Is artist grid view still MIA in 11.0.4?

I've been debating whether to finally give in and update iTunes (I'm still on 10.7), but I hadn't heard/seen anyone mention if it was back or not in the newest version.

The grid view for artists is gone in iTunes 11. It's a list now, with album art to the left. The Album view is still a grid. If you like the grid view for your artists, stay with iTunes 10.7. iTunes 10.7 is no more or less secure than iTunes 11.

  • Is artist grid view still in iTunes 11?

I'm still running 10.7. I use iTunes on my Mac Mini mostly for playing all 70 gigs of music randomly/shuffle. I keep the view set to grid > artist and the slider fairly small.  I'm happy with everything the way it is but I want to keep the system updated if needed. As you can see this is how 10.7 is set;  grid > artist view, music is shuffling.
    SO;
Can I still shuffle play entire library as I do now in 10.7?
Is the artist grid view still available in 11, is it the same as 10.7 ?  ie; click on view > check grid > select artist in the middle of the player (10.7)
If artist grid view is not available by default, does anyone know of a shortcut to restore it?
If I decide to NOT install 11, is 10.7 inherently insecure?  ie; the thinking on this question is as a newer version of an app/program comes out the old version is not as secure as it could be. Any thoughts?
    Thanks

  • Compilations Artists Grid View

Hello, I have several songs that I've marked with the "Part of a Compilation" option. However, if I only have one song from an artist and said song is part of a compilation, it won't show up on the Grid View under that artist; it will end up at the bottom grouped with all the other compilations. Is there any way that these songs can be sorted under their artist and still be part of a compilation? I would really appreciate any advice, this is something that I find really annoying. Thank you in advance.

I don't think there is anything to be done. I've tired turning off the option under View > Column Browser to Group Compilations but iTunes lists the same number of Arists in Grid mode as it did before. In the Column Browser however the number of artists listed has more than doubled. I suspect the Grid lists only those artists with at least one non-compilation track, with the remaing artists only listed under their respective Album Artist.
See Grouping tracks into albums for general advice.

  • Artist Grid View iTunes 11?

    Yes
I'd like to take this moment to laugh at the patheticly designed artist view in itunes 11! Seriously, I though apple made good interfaces? Is that not what they are known for? Wait, I get it! You had a microsoft designer design the Artist View? Am I right? Thats the only thing that makes sense to me....for this absolete pile of fecal matter your have replaced the beautiful artist gridview with!

I hate how it is now, espeically having as many artists as I have. I loved the grid view, and I dislike how the track numbers now go left to right.

I would love for the Grid View to come back... It's much better with it. I might have to try to downgrade to 10 again.

  • Will Apple restore Artist Grid view in iTunes 11?

There are thousands of people asking the very same thing. It's extremely easy for Apple to add this view again!

Looks like they removed that option
I was a little worried they would actually, I have no idea why they sometimes remove cool features on updates.
Keep your eye out, someone will probably find a way to hack it back to grey.

  • Problem sorting by Artist in grid view using Itunes 8

I have a lot of albums that contain various artist and i set up the info in each with the correct artist name and "various artist" as the album artist. In itunes 8 when i use grid view and use show by artist it displays by album artist putting all the albums by "various artist" in one grid. It's correct in list and cover flow view. How can i set the grid view to display by the artist of the song and not the album. (ex. Soundtrack from the motion picture Tropic Thunder: Display "U Can't Touch This" under MC Hammer instead of Various Artist)

Actually, the grid view should be using the Album Artist tag. When the Album Artist tag was added in iTunes 7.0, the intent was to allow users to properly tag songs based on the artist and any guest artists. For instance, on Luther Vandross’ album +Give Me The Reason+ Track 6, “There’s Nothing Better Than Love” is a duet. Therefore, while the Artist tag for the rest of the tracks should be ‘Luther Vandross’, the correct tag content for Track 6 is ‘Luther Vandross duet with Greory Hines’. Without having ‘Luther Vandross’ in all the Album Artist tags for all 9 album tracks, iTunes would split the album as if there are two albums of the same name by different artists.
The other situation are producer-driven albums like Quincy Jones’ +The Dude+ or +Back On The Block+ . These are not compilations, as you described, because the songs were produced for the albums and Quincy Jones, although not a performer on any of the tracks, is the album artist. The exception is soundtracks that are compilations of songs typically produced for a given film. Like the situation you describe, each track has a different artist, so by having ‘Quincy Jones’ in the Album Artist tag for each track, iTunes maintains the integrity of the album and keeps the tracks properly grouped.
(Now if Apple would only acknowledge and fix the persistent bug that does not carry these grouping and sorting features over to the user’s music folder when they have enabled “Keep iTunes Music folder organized” in iTunes’ preferences.)
The situation you are specifically referencing is that of tagging compilations—albums that consist of tracks by various artists where there is no actual album artist—but you have used the Album Artist tag effectively forcing iTunes to see them as single artist albums. I also tag compilations—e.g., Various Artists (Hip Hop), Various Artists (Jazz), Various Artists (R&B), Various Artists (Soundtrack), etc.—, so I understand what you have done. Unfortunately, the fix for forcing the grid view to recognize individual artists in compilations may require you to clear out the Album Artist tag on all of your compilation album tracks forcing iTunes to revert to the Artist tag in place of the Album Artist tag.
What I would suggest is clearing the Album Artist tag of just one compilation and seeing what happens. If the album appears under “Unknown Artist”, or some other generic listing, in the grid view then iTunes only recognizes the Album Artist tag and I am at a loss as to what you could do. If it works as you hope, then you can go ahead an clear out the Album Artist field on the rest of your compilation albums.
The downside of clearing the Album Artist field is that iTunes will revert to its pre-version 7 habits and break up the albums; that is, a compilation with 12 tracks by 12 different artists will appear in the various views as 12 different albums albeit with the same name and cover art. To keep the tracks properly grouped in other views, you will need to mark all of the tracks from the compilation albums as “Part of a compilation” in the info dialog.

The dark bar is caused by the option "Show metadata below image".
Check the settings for the metadata overlays in Grid view (basic and expanded) by clicking the little "badge" icon below the Browser and selecting "Edit". Is the filename still enabled in the list? And in a high enough position to have precedence for other metadata tags, if the space does not suffice to show all selected tags?

  • Grid View artist names are entirely lower case

    Hi,
in my grid view the artist names have changed to entirely lowercase, i.e "adele", yet on all the tracks Artist & Volume Artist shows as "Adele" any idea why this suddenly changed? and more importantly how I can change it back?
I've tried resetting the Artists and Volume Artist tags but this hasn't helped.
    Thanks
    Mark.

It does not bother me, it was something that I just noticed while looking over the Grid View to answer someone else’s questions.

  • ITunes 10's "grid view" displays my songs out of order.

I really enjoy the "grid view" option on iTunes 10. However, I have noticed it has displayed a few of my albums in the incorrect order. I have checked the tags, and they are all set to the same artist, album, album artist, genre, album artwork, amount of tracks, and amount of discs. They have all been numbered correctly from 1 to x. Some tracks (i.e. 5, 9, 13) are displayed in order at the top and the other tracks are below them in order as well. I do not have this problem in any other view format. I would like to troubleshoot this so that I can go on enjoying grid without this annoying glitch.

I am finding the same problem.
The tracks display in the correct order in List view, but not in Grid or Artist List view. They play in the correct order no matter what view is being used, just display wrong.
For example: In the image below, they will still play in order, so if I play the "first" one (#10), it will continue on to play 11-18 in order, it is just the view that is in error.
The solution that seemed to work for me was to force track numbers by adding them to the track number field and sorting on that. So the problem may be disc rips and other media not from iTunes or Amazon may not necessarily have proper track numbers.
Now if that were the only bug I keep running in to.

  • ITunes 9 Grid view header disabled by default

Ok, the subject is pretty clear. In Grid view the so-called header - the pane on top where the Albums-Artists-Genres-Composers buttons are, and also the scroll box is - is disabled in default view for every playlist, including main library. One needs to turn it on for each playlist manually. Or maybe I just don't know something?

    THANK YOU!
I was having the same issue. I have always used the top columns (in descending order to reduce my options) to sort through my library and was desperately searching for column view controls. I was already considering reinstalling the old Itunes.
In Itunes 8 I remember that the column view was turned off and on with Ctrl + B. That still works but I hadnt figured out how to control it untill I found your post.
    Lots of thanks.

  • Why does iTunes grid view not remember default sort settings?

    Hello,
I am using iTunes 8.1 and I like to use the Grid view (Artists). Using the Grid view and clicking on an artist to look at the albums, I like to sort the albums within using "Album by Year".
Once I have made this change, it sticks until I close iTunes, so I can go into any other artist from Grid view and the albums will be listed using "Album by Year" automatically.
When I restart iTunes and click on an artist in grid view, iTunes has reverted to sorting via the first column, the one with track numbers. I then have to manually click "Album by Year" to get it sorted again.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if there is a solution to it? This also happened in iTunes before I upgraded to 8.1.
    Thanks

Unfortunately, I can't offer any solution because I'm experiencing the same kind of trouble. Please help us! It would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,

  • Slow-to-load album covers in Grid View

I've encountered a problem for a while that I thought I might bring up...
Whenever I start iTunes, it defaults to Grid View, the only view I use when browsing iTunes. Now, I'm unsure if iTunes caches album art or not, but every time I boot it up and scroll down, all of my albums appear artless for half a second before slowly applying the album art. This makes scrolling down incredibly slow and clunky.
Once I fully scroll down, I can scroll smoothly all I want, but if I close iTunes, everything is clunky again. Any tips? Does iTunes not cache album art?

iTunes will need to load all of your artwork when using cover flow and grid view. There IS a cache folder in the Album Artwork folder of iTunes, but i don't know how effective that is.
However, if you are running a version earlier than 9.2, iTunes 9.2 runs cover flow and grid view A LOT faster than previous versions, since what it does is create thumbnail versions of your images for those views only, making those views operate a heck of a lot quicker.
I know 9.2 still has some bugs and some people may advise against it, but if you really want to see a boost of performance with grid view I'd recommend updating if you haven't already. Besides, for any bugs there, Apple will probably release fixes for them shortly.

  • How can I compare two collections at the same time? (View two grid views)

I have two collections containing some of the same images. (My Nikon D70 did not put an end-of-file on some images. I recovered them into a different collection.) Now I want to display both collections side-by-side in grid view. I will select those images in the "recovered" collection that correspond to the bad images in the "main" collection, add the ratings etc, and move just these to another collection.
It is extremely frustrating to have to bounce back and forth between collections, remembering each image one by one and selecting it in the "recovered" collection. (The image names are not preserved in the "recovered" collection -- I have to go by what the image looks like.)
LightRoom allows me to compare photos in the compare view. I want to compare collections in two grid views.

    CaptureTheLight,
you have ran into a situation when you have to compare two sets of images and now you're wondering how come Lightroom doesn't have such "obviously necessary" functionality? But you have to admit it, this is not such a common situation in a photographer's workflow recovers broken files and tries to compare them against themselves. I think it's a pretty specific feature you need. Still, Lightroom has enough powerful tools for editing and sorting images.
    For example...
You could just put them all - "main" and "recovered" - into a single collection or into the Quick Collection. Label the entire "recovered" collection with, say, red and sort by capture time. Now you'll have everything side by side, ordered chronologically. The "recovered" images will stay next to the "main" images since their capture time will be the same, and they will also stand out since they have the red label.
Make the thumbnails bigger and set up the grid view so it tints the thumbnail cell are tinted with the label color. Now, you can go quickly through them visually checking labeled vs unlabeled.

  • Playing a playlist with multiple albums in Grid View in iTunes 8

    Hi All,
Here is a situation I came across, that was quite unexpected compared to the behaviour in iTunes 7.
Suppose I have a playlist with multiple artists/albums. I have this playlist in Grid View. I choose this playlist from the left side navigation tree and press the play button. This playlist is set to shuffle by songs. I expect it to play a song and jump to the next song. iTunes 8 would just keep playing the same songs in the first album listed in the Grid View and would not jump to any other.
    http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/4726/itunes20080910191124oh2.jpg
In this screenshot above, it will keep the songs in "The Very Best Of". If I press Ctrl+L (show now playing) then it would show only the songs in this album. This quite explains why it doesn't play other songs.
To explain a bit more on what's happening:
If I go to List View the song now playing does not have the Now Playing icon:
    http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1113/itunes20080910191500vf3.jpg
Notice it is playing "Opa Opa" but in the List View, it doesn't show it.
This is because in Grid View if you play a song from the playlist, it has its own "virtual playlist"
    http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/5269/itunes20080910191525wl1.png
Notice the now playing icon there.
    Why is this the case?
I hope you guys understood what I was trying to explain.

turingtest2: I had already done exactly what you described in the *"Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist"* section of your article. But what I hadn't done was the advice you gave as the last sentence in this section...*"In addition if you change the Compilation status of tracks they may be temporarily treated as tracks from an Unknown Album, again things should resolve themselves if you close and reopen iTunes".* As soon as I closed and restarted iTunes, the Unknown Album with five tracks disappeared and the tracks were again displayed with the correct album.
Your article is a great read, even for people who understand iTunes...there is a lot of helpful advice there to have bookmarked just in case any of the other problems you address are ever encountered. Thanks for taking the time to compile it and share it iTunes users.
