Is Apex 4.2 safe to upgrade to for the novice/moderate user?

Hi all,
I see that 4.2 is in production. I'm running 4.1. Is it easy/safe to upgrade to 4.2? My platform is Windows 7 and Oracle 11g xe. I'm no DBA and I prefer to avoid quicksand. Perhaps those of you who have already been down the path can advise me about this.
Thanks,
Kim

Kim,
I've upgraded a number of instances without any issues.
Why not consider using VirtualBox or some other form of VM? This way, you can create a snapshot before upgrading, and if something goes awry, you can easily roll back to just before the upgrade. I use this feature all of the time (as recently as yesterday) with VMWare, as it makes any types of upgrades almost fool-proof, in the sense that you can get back to where you were before easily.
Thanks,
- Scott -

What is the "software upgrade" available for the OS X 10.5.8?

  • Does the QT MPEG2 upgrade allow for the use of m2t files in FCP?

I just noticed the product the Apple store - and since I'm on the way to return a Firestore FS4..... Will this upgrade allow FCP to edit m2t?

Thanks gents - I heard the same rumor today from Focus' technical support - they are waiting for the QT patch to test and issue a firmware upgrade for the Firestore units, but they didn't expect a solution until April. sigh I had hoped the upgrade was new, and this was the software they were waiting for.

  • Upgrade bang for the buck?

With the increasing percentage of time I'm spending on HD projects as well as Motion work, I need to speed up my setup. I'm weighing bang for the buck between investing in my current machine or scrapping it and buying a new machine. My principle issues are:
    1) I need to be able to drive a 32" HD display for my clients in addition to my 20" monitor. Can't afford a broadcast HD monitor so I'm using a consumer display.
    2) Need to improve render times on FCP and Motion
    3) Would like to improve compression time for QT output
If you had $2500 for upgrades or $4000 for a new machine (assuming I can sell this rig for $1500) what would you do? New video card, increase ram, faster disk i/o? New quad processor xeon machine (on the low end of the spectrum)? I'm struggling with whether it's worth putting considerable money into a G5 machine in this Xeon world.
    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Not exactly sure how to tackle this. But the bottom line is: get a new machine! There's a couple ways to view it, I suppose:
    1. Performance: Let's say you spend only the $2,500 on 'upgrades' to the G5. That's (about) 62% of the $4,000 route. Will that G5 perform 62% as well as a new Mac Pro. My guess is: no. The new Mac Pro will so handily spank that G5 that it's not even a contest.
    2. Upgrades: whatever the fastest GFX card you can get into that G5 is a finite element. If you get a Mac Pro you could start with the "stock" card which is probably on par with the best of the G5 candidates. You could then upgrade to an ATI 3870. If you waited a little bit you could upgrade to the ATI 4870. (Not available yet.) Point being: the best options out there for the Mac Pro trounce the G5's options and we haven't even seen the end of the tunnel yet.
    3. Longevity: let's peek into a worst case scenario: You spend $2,500 on 'upgrades' and the G5 poops out. Motherboard meltdown or something that renders it a doorstop. What recourse is there then? If you buy new, you've got a warranty and the ability to extend that as well. I like that peace of mind personally.
    4. Future: Things are only going to grow more and more optimized for Leopard (and beyond) and the Intel platform. The PowerPC is already starting to get phased out. For example, Adobe has said After Effects CS4 will not even run on PowerPC. You can't expect any vendors - even Apple - to continue to focus on PPC when those resources can be put to optimizing the present and future: Intel & Leopard.
Just my 2 cents worth. But if it were me, I'd bust out the buffing cloth, put it to work, and introduce that G5 to some new friends over here.

  • Upgrade logic for the projectmix

I'm using logic pro 7.01 and i was wondering if i should get the upgrade 7.1 because i have a projectmix now and have some really annoying problems with it.
Do you think it will help or is there not that much difference?
    Thanks

You should make the bump up anyways!
not much worth noting in ver.7.2, but 7.1 would at least offer some new plugins that you may get some use out of... even that is worth the cost of upgrading, even if used only once.
.... if you are the same chap that had the PM I|O issue, then you are all set with the hardware issue right?

  • HT4972 upgrading ios for the ipod touch

Does any one have an idea of how to upgrade from iOS 4.2 with my iPod touch. I'm unable to upgrade to any higher version. When I try it ITunes says it's already up to date. I've tried many on line suggestions and I'm so frustrated. I've even manually downloaded iOS 4.2 and tried to "force" the upgrade to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.
    Kris

You don't have a 3 or 4G of the Touch. Earlier versions cannot be upgraded to iOS 5.

  • What happened to the 8800 GT upgrade cards for the first-gen Mac Pro?

I have a first-gen Mac Pro (System Profiler says model identifier is "MacPro2,1" which I think still makes it a first-gen model), and I was considering upgrading to the 8800 GT so I could take advantage of OpenCL, since the 7300 GT I have is not supported, according to Apple's page. ( http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html )
However, I can't seem to find the card anywhere on Apple's store site, or anywhere else, for that matter. Does anyone know what happened? Can I still buy the 8800 GT for my Mac Pro? If not, what OpenCL-compatible card can I upgrade to? Apple only seems to have the ATI X1900 XT in their store.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Have you done it, or know someone that has put it in a 1st gen Mac Pro?
I'm just double checking so I don't waste my time.

  • Some Upgrade Suggestions for the iPhone

I just got 8GB iPhone and am loving it, especially the web browsing capability. My experience would be even better if the iPhone had the following features: 1) a search function equivalent to spotlight in the iMac's (the lack of it seems a major oversight to me - perhaps one reason why business users may not be willing to part with their treo's just yet), 2)ability to tag individual records in calendar or contact list as hidden (this will enhance protection of confidential information beyond - by the way the Treo has that capability too), 3)ability to synch smart groups on the desktop address book. Hopefully Apple will address these issues in upcoming software updates.

Your ideas will not be heard by Apple here. Go to:

  • Recommended Upgrade path for Apex 3.1.1

    Hi Everyone,
just wondering what the recommended upgrade path from Apex 3.1 to 3.1.1 is. Is it just installing the Patch or is there an upgrade option for the full-3.1.1-version?
The reason i'm asking is not everyone has access to metalink and can therefor not download the patch from there but the full version from OTN
    thanks,
    Peter

    Peter,
As with our previous patch sets, we release a full, new install on OTN and only release the patch via MetaLink (it is one of the benefits for customers with database support). You can use the full release to upgrade from 3.0 (or before) to 3.1.1 but to get from 3.1 to 3.1.1 you need either the patch or you need to do a new install.

  • Is it safe to upgrade ipad(1st) to the the OS?

I have the orginial iPad.  Is it safe to upgrade it to the latest IOS?

It worked fine on my iPad original and I have had no problems. Before you update any device with any update, backup the device first just to be safe.

  • What are payment options for the upgrade?

I was wondering if I can buy the 2.0 upgrade for the $9.95 on the iTunes store with a iTunes gift card? Or will I need to use a credit card for it?

    Dragoncqb wrote:
I think is a bunch of bull you have to pay for the update iphone users dont. And before you say it they pay monthly to AT&T not apple.
You really need to do your research on this subject.
I software is free to iPhone users NOT because of the contracts that people have with AT&T.
It is free because Apple decided to account for the iPhone (and Apple TV) differently.
When you pay your $400 for the iPhone they do not recognise the full $400 as a sale.
What they do (and this has been very clearly stated by Apple), is take 1/24 of the $400 each month.
This is not money from AT&T is is the money that was paid for the phone.
Now because in effect Apple are not taking the revenue and profit for the full phone at point of sale and instead only take a % every month the buyer is paying for the phone over the 24 month period.
Therefore Apple can and will give free software updates because in effect the product sold is not complete and can take money as they add features.
This complicated accounting method was caused by the EXON issues and the Sabane Oxley laws that resulted from that case.
If you would like to know more, so that you understand rather than rant, you can read more here in an excellent article that explains it in more detail :-
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/06/25/thehidden_financial_impact_of_applesiphone.html
The iPod touch on the other hand is accounted for like all other products, all revenue / profit taken at time of sale. If Apple gave the software Upgrades (not bug fixes as they are free) away for free they would be breaking the law as it would deprive shareholders of potential revenue that should have been charged for adding features to a product that has been already sold. That is why we ahd to pay for the iMac Airport 'N' drivers as well.
