Is Aperture 3 the new iMovie HD6?

Hello everyone,
I know Aperture has many more strings to its bow, but if you just look at the slideshow aspect, and the interface on screen, it's looks like iMovie 6 to me - which I regard as no bad thing. I feel that iMovie these days is a bit of a dog's dinner at times. Too fussy perhaps.
What does everyone else think?

I do all my Ken Burns still work in Photo to Movie, which I then export into iMovie, so FCE doesn't need to handle stills directly for me - although given its other advanced capabilities perhaps it can.
It certainly can - and rather better. PhotoToMovie is a fine wee app and good at what it does. But think about this: six photos on screen at the same time, each in a frame, with a different pan running on each photo at the same time. You're not doing that with iMovie or PhotoToMovie How about the six frames start to move as well...
I'm not overly concerned about the learning curve - I tend to learn programmes quite quickly if they can deliver something I want.
If you've not used an NLE then it's good to have a look at the tutorials - even things like getting material into the app and onto the time line is different from what you've done before.
I use Photoshop extensively for photo retouching, so I don't think I need Aperture for that - perhaps it's not a programme for me after all?
The differences between Photoshop and Aperture have been dealt with exhaustively on this forum - have a search. But in brief:
They are two different kinds of Apps that can be used together.
Aperture is a Digital Asset Manager, designed to help you manage your photos, do post shoot processing in a completely lossless way, with a firm focus on the Raw shooter.
Photoshop is a pixel editor, with layers and many other excellent tools.
Folks who use Aperture often report that they use Photoshop a lot less, but each app does things that the other app simply isn't designed to do and so they are complimentary to each other, not alternatives to each other.

Is there anyway to take a downloaded app from one computer and put it on another without rebuying it. I have a macbook that I bought the new iMovie and iPhoto on, but I would rather it be on my iMac. So is there anyway I can change it? I thought that if I bought it the apps on my macbook, they would be avaliable on my imac like the mobile devices operate. The macbook has 10.6.8 cause its a older model and I think lion would slow it down. Any help??

Just redownload it on the other computer by logging into the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to purchase it.

  • Problem importing video from a DV camera into the new imovie 10.0?  I have a Sony DCR TRV17 connected via Firewire port that worked in 9.0.9 but not under 10.0...

I have a Sony DCR TRV17 that I used to pass through VCR tape video via Firewire port to my Mac Pro under Imovie 9.0.9 without an issue.   Now under Imovie 10.0 the video shows in the import window, I can start recording yet when I stop recording the recorded clips do not show up anywhere.  The movie file I'm creating still indicates that I still need to import video.   Anyone having similar problems?

    Hey Dave,
I had this issue only once before but was lucky enought to find it was a specific event causing the import to freeze. It took me some time to isolate the problem though. I would recommend letting it sit there for some time before you try any troubleshooting. Larger libraries can take long periods of time to update.
This is a good thread for this issue.  I would first try removing the iMovie.plist as elikness mentions.
    1. Open Finder
    2. Click on "Go" in the menu bar.
    3. Click on Go To Folder on the dropdown menu.
    4. Type "~/Library/Preferences/" in the text field and click Go.
    5. Find the com.apple.iMovie(some number).plist file and move it to Trash.
Quit and relaunch iMovie to see if this took care of the issue before attempting the next step. If you're still having an issue then you can try what I needed to do which is isolating the problem event.
    1. Open Finder.
    2. Go to the Movies folder. You should see iMovie Events here.
If you have a larger event library I'd recommend renaming the iMovie Events folder to say, "iMovie Events COPY". Then create a new empty folder named “iMovie Events”. When you launch iMovie 9.0.9 all events will be missing at this point. Quit iMovie if it is open. Then you can either drag each event from iMovie Events COPY to iMovie Events or you can select and drag several at a time. Each time you drag an event folder back into the new iMovie Events folder launch iMovie 9.0.9 to see if you are having the same issue. Wash and repeat until either you have found the problem event or you have imported all events.
If you find the problem event you can reimport the clip from iMovie 9.0.9 by going to File > Import > Movies and navigating to that events iMovie Original Movies folder to find the clip.
    Hope this helps!

how do i record video on the new iMovie on my mac

    Hey baseballgod44,
Great question! The following article outlines how to record video with the FaceTime HD Camera in iMovie (2013):
iMovie (2013): Record video with the FaceTime HD camera
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14675
Record live video directly into iMovie
    1. Do one of the following:
              - To record using the built-in camera: Click the Import button in the toolbar.
              - To record using an external iSight camera: Connect the iSight camera to your computer with a FireWire cable, and click the Import button in the toolbar.
    2. In the Cameras section of the Import window sidebar, select the camera you want to import from.
A live video image from the camera appears in the Import window.
    3. Do one of the following:
              - To choose an existing event to contain the video: Choose the event from the “Import to” pop-up menu at the top of the Import window.
              - To create a new event to contain the video: Choose New Event from the “Import to” pop-up menu, type a name for the new event, and press Return.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • How do I create a still photo from a video in the new iMovie?

How do I creat a still photo from a video in the new iMovie?

I'll assume you want to create a still to use outside FCPX, not a still frame within FCPX.  It's kinda hidden in the "share."  Go File/Share/Add Destination.  You want "Save Current Frame."  After you've created that destination, it'll be there for you in the future under Share.

  • Is there a tutorial on how to run the new IMovie version 10?

Can someone direct me to video tutorials on how to operate the new IMovie inside Maverick.  As has been the case recently with Apple, this update isn't necessarily user driven.  Help please.

    There's some info in iMove->Help:

  • Is it possible to change the automatically set image on the new iMovie Theater title screen?

I made a few movies on the new iMovies 2013 then uploaded into iTheater. I love the software and its ease of use. However, I noticed iTheater automatically sets the title image. Similar to youtube, iTheater probably uses the video mid point image as default. Is it possible to change the set image on iTheater?

    Unfortunately, no.

  • Can I use iMovie '11 instead of the new iMovie '13?

I really don't like the new iMovie program.  It took me over a year to get used to iMovie '11 which came with my computer and I would rather just stick with that program and not use the new iMovie '13.  Can I do this and if so how?
    Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can do this. You should be able to find the iMovie 11 in a folder within your Applications folder. This folder is called iMovie 9.0.9. You should see the icon for iMovie in this folder. Drag it to your Dock, and you can use it like always.

  • Hate the new iMovie how to I revert to the old version?

loaded movie clips thinking the new iMovie with updates would be better than the pervious version....WRONG!!!  New version is much more difficult to use.  How do I revert to the old version??? HELP!! My job depends on getting this video together my MONDAY!! YIKES!

The install of iMovie 10 doesn't remove the previous iMovie version 9 or any of its files.
Look for it in your HD/Applications folder.

  • How do I migrate my old iMovie video files into the new iMovie software version?

When my computer recently updated to the most recent software version, specifically the new iMovie software, all of my past iMovie files filmed and saved under the previous software became 'unplayable' in the new iMovie version. How do I import and update the old files to make them playable and part of my iMovie library?

You have to upgrade your iMovie 9 projects from iMovie 10 before you can use them.  See:

Are you in your user account?
In the Import window you'll see a Desktop folder at the root level of our drive. You don't want that one.
You want the one in your the folder for your user account.
