Is auto-bw recommended in MPLS TE environment?

Hi Sir,
Is automatic bandwidth adjustment recommended in MPLS TE environment? The configuration of a primary TE tunnel is as follows:
interface Tunnel1
load-interval 30
tunnel mpls traffic-eng auto-bw
Thank you.
B.Rgds,
Lim TS

It depends on your requirement. And how important is the primary path BW for you.
As the traffic already using the backup path as primary may be depleted of BW.
Since these are all knobs or features, there is nothing like only this or that is recommended. you will need to study and baseine your BW requirements and then go ahead with unlimited, auto or fixed.

  • Routing Protocol recommendation for MPLS Network

    I am in the process of building a 14 site MPLS network for voice and data traffic. The vendor installing the network has configured RIPv2 as the routing protocol. I am considering switching this over to EIGRP. Can anyone explain to me why this would be better or should I just stay with RIP.
    Thanks

    Hi Chip,
    Its not very clear whether you are implementing a MPLS network or implementing a Network over MPLS for an end user with 14 sites.
    1) If MPLS network then other IGP variants than OSPF and ISIS best avoided. Now if the choice is between ISIS and OSPF then my personal recommendation would be OSPF. And this decision is purely driven by Operational Considerations rather than any technical advantages. Since at the end of the day what matters is how easy it is to implement add delete or troubleshoot the network.
    2)If for End User then it would not be right to recommend EIGRP or RIP or OSPF without knowing the current size & topology of each of these 14 sites, as well as the desired expansion plans. But if these 14 sites are the only sites and are all standalone branch sites connecting over MPLS VPN then RIP,EIGRP or OSPF can be implemented as per your and customer comfort.

    Media Manager (available from the File menu bar item) will consolidate all elements of your project together with a linked copy of the project file to a single folder in a location of your choice. There are various options to leave out unused footage, include handles etc. Safest way is to copy the files. Delete the originals when you are sure the copy works.

  • Tape Auto-loader Recommendations

    I have an Xserve RAID that has grown to about 1 TB of data. Currently I am backing up to single SDLT drive. A full back up, which I do weekly, takes about 4 or 5 tapes. I'm thinking it is time for an auto-loader (tape library). I'm looking at the Exabyte VXA-320 PacketLoader mostly because of its $2,300 price tag.
    Has anyone had any experience with this device? Are there any other devices that I should be looking at?
    Thanks

    I'm a little surprised at the media costs of SDLT vs.
    VXA, although I've not spent much time looking at VXA
    so you're undoubtedly correct.
    I was looking at the media prices for SDLT 600 ($100) vs VXA ($60). Currently, we use SDLT 320. I was enticed by the SDLT 600's backwards read compatibly. But the SDLT 600 has the highest tape cost.
    I think I'm going have to flip a coin to choose between the LTO-2 and LTO-3. The LTO-3 tapes cost twice as much as the LTO-2. However the LTO-3's hold twice as much as the LTO-2's, so the tape cost is a wash. The LTO-3 drive is $1000 more than the LTO-2.

  • Recommend me a desktop environment, please ;)

    Hi! I just installed xorg and it looks like it is set up. Now I have to choose a desktop environment. I'd like something simple (and small in terms of download), yet offering great amount of functionality. What could it be?

    When I started using Linux in 2002, there wasn't the plethora of window managers available as they are now. I used to use GNOME 2 in those days (not even HAL was there!); then I used KDE for sometime too.
    After I discovered Arch, I moved through many DEs and WMs.... XFCE, Gnome, KDEmod, openbox, fluxbox, ion3, wmii, dwm and finally xmonad. I find tiling window managers really easy on me as I tend to have many windows open at some time; and though openbox is really cool (it has one of the best theme collections), with 10 windows open, manually managing them becomes a chore. With the tiling WMs, I can concentrate on my work, rather than moving windows around all day.
    If you stick with XFCE, I suggest you try out Compiz; it has a nice feature which shows you all the windows at once.

  • Recommended Requirements for Development Environment

    Hello,
    what are recomended requirements for development enviroment for WebCenter. We intend to have JDeveloper and WebLogic server with WebCenter on our developer machines and we are wondering wht would be appripriate hardwer to run all of this smoothly.
    For JDeveloper with the WebCenter extension, 2GB RAM should suffice and WL with WebCenter requires somewhere between 3-4GB. Do you think we really need 6-8GB RAM for developers? What processor power would you recomend?
    Thank you for your answers,
    Martin

    6-8 GB ram is overkill.
    I can do the development quiet easy on a 4GB machine.
    When i take a look at the memory usage of jdev and the integrated WLS they both sum up to 1.5 to 2GB.
    if you however are planning on running a standalone WLS instead of the integrated WLS than you need somewhat more memory. Are you going to develop for webcenter spaces? If so, does every developer need a WLS with webcenter spaces installed? If so, 8GB ram is not overkill!
    So conclusion:
    A modern processor. One of the latest core2duo or i5,i7 processors.
    4GB ram when you use jdev + webcenter extension and run integrated WLS
    6GB ram when you use jdev + webcenter extension + integrated WLS + standalone WLS
    8GB ram if developers need their own instance of webcenter spaces.
    I also think 64 bit OS realy helps a lot for this...
    Currently i am working on a following machine (laptop)
    core2duo P8600 @2.4 Ghz
    3GB ram (win xp 32 bit)
    on this machine i use jdev + webcenter extension and integrated WLS. I can develop quiet easy but i have to restart jdev and the IWLS quiet often.
    At my own laptop at home i have following setup:
    core2duo P9400 @2.53ghz
    4GB ram
    jdev + wc extension + IWLS runs very good. Deploying goes faster, testing goes faster,...
    I tried running webcenter spaces on that machine and i could wait ten minutes before a page loads. Realy not productive.
    I need to do some development on webcenter spaces and my new laptop is currently in order:
    i7 720q @ 1.7ghz
    8GB ram
    I hope i can run webcenter spaces on this...

  • Auto Rollbacks in Data Warehouse

    Hey Guys!
    Has anyone tried using Auto undo in a data warehouse environment?
    I wonder how that plays out for large jobs, which are normally assigned a bigger rollback segment when running in manual mode (loads for instance).
    Thanks,
    Rene

    Albert,
    Correct me if I'm wrong, I guess you meant OLTP system, which in my view is recommended for AUTO UNDO, especially when you want to take advantage of the new Flashback query mechanism.
    I'm rather concerned for a Data Warehouse environment where a bigger rollback segment is normally assigned to a session prior to kicking off the load. Should the UNDO RETENTION parameter be increased prior to a load in that case? Any hint will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • MPLS/VPN network load balancing in the core

    Hi,
    I've an issue about cef based load-balancing in the MPLS core in MPLS/VPN environment. If you consider flow-based load balancing, the path (out interface) will be chosen based on source-destination IP address. What about in MPLS/VPN environment? The hash will be based on PE router src-dst loopback addresses, or vrf packet src-dst in P and PE router? The topology would be:
    CE---PE===P===PE---CE
    I'm interested in load balancing efficiency if I duplicate the link between P and PE routers.
    Thank you for your help!
    Gabor

    Hi,
    On the PE router you could set different types and 2 levels of load-balancing.
    For instance, in case of a DUAL-homed site, subnet A prefix for VPN A could be advertised in the VPN by PE1 or PE2.
    PE1 receives this prefix via eBGP session from CE1 and keep this route as best due to external state.
    PE2 receives this prefix via eBGP session from CE2 and keep this route as best due to external state.
                                 eBGP
                         PE1 ---------CE1
    PE3----------P1                          Subnet A
                         PE2----------CE2 /
                                eBGP
    Therefore from PE3 point of view, 2 routes are available assuming that IGP metric for PE3/PE1 is equal to PE3/PE2.
    The a 1rst level of load-sharing can be achieve thanks to the maximum-paths ibgp number command.
    2 MP-BGP routes are received on PE3:
    PE3->PE1->CE1->subnet A
    PE3->PE2->CE2->subnet A
    To use both routes you must set the number at 2 at least : maximum-paths ibgp 2
    But gess what, in the real world an MPLS backbone hardly garantee an equal IGP cost between 2 Egress PE for a given prefix.
    So it is often necessary to ignore the IGP metric by adding the "unequal-cost" keyword: maximum-paths unequal-cost ibgp 2
    By default the load-balancing is called "per-session": source and destination addresses are considered to choose the path and the outgoing interface avoiding reordering the packets on the target site. Overwise it is possible to use "per-packet" load-balancing.
    Then a 2nd load-sharing level can occur.
    For instance:
             __P1__PE1__CE1
    PE3           \/                   Subnet A
            \ __P2__PE2__CE2
    There is still 2 MP-BGP paths :
    PE3->P1->PE1->CE1->subnet A
    PE3->P1->PE2->CE2->subnet A
    But this time for 2 MP-BGP paths 4 IGP path are available:
    PE3->P1->PE1->CE1->subnet A
    PE3->P1->PE2->CE2->subnet A
    PE3->P2->PE1->CE1->subnet A
    PE3->P2->PE2->CE2->subnet A
    For a load-balancing to be active between those 4 paths, they must exist in the routing table thanks to the "maximum-path 4 "command in the IGP (ex OSPF) process.
    Therefore if those 4 paths are equal-cost IGP paths then a 2nd level load-balancing is achieved. the default behabior is the same source destination mechanism to selected the "per-session" path as mentionned before.
    On an LSP each LSR could use this feature.

  • Guest account and auto log out

    I will be using Snow Leopard machines in a computer lab with guest accounts. However, I've read that when the idle timer ticks over, the dialog box confirming the Guest account's files will be deleted comes up and does not time out (like a normal account would).
    So the machines never auto log out. In an environment where most users don't log off to protect their privacy, this is an annoying problem.
    Is this still an issue? Is there a way to turn off that dialog box confirming logout? Or some other way to get my Guests to auto log off?
    Thanks.

    it would actually be pretty easy to create a automator script that runs a bash script like "sudo exit" which would then prompt for the password of a admin.

  • What size monitor is recommended?

    My consulting Client creates a new edition of a regional newspaper every two weeks. Color is used for the 16" x 11.75" Front Page
    He organizes or creates: articles, photos, ads, classified ads, the usual. He has a PC shop, and accepts stories and photos from one or more reporters.
    He is planning to migrate gradually from Ventura Publisher (with Corel Draw & Photo) to the CS5 suite of products (InDesign, Photoshop, whatever else is useful) as he learns more. For this aspect I'm considering recommending a dual boot environment, as he currently runs XP in 32-bit mode. I prefer Windows 7 in 64-bit mode.
    He sends the color separated final version with regisration marks to his print vendor as a PDF.
    When open, the physical paper measures 23 wide x 16 tall.
    I feel like a 30" display will give him the space he needs for his publication, photos, ads, text, tool palettes, and the other applications windows needed such as Word. He doesn't want to waste his restricted money, and feels that his workflow now fits in 21" or so.
    If anyone out there is under regular deadline pressure and can make a recommendation (vendor, model, size), we would greatly appreciate some advice here. A memory recommendation would also be gratefully accepted. I'm thinking 8-12GB, though we have 3GB now.
    Thanks and Aloha!

    Thank you very much, Eric for your knowledgeable reply.
    Now I have another question, this time about the 1920 x 1222 screen size. Will this wide screen form distort typefaces in my docs created on a 1280 x 1024 monitor?
    Any comments on the Nvidia 460 or 480 card with the monitor you recommend?

    Subject: What size monitor is recommended?
    For a limited budget, you get a fairly versatile and decent quality monitor with the Dell UltraSharp U2410. At 1920x1200 pixels, there is ample room for document windows and palettes, plus it has an IPS panel which is highly desirable for serious photo editing and other colour-critical  work (such as soft-proofing – it's quite accurate once the monitor is properly calibrated and profiled with a hardware tool such as the X-Rite Eye-One Monitor 2 ).
    To take into account when considering a 30" TFT is the need for a graphic card equipped with a dual-link DVI port (single-link DVI does not provide enough bandwidth for 2560x1600 px resolution at 60 Hz) which can add to the already considerable total cost. Personally, I would prefer a better but smaller monitor over a bigger but mediocre one. Do stay clear of anything equipped with a TN type panel by all means; these are the cheapest and boast very fast response times (something totally irrelevant for print design) but a are IMHO a real nuisance to look at over longer periods of time (or at all if you are accustomed to an IPS-TFT).

  • MPLS IP-VPN compatibility

    Hi, we've lots of members running on 2 Cisco 2611 with HA configured (HSRP, ISDN backup, etc). There is 2 scenarios here as follow:
    i. 2 units of 2611 routers with each 2611 have a dedicated LL, one connected to HQ, the other connected to DR.
    ii. 2 units of 2611 routers with only one have a dedicated LL, the other provide ISDN DDR when the LL on the other failed.
    iii. 1 unit of 2611 routers with trunking to a 2950 switch, have a dedicated LL and ISDN DDR.
    For the first scenario, when the members having 2 dedicated LL, normally it is from different telco providers. Now there's one single telco offering us the chance to upgrade to MPLS IP-VPN for an interesting rate. What I'm wondering is, can it work that way?
    I have my 6509s with Sup720 at both HQ and DR, I have a good vendor all the while, if part of the members start to accept the MPLS-VPN, is there any integration problem? The HA configured will still work?
    The thing that worried me most is the core layer part, since the member get the router through a router distribution from the core router in EIGRP, and the ISDN DDR will redistribute the static when the ISDN is active. How MPLS fit into my network?

    Hello,
    In principle everything can work. The dessign in question has one leased line (or ISDN) to the HQ and another path through a MPLS VPN. The issue you will have to deal with is to carefully design your dynamic routing. In case you have EIGRP, then an internal route will always be prefered over an external route. It is most likely to get external routes through the MPLS VPN - depending on implementation details.
    Thus you might have the problem of proper primary/backup path selection and also with routing loops. The underlying reason for both is the redistribution in MP-BGP at the MPLS PE router.
    You need to get more details on the implementation in the SP network to avoid any pitfalls. EIGRP supports backdoors in an MPLS VPN environment, but the question is, whether your telco does as well.
    So it might work, but careful routing design is a must and involves you and the telco. HA is still possible, ISDN backup is possible as well. Depending on your specific implementation details you might need some route tagging and redistribution filters implemented by yourself or the telco to avoid the aforementioned problems.
    Hope this helps! Please rate all posts.

  • Guest account will not auto logout

    I'm using a number of Snow Leopard machines in a public computing setting using the Guest account quite successfully. However, when the idle timer ticks over, the dialog box confirming the Guest account's files will be deleted comes up and does not time out (like a normal account would). So the machines never auto log out. In an environment where most users don't log off to protect their privacy, this is an annoying problem.
    Is there a way to turn off that dialog box confirming logout? Or some other way to get my Guests to auto log off?
    Thanks.

    I've found the guest account is great in a lab/classroom setting, but I need to be able to have the computers run a scheduled shutdown at night so they can reset for the next day. It was a real disappointment to see that the energy saver schedule wouldn't work because of the prompt about files being deleted. Has anyone come up with a way to bypass the prompt or force the logout/restart/shutdown option? I'm surprised I haven't been able to find more results from my search on this topic.

  • Dear Thunderbird devs.... Why is my IMAP subfolders not syncronizing?

    I did not even think of it for several hours.... then I tried Outlook 2013 - it syncronizes lika a charm.
    In T-bird (updated just todays date) you do not even see the sub-folders arrow indicator when entering the Subscription menu.
    Dear all of you that put up all this bad code - you all have caused me several hours of pain. I slowly realize why people talk about support, organization, somebody to ask ant things that do not appear within the forums of freeware/shareware.
    Get this bad code updated or I will forever recommend MS and paid software. This is an obvious dead end. God damn I am happy to not have this Thunderbird in an critical environment.
    kind regards
    Magnus (previous Thunderbird fan)
    ''Inappropriate language removed. Please refer to our [[Forum rules and guidelines]]''

    I'm not a Thunderbird developer, but I cannot confirm your problem at all. There clearly are sub-folders arrows in any of two common IMAP subscription menus. Also, I've never had a sync problem, using TB for many years with many IMAP accounts.
    BTW, Thunderbird is neither [http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/categories.html#freeware freeware nor shareware] (which arguably should not be recommended), see [https://www.mozilla.org/MPL/ Mozilla license] instead.
    While I had my worst nightmares with Outllook, which I have to use sometimes, software I would never recommend in a critical environment ... it seems unfortunate that you have run into a problem with Thunderbird.
    Still, cool down, no need to be unduly rude, IMHO! In many cases somebody -- mostly volunteers who spend some of their free time here! -- can help.

  • "Program files" directory problem during Microsoft Office Customization Installer in non-English versions of Windows

    We have a document-level customization solution for Word and are experiencing problems during deployment in an environment running on terminal services. The OS (Windows 2012) is English and Word (2013) is non-English (German).
    Installation is done into the "Program Files" folder correctly. But when trying to start a word document linked to the specific template. The "Microsoft Office Customization Installer" pops up with the error.
    "There was an error during installation"
    From: file:///C:/Programme/[CompanyName]/[Productname]/[Productname].vsto

    ---> System.Net.WebException: ...... ---> System.IO.DirectoyNotFoundException......
    The problem seems to be that the installer is looking for C:\PROGRAMME instead of C:\PROGRAM FILES. C:\PROGAMME is the German localized name of PROGRAM FILES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Program_Files).
    The installer installs the solution correctly deployed into c:\program files, but when the later a user tries to start it and the Microsoft Office Customization Installer is called, it tries to access the non-existing "c:\programme" folder. This
    doesn't exist, because Windows is English.
    Is there any thing related to deploying solutions on a platform which has different languages (mixing/matching of OS language and Office language?)
    Thank you for your help

    Hello,
    1. First, I would confirm with you whether you dealt with the localization for your document-level add-in?
    2. Did you use this way to define the Create a class that defines the post-deployment action part of Put the document of a solution
    onto the end user's computer (document-level customizations only) and did you get the path with Environment.SpecialFolder enum?
    To handle this, I would recommend you consider using Environment.SpecialFolder to set that property.
