Is Aperture 3 a 16 bit processing program

As I do some astrophotography, I am looking for an alternative to PS, which is far too expensive... Is Aperture 3 processing RAW images in
16 bits, as does PS... I understand it can open and save files in 16 bit, but is the processing donné in 16 bit...

You're referring to bit depth or instruction word length?
Aperture  3.2.2 in Lion is 64 bit program code.
As for image bit depth Aperture works on the full resolution master files when you do your adjustments so that depends on your masters if you import an 8 bit jpg that's all Aperture has to work with.
As far as exporting goes Aperture is capable of exporting 16 bit full size tiffs.

What is the best word processing program for Mac?

That's an impossible question to answer - what type of writing will you be doing?
Before we can point you in a direction you need to tell us what kind of writing you will be doing. As phrased, the question is a bit like "what's the best car?" Well few would doubt that a Ferrari is superior to a Honda minivan, but the Ferrari will not much use if you're dragging 4 kids, two dogs and the grandparents along.
    Academic?
Word is the nearest thing to a standard format in the Humanties, but in the sciences and math you'll find Tex more useful for laying out formulas. The older Pages is quite good as a substitute for Word in many cases in the Humanties, but you'll have big problems with citations in the newer version. Apps like Nisus Writer Pro and Mellel are more powerful than Pages, but each have shortcomings. Scrivener and Ulysses are excellent drafting tools but you'll need a Word Processor for final layout. There are lots and lots of lightweight editors out there - Byword, iaWriter (and Writer Pro), OmmWriter - that have little functional use in Academic settings - poor or no support for citations for instance, or poor or no interoperability with Word - but which might be excellent for other uses.
So, back to the key question: what kind of writing will you be doing?

  • My word processing program (pages) disappeared.  It is not in the trash or Finder.  How do I get it back?  Thanks

My word processing program (Pages) disappeared.  It is not in the Finder or the Trash and I can no longer open the files created there.  Thank you if you can help?

Have you tried a Spotlight search (top right of menu bar)? Pages normally resides in Macintosh HD>Applications>iWork folder.
If it has somehow disappeared have you got the iWork installer disk to re-install, or if you bought it from the Mac App Store you should be able to re-download it without having to pay again.
Edited to add the 'iWork folder' klaus1 mentioned - I forgot that bit ;)

  • Internet Explorer 11 not executing 32-bit processes

Haven't found another posting exactly like this, so I am making one. I have a workstation running Windows 7 SP1 x64 with Internet Explorer 11 (v.11.0.9600.17728). I have a third-party 32-bit ActiveX Control that needs to run in this browser. However, every
time I execute iexplore, it opens as a 64 bit process.  My understanding was that by default, IE11 runs a 64-bit wrapper, with 32-bit tabs, however when I check Task Manager, all I am seeing is a single iexplore.exe process, no iexplore.exe*32, no matter
how many tabs I open, I only see the single iexplore process. I also cannot click and drag tabs to spawn separate IE windows; the tabs are all stuck in the single Internet Explorer window. I've tried manually running iexplore from the x86 Program Files folder
and it still only runs the single 64-bit process. I'm looking for some guidance as to where to go next as this user needs to run this add-on and can't unless I can successfully get the 32-bit IE tabs to open.  The last version that I've confirmed successfully
opened iexplore*32 processes was IE9, which was on here previously. IE10 and 11 have both failed to execute separate processes. Any assistance is much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
Based on my test, same result with Frederik. For your situation, have you tried to reset IE for test?
In addition, Enable IE protected mode and turn on 64 bit tab option is not help with this problem. If you doubt it is Group Policy problem, you can use GPresult command to check if there is any settings about IE.
Open CMD with Administrator, type  GPRESULT /H GPReport.html
After that, type .\GPReport.html command to open the report.
If no use, you can try to use Process Monitor to check IE startup process for test. We may found some clue with this problem.

  • Unable to close Photoshop CS4 (64 bit) - Process in Windows Task Manager remains open

    Hi everyone,
    I've just upgraded to CS4
When i launch Photoshop for the first time, it's running normally.
But if i close it, it seems to be closed, but a photoshop.exe (64 bit) process is still remaining in memory and i can't launch
Photoshop until a kill the first process.
The computer is is Windows Vista 64 bit with 8GB of RAM and a Ndivia Geforce 9400 GT graphic card.
The problems remains if I disable OpenGL or reset prefs.
I only have the 64 bit application installed and for the rest seems fine.
    All help is welcome !

I assume you reboot the computer after removing the buggy software?
I would do a search on your computer for the software and see if there are any remaining folders. If so remove them and reboot.
This is a good free removal software. It is called CCleaner and it will remove any junk remaining on your computer. Give that a try. It also has a registry cleaner too.
Up to you if you wish to use the registry cleaner. May help because there might be something left over from removing the software that is triggering the problem still.

  • Aperture won't "quit" and processing very slowly

I'm running Aperture 3.4.1 on  a late 2009, 27 inch iMac with 8GB of RAM.
Since I downloaded version 3.4.1 I'm finding that Aperture is incredibly slow in processing smallish batches of photos (e.g. 60 x 15.5MB RAW files).
I've left it running for 24 hours and find that as soon as I try to edit a photo adjustments don't show up in the preview, because it's either "loading" (and never stops loading) or "processing."
When I try to quit Aperture either by selecting Quit or the little x in the top left of the window, nothing happens. And yet, I'm not getting any indication that Aperture is "not responding" if I open Force Quit or the Activity Monitor.
Very frustrating, as I'm trying to edit some photos for family member, and can't really do a thing.
My library is 421GB and not referenced (maybe that's part of the problem; I don't know)
Any sage advice will be appreciated.
    cheers,
    Nick

The first step did nothing for me,
You really could not work with a new, empty library from your account?
Switching back to my main account though and removing the user preferences did not change a thing though.
o.k., did you also try to remove your presets, not only the preferences com.aperture.plist?
The presets are in the folder:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/
and especially the Raw decode Presets occasionally are causing trouble.
Remove  the Image capture preferences as well; see this post by fof:
Re: Aperture 3.4 will not open after 10.8.2 installed
Quit Aperture, if it is running:
Open the user library by using the Finder's "Go > Go to Folder" menu,
    enter    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost   into the textfield.
In the widow that will open, remove all files from the "ByHost" folder, that have "com.apple.ImageCapture......" in its name.
From the "Preferences" folder  remove "com.apple.Image_Capture.plist".
Then try to launch Aperture again.

Pages 4.3 was a useful technical word processing program; Pages 5 is not. Does anone know is Apple intends to improve Pages 5 at least to the level of Pages 4.3?

We used 4.3 as an effective tool for thesis production but in many ways it has become kind of a simplistic joke. Sad indeed and I wish there was some evidence they were remotely concerned. PeterBreis0807's response of "No" is spot on. We will continue to use 4.3 as long as it works as a time-saving substitute for Word.

Not quite. Downloading the current version of NeoOffice is definitely not free (downloading the previous version is). The developers of NeoOffice (the most Mac-like of the StarOffice descendants) make a distinction between the application itself (which is free) and downloading it, for which they require what they are pleased to call a "donation" (since it's mandatory, I would call it a fee).

Indeed. For basic WP tasks, TextEdit can be quite satisfactory.

I only need it for reports
Would that include the report on the state of the US economy -- you know, the one President Obama asked you to deliver to the White House no later than 7AM on January 4? The one in two columns, with numbered paragraphs, table of contents, footnotes, mathematical formulae, 40 figures, 60 charts, quotations in Arabic, Japanese, and classical Greek, and 15 pages of references in APA style?
Grant Bennet-Alder is right -- "the real answer depends on what work you expect to do with it, and with whom you expect to do this work". There are dozens of word processors for Mac, from the venerable Word to the no less venerable Tex-Edit+. It would pointless to start listing them all, when many of them might be either too little or too much for your needs.

  • How do I make Pages the default word processing program?

How do I make Pages the default word processing program, including Appleworks files?
I want any Appleworks file I open to open in Pages - is there a setting to make that happen?

    Hello ADW,
To change the default programme used to open a filetype, Get Info on one of the files you are looking to set, the change the Open With selection to Pages.
Then click on Use this application to open all documents like this one.
You will have to repeat this for each file type you want to use that way.
    Have a wonderful day!

We upgraded our Mac OS X to a Maverick in order to run a Dragon Program. However, we no longer have a word processing program!  Appleworks is not supported.  Doesn't the upgraded Maverick have a word processing program included?

Not included.  You can purchase Pages in the App Store, or use a free word processor like Bean or a free office suite like  LibreOffice or OpenOffice (and there's also MicroSoft Office for Mac)

  • Some performance counter objects are not available for a 32-bit process on 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2012 standard

When we try to gather performance counter information for a 32-bit process on a 64-bit computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2012, all our performance counter objects are not available with 32 bit perfmon application (C:\Windows\SysWOW64\perfmon.exe)
I didn't notified any errors while registering our counter objects or while running Perfmon.exe
Note: Same counter objects are available and working fine with Windows Server 2008 R2.
for diagnostic our counters on WIN2012, ran command as follows:
     cd c:\windows\sysWOW64
     lodctr /Q
I am able to see all our counter objects on response and infact all were shown as enabled, as shown below
Appreciate quiclk response with solution or clues to diagnose it more details.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
I hope you understood our problem.
same our system counter objects (ver x), we able to browse from Perfmon 32 bit app on Windows 7, Windows 2008 R2 (64bit) OS but not on Windows 2012.
I am able to see all counter objects registered as follows (same at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\HMI Alarm Class\Performance,
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\HMI Alarm Class\Performance
    and
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HMI Alarm Class\Performance)
Only difference I observed that "Disable Performance Counters" were set to 4 in Windows 2012 OS unlike other windows 7 64bit OS and there is no differnece for remaining all entires.
I tried setting that "Disable Performance Counters" value to "0", but some how they get reset to "4", no luck..
I think "Disable Performance Counters" value either "0", or "4", should not matter for browsing our counters with 32bit bit perfmon applicaiton.
Do you see any issues of registry entries. ?
On what basis perfomance monitor list few enabled counters?
How can we add our counters manually to perfomance monitor?
