Is Apple Killing Logic?

I read a distressing post yesterday.
http://news.idg.no/cw/art.cfm?id=CA3A7E65-E1A7-BC15-3875B14A3D1731C2
We haven't seen a new version of Logic since 2009, and since then, Sonar & Cubase & ProTools have had 3 or 4 upgrades each. If Apple is ditching their focus on professional users, as demonstrated by the lack of a Mac Pro running the latest generation of Xeon processor, then music professionals need to know sooner rather than later, so we can plan our migration path. The most current Mac Pro release uses a chip from 2010, and an older model video card as well.
Since Apple dumped SoundDiver without explanation, I've been without one of my most important tools; it still works on XP (Thanks, Emagic) but is broken due to the 10.6/10.7 elimination of PowerPC code & Rosetta emulation.
Deleting this post won't solve anything, Apple geniuses. You must address your userbase of professional users sooner rather than later. After the disaster that was Final Cut Pro X (removing vital features for video nerds), we've been tense.

Seems to me the latest versions of OSX are doing a pretty good job of killing off Logic.
Anyway, you won't get an answer from Apple here or anyplace else, you, I and the general public are not on the need-to-know list.
Personally, I doubt Logic's demise... I think they're had the Logic engineers working on other projects, like audio for FCPX, Garageband has been updated...etc. Logic's code is massive and contains some obstacles to further development, I think we'll see a rewrite rather than more stuff tacked on to Logic's edges. While they will try to make it as compatible as possible, I don't think it will be the same old Logic that everyone is used to. There may be incremental updates before then but those are just to keep up with OS updates.

  • Sanbox 5600 & Apple LSI logic problems

    Hello
I have a MAC and Raids connected through a Sanbox 5600 and the Raid keeps un-mounting (dropping off) a few seconds into use.
    My set up:
    Dual G5 MAC with
-Apple LSI Logic, 4Gb Fibre card
-Finisar PB FTLF 8524 P2 BNL transceivers
    Q-Logic Sanbox 5600 16 port activated switch (firmware 5.0.1.10)
Two EonStore Raids, each wih 2x 4Gb fibre connections and striped into one Raid.
So, the Raids are connected through to the Sanbox 5600 with Finisars (as above). They occupy ports 0,1,2,3
The Mac sits in ports 4,5
The Raids are set as Targets
Mac set as initiator with Device scan off and Stream Guard on.
When I boot up, the Raid appears beautifully, it works for 15 seconds or thereabouts and then she drops off. I assume some miscreant LIP is upsetting the Mac.
When I use an ATTO card all is fine, when I use Apple’s LSI, all is bad. And of course, there is little way of adjusting the blighter and even trying to update drivers.
Any top settings or any help out there for me?
    Many thanks in advance.

Use the fibre channel utility and force the LSI into point to point if it isn't already. (Point to point or N-Port instead of Loop or NL-port) I'd do the same for the storage as well.

  • Apple says "logic board needs replaced" because MBP won't turn on w/o SMC reset but I think I can fix it; can you help?

    Hello,
Less than a year after purchasing a brand new, early-2011 Macbook Pro (still covered under Extended Apple Care) and, sadly, only a week or two after finally upgrading to 8GB RAM, I returned to my notebook after taking a shower and watched it suddenly shut itself down. It has not been responsive to the power button since then (although, see below.. I think I can fix it).
Genius Bar took one look at the visible moisture sensor you can see underneath where the RAM sits and declared it water-damaged. While I agree that either a short and/or corrosion is causing my MBP to malfunction, I don't believe it should void my warranty because the problem isn't that I spilled something on it.1
I hope someone can give me some insight into fixing this myself. Apple says "the Logic Board needs replaced" (a common CS response, I've noticed) the water damage voids my Extended Care + that it'll be at least $1200 and several weeks. Here's the situation:
MBP will not turn on just by pressing the power button. However, MBP consistently (every time) powers up when I do an SMC reset.
I have it in verbose mode and it begins booting. But, it will invariably turn off without warning anywhere between 30 seconds and 8-10 minutes after powering up.

I have it in verbose mode and it begins booting. But, it will invariably turn off without warning anywhere between 30 seconds and 5 minutes of powering up.
Eighty percent of the time, it turns off during the pre-Xorg boot. However, I have also seen it fully boot, I log in, I'm able to peruse logfiles/etc. Safe Mode (holding shift) crashes early. Single-user mode makes no difference. PRAM/NVRAM/etc makes no difference. I can boot to the Recovery Partition but it turns off just the same (disk utility scan takes too long).
I haven't been able to really test the Internet Recovery because the hotel wireless takes too long. I did boot into Hardware Test and it passed the basic and extended tests (although it seemed to just be testing the RAM integrity.
I can boot from the optical drive with a FreeBSD 9 livecd and an Ubuntu 11.04 livecd. Of note is that the laptop shuts off consistently when FreeBSD begins the journaling services for the ZFS filesystem (every time).
Here is where this leads me to believe I'm at (I am not dogmatic here and would appreciate any corrections or insight):
It seems like there may be corrosive damage on the logic board but maybe it's isolated given the various consistencies in what's happening. It seems like whenever SATA is use, I lose power. When SATA isn't really used (the HW Test), the laptop has literally stayed on for days and days.
I want to get in there and clean up any corrosion with 91% isopropyl alcohol (9% distilled, non-conductive water).
I want to use a bootable OSX livecd with an "emergency console" so I can, basically, use boot options to step throught the boot process and see if I can isolate the problem.
Here is what I'm uncertain about and could use guidance:
Does any of this sound remotely reasonable to anyone who has been through this or am I delusional?
Any tips on identifying and cleaning any corrosion?
While I had made a bootable version of Lion via Disk Utility and a rescue disk with some third-party app, they are MIA and I don't have another Mac at the moment. Do I have any other options? Again, an install dvd is not exactly what I want -- more like a rescue dvd. I had read about some Apple Stores giving/copying bootable USB thumb drives like this to customers. But, I noticed that this is now on sale there for $80. I would use this like once and, ideally, could use my MBP to make more. $80 seems a bit much.
I should be able to step through the boot process in a way like what's possible with FreeBSD, no?
Anyone have any other specific troubleshooting tips?
I really, reallly need my MBP back as soon as possible. I'd really appreciate any wisdom and insight! Thank you,
    -ryan
To be totally honest, about 3 weeks prior I spilled some milk from cereal on the desk and a little bit got onto the battery. However, the notebook worked fine for the following weeks. I believe that the problems have been caused by ambient humidity ... I've been staying in a hotel that steams up the entire room when I take a shower. The windows are covered in water droplets so why wouldnt the MBP be affected? As noted, these problems began after I lingered in a hot shower.

    I don't think you have a case.
You can replace the logic board yourself if you are a DIY'er and save some money.

  • Has Apple killed the original Apple TV?

We have three original Apple TVs, and one Apple TV 2. All used to be fine but in the last 6 months or so the old ones have become increasingly useless... Every time I try to use one of them, the "connected" computer is greyed out and therefore inaccessible. If you disconnect and reconnect it is still greyed out. This means that you can not see Shared content on them.
We are running on the latest versions of Apple TV software and iTunes on all Mac kit.
I've seen various similar threads on here but none of the suggested solutions have worked. I am getting very fed up with this situation because I used to use Apple TVs to stream iTunes purchased content all around the house which I now cannot do.
We are even having issues with the ATV2... I have homesharing turned on in iTunes, I have connected via Homesgaring on the ATV2 and yet I still don't see the relevant content on the ATV2. All it says is turn homesharing on.... really helpful!!!
Please can someone give me a definitive answer on this? If Apple want to kill off all ATV1 kit, then just tell me and I'll disconnect the lot!!

Mine are set to both syncing some content and streaming other. No issues other than occasionally restarting iTunes.
I did have issues years ago with a D-Link router but since updating to an Apple Time Capsule my network has been rock solid. You shouldn't have to use an Apple router but if your router has some age to it, it wouldn't hurt to update to an 802.11n 5Ghz dual band model. The ATVs work better on the 5Ghz band with the computer and a dual band router can also use a 2.4Ghz for older devices.
I suspect wifi interference on the 2.4Ghz band messes up ATVs. Just an intermitting loss of signal can cause the link to iTunes to be cut as well.

  • What is Apple's logic behind this?

I open a file (any kind will do) and make some changes. After I'm done, I hit CMD + W to close the file and the program correctly asks if I want to save my changes, close without saving, or cancel closing the file. The Save button is highlighted on the button and outside the button. If I hit the tab button, the outside highlight moves to the different buttons, but the button highlight remains on the Save option, so when I hit enter, it thinks I'm saying to Save.
Can anyone explain the logic behind this? I just don't get why Apple thinks this is an efficient/right way to do things. Thanks for any helpful answers.

    Hi--
To actually select the button that has focus (the outside highlight), hit the space bar.
I suspect the rationale is something like this: they don't want to override the usual functionality of the buttons, but just offer a second or third way to select buttons.
Many, if not most apps, particularly in the situation you describe, already have pretty solid keyboard shortcuts for the three buttons. Of course, "enter" for "Save", "esc" for "Cancel", and "command"-"d" almost always works for "Don't Save". From observation, of those people who use keyboard shortcuts in dialogs, this is by far the most common way they do it. I don't think I've ever seen anyone use the tab key in dialog boxes (and I think it's off by default except for navigating between text boxes).

  • Apple kills Aperture

Apple just killed Aperture program and put Aperture program development on life support. And has asked for Adobe help in transitioning Aperture user to Adobe Lightroom. So if people here see a flood of Aperture users you'll know why.

  • Connecting and syncing PC's to Apple and Logic

I have PC's with sample libraries on which I want to connect through my Apple G5 to access in Logic. I will be using Kontakt as my sampler player on the PC's. How do I get my Apple to link with the PC's, and how do I get the machines to sync all together. I have seen that other users set up the PC's to link with their Mac's and that they are able to connect to their PC's through Multi-instruments that are set up in Logic. Just not too sure how it is all done and achieved.

    In Marty's scenario...
    Keyboard---->Logic--->Unitor--->Hammerfall--->PC/Sampler Instruments
          A                  B               C                  D                         E
In this scenario, playing a single note on the keyboard...
    A to B = 1 ms. (approx. length of MIDI note-on message)
B to C = 1 ms.?? (MIDI going "thru" Logic is can be generally considered instantaneous, though let's say the worst case scenario would be 1 ms)
C to D = 1 ms. (same as above, approx. length of MIDI note on-message)
D to E = 1.5 - 3ms or more ?? (depends on the latency setting required for the PC)
Using the numbers from above, minimum latency from note-on to sound generation from the PC would be approx 3.5 to 7.5+ milliseconds.
PPC Quad G5, 6G RAM, LP7.1.1   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Now wipe that smirk off your bill, duckboy!

  • Kontakt 4 - Does it get around Apple's Logic RAM limitations?

I've read on another board that the new version of Kontakt (4) might be able to get around the 4GB RAM limitation Apple currently have operating in Logic. Is anyone using Kontakt 4 and can they confirm this? If so, what are the results of a like for like test comparing between between Kontakt 3.5 and 4?

    christianobermaier wrote:
32bit applications can not address more than 4Gb RAM, plain and simple.
EXS does spawn separate processes with their own memory allocation so Logic's is not affected by that. Konatkt can do this too. To sort out Play so it can do it as well is EastWest's business I'd say.
While I'd love to see EW improve how PLAY works (and it sounds like they are trying), I'd also like to see Apple try and optimize Logic as well. While a 32 bit Logic can't use more than 4 gigs in theory, in real life use it's far less than that, and many users have found that the ceiling is even lower (and is reached even faster) with L9 than L8.
Also, a 64 bit version of Logic would overcome the limitation as well.

  • Old macbook RSS, will apple replace logic board and heat.

Will apple replace my logic board if I experience random shutdown? and if will replace it, it will be the board with duo core 2 on it? because I have the old macbook.

When I got mine replaced for RSS, I had to prove it. This was in early July, when it was a relatively new problem. I also convinced them to replace it rather than take it in for repair, but that's extremely unusual.
I've read posts on these message boards that since early September, some stores will just take it from your hands and start on the "new heatsink" paperwork as soon as you say "random shutdown." But that's not a guarantee that it will happen.
There as also a way to make RSS happen, but it didn't work for everybody. Search in the discussions for "yes > /dev/null". If that procedure works for you and shuts down your MacBook, then you can also do it in the store.

  • What Number do i call to contact apple for logic pro 9 refund?

So my question is... what phone # do i call to contact the apple support that deals with refunds??

  • User Improvements, Suggestions to Apple for Logic

It would be nice if the automation settings were less a pina. You have to zoom in to full resolution to adjust the setting value to 10.6 vs 10.7.
When using samples from a non apple source, for example the browser, Logic copies the sample to the bin. If you delete the sample from the song, it keeps the copied sample in the bin; it should delete it if not modified. Also Logic will copy the sample multiple times for different tracks, even if it is the same sample file, which is not necessary.

While holding the mouse button, use ctrl+opt to enable fine control.  If fine control was always on it would take forever to make large adjustments.

  • Why is Apple killing the Gallery and iWeb?

The loss of iWeb, iDisk and the Gallery is major. The Gallery is beautiful and functional. You have discretion with sharing your photos and videos. There is nothing like it. When it and the other functions are taken away next June when MobileMe disappears, I'll get nothing out of iCloud, as I do not have dozens of devices that need to be synced.   What is/was great about the MobileMe photo galleries is that you could just send a link for friends to click on to see your photos. Viewers did not have sign in to a site, or provide their email addresses in order to view your photos — as has been my experience when others have sent me to Picasa or Flickr to see their pix. Why did Apple have to remove the galleries feature in order to advance iCloud? Was there a technological reason, or just someone arbitrarily deciding that "no one wants this anymore"? Same query about iWeb. I'm generally a big Apple fan, but upgrades/updates that remove useful and appreciated features —  that were unique to Apple — make me cranky.

The reason is they try to make difficoult a sync with phones different from iPhone.
Well: I have an iPhone but if I go to the beach in sommer  I prefer to carry a very small and simple Samsung. And have it synced !!!
They do not understand that even if you drive a Ferrari it is sometime a pleasure to drive a Fiat500 or a Smart.

  • Will Apple kill apps allowing unauthorized access to address book?

There are many stories discussing how easy it is for apps to access and copy address book contents without ANY prior authorization.
    One such story: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/igeneration/ios-apps-massive-invasion-of-user-privacy/ 15138
So, what is Apple going to to about this?  This is a TREMENDOUS security failure from which ANY app could utilize.

  • Why has Apple killed off iTunes Match on OS X 10.5.8

Take a look at the enclosed screenshot.
As you can see, 25 days ago I was happily enjoying my 6,000+ tracks in iTunes Match.  When I configured this some time ago, the minimum iTunes Match requirements stated online  by Apple were PowerBook G4, 1 GHz, iTunes 10.6.3, and OS X 10.5.8.
Sometime in the last several weeks, Apple has broken this, either by design or by accident.  I also see that now they have revised the online requirements page to now call for OS X 10.6.8. I have spent days trying to troubleshoot this.  From what I have tested, iTunes Match can review local music, send it to ITM, carry out the ITM processing, and then indicates it is downloading the tracks list to the PowerBook.  Thing is, all of the 6,000+ tracks in my ITM library have vanished.  (They're still out there, because i can access them through iOS.)
What kind of a way to run a railroad is this?  Sneak in changes and see if any one squeals?  This is really frustrating.
    Can anyone help?
