that. so yea. just keep your fingers crossed and hope there is some nice software updates coming our way.
