Is apple care or any extended warranty recomended?

Did anyone purchase an extended warranty on their MBP?
I will be buying a MBP within the upcoming weeks and was wondering if getting an extended warranty was worth the extra money. My current iMac I purchased the apple care and feel that it may have been worth it just because my Disc drive had failed on me 2 months after the standard 1 year warranty had ended. I feel apple products are generally reliable, and the component itself which failed was the Panasonic disc drive which is not manufactured by apple themselves.
I could either buy it at the apple store for the full price of 399.99 CDN or our own extended warranty at my work for half price (I believe around 250 after discount). I know that buying a warranty is a gamble because the MBP may last me years or only 1 month so would paying a few hundred more (which is going over my budget if I do get it) save me the trouble if I need to repair anything after the 1 year manufacturer warranty?

Like any warranty, it's a gamble, or insurance, depending on how you feel about it.
I would say that, generally, any laptop is going to be subjected to more bumps and bounces than a typical desktop computer, therefore there is a higher chance of failure.
That's not to say that AppleCare will cover any and all damage to the system (they won't cover things like broken screens caused by deliberately dropping the laptop off the roof, for example), but you'll find a number of problems that will be covered and, due to the nature of laptops, out-of-pocket repairs can be expensive. Since everything is integrated so even relatively minor problems may involve replacing major components and you can't just swap out, say, the video card or ethernet card.
As a result I'd say that it's worth doing for laptops, but it's your call, of course.

It's not 'our' Apple Care - these forums aren't staffed by Apple. They're user-to-user.

  • Apple Care replaced my dead, out-out-of-warranty Airport Express

Today, I became one of the hundreds (thousands??) of Airport Express users whose AE died just a few months out of warranty. I faithfully purchase Apple Care (3-year extended warranty) from Apple for every Mac I buy.
A few years ago, my graphite Airport died, and the Apple Care rep gladly replaced it due to my active Apple Care contract at that time. Today, I thought I would receive the same courtesy, thanks again to my TWO active Apple Care contracts that were in place well before I purchased the AE.
My initial Apple Care rep denied my request for a replacement AE, because, he argued, the AE was not purchased at the same time with a Mac. I explained to him the graphite Airport story above, and he dug his heels in deeper. I insisted that he send me up the food chain to a superviser, and after 4-5 min on the phone, the supervisor came on, apologized for his tech's mis-interpretation of policy, and authorized the replacement on the spot. He told me that his techs would have this clearly explained to them for future Apple Care contract holders who call up with a dead AE.
Extra info...I live near an Apple Store, and asked if I may go there and pick up the replacement. He said the decision would be up to the store management--if they had stock, etc. I said I wanted to take my chances and go up there, so he instantly made me an appointment with the genius bar within the hour. This Apple Care supervisor was a real pro. He made it clear that Apple Care covers an AE even if the AE is not purchased with a Mac. He also told me he would make a special request within my case report to the store for a stock unit. Bam! I walked in and got hooked up! Apple does take care of its customer (who might need to be a bit more persistant than need be at times) after all.
Good luck should you find yourself in the same boat I was in...By the way, I am posting this via my replacement AE on the same day, and I would swear it produces faster internet speed than the fried one!

    Hi, Steve
that's one of the good points of the forum here: having a lot of trouble the past few weeks with my iMac, and now also with a brandnew minimac, I get back full with hope by reading your post here.
no, i'm not sarcastic. I think you tell us that we can get treated correctly if we insist to be treated correctly. and that is a a helpful advice.

  • Well i have the apple care plan for my iphone and i lost my headphone what do i do to get another pair? Can i still get them for free?

I would greatly appreciate any help with this thank you!

I'm afraid you will have to buy another pair.  Apple Care is an extended warranty, it does not cover Theft, Loss, Damage by user.

  • How can I register Apple care for my iPad if my ipad's warranty is not expire yet?

Apple care for my iPad will be expire in November 14, 2013. I want to extend my iPad's warranty. I already bought Apple Care warranty but when I register online it said I already had a warranty for my iPad. The question is, how can I extend my iPad's warranty?

You can only buy apple care once to extend your original warranty from one year to two. You can't keep reupping it every year if I'm understanding that's what you're trying to do.
After your device is two years old it's out of warranty and not eligible for any warranty from Apple (some retailers sell you up to 3 years of coverage, but you had to get that with the device)

  • Apple sold extended warranty for ipod, will not honor it

Apple sold me an extended warranty for my ipod that was manufactured by HP. I asked several times - are you sure you support this model? They said yes. At the time, it was still under its regular warranty and starting to have problems. I thought I had plenty of time now that I had an extended warranty. But now they won't honor the warranty.
Where has the honor of standing by your word or honoring your mistakes gone? My opinion of apple has gone way down.

Apple will replace the battery for $79. See:

  • Can I still purchase Apple Care for my old iPhone 4?

When I got my iPhone 4 nearly a year ago, I was told that I could purchase Apple Care at any point in the first year to extend the warranty an extra year, etc. I was planning to do that today (I couldn't take the financial hit before it became necessary at the year's end), but I see now that with the iPhone 4S has come AppleCare+, which much be pruchased within 30 days after your phone purchase. As I have an older model, I don't see how this should apply to me—30 days had already come and gone before they came out with this new policy! So, my question is this: How can I purchase the original Apple Care extenstion for my older phone?

You cannot purchase the extended warranty after the end of the standard one year warranty. You might find other companies that offer limited forms of extended warranties such as those offered for used cars.

Iphone4 is dropped in a glass of water. Would it be covered by  apple care?
    Any input is appreciated!
    Thank you

If you purchased the extended repair plan called AppleCare+ when you purchased the phone, it will be covered wth a $49 service fee.  If not, then user damage is not covered.

  • If i accidentally drop and break my macbook pro will apple care fix it ?

    help

NOTE:  Apple Care nor the standard warranty does not cover accidental damage.  You will be responsible for the repair costs (which are usually more than the cost of the computer).
If you have homeowners or rental coverage check w/them.  Most policies cover accidental damage.
If you purchased your computer w/a credit card, check w/them also.  You just may be covered.

  • I have a Iphone 4s and a ipad mini. the ipad mini recently got water damage, tried the rice trick...nothing. I have apple care plus on my iPhone, does that work on my ipad too? if so that would be great bc  defintally can't afford a new one ,lol

    Welcome to the boards.
First, what kind of liquid was it, and was it fully submersed?  For how long?  Do you see water droplets or moisture behind the screen?  How long did you leave it in rice for?  Etc.  More data please.
And the short answer is no, apple care does not extend from your iPhone to your iPad mini.  Both items require separate Apple Care plans to be covered.  Furthermore, I don't think water damage is covered under Apple Care.  Only manufacturing defects.
If you bought it on a Credit Card, you may be lucky enough to call them and ask them if they have a replacement program as a benefit for being a card holder.  I believe AMEX has one on their Platinum cards, and worse case scenario, you can always try to file a claim with your home insurance or renters insurance  (check your policy).  Just beware, if you go the Insurance route in filing a claim, you might have your premium go up in the next cycle.
    It's a double edged sword, I'm sorry.

  • What will happen to the apple care of iphone 5

  • Can I purchase an Apple Care extended warranty for an iPad Air if I purchase it at Best Buy?

CAn I buy an Apple Care extended warranty for an iPad Air if I purchase it at Best Buy?

For me? Buying from best buy was my only option since the closest apple store is over an hour away. (and technically in another state)
Also, when I bought my iPod the warranty that Best Buy offered was far more comprehensive than Apple Care with accidental damage protection for up to 3 years.
And, when my iPad's charging port messed up, I took it into Best Buy and they swapped me out for a new one while at an Apple store I likely would have gotten a refurb.
When I swapped out my iPod 4 for my iPod 5 I took it into best buy, got $70 towards the purchase of the new device by trading in the old one.
Best Buy isn't perfect and not every store is a good one, but they are a good alternative or other option to explore for those buying devices.
I think my biggest beef when buying my iPad and later iPod at Best Buy is when I bought my iPad I bought the screen protector and they wanted to charge me to apply it...and it kinda rankled for me to be plunking down over $600 dollars to have them want to charge me $15 for a screen protector install.
