Is bit defender worth while on my macbook pro?

I am wondering what is the best antivirus software for my MacBook Pro.  Is Bitdefender worthwhile?  It is the only one I can buy on a CD.
Antel5

No. Bitdefender is worthless. OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

While updating my MacBook Pro to the newest software, it froze with a grayish screen with a Apple logo and a frozen pinwheel right below it. What can I do to finish updating or to fix this problem?

We can't help you if you don't even know what you are installing.  Never install anything if you do not know what it is.  Installings through Software Update always have explanations which you should be reading to see if you actually need and/or want them.
That being said, it appears you attempted to upgrade to Mavarick.  Although I am not positive.
Sorry, I am going to back out of this because I nor you know what it was you installed.  Hopefully, someone else will chime in here.
    GOOD LUCK!

  • Can I install Windows 7 (64 bit) on late 2013 edition of MacBook Pro?

Can I install Windows 7 (64 bit) on late 2013 edition of MacBook Pro using Bootcamp? Before today, I would have never even asked this question due to the large number of users who continue to use Windows 7 in the PC world!  However, there seems to be two conflicting links on the Apple site.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3986
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634
From the first link, there is a statement as follows: Mac Pro (Late 2013) only supports Windows 8 (64-bit).
From the second link, the table (under MacBook Pro) clearly states that the Retina, 13 inch, late 2013 edition supports BOTH Windows 8 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit.
So the above information is conflicting; and as a result, I am confused!  Thanks for any responses.

As far as I am aware your computer supports Win 7 and Win 8 - 64-bit.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows 7
or Windows 8.  For Boot Camp 4.0 and above you can only use
Windows 7 or later. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Benchmarks of all of the above except Crossover can be found in Benchmarking Parallels, Fusion, and VirtualBox Against Boot Camp - The Mac Observer. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Does it worth to move from macbook pro to macbook pro retina?

    Hey
    I have macbook pro with
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
and its good but many people are saying macbook pro 2013 with retina display is the best laptop and has many features so do you advice me to move from macbook pro to macbook pro 2013 with retina display?
    thanka

It's a very sweet machine, of course. Although the upgrade path is a bit dicey. Just my opinion, but unless you have very demanding graphics needs (in which case you probably should have a desktop system with a huge monitor), I don't see the point of spending all the money. Probably you would get more value if you take your current machine and max out the RAM and get an SSD.
It's hard to advise anyone in such matters via the internet.

I have a new Retina MacBook Pro and when I opened a PDF, it is displaying bit-mapped or "crunchy" looking. Do I need to change settings in Acrobat (CC) ?... or in my Mac System Preferences somewhere?

I can sort this out by just using a HDMI > DVI cable which works fine. I think there must just be an issue with the BenQ HDMI input supporting 1920x1200. Its annoying because the screen is also connected to a PC workstation by DVI so it would be good to have the HDMI for the Macbook so I can quickly switch the display by pressing a button instead of having to unplug cables...

  • Is it worth buying the 8GB Macbook Pro 13" or the 16GB

I was wondering if it would be worth purchasing the Macbook Pro 13" with 8GB or 16GB, I plan on editing videos on iMovie, and using it for schoolwork and browsing the internet (Such as Youtube, Instagram, Twitter, etc)

The 2009 model and later are worth buying. They also feature Multi-Threading, which gives a performance boost.
The 2008 model uses older FBDIMM memories, and its memory has been severely limited in size and expensive (unless you drop down one notch and use 667MHz, which has become quite affordable).
The 2009 model and later change to processor-on-a-shelf, with either a one-chip  or a two-chip shelf installed. Each offers four memory slots per processor. 4 DIMMs @8GB would give you 32GB four under US$400.
Four-core models would do what you are talking about, and you can upgrade to a 6-core processor if you are handy and can deal with thermal paste.

  • Is it worth Waiting for New MacBook Pro 2012..

I just got a new Macbook Pro , is it worth waiting till next 2012 when the new one comes out ?
Any idea what the new would look like in terms for configuration and design..

    Thanks Shootist007,
I can customise my phone, tablet and mediaplayer as I like (thanks to the guys from XDA), it syncs and streams between my tablet and media player. I can integrate and transfer files, messages, contacts, etc between my phone, wifi media player and tablet without being stuck to an itunes interface.  No funny apple conversion/compression tools required for viewing files across platforms, etc. It comes with most programs i use by default, hence no need to get much special or full version apps from the google market place.  Dont get me wroing, Im not shooting down Apple, I just look forward to the day, they offer such functionality by default.
I dont mind not having usb 3, so thats ok, quite like thunderbolt.  Its the retina display, and HD type that Im more concerned about.  And rumours of them doing away with a dvd drive, I still wud like to have one, even in this day and age of wireless/cloud everything.  Im sure by June, I would defintely have enought saved away for a 15"/17" model.
Yip, my iTunes library is a mess, only because I started it all wrong, having music folders all over the place, hence I need my own laptop to consolidate and start a fresh itunes library on a fresh laptop.  Also since its a work laptop, I often have to delete stuff for space reasons.
Yes, as an IT Auditor I understand the concept of buying tech today, and by tommorrow its old :-)
Thanks for the feedback, I do appreciate it very much, and Im really keen to make the crossover to Apple (as 90% of my friends all have Apple macs or macbooks), then hopefiully I will crossover to the iphone, tablet, etc.

  • Making calls while plugged to MacBook Pro or ACD or USB Hub

When I connect iPhone to MacBook Pro to sync and charge, it's not possible to make or receive calls. Even after unplugging, I can't make/receive calls and I have to either turn it off or soft reset. Is this normal?
I have an iPhone 3G dock. I have tried several ways to connect it: direct to MacBook Pro, to Apple Cinema Display-MBP, to Belkin USB Hub-ACD-MBP. I have even tried without the dock. Same problem every time.
    Any idea?

My problem is solved. It happens that the dock was placed between the Macbook Pro, Time Capsule and a speaker. After multiple tests, I realized that the iPhone mounted on the dock works perfectly well if dock is placed somewhere else away from these items. Right now, the dock is connected to a powered USB hub, then to Apple Cinema Display and then to MacBook Pro.
By the way, it also works well if the iPhone is connected using the usb cable only, without the dock, even if it's placed between these items. I personally think that Time Capsule causes some kind of interference with the dock.
Hope this helps to someone else.

Since I got no answer, I gritted my teeth and forced a restart. The machine booted and let me start over on the decryption process. No apparent errors (so far). I got lucky.

  • Just plugged in Time Capsule and one MacBook Pro works fine on WiFi while the other MacBook Pro and iPad 3 keep disconnecting. Any ideas?

Additionally, the wifi icon at the top of the screen has an exclamation mark on the MacBook Pro that doesn't connect. We've tried restarting the machine, the Time Capsule but nothing has helped.

Just called Apple Support and it turns out we had the settings wrong. We're all set now!

  • Performance While Gaming On Macbook Pro 15" (mid 2012)

Hi I have asked this question a few times now but I think I may be able to better describe it now after analysing cause and effect. Now I don't know exactly what Mac OS X does to optimize perfromance in fullscreen, but I think in my case it is working to my disadvantage.
I first noticed that when you play a game in windowed mode, leave it open, and then click off it, the game will revert to 30fps as it is not in current use. I understand this implimentation is benefitial, however I think it may be working against me in fullscreen mode.
Many games have a fluctating perfromance based on where you are looking. When I am in an envrionment that is particularly demanding the Fps will drop from 60 to 30 with Vsync enabled; this is fully expected. However when I am in an extremely undemanding enviroment the framerate can also drop. Until now I wasn't entirely sure as to what this was, but now I have a theory.
I beleive that the operating system thinks that because the environment is so easy on the graphics, that it mistakenly diverts processing power away from it, causing an unwaranted drop in performance. I tested this theory while playing starcraft 2. I was playing a game that began at 30 fps on medium settings, the fans were not running and the laptop was cool. I then turned on anti aliasing which I knew would cause a greater demand on the graphics. This as I suspected sent the framrate from 30fps to 60fps. This was also when the fans began to kick in, suggesting to me that the GPU/ CPU was now working as expected. This revelation leads me on to the question I now ask.
Is there a way to force the Operating system to put everything it's got in to an application? I am not talking about overlocking here, I just don't want resources diverted away from the game. Please note that I always shut down down all other applications when gaming, so the power is essentially being wasted.
Just in case this will help with a diagnosis, here are my system Specs.
    i7 3rd gen, 2.6ghz
    Nvidia 650m 1gb graphics
    8gb ram
    Mountain Lion 10.8.4
Lastly, i'd rather not have suggestions such as playing in windowed mode or disabling vertical syncs. I've also reset the SMC already. Thanks for any replies in advance!

Check under System Preferences > Energy Saver is something like this and uncheck it.
